12:47 AM rue_mohr: asdgil;jaxdtkl;jaxddjkl;jfg
12:53 AM rue_mohr: out of ability to asnwer questions
12:53 AM rue_mohr: damnit
12:53 AM rue_mohr: some of the quesiton that I should bave been ale to do fine I fcould NOT get the right answers for
12:53 AM rue_mohr: w t f
12:53 AM rue_mohr: to the point I cant answer anything
12:53 AM rue_mohr: I only have so much energy for answering questions
01:03 AM rue_mohr: I need to completely reset my brain
01:03 AM rue_mohr: I was reset when I started too
01:06 AM rue_mohr: the electrical problems just require understanding the circuit and knowing how to move between values
01:07 AM rue_mohr: the electrical code is a book thats completely erratic, thats the other topic
01:07 AM rue_mohr: and its all in legaleeze, they dont use real words
01:08 AM rue_mohr: yea something in the core of me is having a panic attack
01:08 AM rue_mohr: how the hell do I bring it down
01:09 AM rue_mohr: something procedural that will just work
01:09 AM rue_mohr: screw sorting
01:09 AM rue_mohr: maybe
01:09 AM rue_mohr: or taking stuff apart
01:09 AM rue_mohr: yea, I'll strip down some hard drive
01:09 AM rue_mohr: s
01:09 AM rue_mohr: ok
01:09 AM rue_mohr: atleast that wont make things worse
01:11 AM rue_shop1: and musci
08:42 AM polprog: https://polprog.net/rozne1/ircjunk/various/steppers.jpg
08:42 AM polprog: i got 6 steppers
08:42 AM polprog: and an eprom eraser
10:13 AM aandrew: morning
10:14 AM aandrew: polprog: those look like they came out of old floppy drives, at least judging from the thin metal "ribbon" attached to the rotor
10:19 AM polprog: yeah they did
10:19 AM polprog: from the 5.25" ones
10:23 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/motors/stepper1.jpg
10:28 AM aandrew: heh it seems we are all of a similar "vintage" who can immediately recognize such a thing
10:30 AM aandrew: this pvmove looks like it's sustaining 16MBps in/out (32MBps total)
10:30 AM aandrew: two different disk controllers makes sense I guess
10:31 AM aandrew: I want to get a tiny little jeweler's lathe
10:36 AM aandrew: the local used tool store has a Unimat DB200 which is really nice and has all the accessories, but he wants $700 for it which I think is crazy
10:36 AM polprog: i noticed similar ones branded teac in the 5.25" drives.
10:37 AM polprog: there arent branded but they have similar dimensions, feel and pinout
10:37 AM polprog: the guy i bought them told me he stripped about 200-300 5.25" drives back in the 90s-00s, when everyone was after the motors because the drives were useless. Now these drives are changing hands for $20 each
10:38 AM polprog: bought them from*
10:38 AM aandrew: the one in the case here is identical: https://www.hobby-machinist.com/threads/unimat-sl-db-200.4894/
10:38 AM aandrew: what do people want the old drives for?
10:39 AM polprog: retro builds i think
10:39 AM polprog: i doubt many people deal with data retrieval or archiving
10:39 AM polprog: s/with/in/
10:40 AM polprog: which is quite funny because 3.5" drives are almost 10x less
10:40 AM aandrew: interesting
10:40 AM polprog: that's at least how it is here
10:40 AM aandrew: I love the old systems but have zero interest in restoration or reliving the old days
10:41 AM polprog: i dont feel like reliving the old days, i dont have anything to relieve (im 20) ;)
10:41 AM polprog: but a ready built 486 with some high end (for the time) graphics card can be easily $100-$150 here
10:42 AM aandrew: damn you're literally less than half my age (44)
10:42 AM polprog: but these are prices for drooling impulse buyers :)
10:42 AM aandrew: really
10:42 AM polprog: i put these things together out of curiosity, i got my 486 box for free from my uncle ;)
10:42 AM aandrew: why are 486s so popular there?
10:42 AM polprog: i can buy cards for $2 each no matter what card it is
10:42 AM polprog: hard to say...
10:42 AM aandrew: are they just fast enough to be super inexpensive computers for people or something?
10:43 AM aandrew: I see your twitter feed full of installing old windows and such, surely they're not going online with these
10:43 AM polprog: no, no. anything below pentium 4 is unusable for computer work
10:43 AM aandrew: it seems you have a nice side gig going on though, a real niche
10:44 AM polprog: i think that at least here in central/eastern europe 486 happened to be on the market when the USSR fell
10:44 AM aandrew: ride that train for as long as it'll go I say!
