02:40 PM rue_mohr: I had a question holding me up on the test, had to sacrafice it to get the test done, I just worked out the right answer tho
02:48 PM rue_mohr: big one on monday, its likley to knock me down a lot
03:46 PM Tom_L: better get plenty of brain rest over the weekend
04:38 PM rue_mohr: I have to work it like hell for the test on monday
04:38 PM rue_mohr: then there is an over-all test on tuesday
04:38 PM rue_mohr: just think, in a month it'll be business as usual
04:39 PM Tom_L: when does the class end?
04:39 PM rue_mohr: technically last class is over
04:39 PM rue_mohr: they have an 'oh, the provincial test will be asking about this stuff too' class later
04:40 PM Tom_L: you have any luck communicating with vendors on alibaba?
04:41 PM Tom_itx: https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/310V-1-2kw-electric-motor-1200w_60737993181.html?spm=a2700.7724857.videoBannerStyleB_top.9.32c7751dTHUvzS
04:42 PM Tom_L: wanted to see if that was available in 110v and make sure it was 0-10v input control as well
04:42 PM Tom_L: pretty sure it is
04:42 PM Tom_L: but not sure on the supply
04:43 PM rue_mohr: .... you already have a motor....
04:43 PM rue_mohr: ??
04:43 PM Tom_L: i know but if it was available maybe somebody else might want one
04:43 PM Tom_L: i doubt it would be big enough for a cnc lathe conversion
04:44 PM Tom_L: i'm quite sure that's where he sourced them
04:45 PM Tom_L: i found a 2200w set as well
04:47 PM rue_mohr: the sellers like to say they will do anything for you, but when I'v ever asked for anything, they say thy cant
04:50 PM Tom_L: how can i make a dvd backup of a linux drive that can be restored?
04:50 PM Tom_L: iso like? i dunno
04:50 PM rue_mohr: hmm
04:51 PM Tom_L: i wanna update my mill software but don't wanna risk screwing it up. i've got extra ssd to use
04:51 PM rue_mohr: how much file data is there on the drive?
04:51 PM Tom_L: i was gonna mirror the ssd and use the backup to work on
04:51 PM Tom_L: not much
04:51 PM rue_mohr: mirroring its easier
04:51 PM Tom_L: just the mill and maybe hexchat etc
04:51 PM rue_mohr: cat /dev/sda > /dev/sdb
04:52 PM rue_mohr: how bis is the drive?
04:52 PM Tom_L: i may pull it and do it on my windows box
04:52 PM Tom_L: 500?
04:52 PM Tom_L: i think
04:52 PM rue_mohr: 500G?
04:52 PM Tom_L: yeah
04:52 PM rue_mohr: k, and how big is the linux partition with the data on it?
04:52 PM Tom_L: all of it
04:52 PM rue_mohr: ouch
04:53 PM Tom_L: whatever they make as default plus the boot section? i dunno
04:53 PM rue_mohr: k, so, the only way of fitting it on a dvd would be to zero out all the unused space
04:53 PM Tom_L: i'll likely just use ssd for this
04:53 PM Tom_L: probably easier in the end
04:54 PM rue_mohr: ok, well figure out what to do and I can give you a hand
04:54 PM rue_mohr: copying a running linux drive to anohter drive attached to the system is easy
06:06 PM polprog: fridayyyyyy
06:07 PM polprog: i just put some leds, resistors, a display and a 14511 in a bag to give to a kid who is into electronics
06:07 PM polprog: also wrote some instructions
06:08 PM polprog: aandrew: i got the BDM communicatng with the 68hc12
06:08 PM polprog: i was playing with voip too
06:08 PM polprog: maybe ill set up something permanent
06:12 PM polprog: we get to pick up the EE lab kits next friday
06:12 PM polprog: im 90% sure we will be doing it in pairs since we have next to no time to do these labs
06:13 PM polprog: i cant imagine doing each lab twice
06:13 PM polprog: ill have to move stuff around to make space for 2 chairs at this bench
06:13 PM rue_mohr: it does not take half the time to do a lab if 2 people are doing it
06:13 PM polprog: yes
06:13 PM rue_mohr: typically the time goes to 175%
06:13 PM rue_mohr: maybe 133% if everything goes well
06:14 PM polprog: but thats still faster than having person A do the lab at their house on one thursday and person B the other thursday
06:14 PM polprog: im also curious how it will be carried out
06:14 PM rue_mohr: "you know what your doing, I'll watch"
06:14 PM rue_mohr: :)
06:14 PM polprog: lab assistant shouting at us^W^W^W directing us over Teams :v
06:15 PM polprog: i already carried out labs over youtube from this bench for 40 kids, i can deal with one student like me and a lab asissistant who can watch
06:15 PM polprog: :P
06:16 PM polprog: also... the (former) lab rule sheet: para 6: it's forbidden to modify the measured circuits
06:16 PM polprog: how am I supposed to learn anything then :^)
06:17 PM rue_mohr: what?
