12:00 AM Tom_L: hard to see but there isn't much space between those headers
12:07 AM rue_shop3: i know
12:07 AM Tom_L: the board might bump into the next one
12:07 AM rue_shop3: the fan clearance is the issue
12:07 AM rue_shop3: the board will stand out off the socket
12:07 AM rue_shop3: plugs right in
12:07 AM Tom_L: vertical instead of horizontal?
12:07 AM Tom_L: you soldering the board between the pins?
12:07 AM Tom_L: instead of thru hole
12:07 AM rue_shop3: yes
12:07 AM Tom_L: also, i hope those wires are long enough to do that
12:07 AM Tom_L: where the colored wires go to the ribbon
12:07 AM rue_shop3: mayeb i should send it with pin headers and a scsi cable
12:07 AM rue_shop3: :)
12:07 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Control2.jpg
12:07 AM Tom_L: i'm ok with that
12:07 AM rue_shop3: would.... 15" reach across everyone?
12:07 AM Tom_L: oh hell yes
12:07 AM rue_shop3: hmm
12:58 AM rue_shop3: <rue_mohr> even pins are grounded
04:10 AM rue_shop2: I need to work out a better way of stripping one side off all the 2 side cald I have
04:10 AM rue_shop2: these peices I'm trying to do just dont want to go
02:22 PM aandrew: Tom_L: those are some big linear power supplies along the bottom of control2.jpg
02:22 PM aandrew: is that your CNC's control box?
02:25 PM Tom_L: yes
02:25 PM Tom_L: i got those surplus and wired them parallel
02:25 PM Tom_L: i'm sure i don't need them all but meh
02:25 PM Tom_L: 18A
02:25 PM aandrew: that black double-sided adhesive foam - it holds up well? I'd be scared of the adhesive letting go
02:25 PM aandrew: I'm a big fan of reuse, and chunky transformers too
02:27 PM Tom_L: it's automotive trim adhesive so yes
02:27 PM Tom_L: it doesn't let go
02:27 PM aandrew: aha, nice
02:27 PM aandrew: what's the temp like inside that enclosure when it's closed and running for hours?
02:28 PM Tom_L: not the cheap double back tape
02:28 PM Tom_L: cool
02:28 PM Tom_L: it barely gets warm
02:28 PM Tom_L: it vents from the bottom out the top fan
02:28 PM aandrew: gotcha
02:28 PM Tom_L: fan pulls the air right across the heatsink in the door when it's closed
02:36 PM aandrew: *nods*
02:36 PM aandrew: reminds me I gotta cut that lexan I bought to close the area around my 3d printer so I can run the tiny little dehumidifier to try to keep it dry
02:37 PM aandrew: I put my filament in sealed containers with a hole and 8mm push fit tube connector so it sits in a bed of dessicant but it still sucks in moisture a bit
02:38 PM aandrew: so if I enclose the entire printer/filament area and run the dehumifier in it I should be able to keep it pretty dry (<20% ideally)
02:38 PM aandrew: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07PHSCDFS is the one I got, it's not a bad little thing
02:52 PM aandrew: no compressor, it's just a peltier unit with a fan really. useless for any kind of room but great for a small enclosed area
03:09 PM polprog: good evening guys
03:10 PM rue_mohr: hey
03:11 PM rue_mohr: so the cupric chloride worked kinda ok for etching last night
03:11 PM rue_mohr: a trace-etch wouldn't have worked
03:11 PM rue_mohr: seems my mix is mostly water
03:12 PM Tom_L: how are you set for pcb?
03:13 PM rue_mohr: clad?
03:13 PM Tom_L: yeah
03:13 PM rue_mohr: I couldn't peel one side off the clad peices I had
03:13 PM rue_mohr: so I had to etch one side off
03:13 PM rue_mohr: used old etchant and the cupric chloride
03:13 PM rue_mohr: so I still ahve some good etchant for doing a board itself
03:14 PM Tom_L: you got plenty of clad though?
03:15 PM Tom_L: i know a guy...
04:14 PM rue_mohr: I could use more
04:14 PM rue_mohr: you cant get it ya know
04:15 PM rue_mohr: $38 CAD for a square foot too
04:16 PM rue_mohr: https://www.amazon.ca/MG-Chemicals-Prototyping-1-Ounce-16-Inch/dp/B008OAFNWS
04:16 PM rue_mohr: 1oz!
