08:39 AM rue_mohr: morning
10:23 PM Tom_L: mount them in a dovetail holder and just keep grinding the end off and moving it forward
10:24 PM Tom_L: no out of stock detection. that was up to the user
10:24 PM Tom_L: well i think some of the newer ones may have
10:30 PM rue_mohr: :)
10:30 PM rue_mohr: not checking the machines right and their cycling away on nothing?
10:31 PM rue_mohr: sounds like there is going to another fake run on everything from the stores
10:32 PM rue_mohr: ok I need to make some pullies
10:32 PM rue_mohr: hah "need"
10:33 PM Tom_L: what size?
10:34 PM Tom_L: you'd almost need a form tool or an endmill shaped to fit the groove
10:34 PM rue_mohr: 4cm and 3cm
10:34 PM rue_mohr: I made up a V bit for plastic
10:35 PM rue_mohr: but I think I dropped it
10:35 PM Tom_L: i thought you had a box full of pulleys
10:35 PM rue_mohr: it was just normal steel
10:35 PM Tom_L: maybe that was gears...
10:35 PM rue_mohr: probably, these are a bit specific
10:35 PM rue_mohr: and I might try to do a small run
10:35 PM rue_mohr: I have another money making idea for something I'll never get to selling
10:36 PM rue_mohr: the idea is to make some small bot platforms to sell online for christmas
10:36 PM rue_mohr: you know small dome cameras?
10:36 PM rue_mohr: thats the inspiration
10:37 PM rue_mohr: a whole lot of ideas came togethor on it
10:37 PM rue_mohr: so, the 8051 basic
10:37 PM rue_mohr: combine with a esp8266 doing a web serial terminal to it
10:37 PM Tom_L: you should be thinking of christmas in july...
10:38 PM rue_mohr: what I need to do it hire a sales manager
10:38 PM Tom_L: no
10:38 PM rue_mohr: I NEVER end up listing the stuff I make to sell
10:38 PM Tom_L: that's an expense
10:38 PM rue_mohr: i have a huge freaking pile of it
10:38 PM rue_mohr: I never got good at selling things
10:39 PM rue_mohr: if I'm going to live 10000 years, maybe I should work on that
10:39 PM Tom_L: those ideas will be obsolete by then
10:39 PM rue_mohr: selling stuff?
10:39 PM Tom_L: you will need newer ones
10:40 PM Tom_L: and who would you sell to?
10:40 PM rue_mohr: the point isn't really even the money from selling the robot
10:40 PM rue_mohr: the idea is to get things to people who are interested
10:40 PM Tom_L: it's an adventure
10:40 PM rue_mohr: oh, ok 10k?
10:40 PM rue_mohr: it doesn't matter, aliens, whatever
10:41 PM rue_mohr: selling doesn't have to be about money, its about squiring someones investment, be it dollars or just trust
10:41 PM Tom_L: you will be buying from then
10:41 PM Tom_L: them
10:41 PM rue_mohr: acquiring
10:41 PM rue_mohr: good trade goes both ways
10:41 PM rue_mohr: the only way I'm making money right now is labout
10:42 PM rue_mohr: and thats not efficient
10:42 PM rue_mohr: I'm kinda dissapointed that I have all this stuff sitting idle
10:42 PM rue_mohr: I should be able to make some income off it doing something
10:42 PM Tom_L: the mill is idle
10:42 PM rue_mohr: yup
10:43 PM Tom_L: i squared up some sewer pipe with it...
10:43 PM rue_mohr: some people would have made $140k from it so far
10:43 PM rue_mohr: I have no idea how
10:43 PM rue_mohr: hah :)
10:43 PM Tom_L: abs cuts pretty easy
10:43 PM rue_mohr: if it stays cool it chips nice
10:44 PM rue_mohr: I dont know if I have any material for making these pullies
10:44 PM rue_mohr: and I'm running out of steam
10:44 PM Tom_L: steel?
10:44 PM rue_mohr: no platic of some kind
10:44 PM Tom_L: oh
10:45 PM Tom_L: what runs in the groove?
10:45 PM rue_mohr: reduction pullies for small dc motors
10:45 PM Tom_L: pink string?
10:45 PM rue_mohr: probably use thin automotive gaskets
10:45 PM Tom_L: had to mention that...
10:45 PM rue_mohr: oh wow
10:45 PM rue_mohr: that goes way back
10:45 PM rue_mohr: wow she got mad :(
10:45 PM Tom_L: hahaha
10:45 PM rue_mohr: there wasn't even a critisizm in it
10:45 PM rue_mohr: she just blew up
10:46 PM rue_mohr: I suppose she was probably about to, it just happned to be the thing
10:46 PM Tom_L: attention getter that way
10:46 PM rue_mohr: I think just crazy mood swings
10:46 PM rue_mohr: man she could shape metal
10:46 PM Tom_L: yeah
10:47 PM rue_mohr: I still want to be able to do things on the scale she did
10:47 PM rue_mohr: I'm having major motivation issies
10:47 PM rue_mohr: I have that 12' mecha
10:47 PM rue_mohr: the rings been sitting for like 2 years now
10:47 PM Tom_L: the big one is about 1.5"
10:48 PM Tom_L: i don't have any plastic that big
10:48 PM rue_mohr: big which?
