#garfield Calendar

10:14 AM polprog: aandrew: lol, no these are less flammable
10:23 AM polprog: i've sanded the surface down a bit and carefully soldered wires, charging the pack now
10:23 AM polprog: it's a 2S pack with a BMS, stuffed into what was a 6S nicad pack, fits tight
12:18 PM aandrew: I figure anyone in here would be both crazy enough and skilled enough to do it (the combination is important) :-)
01:38 PM polprog: what do you mean aandrew :D
09:48 PM rue_mohr: I got the chains and cables installed to synch and drive the X axis of the large cnc
09:51 PM Tom_L: :)
09:52 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1250440.jpg
09:52 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1250441.jpg
09:52 PM rue_mohr: I'm sad its taken years to get this far
09:52 PM rue_mohr: lots of cast parts...
09:53 PM Tom_L: kat would have plenty to say about it
09:53 PM rue_mohr: :]
09:54 PM rue_mohr: my idea is to drive it with the permanent magnet motor I got from a lawn mower (about 2hp) thru a ~7.5:1 belt reduction
09:54 PM rue_mohr: the position feedback will be direct off the gantry, not thru the drive
09:56 PM rue_mohr: the pulley I have needs to be borred out a lot
09:56 PM rue_mohr: but my lathe isn't big enough
09:57 PM Tom_L: mill
09:57 PM rue_mohr: yea, dont have that option
09:57 PM Tom_L: let's see it
09:57 PM rue_mohr: see which?
09:57 PM rue_mohr: the l=pulley
09:57 PM Tom_L: how boreing is it?
09:58 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1250433.jpg
09:58 PM rue_mohr: I need the hub opened up to 33.7mm
09:58 PM rue_mohr: I'v contacted a fellow with a larger lathe
09:58 PM Tom_L: what is it now?
09:58 PM rue_mohr: oh, 7/8 maybe
09:58 PM Tom_L: will there be enough meat left?
09:59 PM Tom_L: bottom of the grooves
09:59 PM rue_mohr: yes
09:59 PM rue_mohr: no, I dont need the smaller pulley
09:59 PM Tom_L: no but it needs to stay together
09:59 PM rue_mohr: there is enough
09:59 PM rue_mohr: the grub screw will still even have threads
10:00 PM rue_mohr: they were smart, it goes in at an angle
10:00 PM Tom_L: what's that off of?
10:00 PM rue_mohr: hehe
10:00 PM rue_mohr: ... an elevator...
10:00 PM Tom_L: something with a decent reduction
10:00 PM rue_mohr: yep
10:00 PM rue_mohr: the door
10:02 PM rue_mohr: I wonder if 7.5:1 is enough
10:04 PM rue_mohr: calculator says that my 0.1mm resolution will be about 1 degree on the drive shaft
10:04 PM rue_mohr: so about 7.5 degrees on the motor
10:05 PM rue_mohr: I think I can control the motor within 7 or 8 degrees
10:06 PM Tom_L: how many mm does that translate to?
10:07 PM rue_mohr: oh no wait
10:07 PM rue_mohr: I goofed my units
10:07 PM rue_mohr: that was 0.1cm
10:07 PM rue_mohr: oh dear
10:07 PM rue_mohr: .78 degrees on the motor
10:07 PM rue_mohr: I should use a higher reduction
10:08 PM rue_mohr: my target is a 0.1mm resolution
10:08 PM rue_mohr: as I'm doing wood and its a big machine I think thats all quite tight
10:08 PM rue_mohr: so 0.1mm is about 0.78 degrees on the motor
10:09 PM Tom_L: woodworker in lcnc would beg to differe with you
10:09 PM rue_mohr: I dont think I can go higher
10:09 PM Tom_L: he's kinda anal though
10:09 PM rue_mohr: if I used a stepper and a leadscrew and was willing to fall asleep waiting for the machine to traverse 3 feet then sure
10:10 PM rue_mohr: but I want jogging at 1m/s
10:10 PM Tom_L: you want it to knock you down if you get in the way
10:11 PM rue_mohr: I dont want to do a lot of waiting for it
10:12 PM Tom_L: what software is gonna drive this one?
10:12 PM rue_mohr: GRBL
10:12 PM rue_mohr: I'm out of money for this
10:12 PM rue_mohr: I already hit the $40 overbudget
10:13 PM rue_mohr: actually, if I take back a peice of chain it didn't need, I'll have $6
10:13 PM Tom_L: how's the job situation?
10:13 PM rue_mohr: my last day is friday
10:14 PM rue_mohr: and so far I been able to keep it full time for insurance
10:14 PM Tom_L: will they buck that?
10:14 PM rue_mohr: ?
10:14 PM Tom_L: contest it
10:14 PM rue_mohr: I dont think so
10:16 PM Tom_L: got anything lined up?
10:16 PM rue_mohr: a bit too much actually
10:16 PM Tom_L: for you or for a normal human?
10:16 PM rue_mohr: a securrity installer, the hospital and maybe the school district
10:17 PM Tom_L: last 2 sound more stable
10:17 PM rue_mohr: yea :)
10:19 PM Tom_L: time to sleep
10:19 PM rue_mohr: k
10:19 PM rue_mohr: zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
10:19 PM Tom_L: kindof a mess here last couple weeks
10:20 PM Tom_L: personal stuff
10:20 PM rue_mohr: oh dear
10:20 PM Tom_L: not me directly
10:20 PM rue_mohr: I spent the end of the work day ruining a lot of lamacoid material on my cnc
10:21 PM Tom_L: what's that stuff?
10:21 PM rue_mohr: lamacoid
10:21 PM rue_mohr: the routed labels
10:21 PM Tom_L: that's what i though
10:21 PM rue_mohr: its like painted pvc
10:22 PM rue_mohr: technically its a microlayer
10:22 PM rue_mohr: I had a piece come loose twice on me
10:22 PM rue_mohr: first time a screw let go, the second time it broke
10:23 PM rue_mohr: and I had to re-plane the bed like 5 times
10:28 PM Tom_L: huh
10:28 PM Tom_L: try double back tape?
10:34 PM rue_shop3: 2nd time was
11:16 PM rue_mohr: i need to sit down with that plastic injector and see if I can figure it out
