12:01 AM rue_shop2: I know the mystery chip, its the 3rd cpld
03:58 AM Tom_L: finally got jtag working ehh?
08:32 AM rue_mohr: its a jtag port on some network equipment
11:10 AM aandrew: rue_mohr: what was the trick to getting JTAG up on that?
01:05 PM polprog: im making an adapter to use the jtag port on PCIe cards
04:16 PM polprog: https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/739849787238776855/865323091306348584/unknown.png
04:39 PM Tom_L: that looks like a board
07:14 PM rue_mohr: aandrew, just a matter of not reversing the pinout
07:15 PM rue_mohr: polprog, wait, what????
07:16 PM rue_mohr: why do pcie cards have a jtag port?!?
07:17 PM polprog: i dont know. But the standard says they do and the pins have traces going soneehere on minr
07:17 PM rue_mohr: !!!!
07:17 PM rue_mohr: cooool
07:18 PM polprog: probably for testing but i dont know why would you test a pcir card in system
07:18 PM polprog: shrunk the layour a bit
07:18 PM polprog: https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/621190539148001299/865373601150009354/unknown.png
07:18 PM polprog: layout
07:19 PM polprog: I got a JLink coming from ali express paid $10, im sure its genuine
07:19 PM polprog: and some pcie slots
07:20 PM polprog: can you imagine no distributor stocks regular pci express slots in european warehouses?
07:20 PM polprog: they only have mPCIe
07:20 PM rue_mohr: oh no, use ft232
07:21 PM rue_mohr: or if you want to use openocd, you should just make a parallel port adatpter cause thats the only thing that really works
07:21 PM polprog: i have it connected to the fpga
07:21 PM polprog: No parport on the lab PC
07:21 PM polprog: though
07:21 PM polprog: wait i have a parport pcie card
07:22 PM rue_mohr: didn't say it was easy
07:22 PM polprog: hmm
07:22 PM polprog: :)
07:22 PM polprog: yeah i like to have options.
07:22 PM polprog: I have to make up some nice labels for the cables on the ft232... with my printer
07:22 PM rue_mohr: did you see mine?
07:25 PM polprog: yes, with a little board on top
07:26 PM polprog: sometime ago
07:26 PM polprog: what is it?
07:30 PM aandrew: polprog> I got a JLink coming from ali express paid $10, im sure its genuine
07:30 PM aandrew: LOL
07:30 PM polprog: :p
07:30 PM aandrew: any STM32 dev board (discovery-blah, Nucleo-blah, etc.) with on-board ST-Link can be turned into a j-link with a firmware update from Segger
07:30 PM polprog: oh, nice
07:31 PM aandrew: well sorry - ALMOST any - the newest ones use st-link v3 and that isn't possible to reflash to j-link
07:31 PM polprog: i didnt know that..
07:31 PM aandrew: the caveat is that they say you can only use it to debug the connected stm32, but if you're not super worried about that...
07:31 PM polprog: heh
07:31 PM aandrew: it's like the j-link edu supposed to be only for school
07:31 PM polprog: does it work with the pendrive style stlink clones?
07:32 PM aandrew: ... I don't know, I kind of doubt it
07:32 PM polprog: i guess ill put a sticker over the segger logo anyway
07:32 PM aandrew: the uber-cheap ones that barely work as st-link?
07:32 PM polprog: yeah, i doubt it too
07:33 PM polprog: that would be hilarious, i dont know how much a genuine jlink costs
07:33 PM polprog: but it would be hilarious if segger just said "yeah or you can reprogram the 2 dollar one, whatever"
07:34 PM polprog: goodnight :)
07:36 PM rue_mohr: !!! MY BOTTLE OPENER PARTS ARRIVED!!!
07:42 PM rue_mohr: wow thats an amazing finish
07:42 PM aandrew: rue_mohr: ... I could have sent you a half dozen bottle openers. :-)
07:42 PM rue_mohr: these ones were made in the USA
07:42 PM rue_mohr: kansas
07:43 PM * rue_mohr looks at Tom_L
07:45 PM * Tom_L looks at rue_mohr
07:46 PM Tom_L: standoff?
07:46 PM rue_mohr: shiney finish
07:46 PM rue_mohr: !
07:46 PM Tom_L: came a day early?
07:46 PM rue_mohr: I'll try bending the oops'd one!
