#garfield Calendar
12:00 AM Tom_L: seemed to kick off pretty good this year though you think?
12:09 AM rue_shop4: its way ahead of us
12:09 AM rue_shop4: I'm just gonna print up the invoices and compare
12:09 AM rue_shop4: so then we should have enough heads for the year
12:09 AM rue_shop4: and I should print about 20 more handles
12:09 AM Tom_L: what's the most popular length?
12:09 AM Tom_L: the 3" is the odd one for parts
12:09 AM rue_shop1: iirc we worked out it was 3" and 6", so we premade some stock of them
12:09 AM rue_shop1: but
12:09 AM Tom_L: and i don't have a trigger model for it for the nozzle
12:09 AM Tom_L: just the one that has the wire attached
12:09 AM rue_shop1: its not proving, so far we only had orders for 2 3"
12:09 AM rue_shop1: yea, the 6"+ are more numberfull
12:09 AM rue_shop1: :)
12:09 AM Tom_L: and those parts are all the same save the tube & wire
12:09 AM rue_shop1: so, I been up since 2am eh?
12:09 AM rue_shop1: yea
12:09 AM Tom_L: i dunno have you?
12:09 AM rue_shop1: yea, I was up before you said morning
12:09 AM Tom_L: i may have been too
12:09 AM Tom_L: don't remember
12:10 AM Tom_L: https://www.facebook.com/RRSpring/
12:10 AM rue_shop4: I suspect our volumes are still too low
12:10 AM Tom_L: no that's not it
12:10 AM rue_shop4: were looking at 30 springs a year
12:11 AM Tom_L: yeah i was just curious cause i remember seeing one of them
12:15 AM Tom_L: why do they mark them if they're already cut?
12:16 AM Tom_L: do they mark every tree or just boundaries of harvest areas?
12:18 AM Tom_L: ok a new day is dawning here i should sleep
12:23 AM rue_shop4: grading
12:43 AM rue_shop4: ok so, 20 more handles should do it for the year
12:45 AM rue_mohr: food maybe
04:33 AM Tom_L: morning
10:32 AM rue_bed2: mmm
10:32 AM rue_bed2: wow this is early for a weekend
10:32 AM rue_bed2: I wonder what the weather is going to do
10:33 AM Tom_L: sunny and warm
10:34 AM rue_bed2: moon would like to do some casting
10:35 AM Tom_L: tell moon you have some more material for the pot
10:41 AM Tom_L: what does he have to cast?
10:48 AM rue_mohr: he just wants to cast a brick for shaping later,
10:48 AM rue_mohr: maybe I can appeal to some logic and have him rough out the thing he wants
10:48 AM rue_mohr: I need to get better at speed-mols
10:48 AM rue_mohr: molds
10:52 AM Tom_L: teach him how to use solidworks
10:52 AM Tom_L: then make a thing and print it
10:52 AM Tom_L: then mold it
11:09 AM rue_mohr: hahah I put on supper yesterday and fell asleep
11:10 AM Tom_L: BREAKFAST!!
11:12 AM rue_mohr: yea, It realyl needs reheating
11:13 AM Tom_L: possibly all dried out too
11:26 AM rue_mohr: ok, 4/20 handles printed
11:26 AM rue_mohr: working on 5,6
11:27 AM Tom_L: :)
11:27 AM Tom_L: rue_mohr has his gusto back!
11:28 AM Tom_L: how long does a handle print take?
11:28 AM rue_mohr: oh like 2 hours
11:28 AM Tom_L: so about an hour ea
11:29 AM rue_mohr: oops, no, 6.5
11:29 AM rue_mohr: I'm doing 2 at once
11:29 AM rue_mohr: 1 per machine
11:29 AM Tom_L: oh
11:29 AM Tom_L: i thought you put 2 per machine
11:29 AM rue_mohr: I dont want to do 2 per, if a machine screws up, I lose a lot of material
11:29 AM Tom_L: true
11:33 AM Tom_L: so did you fire up the tumbler?
11:34 AM Tom_L: may as well wake up the neighborhood
11:36 AM Tom_L: i kinda wanna see what sort of job it does... i'm considering making one
11:38 AM rue_mohr: still in pajamas
11:38 AM rue_mohr: oh you didnt see?
