12:02 AM rue_mohr: I'll try wrapping a stove element around it tommorow
12:23 AM rue_mohr: pipe with a welded on cap, then machined to a pretty close fit
05:25 AM Tom_L: .
09:03 AM Tom_L: i wonder about air pockets in the cylinder
09:03 AM Tom_L: especially when you retract it to refill it
12:51 PM rue_mohr: commercial machines have a vent and for some reason on the air gets out
12:52 PM rue_mohr: ly
02:28 PM rue_shop3: found the box of elements
02:37 PM rue_shop3: small elements are quite long...
02:39 PM rue_shop3: I can fit 18 turns...
02:39 PM rue_shop3: 1.8m!
02:40 PM rue_shop3: the element is 1.2m
02:40 PM rue_shop3: this should work!
03:02 PM rue_shop3: THAT was a lot of work
03:05 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230795.jpg
03:05 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230796.jpg
03:14 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230797.jpg
03:14 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230798.jpg
03:19 PM Tom_L: little finger!
03:19 PM Tom_L: don't leave it there...
03:19 PM Tom_L: does it still heat after you bent it all out of shape?
03:37 PM rue_mohr: I'll check the element, but I think its ok
03:37 PM rue_mohr: a few times when I'v done that I break the sheath
03:43 PM rue_mohr: 2562
03:43 PM rue_mohr: up, k, I'm never sure
03:47 PM rue_shop3: 37.8 ohms
03:48 PM rue_shop3: if it doesn't go up much thats about 380w
04:00 PM Tom_L: nice
04:00 PM Tom_L: where you gonna put the thermocouple?
04:03 PM Tom_L: what are the rods off the side of the pipe for?
04:15 PM rue_mohr: mounting
05:14 PM rue_shop3: mowerbot is being a handfull
05:21 PM Tom_L: not behaving like it should?
05:29 PM rue_mohr: oh its just not behaving
05:29 PM rue_mohr: it attacked 3 other lawn mower, the cement mixer, the ladder, and the welding holder arm.
05:40 PM Tom_L: bad sensor?
05:45 PM rue_shop3: no, the design has... a personality
05:45 PM rue_shop3: 30c overshot to 47c
05:46 PM Tom_L: the element?
05:47 PM rue_shop3: yep
05:47 PM rue_shop3: dialing up to 190c with some test plastic
05:49 PM rue_shop3: hah smoke smoke
05:52 PM Tom_L: oops
05:53 PM rue_shop3: just the oil off the element
05:53 PM Tom_L: ahh
05:53 PM Tom_L: how are you controlling it?
05:54 PM rue_shop3: I have a thermal controller for building a filament extruder
05:54 PM rue_shop3: this is pretty close
05:55 PM Tom_L: melting milk cartons?
05:56 PM rue_shop3: old prints
05:56 PM rue_shop3: over the years I'v accumulated about 2kg
05:56 PM Tom_L: heh
05:56 PM rue_shop3: bumping to 200c, its only rubbery
06:02 PM rue_shop3: ok, win
06:03 PM rue_shop3: box it, ship it
06:04 PM Tom_L: what?
06:04 PM rue_mohr: stand by for picture
06:04 PM Tom_L: oh you got it working?
06:04 PM Tom_L: cool
06:05 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230808.jpg
06:05 PM Tom_L: you should mock up some huge steppers etc on a table to look like a reprap :)
06:06 PM Tom_L: so it's looking very doable
06:06 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230807.jpg
06:06 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230809.jpg
06:07 PM rue_mohr: stupid resistive element it better :)
06:08 PM Tom_L: hah
06:08 PM Tom_L: you wanted the other one to work...
06:09 PM rue_mohr: direct heating!
06:09 PM rue_mohr: it would be better
06:09 PM rue_mohr: I opened the coil a bit too much its not making awesome contact with the top, I think thats ok tho
06:10 PM Tom_L: same with my spindle cooler but it worked great
06:12 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Assembly/spindle_cooler/Cooler1.jpg
06:12 PM Tom_L: full of water so it wouldn' collapse
06:14 PM Tom_L: does it stay pliable long enough to squirt thru the mold you think?
06:17 PM rue_mohr: its pretty goopy
06:17 PM Tom_L: i bet it works good
06:17 PM rue_mohr: I need to insulate it, and mount the thermocouple properly, and add a case ground, and extend the element wires, and and and
06:17 PM Tom_L: you gonna mount it to a hydraulic jack or something?
06:18 PM rue_mohr: the drillpress might do it
06:18 PM rue_mohr: that was just by hand
06:18 PM Tom_L: oh wow
06:18 PM rue_mohr: and I dont think it was really warmed up right
06:18 PM rue_mohr: when its all togethor I can try other plastics too
06:18 PM Tom_L: i wonder if the nozzle might be a bit big
06:19 PM Tom_L: maybe not
06:19 PM rue_mohr: not sure why I went that size
06:19 PM Tom_L: is it threaded in?
06:19 PM rue_mohr: no
06:19 PM rue_mohr: welded
06:19 PM Tom_L: :/
06:19 PM rue_mohr: its meant to be a pressure fit tho
06:20 PM Tom_L: yeah
06:20 PM rue_mohr: then it "always seals"
06:20 PM Tom_L: you think the force from it will hold the mold good enough?
06:20 PM Tom_L: or add clamps to the mold to hold it together?