07:46 PM rue_mohr: :)
07:46 PM Tom_L: ok a handfull are marked
07:46 PM Tom_L: i forgot what i put on them
07:47 PM rue_mohr: "setup"
07:47 PM Tom_L: but there's only one with the 'hard' material
07:47 PM rue_mohr: oh
07:47 PM Tom_L: that one has the gouge in the can part
07:47 PM rue_mohr: "last"
07:47 PM Tom_L: last of the 'good' batch ?
07:47 PM Tom_L: i don't remember :)
07:48 PM rue_mohr: "cld"
07:48 PM Tom_L: i figured the one with the gouge, half is still good
07:48 PM Tom_L: huh?
07:48 PM rue_mohr: oh
07:48 PM rue_mohr: "old" "new"
07:48 PM Tom_L: i mark stuff that makes sense at the time and forget it
07:49 PM rue_mohr: :)
07:49 PM Tom_L: old is probably the first material (hard)
07:49 PM Tom_L: the other stuff seemed softer
07:50 PM rue_mohr: this looks awesome!
07:50 PM Tom_L: you like the slot?
07:50 PM rue_mohr: looks like it was noisy!
07:51 PM Tom_L: a couple of those may not be good either
07:51 PM Tom_L: no, just the cuts as it progressed
07:51 PM Tom_L: it was a bit noisy but all those cutters are
07:54 PM Tom_L: those last ones of A9-A10 turned out pretty good
07:55 PM Tom_L: some of them the lip may be a little thin on the 'hex' ended parts
07:58 PM Tom_L: i'm curious how those tabs bend
07:58 PM rue_mohr: the facets look kinda coool
07:59 PM rue_mohr: just getting to the shop
08:20 PM rue_mohr: bent good!
08:21 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1200251.jpg
08:21 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1200252.jpg
08:21 PM rue_mohr: stressed, but fine
08:22 PM rue_mohr: I'm not sure which is the hard one
08:28 PM Tom_L: the finish on the raw material should give it away
08:29 PM Tom_L: it's the only oddball i think
08:29 PM Tom_L: i don't see any stress cracks from the bend
08:29 PM Tom_L: that was a soft one btw
08:29 PM Tom_L: i can tell from here
08:30 PM Tom_L: i can get tons of that
08:38 PM rue_shop3: one kinda looks different
08:38 PM Tom_L: kinda 'grainy' or brushed finish?
08:38 PM rue_shop3: I'd like to show sean before we bend them all ;)
08:38 PM Tom_L: that's the hard one probably
08:38 PM Tom_L: heh
08:39 PM Tom_L: tell him he's gotta make them all shine like that
08:39 PM Tom_L: the chamfer look ok on A12?
08:40 PM Tom_L: some vary a bit but no sharp edges
08:41 PM rue_mohr: yea, looks like you had some fun with some alignment on a few :)
08:48 PM Tom_L: some i'd call setup parts but i try not to waste any if they're useable
08:48 PM Tom_L: all 3 of those were new programs
08:48 PM Tom_L: you didn't get any A8
08:49 PM Tom_L: you seem to do those pretty good just a little slower
09:12 PM rue_mohr: :)
09:13 PM rue_mohr: I just feed the machine when its idle
09:13 PM rue_mohr: they stack up
09:13 PM Tom_L: your finish would improve with coolant ya know
09:13 PM Tom_L: i started a couple without to see and it made a big difference
09:14 PM Tom_L: especially on that new softer material
09:14 PM rue_mohr: hmm
09:14 PM rue_mohr: the gummyness probably makes it harder that way
09:17 PM Tom_L: did you try bending that hard one?
09:17 PM Tom_L: it may be the one marked 'old'
09:19 PM Tom_L: and.. do they feel harder to bend that what you use?
