12:17 AM zhanx_: Ok new laptop
12:29 AM zhanx_ is now known as zhanx
12:29 AM zhanx: Laptop has a touch screen
12:38 AM rue_mohr: ok
12:38 AM rue_mohr: it seems all new laptops have touchscreen
12:38 AM rue_mohr: its annoying as all hell
12:38 AM rue_mohr: you cant touch the screen without screwing something up
12:39 AM zhanx: I don't need a touch screen
12:39 AM rue_mohr: computer != tablet
12:39 AM zhanx: I dont want finger prints on it
12:40 AM zhanx: Well I can't put off pouring the concrete for the print base much longer now
12:40 AM rue_mohr: oh
12:40 AM rue_mohr: what you been doing in the meantime then?
12:41 AM zhanx: Wiring and network stuff for the house ( and fencing ugh)
12:41 AM zhanx: I have cat5 and 6 everywhere
12:41 AM rue_mohr: k
12:42 AM zhanx: My underground wire came in so I need to run that also
12:42 AM zhanx: That will not be fun
12:43 AM zhanx: It's packed with grease like normal which I hate
12:43 AM rue_mohr: I like the underground stuff that isn't grease packed
12:43 AM rue_mohr: tho we had some that was packed with elephant snot
12:43 AM rue_mohr: anything is better than that stuff was
12:43 AM zhanx: It was cheaper for the packed crap
12:44 AM rue_mohr: its good stuff, but LOTS of papertowels to clean off to terminate
12:44 AM zhanx: Need to trench it and run plumbing and electrical at the same time
12:44 AM zhanx: Yep
12:44 AM rue_mohr: did you jkeep enough funds to get a snall digger?
12:45 AM zhanx: I got in all the water proof boxes and yes I did
12:45 AM rue_mohr: cheaper to buy and sell than rent
12:45 AM zhanx: Need funds for the conduit
12:45 AM zhanx: 100 a day to rent
12:46 AM rue_mohr: I doubt depretiation could be more
12:46 AM zhanx: Rent use forget about it and not have to deal with selling it
12:59 AM zhanx: This laptop is not playing nice with Linux
01:05 AM zhanx: Well it's installing now
01:06 AM rue_mohr: my lesson last time was to make sure the damn thing works properly before wiping windows off
01:06 AM rue_mohr: 3 faulty motherbaords
01:06 AM zhanx: Secure boot was on
01:06 AM rue_mohr: never doing a lenovo again
01:06 AM zhanx: This is an Acer
01:08 AM rue_mohr: so
01:08 AM rue_mohr: I was in the basement and found a gearbox
01:09 AM rue_mohr: like the ones I'm looking for for the cnc
01:09 AM zhanx: Nice
01:09 AM rue_mohr: I had a thought tho
01:09 AM rue_mohr: maybe I already have everything I'll ever need
01:09 AM rue_mohr: casue I completely forgot I had that gearbox
01:09 AM zhanx: I found what I think is a corn grinder
01:09 AM rue_mohr: I think I outgrew my database size
01:10 AM zhanx: Perhaps
01:10 AM rue_mohr: corn grinder?
01:10 AM rue_mohr: big or small machine?
01:10 AM zhanx: It's al large red bin to a really really old plate grinder it's all home made
01:11 AM rue_mohr: cool
01:11 AM zhanx: Electric motor is from the 50's
01:11 AM zhanx: 3 phase
01:11 AM rue_mohr: hah
01:11 AM rue_mohr: resistor starter?
01:12 AM zhanx: No guards or safety stuff
01:12 AM zhanx: Yep
01:12 AM rue_mohr: darwin
01:12 AM rue_mohr: it doen't take long being in australia to realize stupid people just die
01:13 AM zhanx: Which I am ok with
01:13 AM rue_mohr: yep
01:13 AM zhanx: Oh it's moving no touch
01:13 AM rue_mohr: so, did the motor have a starter?
01:14 AM rue_mohr: if its big enough it wouldn't be hard-across-line
01:14 AM zhanx: Still in the basement/cellar
01:14 AM rue_mohr: cool
01:14 AM rue_mohr: hey I got that spark plug in
01:14 AM zhanx: I was working on cabling etc
01:14 AM rue_mohr: from 14 to 18mm
01:14 AM zhanx: Nice
01:14 AM rue_mohr: and it runs!