06:17 PM rue_mohr: did they pre-assemble the circuit?
06:18 PM polprog: i think the stationary labs have wooden boxes with terminals and a schematic drawn on the cover x_x
06:18 PM polprog: brought to you by people who hide DMMs behind plexiglass, with a hole to poke them on or off
06:19 PM polprog: i hope the remoteness will force the labs to be more.... lab-ish
06:19 PM polprog: i wonder if i should cover the Agilent scope, they might become a bit envious. Stationary lab has 20MHz Goldstars ;)
06:20 PM rue_mohr: hmm
06:20 PM MrTime: .msg
06:20 PM MrTime: oops
06:20 PM polprog: hi there
06:20 PM MrTime: hi I'm moon's step son
06:21 PM polprog: i figured out from the IP address :)
06:21 PM polprog: nice to meet ya
06:21 PM rue_mohr: .msg nickserv identify ruemohr mypassowrdisletmeinalreadyagaindamnit
06:21 PM MrTime: you too
06:21 PM rue_mohr: hi
06:21 PM MrTime: hi rue
06:26 PM MrTime: I understand how memory adresses work in computers now
06:47 PM MrTime: cls
06:49 PM polprog: thats cool :) good starting point
06:50 PM polprog: ive learnt a lot when playing with assembly on avrs
06:50 PM MrTime: thanks
06:50 PM polprog: even though i didnt write many programs
06:50 PM MrTime: huh
06:50 PM polprog: maybe like 5 different total haha
06:50 PM polprog: one was a state machine!
06:50 PM MrTime: whats a state machine?
06:51 PM polprog: i had a small attiny4148 board with a single, 7 segment display and 2 buttons
06:51 PM polprog: a state machine is..
06:51 PM polprog: uhh
06:51 PM polprog: it's a generalized concept of any machine or device
06:51 PM polprog: the idea is that you have states
06:51 PM MrTime: like 1 and 0?
06:51 PM polprog: there can be more
06:52 PM polprog: and you have inputs. And the states change based on the inputs
06:52 PM polprog: what's a good example
06:52 PM polprog: hmm. elevator i think?
06:52 PM polprog: elevator that goes between two floors
06:53 PM polprog: inputs are the buttons on each floor
06:53 PM polprog: and sensors (like doors closed sensor)
06:53 PM polprog: and the states are closing doors, opening doors, going up and going down
06:54 PM polprog: (we have twoo floors to make it simple. more floors would requre a more complex idea)
06:54 PM MrTime: k
06:54 PM polprog: so let's say the elevator is open, and on the ground floor
06:54 PM polprog: someone on the top floor presses the call button
06:55 PM polprog: that button would trigger the state change
06:55 PM polprog: it would change the state to "closing door" (cant ride open), then the signal from the door sensor would trigger the state change to "going up"
06:56 PM polprog: then the position sensor would change the state to "opening doors"
06:56 PM polprog: and the button inside the elevator would change the state to "closing doors" again, and the door sensor would change the state to "going down"
06:56 PM polprog: this is more complicated than i thought
06:56 PM polprog: :^)
06:57 PM MrTime: it's neat though
06:57 PM polprog: elevators are complicated. There is lots of safety mechanisms to prevent slicing you
06:57 PM MrTime: 0u0
06:57 PM polprog: the cool thing is
06:57 PM polprog: if you have the complete state machine diagram
06:57 PM polprog: you can implement it in any way you want
06:58 PM polprog: the elevator could be run by a rack of relays wired to do the logic
06:58 PM polprog: or a 6502 running a program forever
06:58 PM polprog: or a windows XP box running a basic program
06:58 PM polprog: or a mechanical disk that triggers a row of switches.