04:16 PM rue_mohr: ugh
04:17 PM rue_mohr: why am I sure most of what I have left is higher
04:36 PM aandrew: hm, 12x12" is $26 at sayal.com. not sure if they're out in BC
04:37 PM aandrew: nope, southwestern ontario only
04:37 PM rue_mohr: I'm sure supply is drying up
05:15 PM polprog: powerbook hard disk works, it boots to OS
05:15 PM polprog: but the trackball does not move the mouse
05:15 PM polprog: i think the trackball is ded
05:19 PM Tom_L: pull the ball and clean the fuzz out
05:20 PM aandrew: I have to d that to my bellybutton occasionally
05:22 PM Tom_L: you keep your ball in your belly button?
05:22 PM aandrew: lol
05:22 PM * Tom_L really doesn't wanna know
05:50 PM rue_shop3: Tom_L,
05:50 PM rue_shop3: so I landed on a wide design for the pcb
05:51 PM rue_shop3: its 5.5" x 1.5"
05:51 PM rue_shop3: breaks out into one strip of lugs
05:51 PM rue_shop3: 4 opto outputs, sourcing
05:59 PM Tom_L: pic?
05:59 PM Tom_L: great
06:00 PM Tom_L: and even if the inputs aren't protected they could just pass right thru on the copper and i'd be ok with that
06:00 PM Tom_L: just hope it's not too wide for the cabinet
06:01 PM Tom_L: 5" might be pushing that limit
06:10 PM Tom_L: also something we didn't consider is those plugs have side locks on them
06:22 PM rue_shop3: I have that scsi cable for you to go with it
06:23 PM rue_shop3: the accesability of the terminals gets awefull when its laid out in 2 rows
06:25 PM Tom_L: i can go measure
06:27 PM rue_shop3: 1.5x5.5
06:27 PM rue_shop3: see how it looks
06:28 PM Tom_L: one sec
06:29 PM Tom_L: might be too wide
06:32 PM rue_shop3: tall
06:33 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/7I90_space1.jpg
06:33 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/7I90_space2.jpg
06:33 PM Tom_L: that's touching the top of the cabinet
06:34 PM Tom_L: it can't be that tall
06:35 PM Tom_L: his cards are 4" wide
06:39 PM rue_mohr: yup, you have like a 15" cable to get to the card
06:39 PM rue_mohr: we abandoned direct mount
06:39 PM Tom_L: 15 would be way too much
06:39 PM rue_mohr: yes, its... availale
06:39 PM rue_mohr: :)
06:39 PM Tom_L: bet the card edge and plug?
06:40 PM Tom_L: show me what you got
06:40 PM rue_mohr: I have a testplot...
06:40 PM Tom_L: and you can see the edge locks there too
06:41 PM Tom_L: are you doing plug - ribbon - card - ribbon?
06:42 PM rue_mohr: mesa cable board
06:42 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1210296.jpg
06:43 PM rue_mohr: that "second header row" is just pads for protection resistors
06:43 PM Tom_L: how many straigh thru are there?
06:43 PM rue_mohr: the mess on the left is 4 opto channels
06:43 PM Tom_L: i know
06:43 PM rue_mohr: 20 thu, 4 sourcing-opto
06:43 PM Tom_L: ok
06:43 PM rue_mohr: think it'd do it?
06:44 PM rue_mohr: I wanted to smt it all for practise, but doesn't work out
06:45 PM rue_mohr: with my gear I cant hit the resoutions to make it small
06:45 PM rue_mohr: I pulled some stunts to keep it that small
06:45 PM Tom_L: 4 out is plenty
06:46 PM Tom_L: the rest can just be straight thru. that's how they are now
06:46 PM Tom_L: remember one of those is power
06:47 PM Tom_L: 49?