01:15 AM zhanx: All the free but won't run tillers and lawn mower stuff I got
01:15 AM rue_mohr: it would be nice if it ran for a while, its been a lot of work
01:15 AM zhanx: Either bad gas or a spark plug got it running
01:15 AM rue_mohr: :)
01:15 AM rue_mohr: I borrowed this off a buddy, he said he kinda doesn't want it back
01:16 AM zhanx: I spent 15 in gas to get it 5 in parts
01:16 AM zhanx: Then like 8 bucks to fill them
01:16 AM rue_mohr: I needed a tap for the larger 18mm plug
01:16 AM rue_mohr: borrowed it from his dad
01:16 AM rue_mohr: he listed all the chippers they have...
01:16 AM zhanx: I need to review your mower again
01:17 AM rue_mohr: the robot one?
01:17 AM zhanx: I have a electric one
01:17 AM zhanx: Yes
01:17 AM zhanx: But not now it's dry and dead here
01:17 AM rue_mohr: want to pi on w/ python?
01:17 AM rue_mohr: want to pi one w/ python?
01:17 AM zhanx: Not sure yet I have like 8 months to care
01:18 AM rue_mohr: yep
01:18 AM rue_mohr: my big cnc needs a z axis
01:18 AM rue_mohr: I forgot my plan again
01:18 AM zhanx: I am looking for windows from sliding doors
01:19 AM rue_mohr: new greenhouse?
01:19 AM zhanx: Gonna grease board them
01:19 AM rue_mohr: ?
01:19 AM zhanx: Aka paint the back white
01:19 AM rue_mohr: ??
01:19 AM zhanx: Mount them and free or really cheap boards to work with
01:19 AM rue_mohr: diffusion?
01:20 AM zhanx: Draw on them and write notes
01:20 AM rue_mohr: oh
01:20 AM rue_mohr: the shadows are annoying
01:21 AM zhanx: Plus the back light does help with diffusion
01:21 AM zhanx: Not to me
01:21 AM rue_mohr: maye thats the trick to the shadow problem
01:22 AM zhanx: I paint white then gray and backlight
01:22 AM rue_mohr: grey to remove texture/
01:22 AM rue_mohr: ?
01:22 AM zhanx: Yes
01:23 AM zhanx: Mind you the front is plain glass
01:25 AM rue_mohr: 24V / 256 = 0.094V
01:25 AM rue_mohr: aka, for a bench supply, 8 bits over 24V is JUST FINE
01:26 AM * zhanx waits for the smoke
01:26 AM rue_mohr: so, can I get myself to do a linear supply?
01:27 AM rue_mohr: my current supply is 24V 1A
01:27 AM rue_mohr: the 1A is REALLY ANNOYING
01:27 AM rue_mohr: (its current and voltage adjustable)
01:27 AM rue_mohr: every time I try to do this supply I go into feature runaway
01:28 AM rue_mohr: 11:30
01:28 AM rue_mohr: maybe I should sleep
01:28 AM zhanx: Not buying anything till the shop is setup
01:28 AM rue_mohr: I need to use up stuff I have
01:31 AM rue_mohr: hey what smells like gas and burns like gas but is used as a gearbox oil?
01:32 AM zhanx: Old gas but really old old 10w
01:32 AM rue_mohr: ?!
01:32 AM rue_mohr: this could be old old
01:33 AM rue_mohr: well....
01:33 AM rue_mohr: 70's +
01:33 AM rue_mohr: its a louver actuator
01:33 AM rue_mohr: was gonna make it into a generic gearbox
01:33 AM rue_mohr: and its was filled with "gas"
01:34 AM rue_mohr: (with an electric motor in there)
01:34 AM rue_mohr: turns out, the main output gear isn't fully toothed
01:34 AM zhanx: Aka turpimtine or however it's spelled
01:34 AM rue_mohr: and it would be quite a bit of effort to re-motor it with a DC
01:35 AM rue_mohr: is turpintine 10w?