10:45 AM polprog: suddenly the market opened and you could buy cheap taiwan computers which were 10 years ahead of what the USSR manufactured
10:45 AM polprog: so for many people who are 30-40 today the first systems were 486 or pentiums
10:46 AM polprog: of course, before that people were importing/smuggling stuff from the west, Amigas and the like but obviously the supply was pretty low
10:47 AM polprog: im sure people just wanna relieve their youth playing Deluxe Ski Jump on some DOS/Win 95 box
10:48 AM polprog: i dont really dabble much in real retro systems.. these windows XP rants were because i was trying to set up Codewarrior to program that HC12 you sent me :)
10:48 AM polprog: i got it working today ^_^
10:48 AM polprog: and that Compaq Evo im setting it up on is not *that* old yet, so I like the idea of keeping a windows XP machine in case i have to run some old software
10:49 AM polprog: i know gcc supports hc12 but i dont think there's linux support for that programmer you threw in
10:49 AM polprog: so ill try the original tools first
10:50 AM aandrew: rue_shop1: http://www.nstarsolutions.com/store/catalog/555-Etcetera-p-17000.html any interest in that? I can get the pro version
10:50 AM aandrew: oh nice job on the HC12 software
10:50 AM aandrew: gcc isn't great for those little ones, sdcc though might be a way better bet
10:51 AM polprog: sdcc can do only hc08
10:51 AM aandrew: wow really
10:51 AM polprog: but i had some good experience with stm8 under sdcc
10:51 AM polprog: and z80
10:51 AM aandrew: HC12/16 are in a really weird space then, but mind you there's avr-gcc so maybe not
10:52 AM polprog: i think i would aso go for sdcc if i was to attack the 87c51 i have
10:52 AM polprog: friend sent me a UV-erasabe one in DIP, i also have an atmel mcs51 compatible flash based one so maybe one rainy day i will blink a led with the venerable mcs-51
10:57 AM aandrew: nice
10:57 AM aandrew: if you're into 8051 you should look at the FX2LP, you have an 8051 with a 480Mbps USB2.0 engine on it
10:57 AM aandrew: and they're *CHEAP*
10:58 AM polprog: oooh
10:58 AM aandrew: $3 for full dev boards with all pins borken out to headers on Ali
10:58 AM polprog: yeah. i kinda want to get familiar with the basics of mcs-51 because it just pops up in the least expected places
10:58 AM polprog: just like pi
10:58 AM aandrew: yep they're buried in a lot of ASICs because they're free
10:58 AM polprog: $3?? :D
10:59 AM aandrew: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/593825502.html
10:59 AM aandrew: just first hit
10:59 AM aandrew: those boards work out of the box with sigrok and older versions of saleae Logic
10:59 AM aandrew: that's what I use 'em for
10:59 AM aandrew: they're disposable logic analyzer interfaces :-)
10:59 AM polprog: :P
11:00 AM aandrew: I don't have to worry about frying anything
11:01 AM polprog: awesome
11:01 AM polprog: ive gotta go watch the mech lectures
11:03 AM rue_mohr: ooo
11:04 AM rue_mohr: maybe those are a better avr replace, 8051 isn't going away
11:04 AM polprog: :)
11:04 AM polprog: i got some (hopefully) magnet wire
11:04 AM rue_mohr: 48Mhz, and... 2? cycles per instruction?
11:04 AM polprog: 0.1mm
11:04 AM polprog: actually
11:05 AM polprog: ill show you. secret santa from myself to me
11:09 AM polprog: https://polprog.net/rozne1/ircjunk/various/santa.jpg
11:10 AM polprog: eraser, kynar wire, magmet wire, fibreglass pen and that up there is a foldable 6 pocket pouch for tools
11:10 AM polprog: im not sure what to put in it yet
11:10 AM rue_mohr: mylar tape?
11:12 AM polprog: what?
11:13 AM rue_mohr: for transformers, right?
11:13 AM polprog: i dont have mylar tape
11:13 AM polprog: but yeah that wire was advertised as for transformers
11:14 AM aandrew: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89bQLGi4qjs interesting video. basically using a 3018 to rebuild itself into something sturdier for aluminum work
11:16 AM aandrew: there is very little left of the original 3018
11:16 AM rue_mohr: I had a dream I was at a garage sale at the wharf, and the guy selling stuff (had really high prices) had a bunch of geared stepper motors he'd mauled up
11:16 AM aandrew: I think it'd probably be a lot better use of time to use the 3018 for little things and CNCize my gigantic knee mill
11:17 AM polprog: what's a 3018?
