04:04 PM Tom_L: use superglue instead of solder
06:29 PM rue_mohr: how would I get it off?
09:04 PM rue_mohr: hmm
09:04 PM rue_mohr: the sticker printer is having challanges with my size-critical project
09:04 PM rue_mohr: I think their just used to getting the colours right
09:05 PM rue_mohr: I still dont know what to use to glue down some cd material to cnc a needle
09:34 PM rue_mohr: Tom_L, whats the name of the cnc channel?
09:35 PM Tom_L: what you lookin for?
09:35 PM rue_mohr: linuxcnc
09:35 PM rue_mohr: :]
09:35 PM Tom_L: i figured out your dilemma
09:35 PM rue_mohr: oh?
09:35 PM Tom_L: i know how to cut it
09:35 PM Tom_L: but
09:35 PM rue_mohr: well?
09:35 PM Tom_L: i'm gonna see if you can figure it out
09:35 PM rue_mohr: ugh
09:35 PM rue_mohr: I cant think of a glue to use
09:35 PM rue_mohr: that I can realease without destroying the part
09:35 PM Tom_L: you don't need glue
09:36 PM rue_mohr: I cant hold it
09:36 PM Tom_L: you can
09:36 PM rue_mohr: that body of the needle is 1/64"
09:36 PM Tom_L: ok
09:36 PM Tom_L: so be careful
09:36 PM rue_mohr: hahah
09:36 PM rue_mohr: I think its over the line on that one
09:37 PM Tom_L: mill up one side holding the cd and get rid of the material on that side
09:37 PM Tom_L: put a clamp perpendicular to the needle on that side (a thin small but wide enough clamp)
09:37 PM rue_mohr: I was pondering it
09:37 PM Tom_L: then mill the other half
09:37 PM Tom_L: leave the base for last to help hold it
09:37 PM Tom_L: do the point first
09:38 PM rue_mohr: hmm
09:38 PM Tom_L: it will work
09:38 PM Tom_L: use a thin alum scrap for a clamp
09:38 PM Tom_L: so it doesn't bottom out on the cutter
09:38 PM Tom_L: cause it will be close to it
09:39 PM rue_mohr: milling the end of the clamp off in the process might be easier
09:39 PM Tom_L: maybe even 2 small clamps coming in from the side perp to the needle
09:39 PM Tom_L: that's up to you
09:39 PM Tom_L: what size cutter?
09:39 PM rue_mohr: I have some #80 pcb drills...
09:39 PM Tom_L: wtf for?
09:39 PM rue_mohr: then it would be a tossup for who breaks first
09:40 PM Tom_L: why do you need something that small?
09:40 PM rue_mohr: other than that, I have 1mm, 1.5mm 2mm...
09:40 PM rue_mohr: they were free
09:40 PM rue_mohr: carbide
09:40 PM Tom_L: as long as they fit any radius you cut that's small enough
09:40 PM rue_mohr: pcb drills
09:40 PM rue_mohr: the radii there are huge
09:40 PM rue_mohr: like 1/16"
09:40 PM Tom_L: just use a regular endmill
09:41 PM Tom_L: only 4 flute
09:41 PM Tom_L: that plastic is brittle
09:41 PM rue_mohr: dont have a 4
09:41 PM rue_mohr: yea
09:41 PM Tom_L: then go slower
09:42 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A8_new/A8%20profile1.jpg
09:42 PM Tom_L: similar
09:42 PM Tom_L: but the clamp will be on the needle
09:42 PM Tom_L: and alot smaller clamp
09:42 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/doc/pointer.dxf
09:42 PM rue_mohr: go on, open that up
09:43 PM Tom_L: no
09:43 PM rue_mohr: pfff
09:43 PM Tom_L: same as yesterday?