01:35 AM zhanx: No but as it ages it breaks down for the old oil
01:35 AM rue_mohr: ah
01:35 AM rue_mohr: huh
01:36 AM zhanx: If you remember back in the 60 you changed oil on cars every 6 months even if you didn't drive them
01:36 AM rue_mohr: seems insane to have an electric motor in a pool of gas
01:37 AM zhanx: Remember oil has changed over the years
01:38 AM rue_mohr: I dont know the history
01:38 AM zhanx: It's better now than , it was back then
01:39 AM zhanx: Ok let's see how first Ubuntu boot goes after install
01:41 AM rue_shop1: its getting messy
01:41 AM rue_shop1: back in my day you were bombarded with a bunch of stuff you didn't need, but you didn't know it was installed either
05:25 AM polprog: rue_shop1: https://www.reddit.com/r/electronics/comments/i2mqub/wirewrapping_the_forgotten_craft_look_at_this/
05:25 AM polprog: that FriendlyWire guy....
05:25 AM polprog: fiendly wire
09:44 AM rue_mohr: yep, the comments yesterday were musing
09:45 AM rue_mohr: everyone always looks over the FSM tho
09:45 AM rue_mohr: *sigh*
09:45 AM Tom_L: mmm
09:46 AM Tom_L: ok now that the caliper box is done i can take the vise off and mount the rotary head
09:46 AM rue_mohr: thanks polprog :)
09:46 AM polprog: :)
09:47 AM Tom_L: looked it over a little yesterday... it's china quality
09:47 AM Tom_L: but will serve it's purpose
09:49 AM rue_mohr: polprog, some of the wraps are a bit shy, I had the tail break off in the tool, some I redid and some I didn't worry about
09:49 AM rue_mohr: my wrap tool is an old radio shack one
09:49 AM rue_mohr: I think it was like $10
09:49 AM Tom_L: do those work ok?
09:49 AM Tom_L: never done wire wrap
09:49 AM rue_mohr: yes
09:49 AM Tom_L: wonder about the connection points
09:49 AM rue_mohr: bit tressed on header pins
09:49 AM rue_mohr: wire wrap pins are a bit smaller
09:50 AM polprog: i sometimes use wire wrap like technique to fix the kynar wires for soldering
09:50 AM polprog: was thinking i should make a tool for that
09:50 AM rue_mohr: I was going to buy one for #22, but their like $170
09:50 AM Tom_L: not much happening today so i'll be in the shop messin a good part of the day
09:50 AM rue_mohr: Tom_L, we have a cool day here, how about you there?
09:51 AM polprog: #22?
09:51 AM Tom_L: started off around 60ish
09:51 AM Tom_L: 80ish for the high
09:51 AM rue_mohr: polprog, cat5/6 guage
09:51 AM polprog: ah
12:11 PM polprog: ive read your fsmflash tutorial. impressive hackery ;p
12:26 PM aandrew: https://imgur.com/NgYlhnE <-- my latest creation, sending it and the 15ch temp sensor out for fab
12:27 PM aandrew: https://imgur.com/a/f6Q1m85 is the 15ch temp sensor
12:27 PM aandrew: the idea is a fairly fast (dozens of ksps if not hundreds) temp sensor array to detect a "wave"
12:28 PM polprog: neat, cant wait to see it working ;)
12:29 PM aandrew: those SOT-563 transistor packages should also accept an 0201 thermistor across the pads if the transistors end up being too tempermental
12:30 PM polprog: looking at PALASM4 dos software
12:30 PM polprog: ill probably use the linux version of palasm but its nice to have a backup toolchain
12:30 PM aandrew: the flow sensor is interesting, rue took a quick look at it, it's all analog (the IC is just a dual comparator)
12:30 PM aandrew: palasm4 sounds real familiar
12:31 PM polprog: what is it comparing? (whats on the 6 pin peninsula?)
12:31 PM polprog: http://www.s100computers.com/My%20System%20Pages/ISA%20to%20S100%20Bus/Intro%20To%20GALs.htm
12:32 PM aandrew: the flow sensor works off of King's Law - the two transistors are in the same airstream and one is kept about 100mV above the other
12:32 PM polprog: i cant find anything about a Kings Law
12:32 PM polprog: i guess it has something to do with power dissipation?