11:38 AM rue_mohr: its like a random orbit sander to all sides
11:38 AM Tom_L: no
11:38 AM rue_mohr: oh
11:39 AM Tom_L: i know what they do, just wondered about the performance of a home made one
11:39 AM rue_mohr: ok
11:39 AM Tom_L: i'm thinking a hex tube that turns
11:39 AM rue_mohr: its raining, so its a perfect day to run it
11:39 AM Tom_L: or something
11:39 AM rue_mohr: the motor will stay cool and the material will stay wet
11:40 AM rue_mohr: this is just volcanic rock from the garden store
11:40 AM rue_mohr: red
11:40 AM Tom_L: i don't mind getting some material
11:40 AM rue_mohr: :) I cant!
11:40 AM Tom_L: just not sure how to make a small one
11:40 AM rue_mohr: a propane tank like mine?
11:41 AM Tom_L: that or just get one
11:41 AM rue_mohr: you see how priveleged you are there eh?
11:41 AM rue_mohr: as far as this goes
11:41 AM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/Leegol-Electric-Vibratory-Tumbler-Polishing/dp/B08FFLF35T/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=vibratory+tumbler&qid=1648311920&sr=8-8
11:42 AM rue_mohr: I'd bet there are maybe 200 people in BC that know what one is
11:42 AM Tom_L: heh
11:42 AM Tom_L: problem is, i wouldn't use it enough to justify one
11:42 AM rue_mohr: that looks tiny and has a huge price tag
11:43 AM Tom_L: good ones are alot more
11:43 AM Tom_L: my bud had a big one
11:43 AM rue_mohr: yea
11:43 AM rue_mohr: I was looking at vibrators for bowl sorters
11:43 AM rue_mohr: wholy *(^*^&*%
11:43 AM Tom_L: like 10-15 gal size
11:43 AM rue_mohr: so I started making one
11:43 AM rue_mohr: I have a zillion screws to seperate
11:45 AM Tom_L: i need a small low rpm AC motor
11:45 AM Tom_L: mains
11:45 AM rue_mohr: fan?
11:45 AM Tom_L: hmm
11:45 AM Tom_L: multi speeds...
11:45 AM rue_mohr: cieling fan
11:45 AM Tom_L: too big
11:45 AM rue_mohr: oh
11:46 AM Tom_L: this thing needs to be small to fit the workspace
11:46 AM rue_mohr: old cnc stepper?
11:46 AM rue_mohr: too slow?
11:46 AM Tom_L: probably
11:46 AM Tom_L: i do have the control i took off the sherline though
11:46 AM Tom_L: seems like overkill
11:47 AM rue_mohr: 555 as a step generator
11:47 AM Tom_L: a tube sitting on some skate wheels somehow driven
11:47 AM Tom_L: sewer pipe with a cap on the end with some veins glued inside to disrupt the media
11:48 AM rue_mohr: mines a shaker eh?
11:48 AM rue_mohr: horizontal
11:48 AM Tom_L: i know
11:48 AM Tom_L: i've seen it
11:48 AM rue_mohr: are you thinking tumbler?
11:48 AM Tom_L: probably
11:48 AM rue_mohr: I did one wtih..
11:50 AM rue_mohr: ? I cant find it
11:50 AM Tom_L: i'll probably blow it off anyway
11:51 AM rue_mohr: HP printer paper feed wheels on some long shafts turning a drum made of some 10" pvc pipe with HDPE end caps
11:51 AM Tom_L: not a high priority
11:51 AM rue_mohr: so we need to send you money sometime!
11:51 AM Tom_L: i like money
11:51 AM Tom_L: i just never see any
11:52 AM Tom_L: all i hear is a big woooossshhhh
11:52 AM Tom_L: and it's gone
11:52 AM rue_mohr: the shipping was 56, iirc,
11:52 AM Tom_L: i dunno, sounds about right
11:52 AM rue_mohr: sean said you said like 69c/part, that seems too low?
11:53 AM Tom_L: wasn't sure who i was talking to
11:53 AM rue_mohr: hah sorry
11:53 AM Tom_L: but i think that's what the material was figuring what i could get out of it per part
11:54 AM rue_mohr: oh, we should get you more than that ho
11:54 AM rue_mohr: tho
11:54 AM Tom_L: it's not about that.. it's something to do as long as i don't go broke doing it
11:54 AM Tom_L: and you seemed to be in a pinch
11:55 AM rue_mohr: yea
11:55 AM rue_mohr: there were 20 A9/10 and ... I dont remember how many latches, 32?
