#garfield Calendar
04:56 AM Tom_L: morning
08:48 AM rue_mohr: what I'm doing now isn't working for work
08:48 AM rue_mohr: sleep wise
08:48 AM rue_mohr: I got some great css written tho
09:22 AM Tom_L: heh
11:06 AM polprog: I got some more smartcard junk
11:06 AM polprog: Inlcluding a reader from some Philips device which has more than 8 pins
11:06 AM polprog: I need to find if any cards used that
02:30 PM Tom_L: Expected delivery: Thursday, Mar. 24
02:31 PM Tom_L: 11:35 am
02:31 PM Tom_L: Item was released by Customs and is now with Canada Post for processing
04:01 PM WormFood: I had customs hold my passport once, and by the time they released it (over a month later), I had overstayed my visa. That was an interesting experience.
04:04 PM WormFood: I had to get an "exit visa" in my new passport, to leave the country, but I didn't get in trouble. I had notified the entry/exit bureau long before it became an issue. If anyone is interested, I can tell you the rest of the story. It is rather interesting. My passport had been sent to usa, by my consulate, to be destroyed.
06:19 PM rue_mohr: uh
06:20 PM rue_mohr: how do you get into so much trouble?
06:21 PM rue_mohr: I should remove the rabbits from my keyboard, its getting hard to type
10:09 PM WormFood: rue_mohr, it was just luck...or lack of it. I didn't do anything wrong.
10:11 PM WormFood: I go to the consulate to get a new passport, because my old passport has no blank pages left in it. But instead of giving me a new passport, they take my old passport, and give me nothing. They ask me to go back a few weeks later, and inform me, that I am not eligible for passport services, because there is an outstanding felony warrant for my arrest in usa.
10:12 PM rue_mohr: "can I borrow that gun you have so I can shoot you to get my passport back?"
10:12 PM WormFood: Which, at the time they told me that, was not true. But anyways, they get their mistake cleared up, and issue me a new passport. In the meantime, they told me, my old passport wasn't just canceled, it was revoked, which means they sent it back to usa to be destroyed.
10:13 PM rue_mohr: why are border people such assholes?
10:13 PM WormFood: I actually contacted the state department directly, because this was just too fucked up. That passport has my visa in it, and I can't leave without that passport, or at least an exit visa.
10:14 PM rue_mohr: so they asked to see it and just took it?
10:14 PM WormFood: *eventually*, they decide to send my old passport back to me. But my new passport, is held up in customs. They asked how I wanted it shipped, in the monthly diplomatic pouch, or via regular delivery (ups). I said send it whichever way gets it to me fastest....so they sent it with ups
10:15 PM WormFood: You have to give them your passport to do anything there.
10:15 PM WormFood: If your passport is revoked, then they'll only give you a passport, which is only good for return to usa.
10:16 PM WormFood: I know someone who had that happen to them. They were fucked. They couldn't fix it. Fortunately I was able to fix my problem, because it was a mistake. There *was* a felony warrant for my arrest in usa, but it was bogus, and I was able to easily clear up that mistake with a single phone call (well, I made many phone calls, but once I got the right person, it only took 1 call)
10:17 PM rue_mohr: I'v heard about only giving out a copy of your passport
10:18 PM WormFood: and my exit visa says "humanatarian" on it. When I go to leave China, the customs guy asks if that is "red cross", and I said "something like that"
10:18 PM WormFood: What I do, is print a business card sized copy of my passport page, and on the back, I put a copy of my visa
10:19 PM WormFood: I use that everywhere, and never had anyone reject it, but of course I use my real passport for official things, like dealing with the bank, but for getting a bus or train ticket, I just use my copy.
10:19 PM rue_mohr: hmmm there is css wordage for "these next x items go in a horizontal row"
10:20 PM WormFood: my css skills are really poor
10:20 PM rue_mohr: back in 2000 css sounded lame, it took over everything since
10:20 PM WormFood: rue_mohr, did you update your copy of avrbaudcalc to the newest?
