08:39 AM rue_mohr: yup
08:46 AM rue_mohr: that has a filter...
09:43 AM aandrew: rue_mohr: filter on the intake or filter around the internal vacuum
10:02 AM rue_mohr: the inside where the filter goes...
10:02 AM rue_mohr: inside the bucket...
03:47 PM Tom_L: this afternoon's project: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Music_Desk_rail.jpg
05:23 PM rue_mohr: ooo
05:24 PM rue_mohr: it was faulty from the start
07:34 PM aandrew: nice. I'm waiting for a unit to put this little CNC on so I can enclose it to keep mess to a minimum. This is coming: https://www.homedepot.ca/product/gladiator-gladiator-30-inch-x-15-inch-x-60-inch-shelving-unit-4-shelves/1001124533
07:35 PM aandrew: I figure if I put it on an inner shelf, all walls/fllor but the front MDF with neoprene foam to isolate it, then a hinged plexiglass door with magnets maybe
07:36 PM aandrew: port out the side for a vacuum, plumbing for air and maybe coolant (probably thinking way too hard about a little 3018) then it should be relatively quiet
07:37 PM aandrew: keep it out in the garage since no matter what I do it'll still be noisy and make a lot of mess
07:43 PM Tom_L: sams has heavy shelving like that
07:44 PM aandrew: yeah there's some nice industrial shelving at costco (which I think is canadian sams) but it's pricier than this
07:44 PM aandrew: I want to get some from a corporate auction or something
07:44 PM Tom_L: we've got costco here as well
07:44 PM aandrew: remember that's canuckbucks, so about $75-$80 in freedom units
07:55 PM aandrew: what is the difference between sam's club and costco?
09:54 PM Tom_L: i like sams better
09:54 PM Tom_L: costco seems to carry alot more 'specialty' foods
09:55 PM Tom_L: i got a costco business membership when they first opened here and never renewed it
10:00 PM aandrew: *nods* I have the business membership too, this year my cashback is like $250
10:00 PM aandrew: that is scary
11:11 PM rue_mohr: aandrew, the current price for plexi is about $1000/foot^2
11:11 PM rue_mohr: (covid)
11:13 PM rue_mohr: so, I got 10 tiny26 from china
11:13 PM rue_mohr: one of them is missing a leg...
11:13 PM rue_mohr: there were just thrown in a bag
11:13 PM rue_mohr: the other 9 flash ok
11:16 PM rue_mohr: got 15 DAC0808 too
11:16 PM rue_mohr: non-antistatic bag...
11:16 PM rue_mohr: loose
11:17 PM rue_mohr: grr
11:28 PM aandrew: rue_mohr: no shit?
11:29 PM aandrew: I bought some from fastenal and it wasn't near that dear, but mind you I need to buy some thicker stuff now
11:30 PM aandrew: my range hood control board is going bonkers - fan changes speeds, on off high med low etc etc. figured I'd take it apart and clean it before ordering a replacement
11:30 PM aandrew: taking it apart to GET to the hood was insane
11:30 PM aandrew: and in the end it's the shittiest 2 layer garbage board I've ever seen with 8 pushbuttons, 8 blue LEDs, a thermistor and a bunch of resistors
11:30 PM aandrew: driven by a PIC16F822 I think it was
11:31 PM aandrew: anyway cleaned the shit out of it, threw it in the ultrasonic, didn't change a thing
11:31 PM aandrew: resoldered all the joints, replaced the only cap on it (10uF electrolytic): no change
11:31 PM aandrew: I can't believe I'm gonna end up spending like $250 for another piece of shit board
11:32 PM aandrew: one last thing I'll try is to see if I can read teh PIC and if so I'll try flashing a new one
11:32 PM aandrew: I should throw a scope on the power rail though too (it's powered from another board) but I very much doubt that's the issue
11:35 PM rue_shop1: bet its a cap
11:35 PM rue_shop1: oh
11:35 PM rue_shop1: PICs are SUPER sensitive to noise
11:36 PM rue_shop1: one of the reasons I gave up on them
11:36 PM rue_shop1: aandrew, well
11:36 PM rue_shop1: maybe ponder what it does, may not take you more than a day to just change out the pic for an stm32
11:36 PM rue_shop1: blue pill
11:36 PM rue_shop1: bit of wire bodging
11:36 PM aandrew: I had a half a mind to just replace the cpu with a little stm32, it's not like it's a crazy difficult board or software, but then I remembered that I'm far better paying for the damn thing and working for the money instead but this is about the principle, dammit
11:37 PM aandrew: haha
11:37 PM aandrew: I was just writing that
11:37 PM rue_shop1: heh
11:37 PM aandrew: that's what I *WANT* to do
11:37 PM rue_shop1: I suppose the question (challange) is, can you do it within $250 of time?
11:38 PM aandrew: no, I don't think I can
11:38 PM aandrew: that's just it
11:38 PM rue_shop1: how old is it?