11:55 AM rue_mohr: I can go see when I'm in the shop
11:56 AM Tom_L: i'm set to make A8 i think too if those take too long
11:56 AM rue_mohr: hah, I will count 'em up as I put em in the tubmler, cause that thing eats parts
11:57 AM Tom_L: A3, A8, A9, A10, A12
11:57 AM Tom_L: i think all have updated fixtures/programs
12:00 PM rue_mohr: ok, I need to have a shower and get dressed
12:00 PM rue_mohr: need to watch the phone I think too
12:15 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A12_New/Mods/A12_new_batch1.jpg
12:15 PM Tom_L: i take pics cause memory fades
12:28 PM Tom_L: looks like 20 & 35
12:28 PM Tom_L: but you broke a couple so meh..
12:32 PM rue_mohr: 20, 35 yep
12:33 PM rue_mohr: I dont think I'v ever seen tempered aluminum before
12:33 PM rue_mohr: if I did, I never thought of annealing it
12:34 PM Tom_L: just about all the stuff around here is tempered
12:34 PM Tom_L: aircraft surplus...
12:34 PM Tom_L: i don't think those 3" strips are though because they were from the 'new stock' pile
12:35 PM Tom_L: age hardening is stronger too
12:35 PM Tom_L: the 51 in the T651 means age hardened
12:35 PM rue_mohr: ...
12:35 PM rue_mohr: its definitly true for the cheese in the fridge
12:36 PM Tom_L: heh
12:40 PM Tom_L: https://sciencing.com/list-6680177-effects-plating-304-stainless-steel.html
12:46 PM rue_mohr: eek
12:46 PM Tom_L: hmm that was the wrong link
12:46 PM rue_mohr: ok
12:47 PM Tom_L: the one i wanted told about T hardness
12:47 PM Tom_L: and alum types
12:47 PM rue_mohr: I'll keep it in mind if I'm playing with earospace stuff tho
12:47 PM Tom_L: 2024 6061 7075 etc
12:47 PM rue_mohr: the stuff here is all for boats
12:47 PM Tom_L: not 2024 then
12:47 PM rue_mohr: not sure what "marine grade" is
12:48 PM Tom_L: doesn't weld good or looses strength after welding
12:48 PM Tom_L: likely 6061
12:51 PM rue_mohr: ok, where are some shoes
12:51 PM * Tom_L is out the door
01:02 PM rue_shop4: ugh motor sized
01:19 PM rue_shop4: ok, that motor is *****ed
02:12 PM rue_shop4: new motor mounted and vibrating in progress
02:36 PM Tom_L: get wet?
02:46 PM rue_shop4: it dried up, not sunny hto
02:59 PM rue_shop4: shoudl I come up with a jig for the table saw so I can slot 10 at once in like 2 minutes?
03:04 PM Tom_L: also put a guide on the bandsaw so you can slice the A9 apart putting the tabs against the guide
03:07 PM rue_shop4: drat, I should have kept one out to compare
03:08 PM rue_shop4: I was thinking of a jig for that
03:08 PM Tom_L: you cut the broken one already?
03:09 PM * Tom_L sends rue_shop4 a pic of one
03:09 PM rue_shop4: not yet no
03:10 PM rue_shop4: got the shaker going, 2 cnc, and 2 3d printers
03:10 PM * rue_shop4 waits
03:10 PM Tom_L: busy boy
03:10 PM Tom_L: could be popping chain apart :)
03:20 PM rue_mohr: dont have any
03:23 PM Tom_L: that could be a problem if you're building heads
03:24 PM rue_mohr: I'd made like 9 extra 12" tubes, and I think we used em all already
03:24 PM rue_mohr: wonder if I should make more
03:24 PM Tom_L: doesn't quite fit your 30/yr annual stock
03:25 PM rue_mohr: orders tend to be 12, 16, or 18"
03:25 PM rue_mohr: I dont want to get too far ahead or there will be a design change and we have to scrap it
03:25 PM rue_mohr: gunshy
03:25 PM Tom_L: they should tell you ahead of time what they plan to order :)
03:26 PM rue_mohr: :)
03:26 PM Tom_L: seems to be getting fairly solid now
03:29 PM Tom_L: i should have sent some of those U2 breakout boards but i forgot
03:29 PM rue_shop4: oh we still have 6 12" left
03:29 PM Tom_L: then you'd be set to try them
03:29 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/boards/atmega32u2_breakout/ATMEGA32U2_2.jpg
03:30 PM Tom_L: i _think_ i still have some made up
03:31 PM rue_shop4: I have one still
03:31 PM Tom_L: oh?