09:41 PM rue_mohr: I havn't done any in a long time, that one seemed fine
09:41 PM rue_mohr: but it did look more stressed by the bending than I'm used to seeing
09:41 PM rue_mohr: then again, its got a finish that shows it well
09:45 PM Tom_L: maybe you should run em thru your tumbler and tone em down a bit
09:45 PM rue_mohr: its fine
09:47 PM Tom_L: your canada post didn't say they'd be there til tomorrow
09:47 PM rue_mohr: heh
09:47 PM Tom_L: 9 days
09:47 PM Tom_L: not too bad
09:52 PM rue_mohr: hmm still need a regulator for the cpld
09:53 PM rue_mohr: kicad is a bratt
09:53 PM rue_mohr: it often doesn't want to do what you tell it to
09:56 PM Tom_L: never used it
09:56 PM Tom_L: i always used eagle
10:00 PM rue_mohr: I'm not putting a lot of effort into being neat, I want to know if I can pull off the bga thing
10:00 PM rue_mohr: and I'm learning kicad
10:01 PM rue_mohr: I defintly want to change the code that does scroll zoom
10:05 PM aandrew: I'm still avoiding kicad
10:05 PM aandrew: but getting closer
10:07 PM rue_mohr: it could use more work
10:07 PM rue_mohr: you can start a line or start to move an object by pressing a keybaord key, but pressing the key again wont put it down or otherwise complete the operation, you have to click
10:08 PM rue_mohr: which makes an awefull split between using mouse and keyboard keys
10:08 PM Tom_L: awkward
10:08 PM aandrew: that's one thing I really appreciated about eagle, and which altium does an excellent job of: keyboard shortcuts
10:11 PM rue_mohr: I dont think the coders of kicad had any ui experience
10:18 PM aandrew: they've had enough financial support for enough time to have remedied that several times over
10:19 PM aandrew: although I have *never* run into a better hand assembly tool than the interactive html bom utility
10:19 PM rue_mohr: but apparenlty no good coders
10:19 PM aandrew: It's fucking *awesome*
10:20 PM rue_mohr: I'm really thinking I should just go with a 3 terminal smt linear regulator
10:20 PM rue_mohr: worst case is 0.5A
10:20 PM rue_mohr: input is 5V, output is 3.3V
10:21 PM rue_mohr: zippo:/files/graphics/pictures/2021/temp# ohm -v 1.7 -i 0.5
10:21 PM rue_mohr: Power is: 850.000mW
10:21 PM rue_mohr: 1w, so I can give it LOTS of copper
10:21 PM aandrew: what's wrong with practically any switcher? 850mW is a fair bit
10:21 PM rue_mohr: well
10:22 PM rue_mohr: its more specialty parts to assemble
10:22 PM aandrew: a lot of them you're basically adding 1 inductor
10:22 PM rue_mohr: tho, if I find the right one, it should just be a chip, inductor, and capacitors
10:22 PM aandrew: integrated switch, integrated catch diode and way way cooler
10:22 PM rue_mohr: yup
10:22 PM rue_mohr: but 0.5A is worst case
10:23 PM aandrew: yeah
10:23 PM aandrew: until you grow the spec and use more current :-)
10:23 PM rue_mohr: yea, I'm trying to not make this board a portfolio
10:23 PM rue_mohr: I mostly want to know if I can pull off a bga
10:24 PM rue_mohr: and I think I can do this in 2 layers
10:25 PM rue_mohr: check this out....
10:32 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/Untitled.png
10:32 PM rue_mohr: keeping pretty simple eh?
10:32 PM Tom_L: looks like fun
10:32 PM Tom_L: until you get to the inner pads
10:32 PM rue_mohr: prettymuch all the signals are escaped
10:32 PM rue_mohr: I need vias for the power
10:32 PM rue_mohr: but there aren't any inner pads i need
10:32 PM rue_mohr: less the ones I'v already snuck out between
10:32 PM Tom_L: is that a standard IC width?
10:32 PM rue_mohr: I have to re-align the headers tho, kicad got off-grid and screwed them up
10:32 PM rue_mohr: hell no
10:32 PM Tom_L: hahaha
10:32 PM rue_mohr: its one of those evil dev boards
10:32 PM rue_mohr: wondering if I should put a usb on it for power
10:32 PM Tom_L: center plug jtag?
10:32 PM rue_mohr: but I have a power on my jtag, so, whatever
10:32 PM rue_mohr: yea
10:34 PM rue_mohr: I have to wonder if this would just go in the box with the other cpld boards
10:53 PM Tom_L: i have one of those boxes too
10:56 PM Tom_L: i wonder what else those logger guys could use
10:56 PM Tom_L: you should think about that
11:03 PM rue_mohr: I'm trying to work out priorities
11:08 PM Tom_L: yep, ya gotta do that sometimes
11:08 PM Tom_L: i know i did
11:10 PM rue_mohr: I'm pretty far back from where I should be
11:11 PM rue_mohr: there are a lot of thigns I wish I'd just worked on and not worried about them being stupid
11:14 PM rue_mohr: maybe perogies for supper?
11:17 PM Tom_L: supper was over hours ago!
