02:21 AM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230909.jpg
02:21 AM rue_mohr: thats the control box, shall I connect pwoer and see if it explodes?
03:00 AM rue_mohr: it exploded
03:01 AM rue_mohr: I put a 0.5A fuse on that neon lamp incase, and i was right
03:01 AM rue_mohr: needed a resistor
03:12 AM rue_mohr: my system is goin down, its 1am, I'll have to bang out the heater tommorow.
04:01 AM rue_bed: morning tom
04:49 AM Tom_L: morning
07:19 AM aandrew: morning
11:55 AM rue_bed: morning
11:56 AM rue_bed: raining
11:57 AM rue_bed: so, the goal is to get the heater done up, I'll need to insulate it, extend the power lines, and extend the mounting bracket
12:05 PM aandrew: hm, good deal on a flux/mig mini welder from canadaina tire
12:05 PM aandrew: 50% off
12:23 PM rue_mohr: which half are they excluding?
12:25 PM Tom_L: lunch min done.
12:25 PM Tom_L: back to the coal mine
12:27 PM rue_mohr: diggy diggy
02:15 PM rue_mohr: scooping down some breakfast
02:16 PM rue_mohr: I'll get dressed and do up the injector
02:16 PM rue_mohr: I have an idea for the mount
02:16 PM rue_mohr: part of an idea anyhow
03:34 PM rue_shop3: huh, wrapping this will not be striaght forward
03:34 PM rue_shop3: I have a lot of things to get around
03:35 PM rue_shop3: I sheathed the thermocouple line with some braid, so noise shouldn't be an issue
03:40 PM rue_shop3: bleck, weather is awful
03:40 PM rue_shop3: ok I dont seem to have any mineral wool in non-burned-to-hell condition
03:40 PM rue_shop3: I think what I have here is normal insulation, but it should be fine at ~300c
03:40 PM rue_shop3: just not 1200c
03:43 PM Tom_L: we're not molding aluminum ya know
03:52 PM rue_shop3: :)
03:53 PM Tom_L: howzitgoin?
04:06 PM rue_shop3: jabs but no blood
04:06 PM rue_shop3: (sheet metal work)
04:09 PM rue_shop3: how do the bands go on those wire pipe clamps
04:10 PM rue_shop3: https://content.instructables.com/ORIG/FM6/JRDO/IF9UBTDK/FM6JRDOIF9UBTDK.jpg?auto=webp&frame=1&crop=3:2&width=320&md=f19c51acbb073907ac03a85278ef16eb
04:10 PM rue_shop3: ?
04:22 PM rue_shop3: ok its wrapped
04:22 PM rue_shop3: I need a cord and a mount
05:09 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230922.jpg
05:09 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230923.jpg
05:09 PM rue_mohr: I slipped the thermocouple line into a sheath cause its gonna be hanging out right with the power lines
05:09 PM rue_mohr: still pouring rain
05:14 PM Tom_L: taking shape
05:26 PM aandrew: rue_mohr: that's your injection mold control?
05:33 PM rue_mohr: yes
05:33 PM rue_mohr: just a temp controller
05:33 PM rue_mohr: the injecting is manual
05:38 PM rue_mohr: crazy amounts of rain!!!!
05:41 PM Tom_L: we had that a few days back
06:24 PM rue_shop3: it stopped, let the flooding commense
06:24 PM rue_shop3: cord is on
06:24 PM rue_shop3: I need a mounting scheme
06:28 PM rue_shop3: maybe I just put a handle on it for now and see where it goes
06:32 PM * rue_shop3 scrathces his head...
06:39 PM rue_mohr: 4pm, I need some lunch
06:39 PM rue_mohr: ponder a handle
06:41 PM Tom_L: reindeer in july!
07:07 PM rue_mohr: think I should have done that differently
07:07 PM rue_mohr: (the handle)
07:20 PM rue_mohr: ugh, I ahve to make a bunch of 1/4" lock rings
07:54 PM rue_mohr: it looks like the follower count it wiggling, interesting
07:56 PM rue_mohr: 2573
07:57 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230928.jpg
07:58 PM rue_mohr: so...
