04:42 AM Tom_L: hi
07:59 AM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
02:36 PM aandrew: wow, I wrote 1000 lines of new code yesterday, then spent four full hours fighting the goddamned compiler to give me an executable with debug ifno
02:37 PM aandrew: found an amazingly facepalm-y circular logic bug... it's a secure (encrypted) storage library and at startup it validates the storage pools; if after the checks it doesn't find an active pool, it chooses the first one and writes metadata to make it active. the first thing the write function does is call _active_pool() to get the pointer to the active storage pool, which doesn't exist because I'm in the
02:38 PM aandrew: process of making one active so the library can use it. :-)
02:38 PM aandrew: once I figured that out though, it seems to work better now. now I'm building up the higher level functions which will make it actually useful as a storage system
07:20 PM rue_mohr: fun
07:34 PM rue_mohr: so the shop noted a bunch of things about the truck I need to look into
07:43 PM Tom_L: imagine that
07:44 PM rue_mohr: its a pretty honest shop
07:44 PM rue_mohr: they do an online report with pictures
07:44 PM rue_mohr: and its definitly my truck :]
07:45 PM rue_mohr: the spare tire was flat, AGAIN
07:45 PM rue_mohr: dealt with that a few years ago, forgot to do a followup
07:45 PM rue_mohr: the left rear drum was siezed on, heheh
07:46 PM Tom_L: i had that happen on mine once
07:46 PM Tom_L: resealed the bead and went on
07:46 PM rue_mohr: yep
07:46 PM Tom_L: did that myself
07:46 PM rue_mohr: when I decided to check it and noticed it was flat, I didn't know if anyone had ever checked it before
07:46 PM Tom_L: drums tend to do that too
07:46 PM rue_mohr: that was about 8+ years ago
07:47 PM rue_mohr: yea, and my rear shocks are rotting part, I knew that
07:47 PM rue_mohr: broken leaf spring they didn't comment on
07:47 PM rue_mohr: I think I might want to upgrade the springs anyhow
07:47 PM rue_mohr: I was going to for going electirc
07:48 PM rue_mohr: stupid tailpipe keeps rotting out
07:48 PM rue_mohr: they missed the exhaust header leaking
07:48 PM rue_mohr: I'll probably deal with half this stuff
07:49 PM rue_mohr: that'll be its 3rd tailpipe
07:49 PM rue_mohr: maybe if I spray the next one inside with sink primer
07:49 PM rue_mohr: zink
07:50 PM rue_mohr: shouldn't get tooo hot at that end
07:50 PM Tom_L: i put shocks on the front once
07:51 PM Tom_L: those are hard to get to
07:51 PM rue_mohr: ? interesting
07:51 PM rue_mohr: I did the fronts a few years ago
07:51 PM Tom_L: err no, A arm bushings that was...
07:51 PM Tom_L: had to take the spring out
07:51 PM Tom_L: almost didn't get it back in
07:51 PM rue_mohr: Ah, well, they SAY the arms are rusting thru, I dont think so tho
07:52 PM rue_mohr: I will take a scraper to them and find out, cause that is imporant
07:52 PM Tom_L: i got some crap tools from harbor freight for it
07:52 PM Tom_L: one time use stuff
07:52 PM rue_mohr: huh
07:53 PM rue_mohr: threaded rods and wide forked nuts?
07:53 PM Tom_L: check around the spring seats for rust
07:53 PM Tom_L: i don't remember now
07:53 PM rue_mohr: ITS ALL RUSTY
07:53 PM rue_mohr: I know THAT
07:53 PM Tom_L: i didn't have a spring compressor
07:53 PM rue_mohr: ah
07:53 PM Tom_L: did it manually ... fun
07:54 PM rue_mohr: all thread?
07:54 PM rue_mohr: allthread...
07:54 PM Tom_L: jack & chain to hold it in compression
07:54 PM rue_mohr: oh my
07:54 PM Tom_L: i'm not real sure now the steps but i did it
07:56 PM rue_mohr: I'v had a few projects like that
07:56 PM Tom_L: i think those years have passed me
07:57 PM Tom_L: ... maybe
07:57 PM rue_mohr: look back and try to figure out how you built something so good using only rocks, sticks, and used nails
08:02 PM Tom_L: did the mill with hand tools
08:02 PM rue_mohr: https://twitter.com/idlehandsdev/status/1669487539613204480
08:02 PM rue_mohr: I need to, at some point, pull the exhaust header out and redo the mating surface
08:02 PM rue_mohr: its all out and not sealing
08:03 PM rue_mohr: that fellow reconditioned a CNC lathe
08:03 PM Tom_L: who's that ^^
08:03 PM rue_mohr: fellow in oz
08:04 PM rue_mohr: quite the work to redo the cnc lathe, now he's making those, I dont know why
08:04 PM Tom_L: header isn't cracked is it?
08:04 PM rue_mohr: no, but its a little woobly after the 3 repairs I did on it
08:05 PM rue_mohr: I had to extend one of the ports by about 1/4"
08:27 PM Tom_L: i forgot.. is yours a 4 cyl?
08:27 PM rue_mohr: yup
08:28 PM rue_mohr: its getting pretty worn out, I want to find another block and rebuild it for a swap-in
08:28 PM Tom_L: diy?
08:28 PM rue_mohr: ?