10:48 PM Tom_L: that i know of
10:48 PM rue_mohr: oh
10:48 PM Tom_L: alum maybe
10:48 PM rue_mohr: I have some thick sheet
10:48 PM rue_mohr: but the pin is only 1/8" so I cant just chuck it in the lathe
10:49 PM rue_mohr: I could pressure plate it with the tailstock, but its not aligned right
10:49 PM rue_mohr: the tailstock is high
10:49 PM rue_mohr: so, its not even easy to fit
10:49 PM rue_mohr: fiz
10:50 PM rue_mohr: I cant print pullies, the overhang doesn't work ;)
10:50 PM Tom_L: even if you stood them up?
10:50 PM rue_mohr: nope
10:50 PM rue_mohr: (tried it)
10:50 PM Tom_L: that probably would be worse
10:51 PM Tom_L: mold them
10:51 PM rue_mohr: heh, funny split
10:51 PM Tom_L: 2 identical halves
10:51 PM rue_mohr: I can do them on the lathe
10:51 PM rue_mohr: 6mm material
10:52 PM rue_mohr: HDPE in fun on the lathe
10:52 PM rue_mohr: you get it right and the curls go flying over your right ear
10:52 PM Tom_L: now i can't even go rummage thru the plastic store's cutoffs
10:52 PM Tom_L: covid n all
10:52 PM rue_mohr: :(
10:52 PM Tom_L: they don't want ppl back there now
10:53 PM Tom_L: i used to go in and find what i wanted and then some
10:53 PM Tom_L: i did get a sheet a while back though
10:53 PM rue_mohr: do you want drawings of the pullies to play with?
10:53 PM Tom_L: for making chip guards on the mill
10:53 PM Tom_L: not tonight
10:53 PM Tom_L: but i'd look at it
10:53 PM rue_mohr: hey,
10:54 PM rue_mohr: I never tried printing half-pullies
10:54 PM Tom_L: then glue
10:54 PM rue_mohr: or something
10:54 PM Tom_L: locating pin and glue
10:54 PM rue_mohr: no, this takes 4 seconds on the lathe
10:54 PM rue_mohr: ugh
10:54 PM rue_mohr: I'm just stuck in my chair
10:54 PM Tom_L: 1/8" shaft?
10:54 PM rue_mohr: that was the last of the mug of tea tho
10:55 PM rue_mohr: yes
10:55 PM rue_mohr: 3.125mm
10:55 PM rue_mohr: its a reduction pulley
10:55 PM Tom_L: washer on each side of a bolt to hold it in the lathe
10:55 PM rue_mohr: and the other is a wheel
10:55 PM Tom_L: tighten with a nut
10:56 PM rue_mohr: 1/8" is a bit dodgy tho
10:56 PM rue_mohr: my old trick was to make it larger and then make an insert
10:56 PM Tom_L: iirc i've done round with no holes
10:56 PM rue_mohr: yep
10:57 PM rue_mohr: pressure plat
10:57 PM rue_mohr: e
10:57 PM rue_mohr: but the tailstock isn't centered
10:57 PM WormFood: 大家好 ;)
10:57 PM rue_mohr: I have to shim the head of the lathe up like 0.05"
10:57 PM rue_mohr: WormFood, yes, chineese lathe
10:57 PM rue_mohr: WormFood, how you doin?
10:57 PM WormFood: I said "hi everyone". I can type Chinese again.
10:58 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/temp/skimmer/skimmer.jpg
10:58 PM rue_mohr: do you type chineese on an english keyboard, but kinda phonetically, and it spits out the character when you get enough typed?
10:59 PM WormFood: I have a new AVR project to work on. 2-way wireless modules, and pwm output at 10 volts. Normal stuff. Nothing too fancy.
10:59 PM Tom_L: rue_mohr, that was another money maker
10:59 PM WormFood: I type using pinyin, because I don't know "wubi"
10:59 PM WormFood: for what I typed, I just had to type "djh2"
10:59 PM WormFood: crazy, huh?
10:59 PM rue_mohr: hmm
10:59 PM rue_mohr: do it does work like that?
11:00 PM rue_mohr: is aliexpress pretty inflated prices?
11:00 PM rue_mohr: Tom_L, I cant tell what that is...
11:00 PM WormFood: that is the abbreviation for "da jia hao", which is common enough, that it will know "djh" is the same thing....but, there are other patterns, that could have a different meaning, for the letters "djh", so I had to hit "2", to select the right combination of characters.
