01:56 AM rue_bed: I found a 3.3V regulator for the cpld board I'm designing
02:04 AM rue_bed: I just went with a linear one
02:04 AM rue_bed: most of hte stuff I have with dc-dc regulators that were in the right zone, were integrated into complex chips OR they used discrete parts to do the regulation
02:04 AM rue_bed: didn't see any of the soic regulators I was hoping to just scoop off an existing board
02:04 AM rue_bed: I'll have to look into that more
08:41 AM polprog: rue_mohr: that pc is nice, im looking for a way to fix the cards in that cardputer project
09:07 AM rue_mohr: is the address bus issue sorted?
09:26 AM rue_mohr: hmmm, so, do I have all the components I want on this pcb?
09:26 AM rue_mohr: BGA, so I only get 1 go at this
09:38 AM rue_mohr: should I get two boards and put a dummy on the first one?
11:33 AM polprog: it seems that D0-D7 are okay and wired correctly
11:33 AM polprog: So i guess that it's a case of finding the BIOS rom
08:06 PM rue_mohr: oh, thought you said there was a bus problem
08:07 PM rue_mohr: and I got the impression taht last bios worked
08:10 PM aandrew: evening everyone
08:10 PM rue_mohr: hi
08:10 PM aandrew: what's shakin tonight?
08:10 PM aandrew: I should be soldering up these new boards but am procrastinating
08:10 PM aandrew: wife leaving for BC for ~6w very early tomorrow so can't stay up late since I take her to the airport
08:11 PM rue_mohr: oh I should etch that board
08:11 PM aandrew: I paid JLCPCB to do that for me
08:11 PM aandrew: although I should do that a few times with the boys so they get the magic
08:11 PM rue_mohr: I settled on a linear for the cpld board
08:11 PM rue_mohr: for that lcd I have
08:11 PM rue_mohr: its a 2mm pitch
08:11 PM rue_mohr: I did an adapter to take it to 0.1"
08:12 PM aandrew: what is your magic etchant formula? the last time I did this it was ammonium persulfate
08:12 PM aandrew: heh I saw that tweet
08:12 PM aandrew: aaand we'll just plug this in...shit
08:12 PM rue_mohr: yep,
08:12 PM rue_mohr: ferric chloride etches nice but bleck
08:13 PM aandrew: yeah that was the first method I used. it's like working with a huge pan of iodine
08:13 PM rue_mohr: but that literally leaves rust eveywhere
08:13 PM aandrew: man I am just remembering now the first board I ever etched with my dad using ferric chloride
08:13 PM rue_mohr: it makes a nice clean etch
08:13 PM rue_mohr: rarely overetches
08:13 PM rue_mohr: re-usable to hell
08:14 PM aandrew: yeah but really the magic to etching is agitation and heat
08:14 PM rue_mohr: yep
08:14 PM aandrew: oh and using CLEAN copper for the pattern
08:14 PM rue_mohr: has to be clean
08:14 PM aandrew: it was either Grossblatt or Lancaster who I learned from: dirty copper is whitish, CLEAN copper is pinkish
08:15 PM aandrew: which is kind of counterintuitive for a kid, because pennies are copper coloured, scrub the shit out of the board and it's copper coloured, must be clean
08:15 PM aandrew: but no it's like burned flesh colour when it's clean
08:16 PM aandrew: and the thing I remember most from that "Stuff" book by Amato is that stainless steel is "stainless" because of the chromium content; chromium oxide is invisible
08:16 PM aandrew: that was such a great book
08:17 PM aandrew: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/0241413524 <-- got this book recently, looking forward to reading it
08:18 PM rue_mohr: k
08:29 PM rue_shop2: hmmm, I made a silly mistake with my project box
08:32 PM Tom_L: ?
08:32 PM rue_shop2: well
08:32 PM rue_shop2: cant get at the lugs unelsss you take the cover off
08:32 PM rue_shop2: and the screws for that are under the mounting plate
08:32 PM rue_shop2: :)
08:32 PM rue_shop2: I have a fix
08:33 PM Tom_L: the one we did?
08:33 PM Tom_L: longer screws thru the lid
08:33 PM Tom_L: or back then i think you mentioned standoffs
08:35 PM rue_shop2: no
08:36 PM rue_shop2: its a greenhouse timer I did a cpld for
08:36 PM rue_shop2: 9536
08:37 PM rue_shop2: I saw a good one today
08:37 PM rue_shop2: a RF telephone link that wasn't working
08:37 PM rue_shop2: used two big xlilinx in it
08:38 PM Tom_L: :)
08:40 PM Tom_L: did you snatch it up?
