01:16 AM WormFood: This is interesting. I just bought a card online, from China, of course. It just arrived today, and I'm looking at it in detail just now, an I noticed that one of the ICs had the corner torn up. It sorta made me think a rodent had been chewing on it, but that does not appear to be the case.
01:26 AM WormFood: It's a PAL16V8, and I'm looking for the date code on it, and it's been knocked off (not intentional), but I do notice that it's stamped COMPAQ91
01:26 AM WormFood: The back of the card has a QC sticker, that says 2023, so I don't think it's an old stock card. It was probably made this year. But I find them recycling chips like that interesting.
01:26 AM WormFood: As long as it works, I like it. Saves resources. Reuse a part, that would otherwise be useless, so yeah, I'm cool with a part from a '91 compaq in it...as long as it is reliable.
01:56 AM WormFood: aandrew, this https://www.ebay.com/itm/265116393504 may be what your son "needs". 60 watts, 2m, less than $130, new.
03:21 AM polprog: morning
03:21 AM polprog: what card is that WormFood ?
03:21 AM polprog: the chinese recycle ICs a lot
03:22 AM polprog: Pretty much all eeproms and PALs you get are recycled
03:24 AM WormFood: It's a POST card
03:28 AM polprog: ah that
07:15 AM rue_mohr: 16v8 fast enough for pci?
08:28 AM rue_mohr: I had a dream where a manufacturer had put a venier on two sides of a sheet of plywood to make it resistant to delamination.
09:38 AM polprog: I think they use it for ISA signals and maybe PCI clock
09:38 AM polprog: the whole PCI part is implemented in an fpga
09:38 AM polprog: I have one post card where its just a lattice FPGA and the 7 seg displays
11:35 AM aandrew: WormFood: nice, that's not a bad little 2m rig, lots of powah too.
11:36 AM WormFood: It's crazy how cheap things are now, compared to 20-30 years ago.
11:37 AM aandrew: Shoppers Drug Mart: Rx(s) starting with METH are ready for pickup at 310 Fairway Road S. We'll hold them until Sat, Apr 8.
11:37 AM aandrew: ^^ that always makes me laugh
11:37 AM WormFood: I took a quick glance at antennas, and they're quite a bit more expensive than I expected. It looks like a single band high gain antenna is about $60
11:38 AM WormFood: I estimate, for about $200, or a little over, you can get a 60W radio, and a mag mount antenna.
02:36 PM aandrew: hah now this is interesting
02:37 PM aandrew: RAT yesterday afternoon: faint positive. RAT last night: same. RAT this morning: same. PCR this afternoon: negative.
02:37 PM aandrew: I always thought RATs tended to fail negative and PCR the opposite
10:08 PM rue_mohr: hmmm, an antenna, with a motorized trim on the end that is a 40 pole, 3 phase motor that uses the SWR to extend or retract the trim till the antenna is tuned to the frequency being used
10:09 PM rue_mohr: powered by the transmitt signal
10:17 PM rue_mohr: I fixed the brushes on the motor of the electric tiller and then blew the speed controller, but finished the tilling.