10:20 PM WormFood: css is just crazy complex, but I've seen people do some truly amazing things with it.
10:21 PM rue_mohr: yes, I think you got me the latest update
10:21 PM WormFood: did you put it online, in place of the old one?
10:21 PM WormFood: last I looked, you hadn't, but I didn't check just now.
10:21 PM rue_mohr: its just tucked away while your still alive
10:21 PM rue_mohr: I changed my page to a forwarder to yours
10:22 PM WormFood: I see that. Please delete the old one, and replace it. The one you have has bugs (nothing critical)
10:23 PM rue_mohr: I only have 2.0.0 here
10:23 PM WormFood: What I'd prefer for you to do, is to simply say something like you're an official mirror, and link people to my page, but also make your copy available too.
10:23 PM WormFood: yeah, I think it's 2.0.1 or 2.0.2 right now.
10:24 PM rue_mohr: oh?
10:24 PM WormFood: That way, if there is a problem with my server, people can use your copy.
10:24 PM rue_mohr: hmm, did I file it somewhere stupid?
10:24 PM WormFood: ~ircjunk/avr/baudcalc/avrbaudcalc-1.0.8.php
10:24 PM rue_mohr: oh what
10:25 PM rue_mohr: oh look tho, its just a redirect
10:25 PM WormFood: right
10:25 PM rue_mohr: I did that so that it would still work with old web links
10:25 PM WormFood: but you have the new one in a different location, right?
10:25 PM rue_mohr: yea
10:26 PM rue_mohr: that file on my server is *just* a redirect
10:26 PM WormFood: right. I understand.
10:26 PM rue_mohr: like I say, same name for link compatability
10:26 PM rue_mohr: if I were posting the new version, I'd make it a symlink to the new one
10:26 PM rue_mohr: but
10:26 PM rue_mohr: just a sec now
10:27 PM WormFood: if I make another page for you to replace that with, would you use it?
10:27 PM rue_mohr: I have two file servers, just a sec
10:27 PM rue_mohr: I could, what do you need different tho?
10:28 PM rue_mohr: where is...
10:28 PM rue_mohr: maybe I only have 2.0.0, but you updated me a few times...
10:28 PM WormFood: I'd just say that the page is there to make links not die, and link to your current mirror, and my original
10:29 PM rue_mohr: hah, shall I just vi in some new text
10:29 PM rue_mohr: ?
10:29 PM rue_mohr: where are the other versions
10:29 PM rue_mohr: I think I only have 2.0.0
10:29 PM * rue_mohr scratches head
10:29 PM WormFood: hold on, and I'll give you the new one
10:30 PM rue_mohr: well thats odd
10:31 PM rue_mohr: you had to netcat it to me
10:32 PM rue_mohr: ok, well, it wouldn't be the first time, I thought I had the current version when you dissapeared and I had to post that
10:32 PM rue_mohr: little bit of history repeating
10:33 PM WormFood: rue_mohr, dcc ok to send to you?
10:33 PM rue_mohr: yes
10:33 PM rue_mohr: if my system automatically plays your file as a mp3 I'll jump
10:34 PM WormFood: let me know if it gives your any trouble
10:34 PM rue_mohr: Received a malformed DCC request from WormFood.
10:34 PM WormFood: hhhmmm
10:34 PM rue_mohr: php? what i have here is html and js
10:34 PM WormFood: do like what we did before. Netcat and tar
10:34 PM WormFood: that isn't mine
10:34 PM rue_mohr: /files/backup/wormfood-baud/WormFood's AVR Baud Rate Calculator Ver. 2.0.0.html
10:35 PM rue_mohr: hu?