06:21 PM Tom_L: plenty of stuff to test
06:22 PM rue_mohr: I think the cavity will fill before it starts to push apart
06:22 PM rue_mohr: see then we can all be finish christmas stuff
06:23 PM rue_mohr: ed
06:23 PM rue_mohr: it took a lot of plastic to preload it
06:23 PM Tom_L: yeah i don't think you'll use that much
06:24 PM rue_mohr: the piston doesn't make it right down to the bottom
06:24 PM rue_mohr: but it doesn't look like much air came out, and I stuck in a lot of prints that were 70% air
06:24 PM rue_mohr: hoping its all just coming out around the piston
06:25 PM Tom_L: does the goo get past the piston?
06:26 PM rue_mohr: no, cold end
06:26 PM rue_mohr: it started to stick a bit
06:27 PM Tom_L: may want a handle or something on the piston in case you gotta pull it out
06:27 PM rue_mohr: hmm, yea
06:27 PM rue_mohr: need to pull it after each one
06:28 PM Tom_L: i know
06:28 PM rue_mohr: should also have somewhere to put it after the mold is full
06:28 PM rue_mohr: while a mess around getting it ready again
06:28 PM rue_mohr: how many raindeer you want?
06:28 PM rue_mohr: 20? 78?
06:28 PM rue_mohr: :)
06:29 PM Tom_L: hah
06:29 PM Tom_L: i just wanna see it work
06:29 PM rue_mohr: you need to give one to everyone tho
06:29 PM rue_mohr: family, friends, souse-in-laws
06:30 PM rue_mohr: the person at the gas station
06:30 PM rue_mohr: everyone
06:30 PM Tom_L: heh
06:31 PM Tom_L: should figure out things you need molded now
06:31 PM rue_mohr: haha
06:31 PM rue_mohr: project boxes!!!
06:31 PM Tom_L: that would be hard to machine i think
06:31 PM Tom_L: on this mill anyway
06:31 PM Tom_L: deep pockets
06:31 PM rue_mohr: :)
06:31 PM Tom_L: but yeah..
06:33 PM Tom_L: you're gonna use up your scrap in a hurry i got a feeling
06:33 PM rue_mohr: geez, scrolling thru my followers is like an A-list of interesting sounding people...
06:33 PM rue_mohr: oh plastic is NOT a problem
06:33 PM rue_mohr: have you seen the mountians of plastic I get rid of from just 1 printer stripdown?
06:34 PM Tom_L: well that's true
06:34 PM rue_mohr: I'll need a grinder tho :/
06:34 PM rue_mohr: a rotating screen with a chewer in the middle
06:34 PM rue_mohr: they stay in till their too small
06:35 PM Tom_L: you could make some hella filament with that thing
06:35 PM rue_mohr: can you think of any helpfull plastic jigs for the cnc?
06:35 PM rue_mohr: hah
06:35 PM rue_mohr: well, I might try to find a way to make a filament adapter
06:35 PM Tom_L: i don't use much plastic on mine
06:36 PM rue_mohr: no I mean for holding bits when not in use or someting
06:36 PM Tom_L: oh
06:36 PM rue_mohr: maybe even a consumable jig of some kind
06:36 PM rue_mohr: soft jaws?
06:36 PM Tom_L: those would flex too much
06:36 PM rue_mohr: hard when the machine isn't busier
06:37 PM Tom_L: alum is questionable if they're tall
06:37 PM rue_mohr: huh
06:37 PM rue_mohr: I suppose...
06:37 PM Tom_L: i got a bunch of spare jaws ready to go
06:37 PM rue_mohr: extrusions are in the realm of posability too
06:37 PM Tom_L: triggers?
06:38 PM rue_mohr: meh, I like the aluminum ones
06:38 PM Tom_L: yeah they're stronger for sure
06:38 PM Tom_L: you could try squirting some goo in the mold to try one
06:39 PM rue_mohr: dont think it would seal right, and I cant really press hard or its wedging it apart
06:39 PM rue_mohr: could try tho
06:39 PM rue_mohr: I have to clean it all up a bunch
06:39 PM Tom_L: meh, don't mess it up. you got a good thing goin with it right now
06:39 PM rue_mohr: I found a case I can stuff it all into
06:40 PM rue_mohr: I have some mineral insulation I can wrap it in
06:40 PM rue_mohr: not sure what I could wrap that in...
06:42 PM rue_mohr: ok, is there a stupid little plastic thing that due to covid just isn't around anymore?
06:43 PM rue_mohr: huh, I wonder, keyboard caps...
06:43 PM rue_mohr: for cherry switches
06:43 PM Tom_L: i'll let you machine that mold
06:44 PM rue_mohr: hahah
06:44 PM rue_mohr: ok I'm gonna strip down some printers
06:44 PM Tom_L: k
06:44 PM Tom_L: good progress weekend
06:46 PM rue_mohr: I'm excited to know if this works
06:46 PM Tom_L: led pumpkins for halloween
06:53 PM rue_shop3: no idea how to mold that one
06:54 PM rue_shop3: I suppose the art of 3+ peice molds and the retract mechanisms for them is a whole nother art
07:00 PM Tom_L: yeah
08:21 PM Tom_L: you know i almost had a 3 piece figured out for the handle
08:21 PM Tom_L: but you said it would make it too heavy
10:02 PM rue_mohr: yea they want it to be really light