06:47 PM Tom_L: so you can actually use that to power the optos if you want
06:47 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/P2_pinout1.jpg
06:47 PM Tom_L: it's 5v
06:51 PM rue_mohr: thats the one on the loooooong jumper
06:51 PM rue_mohr: from the 50 pin header
06:53 PM Tom_L: my eyes aren't that good
06:54 PM rue_mohr: mine are degrading
06:54 PM rue_mohr: and my hearing is falling under a threshold where I'm noticing
06:54 PM rue_mohr: :/
06:54 PM rue_mohr: when I did the hearing test, the results showed a issue with one ear
06:54 PM rue_mohr: at 6khz
07:35 PM Tom_L: i got new specs yesterday but only got the distance ones. the others are on order still
07:35 PM Tom_L: getting hearing checked in a couple weeks
07:35 PM Tom_L: my right one is crap
07:35 PM rue_mohr: I wish I knew more audio dsp
07:36 PM rue_mohr: tho, honestly, I think analog filters are much more resource efficient
07:36 PM rue_mohr: just not as easily adjusted
07:36 PM Tom_L: getting hearing aids then too i'm sure
07:36 PM Tom_L: that'll be a kick in the pants
07:36 PM rue_mohr: not at $8000
07:36 PM Tom_L: 5 or 6
07:36 PM rue_mohr: make my own thanks
07:37 PM rue_mohr: 8k here
07:37 PM Tom_L: wow
07:37 PM Tom_L: my inlaw has some and i'll likely get some similar
07:37 PM rue_mohr: "insurance pays for it" unless it wont
07:37 PM Tom_L: his are bluetooth and can be adjusted from his phone
07:37 PM Tom_L: mine won't
07:37 PM rue_mohr: yea
07:38 PM rue_mohr: how about just use bluetooth and your phone :)
07:38 PM Tom_L: covid fucked up my vision i'm sure of it
07:38 PM rue_mohr: its been known to mess with more than that
07:38 PM Tom_L: it affected me in many weird ways
07:38 PM Tom_L: most have subsided now
07:38 PM Tom_L: still get tired
07:39 PM Tom_L: but i'm alive
07:39 PM rue_mohr: I'm trying to work out how to make an off-line power converter
07:39 PM rue_mohr: ac adapter, 48vdc out
07:39 PM rue_mohr: 1A
07:39 PM rue_mohr: I dont usually play with mains
07:40 PM rue_mohr: what I'm comming up with is a hybrid of a halogen lamp driver and a cfl ballast
07:40 PM rue_mohr: I'm clear for my second covid shot
07:41 PM rue_mohr: I have to work out where to go
07:41 PM rue_mohr: they move around every day of the week and only post a schedule for the next week
07:41 PM rue_mohr: I'm usually booked a week in advance
07:41 PM rue_mohr: at work
07:41 PM rue_mohr: if not 2
07:43 PM Tom_L: i can't get one yet
07:43 PM rue_mohr: no point
07:43 PM Tom_L: gotta wait 60 days
07:43 PM rue_mohr: youv'e had it
07:43 PM Tom_L: i know
07:43 PM Tom_L: she want's to get them
07:43 PM rue_mohr: no point tho, you already have the antibodies
07:43 PM Tom_L: i can tell you this
07:43 PM Tom_L: i don't want it twice
07:44 PM rue_mohr: I dont know if thats happened yet
07:44 PM Tom_L: my sis in law has had it 2x
07:44 PM Tom_L: she works in a covid unit
07:44 PM rue_mohr: !!
07:44 PM Tom_L: as does her daughter
07:44 PM Tom_L: nurses
07:48 PM rue_shop3: so as med staff, why didn't they have shots?
07:49 PM aandrew: rue_mohr: is it just because you're up in the boonies? I suspect mainland has shots available at every drug store
07:50 PM rue_shop3: they have a traveling "clinic" where they do the shots
07:50 PM rue_shop3: it roams from one side of the coast to the other
07:50 PM rue_shop3: different places on different days
07:51 PM aandrew: ah sounds like a boonies thing then
07:52 PM Tom_L: they did
07:52 PM Tom_L: they offered her hazzard pay at an additional $100/hr
07:53 PM Tom_L: you can get a shot here on just about every street corner
07:53 PM rue_shop3: .. she had a shot and got it?
07:53 PM Tom_L: i'm not sure which followed which
07:53 PM rue_shop3: well, I suppose, to some degreee, the shots make it not hit you as hard
07:53 PM aandrew: yep that's the idea
07:53 PM Tom_L: they had to be vaccinated though so probably that came first
07:54 PM aandrew: my understanding is that the nose/lung tissue is not particularly well protected so you still get it, but when the virus tries to hit the bloodstream it's very well repelled
07:54 PM Tom_L: it didn't get to my lungs
07:54 PM Tom_L: but i did have a good cough
07:56 PM aandrew: yeah it was bad for my wife, nobody else here has had it yet
07:59 PM Tom_L: give it time
08:00 PM aandrew: well I'm vaccinated, my 12yo is 1st dose vaccinated, 18yo daughter and 9yo son are not
08:00 PM aandrew: but they dn't go anywhere
08:05 PM rue_shop3: I'm worried about two things, major revision 2, 3, 4...