10:35 PM WormFood: There is no js on my page, that I can remember
10:35 PM rue_mohr: files/backup/wormfood-baud/WormFood's AVR Baud Rate Calculator Ver. 2.0.0_files/wayback-toolbar-logo.png
10:35 PM WormFood: hahaha
10:35 PM rue_mohr: heh
10:35 PM rue_mohr: so where are any of your backups
10:36 PM WormFood: dunno
10:36 PM rue_mohr: ok yea, this is a derailed train headed for a natural gas plant
10:36 PM WormFood: This is easy enough to solve.
10:36 PM rue_mohr: ok, so
10:37 PM rue_mohr: right, we just need to transfer a file
10:37 PM rue_mohr: how hard could that be?
10:37 PM WormFood: we can do a flying tarball ;) On your machine, do a "nc -l -p 1234 -q 1 | tar xvJ", and give me your ip (and port # if you change it), and I'll throw it at ya
10:37 PM rue_mohr: router
10:38 PM WormFood: That is literally the quickest and easiest ad-hoc file transfer.
10:38 PM rue_mohr: let me think a ser
10:38 PM WormFood: no problem. hang on.
10:38 PM rue_mohr: oh FASDFJSDF
10:38 PM rue_mohr: the ssh on my router is too old to just ssh into
10:38 PM rue_mohr: I have to...
10:39 PM rue_mohr: ssh -oKexAlgorithms=+diffie-hellman-group1-sha1 dingdong
10:39 PM rue_mohr: stupid god damn
10:39 PM rue_mohr: just a sec, I'll start the listen
10:40 PM WormFood: wait
10:40 PM WormFood: I'll give you a url
10:40 PM WormFood: it's secure enough for a one-off transfer like this.
10:41 PM WormFood: check your /msg for the url
10:42 PM WormFood: Please pick a spot for that to live (just as avrbaudcalc.php), and I'll make a link to you as my mirror.
10:45 PM rue_mohr: I have it in my backups for people
10:46 PM rue_mohr: so, how do I get these divs in a horizontal row then...
10:48 PM WormFood: no clue
10:49 PM rue_mohr: its ok, I'm working on a wiegand access system while I work out what to work on
10:49 PM WormFood: http://csszengarden.com/ <-- ever seen this site before?
10:50 PM rue_mohr: I think so
10:50 PM WormFood: http://csszengarden.com/219/ <-- this is an old one. I saw it years ago, but also one of my favorites.
10:51 PM WormFood: I think you know, but I'll say it in case you don't, or someone else looking at it.....the html is the same on *every page* there, but they change the CSS, to do different page layouts. If you have made some css for that site, you can send it to them, and if they like it, they'll include it too.
10:52 PM rue_mohr: yep
10:53 PM rue_mohr: such was the sales pitch back in 2000
10:53 PM WormFood: they give you the css, and all the resources. So, if you see something you like, they make it easy to get to where it is done.
10:53 PM WormFood: I like it, because I can learn some new and interesting things there.
10:54 PM WormFood: CSS just overloads and melts my brain. I'm sure once I figure out the one or two key concepts I'm missing, it will fall into place, but for right now, css is still fuckin' hard to understand
10:56 PM rue_mohr: I'm lumbering thru it, bull in china shop style
10:57 PM rue_mohr: I wonder if I can have multiple classes on a div
10:57 PM rue_mohr: oh I can, you use a space
10:59 PM rue_mohr: I just wish there were a real gui editor like kompozer
11:00 PM rue_mohr: ok, that kinda worked
11:08 PM rue_mohr: https://cssgrid-generator.netlify.app/
11:08 PM rue_mohr: :)
11:10 PM WormFood: built with what? a taco?
11:10 PM rue_mohr: I dunno
11:10 PM rue_mohr: works nice tho
11:10 PM WormFood: I don't understand what it's used for.
11:10 PM WormFood: I haven't gotten that far in CSS yet.