11:17 AM aandrew: a cheapie CNC mill
11:17 AM polprog: ahh
11:17 AM aandrew: I'm looking because I bought one
11:17 AM aandrew: but this guy basically replaces everything (bigger steppers, bigger spindle, new rails, new everything really)
11:18 AM aandrew: basically $200 for the original 3018, and another $300 for the upgrade parts/materials, and a lot of time
11:18 AM aandrew: but a $500 CNC you can buy isn't as good as what he's built so I guess it's a good investment
11:19 AM aandrew: the video is a good walkthrough in the design and assembly process though so A+ for that
11:26 AM rue_mohr: CY7C68013A <<-- re those, have you programmed one?
11:27 AM aandrew: those are the FX2LPs, that's what you want
11:27 AM rue_mohr: k, I'm wondering about the dev chain
11:27 AM aandrew: they either read firmware from I2C or they wait in a USB bootlaoder and run from RAM
11:28 AM rue_mohr: iinteresting
11:28 AM rue_mohr: ok, header files and compiler?
11:28 AM aandrew: yep there is a config eeprom you put on them to give the vid/pid or, for your own stuff they come up with the default cypress vid/pid
11:28 AM aandrew: yep it's all there
11:28 AM aandrew: sdcc builds for them just fine
11:29 AM aandrew: check on github, there should be LOTS of references
11:29 AM rue_mohr: k
11:30 AM polprog: [0867:5309] Mohr And Company Certified Doodad Device
11:31 AM rue_mohr: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001845706798.html <-- :/ still cheaper
11:31 AM rue_mohr: awkward tho
11:33 AM rue_mohr: 6 minutes
11:33 AM rue_mohr: I should stop leaving my chips in mine for 2 horus
11:33 AM rue_mohr: oh x15mins?
11:34 AM polprog: yeah
11:34 AM polprog: i dont know the light power
11:35 AM polprog: but it erased the bigger ones in 15 mins okay (27c512)
11:35 AM aandrew: polprog: lol
11:35 AM aandrew: rue_shop1: yes, that is cheaper but is also 12Mbps tops, not 480
11:35 AM polprog: the 2732 took 30 mins to erase (there were some scarce 0-bits still after 15 mins)
11:35 AM aandrew: depends on what you're after. I prefer the STM32s to 8051 anyday but getting 480Mbps out of one is something you won't do for $3
11:50 AM rue_mohr: ah
12:05 PM aandrew: there aren't a lot of applications where you really NEED the bandwidth. data acquistion is one of 'em :-)
12:34 PM rue_mohr: https://twitter.com/DosFox1/status/1335285727735803905
12:35 PM rue_mohr: THAT is more than enough grounds to make sure I NEVER STOP writing errors like that.
12:36 PM polprog: hahaha yes!
12:51 PM rue_mohr: I think I'd like to create a huge shift register on the fpga
12:51 PM rue_mohr: maybe see just how crazy I can go
01:00 PM rue_mohr: yep thingiverse is falling apart
01:01 PM rue_mohr: maybe they should take to reaselling printers
01:01 PM Tom_L: the rest of the world is too
01:01 PM rue_mohr: I know everything on there is quite backed up, I'v seem copies of my posts everywehrer
01:01 PM rue_mohr: bots bots and more bots
01:56 PM TermMoon: :P
02:18 PM rue_mohr: TermMoon, you around?
03:10 PM polprog: aandrew: can i pm you?
03:27 PM aandrew: polprog: you (and anyone in this chan) never has to ask that
03:27 PM aandrew: just go ahead
03:29 PM polprog: :)
03:37 PM rue_mohr: anytime for me
03:48 PM Tom_L: never for me
04:31 PM polprog: :)
04:53 PM polprog: goodnight
04:54 PM Tom_L: later
07:41 PM rue_mohr: so much reading and looking things up
07:43 PM Tom_L: howz it goin?
07:49 PM rue_mohr: I'm almost caught up to tuesday
07:49 PM rue_mohr: its like eating crackers for a week straight
07:49 PM rue_mohr: YOU JUST WANT SOMETHING ELSE
07:52 PM Tom_L: hah
08:05 PM aandrew: blah
08:05 PM aandrew: how is it I have two 4-way switches and zero 3-way
09:06 PM rue_mohr: heh
09:07 PM rue_mohr: just use a 4 way
09:07 PM rue_mohr: without the 1 lead
09:07 PM rue_mohr: I keep a few 4 way around for motor reversing
11:06 PM rue_mohr: that might be a night for me
11:06 PM rue_mohr: I got half my answers wrong today casue I didn't understand the temp derating rules properly
11:06 PM rue_mohr: BUT it looks like they changed them since I was last in school
11:22 PM Tom_L: changed the rules!! how dare them!