12:35 PM polprog: how does it work?
12:37 PM aandrew: yes, power dissipation changes with the square of airspeed
12:38 PM polprog: clever
01:02 PM aandrew: yeah, not my design so I can't take credit :-)
01:06 PM aandrew: I kind of rediscovered others' work
02:47 PM rue_shop1: polprog, which tutorial?
02:47 PM polprog: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tutorials/elex/fsmflash/main.html
02:48 PM rue_shop1: I have a whole bunch of microphones from office phones I stripped down, I might try an array thing like that
02:48 PM rue_shop1: oh :)
02:48 PM polprog: make a phase array :)
02:49 PM rue_shop1: polprog, so, do you get the fsm thing?
02:49 PM polprog: i think
02:50 PM rue_shop1: again, sad application, its just in a static loop
02:50 PM polprog: yes, but with a small modification it can respond to external inputs
02:50 PM polprog: just route the input to one address line
02:50 PM rue_shop1: totally
02:50 PM polprog: \o/
02:50 PM rue_shop1: the PAL thing is ideal for them
02:50 PM rue_shop1: did you find the dos asembler?
02:51 PM polprog: yes, i nearly got it running in vbox
02:51 PM polprog: screw software that just doenst run out of *any* directory
02:51 PM rue_shop1: aandrew, looks like the airflow is comming along, have you had a chance to test it w/flow?
02:51 PM rue_shop1: its dos software you cant just dump into a directory?
02:52 PM polprog: no, it neds to have its own autexec bat config
02:52 PM rue_shop1: huh
02:52 PM rue_shop1: paths and things?
02:52 PM polprog: sets some environment
02:52 PM polprog: yeah
02:52 PM polprog: variables
02:52 PM polprog: hacker software just runs [tm]
02:52 PM polprog: off usb, floppy, ramsidk whatever
02:52 PM rue_shop1: can you img the vbox when you get it going?
02:52 PM * polprog looks at hiew
02:52 PM polprog: sure
02:52 PM rue_shop1: I presume your using like 6.22?
02:53 PM polprog: yeah, it is a weird setum. my live dos image is mounted as A:, and there is a shared virtual disk i use to transfer files in and out
02:53 PM polprog: a 500MB vmdk that is connected both to the dos machine and a winXP machine
02:53 PM polprog: the winXP uses guest additions to transfer files in and out
02:54 PM polprog: so... i had to unpack that palasm4 distribution on the real system, copy it to the vm share directory
02:54 PM polprog: inside XP copy that to the E: drive in XP, shut off XP
02:54 PM polprog: boot dos machine...
02:55 PM polprog: ill boot it up, fix up the autoexec
02:55 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Assembly/Final/Vise_parts/Rotary1.jpg
02:56 PM polprog: actually.. ill try to install dos on a smaller virtual disk
02:57 PM Tom_L: i cut a hex on some brass for the heck of it to try it out
03:03 PM aandrew: rue_shop1: nah, since making the breadboard design I haven't even looked at it, but I have that 15ch temp sensor I need so I quickly did up that flow sensor layout as well ot get them built at the same time
03:03 PM aandrew: they're both just 2L designs and my local board shop can do them without farming them out
03:03 PM aandrew: the 4+L stuff they farm out to Germany
03:07 PM aandrew: the stm32 let me down on the adc front though
03:08 PM aandrew: VREF must be >=2V, I was hoping I could go down in the 1-1.5V range, get moar bits
03:09 PM aandrew: but the current source is (shoudl be) fairly programmable, I have a PWM-driven NPN that I can use to "wick away" some of hte current in order to adjust the drop across those transistors
03:10 PM aandrew: and like I mentioned before, I can replace all the sense transistors with 0201 thermistors and then I can program the iref to put the vout anywhere i want really
03:10 PM aandrew: so 2.048V FS isn't an issue
03:17 PM polprog: ok, got it on a "clean" 6.22 install with some goodies
03:17 PM polprog: the vdi file is 14MB
03:19 PM rue_shop1: aandrew, hmm, didn't know that
03:19 PM aandrew: VMs are awesome for this kind of thing polprog
03:19 PM polprog: wait.. PALasm does GALs or not
03:19 PM rue_shop1: Tom_L, heh nice, but how much use is it if its not motorized?