11:10 PM rue_mohr: building CSS grids
11:10 PM rue_mohr: its what replaced tables
11:10 PM rue_mohr: and frames
11:10 PM rue_mohr: (ugh)
11:11 PM WormFood: They most advanced thing I did, was make my tables on my bit rate calculator wrap to fill up the space on the screen, so it looks decent on a phone, or desktop
11:11 PM rue_mohr: :)
11:11 PM WormFood: so, I should change the tables in my bit rate calculator, to use css frames? ;)
11:12 PM rue_mohr: look at me, I'm learning the new way of things that will be obsoleted tommorow so I can learn soemthing new!
11:12 PM WormFood: actually, I think css is here to stay
11:12 PM rue_mohr: I would say its too deep and to stick with what you have
11:12 PM WormFood: properly done, css is akin to magic
11:12 PM rue_mohr: I'm sure something new will come along soon, its been like 22 years
11:13 PM WormFood: and the same thing could have been said of semiconductors some 70 years ago
11:13 PM rue_mohr: thats right tho, its a fad
11:13 PM WormFood: indeed
11:13 PM rue_mohr: everywhere you go now, people done have them anymore
11:13 PM rue_mohr: ask digikey
11:13 PM WormFood: it never completely replaced vacuum tubes
11:13 PM WormFood: what about jameco?
11:13 PM rue_mohr: nope
11:13 PM rue_mohr: its all going away
11:13 PM WormFood: are they even still around?
11:14 PM rue_mohr: yes, they send me desperite spam often
11:14 PM rue_mohr: I feel sad when I see it
11:14 PM WormFood: I found some of my old electronics catalogs from places like digikey and jameco, from back in the 80s and 90s
11:14 PM rue_mohr: omg that ~2000 digikey catalog was INSANE
11:14 PM rue_mohr: I swear the last one I ever got was 2 volumes
11:15 PM rue_mohr: neither of which properly fit in the mailbox
11:15 PM WormFood: the '87 radio shack catalog was the best catalog ever
11:15 PM rue_mohr: that must have been before they stopped selling all the stuff in it
11:15 PM rue_mohr: I tried to get a speech recg chip when I was... 13? but they couldn't get it
11:16 PM rue_mohr: I swear I prepaid for it too
11:16 PM rue_mohr: but I wasn't sure by the time they got back about it, so, I didn't chase it
11:16 PM rue_mohr: I remember the store in the neighbouring town had a static ram chip I was excited about
11:16 PM WormFood: One day, I'm in RS with a friend. I'm picking up some electronics parts for a few bucks, and the sales droid says "Can I interest you in a *free* cell phone", and I said "if it's truly free, the just drop it in my bah, and say no more", and he says "blah blah blah 2 year contract". I said "committing to a 2 year contract is hardly free", and walked away, while my friend tried to argue with him about how
11:16 PM WormFood: it's not free.
11:17 PM rue_mohr: the stores were required to take on certian stock when they opened, but they would never restock any of it
11:17 PM WormFood: Ah. That's odd. If it's selling, then they should restock it.
11:18 PM rue_mohr: I grew up watching the local store mummify
11:18 PM Tom_L: then they turned into cell phone / arduino stores and closed shortly thereafter
11:18 PM WormFood: I used to have a tandy color computer, back in the day (a shitty video chip, but an awesome motorola 6809 cpu). When I'd visit my mom, I'd go to the RS within walking distance, and use their high speed dubbing machines, to copy games on cassettes to blank tapes, then buy those "blank" tapes.
11:19 PM rue_mohr: :)
11:19 PM rue_mohr: I remember buying tapes
11:19 PM rue_mohr: then I realized that at garage sales there were LOTS of chomeium tapes with junk on them I could just record over
11:20 PM rue_mohr: CRII :)
11:20 PM WormFood: one day, the sales droid it watching me close, because he knows I'm up to something, but he don't know what. So, I take my tape of games, and stick it at the back of the stack, upside down, and I take a truly blank tape to the counter to buy. He grabs a tape player, and plugs in the tape and plays it...FF, play...nothing...flip it over, play...nothing...he was soooo pissed.