11:38 PM aandrew: reversing the pinout from this board to the actual relay board would take about 45m alone
11:38 PM rue_shop1: whaa?
11:38 PM aandrew: and I tend to write software slowly because I'm a perfectionist
11:38 PM rue_shop1: just use a beep meter
11:38 PM rue_shop1: ok ok , how old is the fan
11:39 PM aandrew: rue_shop1: yes. it's not the connector is difficult or has a lot of pins (I think there's 10 or 12 pins there) but it's extremely awkward to work on it when it's connected
11:39 PM aandrew: 4 years
11:39 PM aandrew: couple BIG blowers
11:39 PM rue_shop1: ok, so this fans maintenance cost is more than $250/4yrs
11:39 PM rue_shop1: cause, the motor is next
11:39 PM rue_shop1: or its run cap
11:39 PM aandrew: yeah that's my next worry
11:40 PM aandrew: although it's showing absoltuely zero signs of trouble
11:40 PM rue_shop1: which along isn't that much, but with the extra $250/4yrs
11:40 PM aandrew: (quickly looks for something wooden to knock on)
11:40 PM rue_shop1: how long do you anticipate otherwise having the fan
11:40 PM rue_shop1: 15 yrs?
11:40 PM aandrew: I should show you a pic of the motors
11:40 PM aandrew: I'd hope it'll last forever to be honest
11:40 PM rue_shop1: 25 yrs?
11:40 PM aandrew: we dont' stress it, the fans are almost always on low
11:41 PM aandrew: I'd say reasonably? 10-15y
11:41 PM aandrew: I'd be very happy if it lasted that long (same with the stove). dishwasher will probably be gone before then
11:41 PM rue_shop1: thats $1000 in controllers
11:41 PM aandrew: assuming this isn't just an infant failure
11:41 PM rue_shop1: not accounting for infaltion
11:41 PM aandrew: I mean the board is not greasy like the rest of the range hood, they actually protected it quite well
11:42 PM aandrew: I also held the board and flexed/shook/poked at it while it was running to see if I could evoke a different behaviour
11:42 PM rue_shop1: if you put a day into a controller, you have trimmed about $1000 off the cost of the fan over its operating lifetime
11:42 PM aandrew: yeah, the math is good
11:42 PM * rue_shop1 drums his fingers and waits for the sale...
11:43 PM rue_shop1: :D
11:43 PM aandrew: hahaha
11:43 PM rue_shop1: *not accounting for inflation*
11:43 PM aandrew: are any of you doing the advent of code?
11:43 PM rue_shop1: no...
11:43 PM aandrew: https://adventofcode.com/
11:43 PM aandrew: fun little puzzles so far, two per day
11:44 PM aandrew: I'm writing them in C becuase it's the only language I'm competent at
11:44 PM rue_shop1: I'm in severe negative time right now
11:44 PM aandrew: so am I, I've got three contracts with another coming online very soon and I'm at zero motivation to do any of them
11:44 PM aandrew: this is gonna bite me in the ass really fucking fast
11:44 PM rue_shop1: big ones?
11:45 PM aandrew: in fact this advent of code is literally the only real programmign I've done in two months
11:45 PM rue_shop1: electronics, programming?
11:45 PM aandrew: yes
11:45 PM rue_shop1: I just found a M6847 :)
11:45 PM aandrew: these are mostly software but I have to also debug/poke at/evaluate hardware
11:45 PM aandrew: what's an M6847?
11:45 PM rue_shop1: if I get a chance I'd like to hook it up like that guy did
11:45 PM rue_shop1: its a video chip
11:45 PM aandrew: aha
11:46 PM rue_shop1: with no mcu you can get it to display a screen of characters
11:46 PM aandrew: interesting
11:46 PM rue_shop1: oh I'm a minute late for bed...
11:46 PM rue_shop1: keep an eye on twitter :)
11:46 PM rue_shop1: I'm 6 _books_ of questions behind at this point
11:46 PM aandrew: oh dear
11:46 PM aandrew: that sounds bad bad
11:46 PM rue_shop1: I did 12 hours of school today
11:47 PM rue_shop1: well I need to do the online test quizes too
11:47 PM aandrew: you can't bullshit your way past assignments like I can about not quite yet being read to submit the patch release
11:47 PM aandrew: patch request
11:47 PM aandrew: pull request dammit
11:55 PM rue_mohr: there were 2 assignments and I got thru those
11:55 PM rue_mohr: but to pass I need to get all the homework questions mastered
11:56 PM rue_mohr: week before last there I burned out a lot of 2N7000 working on the power supply
11:56 PM rue_mohr: the lvdt was lookin pretty good, needed a ~150khz osc
11:57 PM rue_mohr: not sure how stable it needs to be, but its right in the range of the power converter now
11:57 PM rue_mohr: so I'm pondering mixing them
11:57 PM rue_mohr: Its an armstrong oscillator, I dont know if I can make its freq stable
11:57 PM rue_mohr: (in the slightest)
11:58 PM rue_mohr: then again, I think I have quite a margin