08:06 PM rue_shop3: and the vaccinated passports, creeping into insisting you have things nobody needs
08:06 PM rue_shop3: which I'm sure will happen
08:07 PM rue_shop3: slope on that one is way too steep to not go wrong
08:09 PM rue_shop3: hmmm, this power supply has me divided
08:13 PM aandrew: yeah things are not quite right
08:18 PM rue_shop3: these halogen power converters are really, really, horrid
08:20 PM Tom_L: what are you trying to make a psu for?
08:21 PM Tom_L: led strip?
08:31 PM rue_mohr: an led strip on the end of a long wire run of small guage wire
08:31 PM rue_mohr: so I need to keep the power at about 48V for the run, then step it down to 12
08:32 PM rue_mohr: hey, what about plain 'ole AC
08:32 PM rue_mohr: about 30w
08:32 PM rue_mohr: I should see what I have...
08:52 PM rue_shop3: aha, 50vct
10:12 PM rue_mohr: so, if I carry it down there as AC
10:12 PM rue_mohr: I get about 70V rectified
10:12 PM rue_mohr: makes for a hell of a converter
10:12 PM rue_mohr: down to 12V
10:13 PM rue_mohr: about 500mA
10:13 PM rue_mohr: I have 2.5 ohms on the run out there
10:21 PM Tom_L: does it matter if it's full rectified or not?
10:21 PM Tom_L: voltage wise
10:22 PM Tom_L: my 24v is using a single diode
10:22 PM Tom_L: that was kat's idea
10:23 PM rue_mohr: yea,I need to keep the line current down and be low noise
10:23 PM rue_mohr: for this
10:25 PM Tom_L: i _think_ the 24v feeds both those smps regulators the 5 and 10v
10:25 PM Tom_L: because the 48v would have been too much for them
10:26 PM rue_mohr: yup!
10:26 PM rue_mohr: part of my current issue, those only go up to 36V, if you belive the spec
10:28 PM Tom_L: have you committed to the board you're making?
10:29 PM rue_mohr: its not etched yet
10:29 PM Tom_L: i have one thing i might try but i need to find out first
10:29 PM rue_mohr: I was airating the etchant
10:29 PM rue_mohr: its that air regenerated stuff
10:29 PM rue_mohr: but there is too much water in it
10:29 PM Tom_L: instead of sourcing the led, i might use the fpga pin to sync it and swap the gnd wire on the led for +5v
10:30 PM Tom_L: they will sync more current than source
10:30 PM Tom_L: but i don't know how much
10:30 PM rue_mohr: so, back in the olde days
10:30 PM rue_mohr: they would put the led on ground side, with a pull up resistor to turn it on
10:30 PM Tom_L: but i dunno if i'll test it tomorrow
10:30 PM rue_mohr: and use an open collector output to shunt the led off
10:30 PM Tom_L: yeah
10:30 PM rue_mohr: do you know what current the fpga can do?
10:31 PM Tom_L: no, that's the problem
10:31 PM Tom_L: all i need is to fix that one pin then i've got what i need
10:32 PM Tom_L: that will free up two tx lines on the daughter card if i get rid of the sserial which i'm not using anyway
10:33 PM Tom_L: and i already included wires for the A axis limits
10:33 PM Tom_L: i would need an enable but i think i can chain all the drivers to one
10:34 PM rue_mohr: gonna take you weeks to get it all rewired
10:34 PM Tom_L: no
10:34 PM rue_mohr: your stock of small heat shrink good?
10:34 PM Tom_L: it's not that complicated
10:34 PM Tom_L: fair
10:34 PM Tom_L: move the estop wire
10:34 PM Tom_L: add step/direction wires to the driver
10:35 PM Tom_L: the high v wires are run to it already
10:35 PM Tom_L: i did that in advance
10:35 PM Tom_L: drill another hole in the box for a disconnect
10:35 PM Tom_L: i'm not too excited about that
10:36 PM Tom_L: last one i think i taped something around it inside to catch the chips
10:36 PM Tom_L: i can get heatshrink from the local electrical supply
10:36 PM Tom_L: they have a rack sitting by the order desk
10:37 PM rue_mohr: :)
10:37 PM Tom_L: i've gotten a few things from them now and then
10:38 PM Tom_L: the roll of stepper wire was one
10:38 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Wiring/Wire1.jpg
10:42 PM rue_mohr: 18/4 , nice
10:43 PM Tom_L: they just happened to have that one roll