11:20 PM rue_mohr: hehe
11:20 PM WormFood: then I came back later that day, and walked in, grabbed my "blank" tape, and buy it and leave ;) $100 worth of games, for the cost of a blank tape
11:21 PM rue_mohr: :)
11:21 PM WormFood: er, 2 blank tapes
11:21 PM rue_mohr: they didn't wrap them eh?
11:21 PM rue_mohr: all the ones at the store I was at had a thin plstic wrapper on them
11:21 PM WormFood: I figured, if I did nothing, he'd come over to investigate, after I left, so I bought something.
11:21 PM WormFood: these were zip-loc type sealed
11:21 PM rue_mohr: huh
11:22 PM WormFood: not shrink wrapped, like the cartridge games, or floppy disk games
11:22 PM WormFood: I guess the only reason they used tape is for cost. Cheaper than a cart
11:23 PM WormFood: Also, on at least one tape, they used the ability to stop/start the tape, to play an audio track, to match the video on the screen.
11:23 PM WormFood: I never got a copy of that one. It was something like donald duck
11:24 PM WormFood: I was on very good terms with the manager at my store, and I got a lot of perks from RS. (the tape copy game was at a remote store, near my mom's house...I'd go to visit on holidays, and during the summer)
11:25 PM WormFood: He was smart. I brought back a butane solder iron, that had broken it's tip. He refunded my money, and gave me the broken iron. What'd I do? I turned around, and bought a new tip for it. He turned that loss into a sale.
11:26 PM WormFood: and he fuckin' tricked me into buying stuff I couldn't afford, by dropping the price until I couldn't say "no". ;)
11:26 PM WormFood: I mean, on stuff like closeout things.
11:29 PM WormFood: rue_mohr, on this page http://csszengarden.com/219/ try changing the width of your browser, to see it change into a medium sized and small sized screen. I suggest you do that on anything there, that looks interesting.
11:31 PM WormFood: meh! You probably already know that.
11:34 PM rue_mohr: no, I'm sitting here thrilled I made a CSS row
11:35 PM Tom_L: i've forgotten anything i knew about css
11:35 PM rue_mohr: if I were guru I could mix css, svg and javascript all into something homogenious
11:36 PM Tom_L: i used it on my page but that was a long time ago
11:41 PM Tom_L: i had a 'feedback' js on mine for a while but it's gone now
11:49 PM rue_mohr: yea
11:49 PM rue_mohr: they pay people to spam them
11:49 PM rue_mohr: so you can just bot it out anymore
11:49 PM rue_mohr: my hss arrived
11:50 PM rue_mohr: just need to log it in and I'll show ya what Ig ot
11:50 PM Tom_L: for?
11:50 PM rue_mohr: lathe
11:50 PM Tom_L: cutters?
11:50 PM rue_mohr: I dont know if I'll be able to get any tool metal by the end of the year
11:50 PM Tom_L: i can get the blanks if you need some
11:51 PM Tom_L: i got a pile of small ones for my lathe
11:51 PM rue_mohr: I got some
11:51 PM rue_mohr: hold up
11:51 PM Tom_L: i use some for parallels on the mill sometimes
11:51 PM Tom_L: don't use them that much
11:52 PM Tom_L: don't use the lathe that much
11:52 PM Tom_L: got a thin cutoff blade for it
11:52 PM Tom_L: and a thicker one iirc
11:54 PM rue_mohr: none of the shipping numebrs line up after aliexpress changed their site
11:54 PM rue_mohr: I think they ****ed the database
11:54 PM Tom_L: huh
11:55 PM rue_mohr: makes it hard to check stuff off
11:55 PM Tom_L: i was gonna get some more carbide cutters
11:56 PM Tom_L: i have spares but you never know
11:57 PM rue_mohr: and they hid the feedback
11:57 PM rue_mohr: button