03:33 PM rue_shop4: I tink
03:34 PM rue_shop4: 4!
03:34 PM rue_shop4: their in a special drawer
03:34 PM Tom_L: really?
03:34 PM Tom_L: huh
03:34 PM Tom_L: put the chips with them so they'll feel special too
03:35 PM rue_shop4: I need to dive in and use 'em!
03:35 PM rue_shop4: see what the differences are
03:35 PM Tom_L: bootloader for one
03:36 PM rue_shop4: odd headache the past few days
03:36 PM Tom_L: i had a bad one yesterday
03:37 PM Tom_L: so how long do you tumble the parts?
03:37 PM Tom_L: just as a benchmark
03:38 PM rue_shop4: I'm checking on them intermittently
03:38 PM rue_shop4: the edges are off, but it looks like it could go longer
03:38 PM rue_shop4: want to se one?
03:40 PM rue_shop4: looks like I'll get 14pcs of A12 per blank I'v got
03:40 PM rue_shop4: 15 if I set up a bit better
03:41 PM Tom_L: sure
03:42 PM Tom_L: i have plenty of A12 material
03:43 PM Tom_L: probably 100-200pcs
03:43 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230221.jpg
03:43 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230222.jpg
03:44 PM Tom_L: did that smooth out that transition?
03:45 PM rue_mohr: not a lot
03:45 PM rue_mohr: I'm not worried about it
03:46 PM rue_mohr: mostly I like the corner softening
03:46 PM Tom_L: it's more visual i think
03:46 PM Tom_L: oh the chamfer?
03:46 PM rue_mohr: yep
03:46 PM Tom_L: makes it look like a finished part
03:46 PM rue_mohr: its done good at removing any machining marks
03:47 PM Tom_L: i could go deeper with the chamfer if you think it needs it
03:47 PM rue_mohr: I'll run them for a while in there, no hurry
03:47 PM rue_mohr: I dont even have a shamfer on mine
03:47 PM rue_mohr: so it helps that much more
03:47 PM rue_mohr: I threw one of mine in there too
03:47 PM Tom_L: :)
03:48 PM rue_mohr: waiting for the next ones to machine
03:48 PM Tom_L: did moon show?
03:49 PM rue_shop4: no
03:49 PM rue_shop4: battery tester!
03:49 PM rue_shop4: ok
03:51 PM rue_mohr: ah, this is why i dont print 2 handles on one machine at a time
03:51 PM rue_mohr: the nozzel plugged up on the last 2 layers
03:51 PM Tom_L: screwed up?
03:51 PM rue_mohr: totally
03:51 PM Tom_L: can you start there and fix it?
03:57 PM rue_mohr: no
03:57 PM rue_mohr: every so often a roll has a bit of abs in it
03:57 PM rue_mohr: pluggs thenozzel, you have to dial up the temp and clean it out
03:57 PM Tom_L: shouldn't be any..
03:58 PM Tom_L: bad quality control
04:12 PM rue_shop4: yep
04:48 PM rue_shop4: the motor I put on the shaker isn't much better
04:49 PM rue_shop4: the power supply still cant run it continious, its about 10A
04:49 PM rue_shop4: I have to have a variable speed motor, so its complex
04:53 PM rue_shop4: So, a V2 gas engine puts both connector rods on the same crank pin
04:54 PM rue_shop4: if I wanted to make it a steam engine, I'd have to leave it a V
04:59 PM rue_shop4: shopping list: whiteout milk
05:00 PM rue_shop4: fix compressor
05:34 PM Tom_L: mmm
05:55 PM rue_shop4: fixed, had to turn a new pulley
05:56 PM rue_shop4: the lock screw came loose, it sat there with the shaft eating the alumnum pulley for hours
06:16 PM Tom_L: :/
06:22 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230223.jpg
06:23 PM rue_mohr: new pulley!
