12:31 PM aandrew: hey check my math, this doesnt smell right but I'm pretty sure it is. Dropping 100V across 100 ohms is only 1A, but 100W, yes? I=V/R and P=V^2/R
12:42 PM aandrew: kind of blowing my mind that it's gonna dissipat that much
04:13 PM aandrew: Rue_mohr: https://twitter.com/brunolevy01/status/1643305642147340316?s=46&t=5LPGvbdUzMRL0qV1ATLLSA might be interesting. It includes a 1-bit computer a few tweets I
04:13 PM aandrew: in
04:32 PM polprog: i just swapped a ni-cd battery pack in an uniden HH979 marine vhf radio
04:32 PM polprog: saved myself some time because i found a pre-welded batt back like the original one
04:32 PM polprog: (6S AA)
04:32 PM polprog: so i just had to do 4 screws, solder two wires and done
04:33 PM polprog: ill test it on the specan tomorrow to see the power output maybe
04:33 PM polprog: and it will be ready for sailing
04:37 PM polprog: gn
05:49 PM aandrew: I have to see how these cheap bengfu or whatever HTs look like, bought a dummy load and SWR meter
05:55 PM aandrew: wonder how shit a $50 1T NvME SSD is... https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005078914031.html
07:00 PM rue_mohr: zippo:/home/dan/Downloads# ohm -v 100 -r 100
07:00 PM rue_mohr: Power is: 100.000W
07:00 PM rue_mohr: Current is: 1.000A
07:00 PM rue_mohr: Voltage is: 100.000V
07:00 PM rue_mohr: Resistance is: 100.000Ohms
07:24 PM aandrew: thanks for the cross check :-)
07:26 PM aandrew: heh my old boss called me to ask if I knew how three phase power metering systems could tell whether the load was consuming or producing electricity. I knew there was a simple answer but couldn't think of it
07:27 PM aandrew: it turns out it's stupid simple: measure the instantaneous voltage and current for each phase, then multiply them together. If the result is positive, the load is consuming current. If it's negative, it's producing it.
07:27 PM aandrew: makes perfect sense but I couldn't think of it. WHen consuming power, voltage and current are in phase (with some phase shift correlating to power factor). When producing power, the current is out of phase with the voltage.
07:32 PM rue_mohr: drat I'm out of NRG again
07:33 PM rue_mohr: I want to hook a bunch of 74595 to a memory chip and program it thru a serial port
07:33 PM rue_mohr: the serial memory programmer will take as many chips as the 1 bit computer
08:47 PM Tom_L: make a magnetic core memory for something to do
08:52 PM Tom_L: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/da/KL_CoreMemory.jpg
08:52 PM Tom_L: lotsa ferrite
08:53 PM rue_mohr: i did
08:54 PM Tom_L: might help to be a seamstress
08:56 PM rue_mohr: not that many bits tho
08:56 PM rue_mohr: didn't get to making a driver for it
08:56 PM Tom_L: no that would take alot of beads
08:56 PM rue_mohr: I got some official ones
08:59 PM Tom_L: i've seen equipment wiht core memory years back
08:59 PM rue_mohr: cool, running?
08:59 PM Tom_L: i think so
09:00 PM Tom_L: old church organ
09:00 PM rue_mohr: cool
09:17 PM Tom_L: A former IBM employee tells me that when IBM first decided to manufacture core memory, they consulted with the Lifesaver company on fabrication methods.
09:17 PM Tom_L: :)
09:19 PM rue_mohr: heh, cool
09:24 PM Tom_L: The woven address-location wires are down around #42 gauge (0.002-0.003 inch).
09:28 PM Tom_L: Hubble Space Telescope used plated wire memory along with other space projects
09:28 PM rue_mohr: oof, I only go to 40
09:28 PM Tom_L: more reliable than chip memory?
09:28 PM rue_mohr: might take radiation better?
09:29 PM Tom_L: the Viking program that sent landers to Mars
09:29 PM Tom_L: the Voyager space probes
09:29 PM Tom_L: maybe
09:29 PM rue_mohr: look at storage now, it stores our data by probability
09:29 PM rue_mohr: :S
09:30 PM Tom_L: http://www.righto.com/2019/01/inside-apollo-guidance-computers-core.html
09:30 PM rue_mohr: one of the fellows on twtter is a person reverse engineering it all
09:31 PM aandrew: I've been watching him take apart the 8086 subsystem by subsystem at the gate level. fascinating
09:31 PM rue_mohr: yea, I'm not too into that, but have been noticing it
09:32 PM rue_mohr: I'm close to adding serial programming to my 1 bit computer
09:32 PM rue_mohr: which I think is insane
09:32 PM rue_mohr: +4 ttl chips
09:34 PM rue_mohr: I'm supposed to be making servos
09:34 PM rue_mohr: I'm failing my goals
09:35 PM rue_mohr: I mean, I find the distractions fascinating
09:35 PM rue_mohr: this directly-hook-a-74595-to-a-serial-port has be totally stoked
09:35 PM rue_mohr: like the scanless keyboards
09:36 PM rue_mohr: I'm entranced by the fact its totally right there to do and I'v never seen or heard of it done before
09:37 PM rue_mohr: I find the idea of a 1 bit, serially re-flashable computer thats made of 8 ttl chips a gas.
09:37 PM Tom_L: where will cell phones be in 5 years?
09:37 PM rue_mohr: landfill
09:38 PM Tom_L: replaced by?
09:38 PM rue_mohr: other cell phones
09:38 PM rue_mohr: humanity does makes these great strides in building things and then decides to tear it all down and go in circles for a millenia
09:39 PM rue_mohr: its aweful
09:39 PM rue_mohr: "throw away the things on today and buy the new tommorow"
09:40 PM rue_mohr: till tomorow comes
09:40 PM Tom_L: didn't used to be like that
09:40 PM rue_mohr: ford was the first obvious case, with the model T
09:40 PM rue_mohr: mass manufacturing
09:41 PM rue_mohr: damn
09:42 PM rue_mohr: I have like 20 minutes left
09:42 PM Tom_L: for?
09:42 PM rue_mohr: but I worked out a great thing for the 1 bit
09:42 PM rue_mohr: to stay awake
09:42 PM Tom_L: i'm all out of time
09:42 PM rue_mohr: I ahve to go to bed early
09:42 PM Tom_L: i am going now.. i'm ill anyway
09:42 PM rue_mohr: I get a super long weekend
09:42 PM rue_mohr: 4 days
09:42 PM rue_mohr: ill?
09:42 PM Tom_L: cold or something
09:43 PM rue_mohr: polen? cold? asphixiation?
09:43 PM Tom_L: i'm sure polen plays a part
09:43 PM rue_mohr: I'm worred about sean
09:43 PM Tom_L: not been back?
09:43 PM rue_mohr: I heard he came into emergency at the hospital and got flown over to vancouver
09:44 PM rue_mohr: they do that if its super serious
09:44 PM rue_mohr: called and have not heard back
09:44 PM rue_mohr: wait, the 1 bit could just use a ram chip then
09:47 PM rue_mohr: so I need to know if I can load a ram chip with the 595 circuit