08:40 PM rue_shop2: couldn't get it working
08:40 PM rue_shop2: no
08:40 PM Tom_L: :/
08:40 PM rue_shop2: really undocumented hardware
08:52 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1200511.jpg
08:52 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1200512.jpg
08:53 PM Tom_L: water tight?
08:53 PM rue_mohr: hell no
08:54 PM Tom_L: haha
08:54 PM rue_mohr: it goes in another box
08:54 PM rue_mohr: most of that is just mechanical protection
09:01 PM Tom_L: did you get the timing worked out?
09:01 PM rue_mohr: ? it seems fine
09:01 PM Tom_L: 6hr / 2 min
09:01 PM Tom_L: cpld?
09:01 PM rue_mohr: the 2 mins was ok, which follows that the 6hrs would be too
09:01 PM rue_mohr: yea
09:01 PM rue_mohr: xc9536
09:01 PM rue_mohr: barely fit!
09:01 PM Tom_L: big counters
09:01 PM rue_mohr: due to lut space
09:02 PM rue_mohr: no, only 30 bits
09:02 PM rue_mohr: er, actually, 29 bits
09:02 PM rue_mohr: somehow I was out by 1
09:03 PM Tom_L: what clock source?
09:03 PM Tom_L: 32768?
09:03 PM rue_mohr: hmm, if I'm carefull to power it up at the 7:15 ish mark I can watch the 12 hour activation tomrmoow morning
09:03 PM rue_mohr: yup
09:04 PM rue_mohr: dont have anything slower
09:04 PM Tom_L: you have to ground the xtal case?
09:04 PM rue_mohr: well, the rtc chips output 1hz, but
09:04 PM Tom_L: usually do on those
09:04 PM rue_mohr: yea, I did
09:04 PM rue_mohr: it did strange things when not
09:04 PM rue_mohr: if I hurry
09:05 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/misc_stuff/RTC3.jpg
09:40 PM rue_shop2: ok! 7:16 or so tommorow morning it shoudl go off
09:40 PM rue_shop2: 2 minutes might be too long, that seems like a lot of water
09:40 PM rue_shop2: yea, I got a few rtc chips from china because they are cheaper non-volatile ram than non-volatile ram
09:42 PM Tom_L: how big a stream of water?
09:42 PM Tom_L: and how big an area to water?
09:42 PM rue_mohr: its 8 or 10 sprayers
09:43 PM rue_mohr: i think its an 8x10 greenhouse
09:43 PM rue_mohr: ma keeps trying to use it to store her art
09:43 PM rue_mohr: I can keep plants watered at the same time I keeep it FOR plants
09:43 PM Tom_L: i run my stations anywhere between 4 & 7 min
09:44 PM rue_mohr: ;)
09:44 PM rue_mohr: its a little 12V pump on a solar panel and car battery
09:44 PM Tom_L: 20 on the back but it's a big area
09:44 PM Tom_L: hand dug every inch of it
09:45 PM rue_mohr: 3d printed a new tp roll holder when my existing one crumbled
09:45 PM Tom_L: heh
09:45 PM rue_mohr: the new one is doing its job well
09:45 PM rue_mohr: which is nice, the old one was half staying togethor for months
09:54 PM rue_shop2: 8pm
09:54 PM Tom_L: using light weight sprinkler heads on the greenhouse?
09:54 PM rue_shop2: I think I have time to etch that board
09:54 PM rue_shop2: yea, their like misters
09:54 PM Tom_L: right
09:54 PM rue_shop2: must be like 10 of them
09:55 PM rue_shop2: on 1/4" pipe
09:55 PM rue_shop2: or smaller
09:55 PM Tom_L: for flower beds etc
09:55 PM Tom_L: 2 min shouldn't be too much
09:56 PM Tom_L: will it prime ok?
09:56 PM rue_mohr: everything is really dripping
09:56 PM Tom_L: hmm
09:56 PM rue_mohr: yea, it can self-prime, but its downsteam of the 1000L tank
09:57 PM Tom_L: you should have used gravity and a valve
09:57 PM Tom_L: i've started cleaning out the shop some
09:58 PM Tom_L: things i said i might need some day
09:58 PM Tom_L: so far that day hasn't come
09:58 PM Tom_L: that FR4 is on the list
09:59 PM Tom_L: flourescent ballasts aren't much good anymore are they?
10:01 PM Tom_L: i've got a few 4' strips i've taken down and replaced with led
10:01 PM Tom_L: not much reason to keep is there?