08:28 PM Tom_L: rebuild
08:28 PM rue_mohr: maybe
08:28 PM Tom_L: i've done quite a few
08:29 PM rue_mohr: crank bearings, rings, cylinder
08:29 PM rue_mohr: ah, I'll drop in and we can do up mine!
08:29 PM rue_mohr: :]
08:29 PM Tom_L: i know a good machinist
08:29 PM Tom_L: he did my inlaw's head
08:29 PM Tom_L: valve job etc
08:29 PM rue_mohr: oh heavy stuff
08:30 PM Tom_L: that was the last one i did
08:30 PM rue_mohr: was that head that far out?
08:30 PM Tom_L: god only knows how many VW i rebuilt
08:30 PM Tom_L: i don't think so
08:30 PM rue_mohr: the blow-by is getting pretty bad
08:30 PM Tom_L: done a compression test?
08:31 PM rue_mohr: there is a bit of a breeze when you take the fill cap off for the valve cover
08:31 PM Tom_L: does it burn oil?
08:31 PM rue_mohr: yea, the compression is ~
08:31 PM rue_mohr: no blue smoke
08:31 PM Tom_L: smoke on start is valve guides
08:31 PM Tom_L: smoke all the time is rings
08:31 PM rue_mohr: it goes thru oil, but most of it is leaking out under the valve cover gasket
08:31 PM Tom_L: white smoke is head gasket with water leak
08:31 PM rue_mohr: ok
08:31 PM rue_mohr: yup
08:32 PM rue_mohr: blow by has to be rings tho, right?
08:32 PM Tom_L: probably
08:32 PM Tom_L: if you can tell thru the valve cover
08:33 PM Tom_L: you'll get some displacement anyway
08:33 PM rue_mohr: its choughing up into the air filter pretty badly too
08:35 PM Tom_L: alot of the good machinists i knew aren't around now
08:35 PM rue_mohr: mmm
08:36 PM Tom_L: as far as that type of machine work
08:36 PM rue_mohr: there was a engine rebuilder guy here once upon a time
08:36 PM rue_mohr: has a big specialized mill for blocks
08:36 PM Tom_L: there's a company that does it here but it's not like it was
08:36 PM rue_mohr: had?
08:37 PM Tom_L: huh?
08:37 PM rue_mohr: I dont know if he is still around
08:37 PM Tom_L: oh
08:37 PM Tom_L: yeah these guys did it all too
08:38 PM Tom_L: not very often you gotta mess with the block
08:38 PM rue_mohr: get a shiny new engine back?
08:38 PM Tom_L: just bore
08:38 PM Tom_L: i dunno, never used them
08:38 PM rue_mohr: yea, I expect it just needs new bore help
08:38 PM rue_mohr: maybe valves
08:38 PM Tom_L: depending how far, you may need pistons too
08:38 PM Tom_L: definitely a valve job
08:39 PM Tom_L: i've done that too
08:39 PM rue_mohr: ah, thats not an engine with cylinder liners?
08:39 PM Tom_L: done a few tri angle grinds
08:39 PM Tom_L: i doubt it
08:39 PM Tom_L: i dunno
08:39 PM rue_mohr: hmm
08:39 PM rue_mohr: iron block
08:39 PM Tom_L: never botherd to look
08:39 PM Tom_L: i got the book ya know
08:39 PM rue_mohr: hmm
08:39 PM rue_mohr: I have the.... different book
08:40 PM rue_mohr: your book is better
08:40 PM Tom_L: heim?
08:40 PM Tom_L: i think
08:40 PM Tom_L: factory
08:40 PM rue_mohr: haynes
08:40 PM Tom_L: yeah that's it
08:41 PM rue_mohr: 1990 S10/S15
08:41 PM Tom_L: https://haynes.com/en-us/
08:41 PM rue_mohr: its missing lots
08:41 PM rue_mohr: I was looking thru it for steering pump stuff
08:41 PM Tom_L: https://haynes.com/en-us/search?query=1990%20Chevrolet%20S10
08:42 PM Tom_L: chilton was aftermarket
08:43 PM rue_mohr: huh
08:44 PM rue_mohr: my todo list...
08:44 PM rue_mohr: maybe I can deal with the battery pack
08:44 PM Tom_L: haven't done any of that stuff in quite a while
08:44 PM rue_mohr: comming home kinda useless
10:24 PM rue_mohr: ok, I made the battery pack for art
10:24 PM Tom_L: like a week in the making
10:34 PM rue_mohr: longer
10:34 PM rue_mohr: its been like 6-8 months
10:34 PM rue_mohr: - take the low-drag pneumatic check valve and hook two up to a speaker to make an air pump
10:34 PM rue_mohr: - change the gasket on the truck doors
10:34 PM rue_mohr: - 1 bit computer , assemble programming interface
10:34 PM rue_mohr: - assemble irrigation water movment pumps and summer cooling system
10:34 PM rue_mohr: - build shed solar charge controller
10:34 PM rue_mohr: - test the new cnc motor driver at 120V
10:34 PM rue_mohr: - put away gear counter project
10:34 PM rue_mohr: - clean deck
10:34 PM rue_mohr: - strip down printers
10:35 PM rue_mohr: - plant the raspberry bush
10:35 PM rue_mohr: - become a robot and hide in a hole while all the humans kill each other
10:35 PM rue_mohr: he just called too
10:35 PM rue_mohr: now he also needs solder and some help to tighten the brakes on a walker