07:58 PM rue_mohr: I suppose lets try one?
08:04 PM Tom_L: i'm game
08:04 PM Tom_L: want me to or should you?
08:04 PM Tom_L: :)
08:05 PM Tom_L: put the screws in the mold but not touching the other half
08:13 PM rue_shop3: setting it up in the drillpress was interseting
08:17 PM rue_shop3: trying to get a bunch of plastic ready
08:21 PM Tom_L: you gonna clamp it or just use the pressure from the press?
08:23 PM rue_shop3: just the press
08:23 PM rue_shop3: but
08:23 PM rue_shop3: I need to mind
08:23 PM rue_shop3: its gonna try to ooze like crazy when I take it oof
08:24 PM Tom_L: no way to pull the piston back after you're done?
08:25 PM Tom_L: you gonna make a big mess...
08:25 PM Tom_L: kinda like a caulking gun
08:26 PM Tom_L: don't overload the chamber
08:26 PM rue_shop3: pliers
08:27 PM Tom_L: wear gloves
08:27 PM rue_shop3: ok, that should be enough
08:28 PM rue_shop3: lets make a mess
08:28 PM Tom_L: :)
08:42 PM rue_shop3: found a null cap, got it clamped to the drillpress to stay up
08:42 PM rue_shop3: heat is on
08:42 PM rue_shop3: heating...
08:45 PM rue_shop3: hah, froze in the runner
08:45 PM rue_shop3: I'll keep playing
08:45 PM rue_shop3: it looks good tho!
08:46 PM Tom_L: let's see!!
08:46 PM Tom_L: so maybe you need to warm the mold some
08:47 PM Tom_L: and inject it quickly
08:47 PM rue_shop3: trying, its a juggle
08:47 PM Tom_L: i bet
08:48 PM Tom_L: you need more hands
08:48 PM Tom_L: did the mold come apart ok?
08:54 PM rue_shop3: damnit, the setup fell
08:54 PM rue_shop3: seems ok, but arg
08:54 PM rue_shop3: its freeing too fast
08:57 PM rue_shop3: the roblem is that picking it up to mvoe it anywhere and it oozes plastic everywhere
08:57 PM Tom_L: you had that on the alum mold too at first didn't you?
08:57 PM Tom_L: yeah
08:58 PM Tom_L: you need some sort of cap for the tip
08:58 PM rue_shop3: another problem tist hat I cant trap it in the drpess press, I'm from the bench to the press and its lifting the press
08:58 PM rue_shop3: I have a cap, I mean it oozes FAST
08:58 PM Tom_L: heh
08:59 PM Tom_L: is the piston following it as it oozes?
08:59 PM Tom_L: find a way to keep it still maybe that would help
09:04 PM rue_shop3: I'll try preheating the mold a bit
09:06 PM Tom_L: in your melting pot?? :)
09:11 PM rue_shop3: oh god that must have worked
09:11 PM rue_shop3: ok, there is plastic pooled EVERYWHERE I need to shut down for a bit
09:12 PM Tom_L: having fun yet?
09:17 PM rue_mohr: it squirted out all sides of the mold
09:17 PM rue_mohr: and up one of the seperation holes
09:17 PM rue_mohr: so I thumbed the screws in before it hardened
09:18 PM Tom_L: maybe you should clamp it?
09:18 PM Tom_L: and give it a little less goo :)
09:19 PM Tom_L: sounds like it hardens right away
09:20 PM Tom_L: when you use the screws, one side tends to come up ahead of the other, you need to pop the high side a bit to even it out
09:20 PM Tom_L: or the pins will bind
09:23 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230930.jpg
09:23 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230931.jpg
09:23 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230932.jpg
09:23 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230933.jpg
09:23 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230936.jpg
09:23 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230937.jpg
09:24 PM rue_mohr: the platic isn't sticking to the mold at all, so far so good
09:24 PM rue_mohr: waitng for that one to cool
09:25 PM rue_mohr: it would be good if I has omething likea ball check in the nozzle to create some backpressure
09:26 PM Tom_L: cool
09:26 PM Tom_L: yeah you need to figure out some kindof check
09:26 PM Tom_L: i dunno what they use for that
09:26 PM Tom_L: good i put screws in it i guess
09:26 PM Tom_L: i bet you're gonna have to clamp it
09:26 PM rue_mohr: just a ball and spring to create that backpressure, so you have to be on the piston for plastic to flow
09:27 PM Tom_L: yeah
09:27 PM rue_mohr: temperatures were way too high
09:27 PM Tom_L: well we're learning though
09:27 PM Tom_L: did heating the mold help?
