07:15 PM aandrew: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002531479872.html 10 days
07:15 PM aandrew: using that for cutting PCB material. diamond blades FTW
07:20 PM rue_mohr: oh I wonder if got anyting
07:21 PM rue_mohr: I was up past 8am
07:21 PM rue_mohr: I was trying to get to sleep when the alarm clock went off
07:22 PM aandrew: yeah you're like in complete antiphase with a normal sleep pattern
07:31 PM rue_mohr: that sensor build was interesting
07:31 PM rue_mohr: wish it had gone a bit faster
07:33 PM rue_mohr: well, I need to have breakfast, lunch AND supper now
08:43 PM rue_mohr: https://twitter.com/RueNahcMohr/status/1595608224258215936
08:43 PM rue_mohr: the results of last night
08:44 PM rue_mohr: https://twitter.com/RueNahcMohr/status/1595605437025767424
08:44 PM rue_mohr: at 20kHz, it works pretty good, given its made of 3d printed plastic and all
08:46 PM Tom_L: best way to clone a drive in linux?
08:46 PM rue_mohr: same size or different size/
08:46 PM rue_mohr: ?
08:46 PM Tom_L: same
08:47 PM rue_mohr: cat /dev/sd! > /dev/sd@
08:47 PM rue_mohr: wehre ! and @ are the letters for the drives
08:47 PM rue_mohr: it will 1:1 push the bits over
08:48 PM Tom_L: i may already have one...
08:48 PM rue_mohr: so, funny plastic sensor, what you think?
08:49 PM Tom_L: putting a vm on but i didn't want to disturb what i have
08:49 PM rue_mohr: you can do the cat while its running
08:49 PM rue_mohr: it'll start up like a bad shutdown
08:50 PM Tom_L: appears to work
08:54 PM Tom_L: ok i had a spare ssd with what i need..
08:54 PM rue_mohr: there is a lot of design work in all those silly bits
08:54 PM rue_mohr: and then a jig to coil the fields
08:55 PM Tom_L: haven't even set hexchat up on it yet
08:56 PM Tom_L: something is fishy though
08:59 PM rue_mohr: ?
09:02 PM Tom_L: seems ok now
09:03 PM aandrew: Tom_L: depends on what you're after, but dd if=/dev/sdFOO of=/dev/sdBAR bs=512 conv=noerror will do the best job without shitting the bed if there are errors on the source, and bs=something like 10485760 will generally be faster
09:03 PM Tom_L: i got what i needed.. thanks
09:03 PM Tom_L: what does conv=noerror do?
09:04 PM Tom_L: bs=1M or so
09:09 PM aandrew: conv=noerror basically lets the copy continue if there's a read or write rror
09:10 PM aandrew: noerror Do not stop processing on an input error. When an input error occurs, a diagnostic message followed by the current input and output block counts will be written to the standard error out- put in the same format as the standard completion message. If the sync conversion is also specified, any missing input data will be replaced with NUL bytes (or with spaces if a block ori-
09:10 PM aandrew: ented conversion value was specified) and processed as a normal input buffer. If the sync conversion is not specified, the input block is omitted from the output. On input files which are not tapes or pipes, the file offset will be positioned past the block in which the error occurred using lseek(2).
09:11 PM aandrew: oh yeah you want sync, noerror
09:11 PM aandrew: but use bs=512 for that so a bad sector won't skip dozens :-)
09:46 PM rue_mohr: if its not a dieing drive, cat is great
09:47 PM rue_mohr: so polprog
09:47 PM rue_mohr: it might be time for gen3
09:47 PM rue_mohr: right now, gen2, I have a bash script
09:47 PM aandrew: cool, the neopixel ring works
09:47 PM aandrew: just gotta re-center it
09:48 PM rue_mohr: I put all the images and maybe a text file that I want scaled and uploaded to the web server in a directory and run it, it scales and uploads the files, then (re)builds a file for the slideshow player
09:49 PM rue_mohr: aandrew, arg, I need to fight with the pi again
09:49 PM rue_mohr: it wasn't supposed to be an issue like this
09:49 PM rue_mohr: but, the web server, gen3 would be to have a program that takes the media and some text, and appends it to an article on the web server
09:50 PM rue_mohr: I suppose it could stitch in markdown
09:50 PM rue_mohr: ok, where is my bag of SD cards
09:54 PM rue_mohr: 2017-11-29-raspbian-stretch-lite.img
09:54 PM rue_mohr: oh
09:54 PM rue_mohr: I have that file
09:54 PM rue_mohr: ok
09:54 PM rue_mohr: wont use it, but ok
09:59 PM rue_mohr: Tom_L, which distro did you say to avoid?