10:04 PM rue_mohr: eek
10:04 PM rue_mohr: ditch the ballasts
10:04 PM rue_mohr: we need to figure out the fr4
10:05 PM rue_mohr: how many lbs?
10:05 PM Tom_L: 100 if an oz
10:05 PM rue_mohr: ?
10:06 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/etching/Copper1.jpg
10:06 PM rue_mohr: I wonder if my truck could make it down there any back in a week
10:06 PM rue_mohr: do you stil have all that tho?
10:06 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/etching/Copper2.jpg
10:06 PM Tom_L: yup
10:06 PM rue_mohr: k
10:06 PM Tom_L: and several half sheets
10:07 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/etching/Copper3.jpg
10:07 PM rue_mohr: well, how does one ship a pallette of stuff
10:07 PM Tom_L: 99% is double sided .060
10:07 PM Tom_L: i was gonna look for a local board house that might use it
10:07 PM Tom_L: if not it's off to the dump
10:07 PM rue_mohr: they wouldn't want it
10:07 PM rue_mohr: no wait I need to work this out
10:07 PM Tom_L: yeah i doubt it
10:08 PM rue_mohr: how long is it?
10:08 PM rue_mohr: 4'?
10:08 PM rue_mohr: longest?
10:08 PM Tom_L: the big sheets are probably 3 x 4
10:08 PM rue_mohr: ok, so a pallette would fit it
10:08 PM Tom_L: i dunno, i'd have to measure them
10:09 PM rue_mohr: 4' is close 'nuff
10:09 PM Tom_L: i'm not gonna mess with shipping it, too big a pita
10:09 PM rue_mohr: no its a different rate for a pallette
10:09 PM rue_mohr: different bracket, well worth it
10:10 PM rue_mohr: people ship transformers and switch gear all the time
10:10 PM Tom_L: no way for me to transport it etc
10:10 PM rue_mohr: you dont ahve to
10:10 PM rue_mohr: let me work this out with the guy I know who knows shipping
10:10 PM Tom_L: you'll have to do alot of convincing here
10:11 PM rue_mohr: its done a LOT for not a fortune
10:11 PM rue_mohr: I'm in a company thats had too many large things shipped from the states to not beleive it
10:11 PM Tom_L: you got more than enough to keep you busy several lifetimes
10:11 PM rue_mohr: let me work on this
10:12 PM Tom_L: it's still sitting there
10:12 PM rue_mohr: oh, damn I started the tank
10:12 PM Tom_L: same spot as when i took those pics
10:12 PM rue_mohr: and didn't start supper
10:12 PM Tom_L: anyway i got plenty else to sift thru
10:13 PM rue_mohr: :S
10:15 PM Tom_L: no i'm not gonna ship it all to you :)
10:16 PM rue_mohr: not even if I'm paying?
10:16 PM rue_mohr: :)
10:17 PM rue_mohr: do you mean to imply that some of the clad is single sided?
10:17 PM Tom_L: not that i know of
10:17 PM rue_mohr: oh,
10:17 PM Tom_L: there was 1 piece that was half that thick but i dunno if it's still on the pile
10:17 PM rue_mohr: I spend a LOT of time peeling one side off two sided clad
10:18 PM Tom_L: i'm guessing 99.9% is double sided
10:18 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/etching/etch5.jpg
10:18 PM Tom_L: that tank and toaster oven is going too
10:18 PM Tom_L: bubbler etc
10:18 PM Tom_L: i'll never use it now
10:19 PM Tom_L: even if i did a board it's easier to have them made
10:21 PM rue_shop3: eek
10:22 PM rue_shop3: if a pallette is 100lbs it doesn't matter if its 300
10:32 PM rue_shop3: it would much pain me to know any of all that stuff went to waste
10:34 PM Tom_L: then i won't tell you that's just the remains of 2 pickups full of FR4 we got rid of
10:35 PM Tom_L: along with 5 gal of acid
10:35 PM Tom_L: i didn't want to store the acid though
10:36 PM rue_shop3: no I know that
10:36 PM rue_shop3: I already lose sleep over that
10:37 PM rue_shop3: no, the acid you cant transport anyhow
10:37 PM rue_shop3: ferric chloride seems to be ok after 20 years, the other stuff goes bad after 2?
11:46 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1200515.jpg

11:46 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1200525.jpg
11:47 PM rue_mohr: thats two of the 3 things off my todo list for the week
11:47 PM rue_mohr: who, I suppose tommroow is thursday
11:47 PM rue_mohr: tho
11:47 PM rue_mohr: oh wait, the 3rd thing was the 3.3V regulator for the pcb
11:47 PM rue_mohr: and I did that yesterday kinda