06:29 PM Tom_L: that should hold
06:33 PM rue_shop4: iiinteresting
06:34 PM rue_shop4: just noticed a difference on the lathces
06:34 PM rue_shop4: thought we were drilling the spring hole in different places, but were not
06:34 PM rue_shop4: the long cut that we do, half cuts thru the spring hole
06:35 PM rue_shop4: yours clear everyting fine tho
06:35 PM rue_shop4: and yea, the new end cut is plenty deep
06:54 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1230228.jpg
06:54 PM rue_mohr: see, one is different
07:43 PM rue_mohr: ok, the first block of A12 is milled
07:57 PM Tom_L: you're making more A12 too?
07:58 PM Tom_L: when i went to fixing mine, i took a good look at the geometry and where it was binding
07:58 PM Tom_L: that's how i came up with the radius etc
07:59 PM Tom_L: moved that short side angle of attack some too
07:59 PM Tom_L: i didn't want to get into the hole at all
08:01 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A12_New/Mods/A12_new_profile_clearance.jpg
08:02 PM Tom_L: you can see the cutter barely has clearance but the spring hole has plenty of material around it
08:02 PM Tom_L: i moved that first angle quite a bit iirc
08:04 PM Tom_L: i think adding the radius helped more than anything
08:05 PM Tom_L: the 3 circles on the cutter are the cutter, the shank and the shank relief undercut near the cutter
08:05 PM Tom_L: it helps alot to have that correct tool geometry in the cad when doing stuff like this
08:07 PM Tom_L: to fix yours i'd have to make a new set of visejaws for you but you still wouldn't have the radius which is a critical dimension there
08:24 PM Tom_L: on yours if you took more off the short end and left the long side so it covered the spring hole it might do better
08:24 PM Tom_L: you might still have to file that inside corner a bit
08:33 PM rue_shop4: its doing ok
08:33 PM rue_shop4: assembling some 18" sprayers
08:34 PM rue_shop4: haivng more issues with the 3d printed parts and warping
08:34 PM rue_shop4: I keep needing a table that can stroke a file vertically
08:35 PM rue_shop4: that I can change the files for
08:35 PM rue_shop4: slow upside down jigsaw
08:41 PM Tom_L: ahh
08:41 PM Tom_L: what about diagonal?
08:53 PM rue_shop4: 8-| assembling these is a lot of work
08:53 PM rue_shop4: diagonal?
08:53 PM rue_shop4: for 5 years, I just been helping make parts sometimes
08:54 PM rue_shop4: assembling 6 from scratch is just OOF
08:55 PM Tom_L: maybe i missed what you meant
08:56 PM Tom_L: i thought you meant turning the print on the table
09:01 PM rue_shop4: oh
09:01 PM rue_shop4: the prints are warping a bit
09:10 PM rue_shop4: ok now they just need cleaning and serial numbers
09:14 PM Tom_L: :)
09:14 PM Tom_L: ready to go out the door or just stock?
09:15 PM Tom_L: oh.. the can lip on A9 10.. it looks ok?
09:22 PM rue_shop4: I made 1 extra
09:22 PM rue_shop4: target right now is 1-1.2mm
09:22 PM rue_shop4: the old target was .97mm
09:23 PM Tom_L: i think i'm in that range iirc
09:23 PM rue_shop4: seems ok, I need a break from sprayers
09:23 PM rue_shop4: for a week or more
09:23 PM Tom_L: i bet
09:23 PM rue_shop4: i looked over them, it looks good
09:24 PM rue_shop4: I need to work on a steam engine
09:24 PM rue_shop4: and a steam boiler
09:24 PM Tom_L: for?
09:26 PM rue_shop4: power in 2025
09:26 PM rue_shop4: maybe in 2024
09:29 PM Tom_L: not solar or wind?
09:29 PM Tom_L: we get plenty of wind here
09:31 PM rue_shop4: without storage, that only gets you so far
09:31 PM rue_mohr: besides, technically steam is solar
09:32 PM Tom_L: what happened with that water solar thing you did?
09:32 PM Tom_L: iirc it was water
09:32 PM rue_mohr: I did some solar water heaters, but there were issues