09:43 PM Tom_L: i saw it
09:43 PM rue_mohr: its cleaned out of the extra layers
09:43 PM rue_mohr: its just the pointer
09:43 PM Tom_L: i get the idea
09:44 PM Tom_L: that pin and bolt hold that A8 while i profile it
09:44 PM Tom_L: 1/16" pin
09:44 PM Tom_L: that's the best way to mill it
09:45 PM Tom_L: use a 1mm cutter if you have one
09:45 PM Tom_L: less stress on the plastic
09:45 PM Tom_L: if the flutes are long enough
09:45 PM rue_mohr: yea
09:46 PM Tom_L: that small diameter you'll need to spin it quick
09:46 PM rue_mohr: top is 6k
09:46 PM Tom_L: sfm are tricky on small cutters
09:46 PM Tom_L: 4k should be ok
09:46 PM Tom_L: try 2ipm to see what that does
09:47 PM rue_mohr: mm/min?
09:47 PM Tom_L: I pm
09:47 PM Tom_L: convert it however you wish
09:47 PM rue_mohr: 50.8mm/min
09:47 PM Tom_L: you'll be able to tell on the first half if that's close
09:47 PM Tom_L: before you cut the 2nd half and break it
09:48 PM Tom_L: try not to cut the aluminum strap
09:48 PM Tom_L: if you can help it
09:49 PM Tom_L: so plan on a pause once it cuts the first half to move clamps around
09:49 PM Tom_L: M0
09:49 PM rue_mohr: I wonder
09:49 PM Tom_L: M5 M0 then M3 to turn the spindle back on
09:50 PM Tom_L: my cam will insert that code for me now
09:50 PM Tom_L: on a pause
09:51 PM Tom_L: i'd have to check it because i forgot what i called it now
09:51 PM rue_mohr: do you think I can take the whole thickness at once?
09:51 PM Tom_L: it's not that thick
09:51 PM Tom_L: is it the width of the cutter thick?
09:51 PM rue_mohr: I wonder if i'd need cooling
09:51 PM Tom_L: should be ok but you'll want coolant and probably air to clear the plastic
09:52 PM rue_mohr: that plastic seemed better with slow hard cuts
09:52 PM Tom_L: if it melts it'll stick to the cutter and break it
09:53 PM rue_mohr: yep
09:53 PM Tom_L: you'll want a fairly wide clamp to hold as much of the needle as you can
09:54 PM Tom_L: i could make one from brass or aluminum
09:54 PM Tom_L: setup will take longer than making it
09:56 PM Tom_L: you might want to take 2 passes depending how well you can clear the plastic as it cuts
09:58 PM Tom_L: i'll allow you 2 attempts
10:00 PM rue_mohr: Hmmm
10:01 PM Tom_L: i'm not sure what i have in the way of cutters that size now
10:02 PM rue_mohr: I thought you might like this challange
10:02 PM Tom_L: i used some small ones on that coupler for your bud
10:02 PM rue_mohr: it wouldn't be so appealing if it were not impossible
10:02 PM Tom_L: but you're gonna cut it ...
10:02 PM rue_mohr: yes
10:03 PM rue_mohr: but its still fun to try to work out how to do it
10:03 PM Tom_L: pin the cd so you can relocate it if you need to
10:03 PM Tom_L: like for trimming the first half out of the way to make room for the clamp
10:04 PM rue_mohr: I'm going to make the front window as a warmup
10:04 PM rue_mohr: its from the cd case
10:04 PM rue_mohr: it should be easy
10:04 PM Tom_L: i know i don't have any 'high end' cutters that small
10:05 PM rue_mohr: dont break the good stuff on this
10:05 PM Tom_L: i'm not making one
10:05 PM rue_mohr: of course not
10:05 PM Tom_L: but i gave you a successful way to do it
10:07 PM Tom_L: once you cut the first half, use calipers and scribe the boundary for the other half so you know where to put the clam
10:07 PM Tom_L: ;
10:07 PM Tom_L: ;
10:07 PM Tom_L: clamp
10:08 PM Tom_L: fingertips are numb
10:08 PM Tom_L: can't type half the time
10:15 PM Tom_L: gnite
10:19 PM rue_mohr: gnight
10:19 PM rue_mohr: thanks, I will keep ya updated