09:27 PM Tom_L: obviously...
09:27 PM rue_mohr: YES
09:27 PM rue_mohr: I heated it to much tho
09:27 PM rue_mohr: didn't measure the temp
09:28 PM rue_mohr: used 75% of what I preheat pcbs with
09:28 PM rue_mohr: with it all that thin, I wonder if the top half filled
09:28 PM Tom_L: time tells all
09:29 PM Tom_L: looks like it oozed out all over
09:29 PM Tom_L: how much pressure did that take?
09:31 PM rue_mohr: water cooled it off fast
09:31 PM rue_mohr: lets seee...
09:32 PM rue_mohr: who, does NOT want to split
09:33 PM Tom_L: it will come up uneven so you need to pop the high side or the pins will get stuck
09:34 PM rue_mohr: yup
09:34 PM Tom_L: you get it apart?
09:35 PM rue_mohr: not yet, the plastic trapped one edge
09:35 PM Tom_L: cram a knife in the corner
09:36 PM Tom_L: (not a good one)
09:36 PM Tom_L: i had plans to mill a slot in the edge and forgot to
09:36 PM rue_mohr: its comming
09:36 PM Tom_L: for a pry
09:38 PM rue_mohr: :S too hot for sure
09:38 PM Tom_L: still hot inside?
09:39 PM rue_mohr: no...
09:40 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230938.jpg
09:40 PM rue_mohr: antlers are pretty good
09:41 PM Tom_L: is it burnt or what?
09:41 PM rue_mohr: it'll take me a while to get this out
09:41 PM Tom_L: yeah it looks like it filled ok
09:41 PM rue_mohr: bubbled to hell
09:41 PM Tom_L: what about the ring?
09:41 PM Tom_L: no ring it appears
09:42 PM Tom_L: no where for the air to escape it
09:42 PM rue_mohr: yea, if plan went well, it'd have been thicker and not had bubbles
09:42 PM Tom_L: bubbles are probably because it's too hot
09:43 PM rue_mohr: it litersally squirted out on me
09:43 PM Tom_L: hey, i call it success anyway!
09:43 PM rue_mohr: way too hot
09:43 PM rue_mohr: ok
09:43 PM rue_mohr: ...
09:43 PM * rue_mohr tries to pick out the "success"
09:43 PM Tom_L: haha
09:43 PM Tom_L: so less heat on the squirter and about the same heat on the mold?
09:43 PM Tom_L: or was the mold too hot too?
09:44 PM rue_mohr: mold was too hot too
09:44 PM Tom_L: ok
09:44 PM rue_mohr: I thought it was about 100c but didn't measure
09:45 PM Tom_L: so the runners etc appear to work ok
09:45 PM rue_mohr: yes
09:45 PM Tom_L: antlers look good
09:45 PM rue_mohr: mold heating is requried...
09:45 PM Tom_L: just not quite that much..
09:46 PM Tom_L: so it did stick to the mold?
09:47 PM rue_mohr: a bit
09:47 PM rue_mohr: in a burnt toast kinda way
09:47 PM Tom_L: heh
09:47 PM rue_mohr: I think I'll clear with a good fill
09:47 PM Tom_L: normally maybe it won't
09:48 PM rue_mohr: I'll show you the cold ones in a bit
09:48 PM Tom_L: k
09:48 PM rue_mohr: overheating made it all brittle as hell
09:49 PM Tom_L: will it clean up?