11:00 PM Tom_L: protein skimmer for a saltwater fishtank
11:01 PM rue_mohr: hmm
11:01 PM WormFood: it's actually quite easy, when you learn how to type it.
11:01 PM rue_mohr: uhu
11:01 PM WormFood: and on my phone...I can type in a method (that I do use), that uses only 5 keys to type any chinese characters.
11:01 PM rue_mohr: Tom_L, are the holes in the base for air?
11:02 PM Tom_L: i don't even remember now :)
11:02 PM Tom_L: water circulation i think
11:02 PM rue_mohr: huh
11:02 PM Tom_L: the air came in the top
11:02 PM rue_mohr: it looks like some kinda rolling ... thing ;)
11:02 PM rue_mohr: I need food, and I have no interest in eating
11:03 PM Tom_L: more surface area works better
11:03 PM WormFood: have any of you guys got experience with the nrf24 family of wireless modules?
11:03 PM Tom_L: like 3" clear tube
11:03 PM Tom_L: maybe 4 i forget
11:03 PM rue_mohr: WormFood, the plain OOM ones?
11:04 PM rue_mohr: the transmitter is an oscillator with an on/off control?
11:04 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/old_misc_files/Linx_tx.jpg
11:04 PM Tom_L: just those and i never really used them
11:04 PM WormFood: I'm not sure what I have coming to me. I believe it's the "01+". I'm not sure if that is manufacturer id
11:04 PM rue_mohr: but the nrf24 isn't a wifi...
11:05 PM WormFood: The transmitter is a system on a chip. It handles all the dirty details, and will resend a packet if the receiver doesn't get it.
11:05 PM rue_mohr: oh like the esp8266 / esp32
11:05 PM WormFood: No, I don't believe it is wifi, but it works on those frequencies.
11:05 PM rue_mohr: hm
11:05 PM WormFood: These modules I have coming are dirt cheap (I didn't buy them)
11:05 PM Tom_L: carry on. i'm goin to bed
11:05 PM rue_mohr: gnight
11:05 PM WormFood: good night Tom_L
11:06 PM rue_mohr: what am I gonna have for supper
11:06 PM rue_mohr: and who do I make myself into for the next 8k years?
11:06 PM rue_mohr: the first step feels like it'll be the hardest, but somehow, I suspect they will all be hard
11:07 PM rue_mohr: got to work on it cause times running out and I'm getting nowehre
11:07 PM rue_mohr: build a flying machine before this car goes over the cliff
11:07 PM rue_mohr: ""
11:07 PM rue_mohr: **** only 100 miles left
11:08 PM rue_mohr: whats the lift like for *this* type of wing?
11:08 PM rue_mohr: oh I wonder
11:08 PM rue_mohr: when I went out to my shop I heard a bird fly off
11:09 PM rue_mohr: but
11:09 PM rue_mohr: that doesn't make sense
11:09 PM rue_mohr: they cant see
11:09 PM rue_mohr: however a bat would make sense, it could see, and it might have been hanging out by the outdoor light catching bugs
11:10 PM WormFood: rue_mohr, I have an old computer here, with a PATA port, and no parallel printer port....I thought about using your hack, to turn it into a printer port, but I think it will be a pain in the ass to make windows use it that way. (I don't use Windows, except to run specific software, and that is this instance.)
11:10 PM rue_mohr: depends if your good at hacking ini files
11:10 PM rue_mohr: I'm not
11:10 PM rue_mohr: there are 8 ports on the pata,
11:11 PM rue_mohr: parallel port is only 3
11:11 PM WormFood: I suspect it can be done, it's just....ugh....I hate windows. I don't want to invest the time into it....even tho, I suspect it could be super simple and easy
11:12 PM rue_mohr: well yea
11:13 PM rue_mohr: did you need it for a printer or io control?
11:13 PM WormFood: I remember back in the bad old days, I'd put an extra ide controller in my computer, and wire it up to some alternate address that the bios does not recognize, but I didn't care, because Windows 95 saw it.
11:14 PM WormFood: IF I did it (and I seriously doubt I will), would be to control a jtag port on a specific piece of hardware
11:14 PM rue_mohr: oh so an 8255 would work
11:15 PM WormFood: Back in my satellite hacking days, I used to use windoze-only software to reprogram the satellite receivers, if I needed/wanted to. I actually changed the receiver and "boxkey" in the receivers quite frequently
11:16 PM WormFood: er...I mean, I changed the serial number, and boxkey*
11:18 PM rue_mohr: I should go take my cnc parts and put them beside the lathe so I get that done
11:18 PM WormFood: out of sight-out of mind, so put it where you can see it to remind you.
11:18 PM rue_mohr: damnit
11:19 PM rue_mohr: what dont I want to not eat
11:27 PM WormFood: I had elk burgers yesterday. They were quite good.
11:33 PM rue_mohr: would the elk agree?