10:00 PM rue_mohr: buster ok
10:01 PM rue_mohr: https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/operating-systems/
10:01 PM rue_mohr: ah
10:01 PM rue_mohr: lite
10:04 PM rue_mohr: whats an xz
10:04 PM rue_mohr: oh there is an "unxz" so it doesn't matter
10:06 PM rue_mohr: maybe doing that over to 100mb network was a bad idea
10:07 PM rue_mohr: so, atleast 2G
10:07 PM rue_mohr: kingston 8G
10:09 PM rue_mohr: sandisk 16G
10:11 PM rue_mohr: I'll go with this 8G
10:11 PM Tom_L: buster
10:12 PM Tom_L: i'd go with bookworm personally
10:12 PM Tom_L: it gets updated since it's not a release yet but it works good
10:12 PM rue_mohr: oh I'm not into dayly updates...
10:12 PM rue_mohr: I like to go back to a stable version\
10:13 PM rue_mohr: I been burned a lot of times by the nightly stuff
10:13 PM rue_mohr: "oh yea, that version of gclib corrupts drive data"
10:14 PM Tom_L: lemme post the bookworm img for you
10:16 PM rue_mohr: is there any special reason to use an unstable version?
10:17 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Rpi4/
10:17 PM Tom_L: ok well take your pick then
10:17 PM Tom_L: there's bullseye too
10:17 PM Tom_L: alot bigger
10:18 PM rue_mohr: I found that lite version, no gui
10:18 PM Tom_L: still dling
10:18 PM Tom_L: from the daily builds?
10:19 PM rue_mohr: no
10:19 PM rue_mohr: too new
10:19 PM rue_mohr: all sorts of bugs from stuff not being out long enough
10:19 PM rue_mohr: https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/operating-systems/
10:19 PM rue_mohr: sept 22 is still pretty new
10:20 PM Tom_L: the bookworm is 08/08
10:20 PM rue_mohr: oh
10:20 PM Tom_L: still loading on the server though
10:20 PM rue_mohr: wait 2008?
10:20 PM Tom_L: 2022/08/08
10:21 PM Tom_L: i've been using it for a while now
10:22 PM Tom_L: bookworm is done downloading now if you want it
10:22 PM Tom_L: the other one is still working
10:24 PM Tom_L: if you have disk image writer installed just double click on the .xz file
10:25 PM Tom_L: looks like they're both up there now
10:27 PM rue_mohr: had any issues with your version then?
10:28 PM Tom_L: not yet
10:28 PM Tom_L: just buster
10:28 PM rue_mohr: ok
10:28 PM Tom_L: but i don't update it so usb stays working
10:28 PM rue_mohr: hmm
10:36 PM rue_mohr: Tom_L, you ok with me downloadeing 420M?
10:36 PM Tom_L: i don't care
10:52 PM rue_mohr: oh its going to take a while to get this thing going
10:53 PM rue_mohr: I must have had it set up with the shared key for the webserver
10:53 PM rue_mohr: I'm not sure how to do all that off the top of my head
11:14 PM rue_mohr: ok , it can take a picture
11:14 PM rue_mohr: thats what I need for now
11:14 PM rue_mohr: I wonder if it'll still work if I take it to the shop
11:23 PM rue_shop3: 9.242
11:24 PM Tom_L: you get the file?
11:27 PM rue_mohr: yes, its finished
11:27 PM rue_mohr: thanks
11:27 PM Tom_L: burn it?
11:27 PM rue_mohr: playing with the 2022 first, I'm going to set up both
11:28 PM rue_mohr: make backups this time too
11:29 PM Tom_L: :)
11:33 PM rue_shop1: oh I cant make a step file
11:34 PM rue_shop1: someone was asking that if I posted the parts for that sensor, if I'd post them in step
11:34 PM rue_shop1: and I cant
11:34 PM rue_shop1: stl, off, amf, 3mf, csg