06:59 PM polprog: maybe a washing machine would be a simpler example
06:59 PM TermMoon: XD
07:00 PM polprog: what xD
07:00 PM polprog: im turning your stepson into a computer hacker dont interrupt me :v
07:00 PM polprog: im kidding ;)
07:00 PM MrTime: hah, would be fun though
07:01 PM MrTime: unttil I went to jail
07:01 PM TermMoon: Oh exuse me
07:01 PM MrTime: princess
07:01 PM TermMoon: polprog: no prob :)
07:01 PM polprog: you dont have to go to jail
07:01 PM polprog: just be a good person haha
07:02 PM TermMoon: he needs some other grown up influence
07:02 PM polprog: than me/us :o ?
07:02 PM TermMoon: than me
07:02 PM polprog: haha
07:04 PM MrTime: eh polprog wanna see a thing I made, or is your computer text only?
07:05 PM polprog: how do you know im not using a teletype
07:06 PM polprog: im kidding
07:06 PM MrTime: because dos exists too! lol
07:06 PM polprog: i have a graphical web browser here :)
07:07 PM MrTime: k here is the link then: https://webpageplusxii.wolram75.repl.co/index.html if you wanna check it out that is
07:09 PM Tom_L: A project made by MrTime. April 05-06 2020
07:10 PM durp: thats me
07:10 PM durp: oops
07:12 PM polprog: haha, nice
07:12 PM MrTime0: I broke it already
07:12 PM polprog: that looks better than what we had to do last year in uni on html basics :)
07:12 PM MrTime0: irssi
07:12 PM MrTime0: thanks
07:12 PM polprog: irssi is peculiar
07:13 PM MrTime0 is now known as MrTime
07:13 PM MrTime: their
07:13 PM polprog: ohh halo
07:13 PM TermMoon: there
07:14 PM TermMoon: kids :P
07:14 PM polprog: i still play it sometimes
07:14 PM MrTime: neat
07:15 PM MrTime: the first one?
07:15 PM polprog: halo CE on PC
07:15 PM MrTime: noice
07:15 PM polprog: i never had the 1st gen Xbox
07:15 PM polprog: dont think im super old tho
07:16 PM polprog: i started playing it like 2 years ago
07:16 PM polprog: :v
07:16 PM MrTime: I started playing it this year
07:17 PM polprog: i play it mostly because my laptop i use for uni probably cant run anything else
07:17 PM polprog: i also have all 3 quakes there
07:17 PM polprog: i didnt even install steam heh
07:18 PM polprog: and i have minecraft there too. because for some reason we play minecraft after classes to chill out
07:18 PM MrTime: maybe cause its not as bloody as doom
07:20 PM polprog: good point
07:20 PM polprog: maybe we should switch to doom
07:21 PM MrTime: I have the ultimate doom for windows 95
07:21 PM polprog: oh nice
07:21 PM polprog: i think i have the new old doom, ie the CD release that installs on modern windows and runs in DOSbox
07:21 PM MrTime: also have, unreal championship for the original xbox
07:21 PM polprog: i think i have the original doom somewhere
07:21 PM polprog: i def have Unreal Tournament
07:22 PM MrTime: noice
07:22 PM MrTime: do you have gmod on steam?
07:23 PM polprog: yeah
07:23 PM polprog: i havent played it since.. highschool i think
07:23 PM polprog: ive got steam on the PC that currently has the monitor unplugged
07:23 PM polprog: because i use the monitor with the laptop for uni stuff
07:23 PM * MrTime gets launched across map in bathtub
07:24 PM polprog: lol
07:24 PM MrTime: what kind of unix stuff?
07:24 PM polprog: university
07:24 PM polprog: i do unix too
07:24 PM MrTime: o
07:24 PM polprog: but i meant university :V
07:25 PM MrTime: that makes more sense
07:27 PM MrTime: is you laptops screen bad?
07:27 PM polprog: kinda
07:27 PM aandrew: polprog: nice, so the hardware's working for you now?
07:27 PM polprog: ive seen better screens
07:27 PM polprog: aandrew: yeah, seems like it
07:27 PM aandrew: awesome, very happy to hear it
07:27 PM polprog: i didnt blink a led yet but i can read and erase it