09:49 PM rue_mohr: probably
09:51 PM rue_mohr: cant get it in one piece :(
09:52 PM Tom_L: got too hot
09:53 PM Tom_L: it looks like the antlers released on half of it ok
09:53 PM Tom_L: those would be cooler probably
09:54 PM Tom_L: also i meant to warn you about the sharp edges inside the mold. they need to be sharp
10:10 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230939.jpg
10:10 PM rue_mohr: ok, lets not repeat these mistakes
10:12 PM rue_mohr: oh no, wait
10:12 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230940.jpg
10:13 PM Tom_L: really surprised about the antlers
10:13 PM Tom_L: they had to be cooler
10:14 PM rue_mohr: I was able to grab them with side cutters everywere and coax them out
10:14 PM Tom_L: so do you think once things are right that it will stick?
10:14 PM rue_mohr: no
10:14 PM Tom_L: what color is it supposed to be?
10:15 PM Tom_L: can't tell if it's burnt or just what
10:15 PM rue_mohr: show ya why...
10:15 PM rue_mohr: well, its a mix, came out grey
10:15 PM Tom_L: ok
10:16 PM Tom_L: was it hard to get the 'funnel' part out?
10:16 PM rue_mohr: no
10:16 PM rue_mohr: not at all
10:16 PM Tom_L: good
10:16 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230941.jpg
10:16 PM rue_mohr: THIS is why I think it'll all be ok
10:17 PM Tom_L: yeah
10:17 PM rue_mohr: thats before I preheated the mold
10:17 PM rue_mohr: pushed right out with a screwdriver, no problem
10:18 PM rue_mohr: :/ there are a few minor dings in the pattern from me getting that all out
10:18 PM Tom_L: so you probably won't need the holes that guy was talking about
10:19 PM rue_mohr: I dont think so
10:20 PM Tom_L: i think the mold should be warm but not necessarily hot enough to melt the plastic but to keep it flowing
10:20 PM Tom_L: so somewhat less than the extruder
10:21 PM rue_mohr: tyea
10:21 PM rue_mohr: I'll have to feel itout
10:21 PM rue_mohr: I thought about 100c, cause the plastic runs about 180
10:22 PM Tom_L: screw it up, we can always make more
10:22 PM Tom_L: are the antlers too thick?
10:23 PM rue_mohr: wondering if it needs some relief angle
10:23 PM rue_mohr: have to be a special bit tho
10:23 PM Tom_L: or make it thinner so that wall is short
10:23 PM rue_mohr: maybe
10:24 PM rue_mohr: haha now I have to go clean up the shop mess
10:24 PM Tom_L: heh
10:36 PM rue_shop3: wow
10:36 PM rue_shop3: severly overheated, its all brittle as hell
10:36 PM rue_shop3: I'll have to purge the remaining plastic out of it before I try again
10:44 PM Tom_L: keeping track of the settings?
10:44 PM Tom_L: what was that tube made out of?
10:44 PM Tom_L: steel?
10:44 PM Tom_L: stainless?
10:44 PM rue_mohr: well 200c is way too hot
10:45 PM rue_mohr: just steel
10:45 PM rue_mohr: the sensor must be in a coldspot
10:45 PM Tom_L: did you turn the inside of it or was it smooth?
10:45 PM rue_mohr: not sure hot
10:45 PM rue_mohr: yes
10:45 PM rue_mohr: air could get by, but after the plastic was it there, it sealed
10:47 PM Tom_L: how much was left in the tube?
10:48 PM rue_mohr: the piston does not go to the bottom
10:48 PM Tom_L: oh
10:48 PM rue_mohr: there is probably 1.5 inches^2 thats in the tip at the bottom of stroke
10:48 PM Tom_L: quite a bit
10:49 PM rue_mohr: yea, I had a reason, dont recall what it was
10:49 PM Tom_L: what do you think caused the bubbles?
10:49 PM Tom_L: too hot?
10:49 PM rue_mohr: way too much heat
10:49 PM Tom_L: not just air pockets from melting pieces
10:50 PM rue_mohr: I'll run much lower next time
10:50 PM rue_mohr: no, the air will go to the top
10:50 PM Tom_L: k
10:53 PM Tom_L: gnite