03:19 PM polprog: or was it GALASM
03:20 PM polprog: ugh
03:20 PM rue_shop1: Tom_L, you starting to push the height limit on that yet?
03:20 PM polprog: ok, it supports "MACH" devices, so GALs
03:21 PM rue_shop1: this gets more interesting as you go
03:21 PM polprog: rue_shop1: https://polprog.net/rozne1/ircjunk/gal/
03:21 PM rue_shop1: and we can use other stuff to write them with available hardware?
03:21 PM rue_shop1: whats that one contain then?
03:22 PM polprog: it has palasm4 v1.5
03:22 PM polprog: which apparently is freeware now
03:22 PM polprog: good
03:24 PM polprog: hmm, it errors out on some stuff
03:24 PM polprog: im sure i installed all of it
03:26 PM polprog: it cant find ED.EXE but the installer reports it instalss okay
03:28 PM Tom_L: rue_shop1, it's not much higher center than the vise top
03:28 PM Tom_L: about the sam
03:28 PM Tom_L: e
03:29 PM polprog: ok, it needs to have the editor set up
03:31 PM Tom_L: rue_shop1, since the cad cam doesn't support full 5 axis but indexing i figured i'd be as well off indexing manually
03:32 PM Tom_L: and i don't have a post set up for it anyway
03:32 PM Tom_L: i noticed a couple examples but haven't tested any
03:33 PM polprog: ughrh
03:33 PM polprog: this is for PALs
03:33 PM polprog: not GALs
03:33 PM polprog: still, useful
03:33 PM Tom_L: gals don't make good pals
03:33 PM Tom_L: :)
03:34 PM polprog: https://polprog.net/rozne1/ircjunk/gal/editor.png
03:34 PM aandrew: lo
03:34 PM aandrew: lol
03:34 PM polprog: lol... but hey i learnt the dos "sys" command
03:34 PM polprog: to replicate dos :D
03:34 PM Tom_L: yep
03:35 PM Tom_L: sys C: copies the boot up stuff over
03:35 PM Tom_L: you don't know dos?
03:35 PM Tom_L: i grew up on it
03:35 PM polprog: i grew up on XP
03:35 PM polprog: i have a lot of catching up to do, still
03:35 PM Tom_L: what you doin in dos?
03:36 PM Tom_L: programming those chips?
03:36 PM polprog: wait, it supports GALs, just called PALCE
03:36 PM polprog: right now messing with it in virtualbox, im on holidays
03:36 PM polprog: but yes, the end goal is to have a way to program GALs
03:36 PM polprog: or rather, a backup way to do so
03:37 PM polprog: ill be probably using galasm on linux for that
03:37 PM polprog: http://www.s100computers.com/Software%20Folder/GALs/Intro%20To%20GALs.htm this is where i got palasm from
03:38 PM Tom_L: yeah i think i had a mb that had those
03:38 PM Tom_L: for some reason i had a spare set
03:38 PM polprog: spare set of what?
03:38 PM polprog: ive seen PALCE* devices here and there
03:38 PM Tom_L: either pal or gal
03:38 PM polprog: https://groups.google.com/d/msg/comp.lang.vhdl/l-75JBoUU4M/nB_0wVUtE1MJ
03:38 PM Tom_L: they were something like 20pin dip or so
03:38 PM Tom_L: narrow
03:39 PM polprog: allright.. catch you later
03:39 PM Tom_L: bye
03:39 PM polprog: rue_shop1: check if that vdi boots on a real disk (i think qemu-img can covert to raw), im curious if the transplant works ;)
05:19 PM tiwake: ShopMoon: why u poke me?
05:22 PM Tom_L: he wondered if you were real
05:24 PM tiwake: no
05:24 PM Tom_L: neither is he
08:16 PM rue_mohr: polprog, ah, I was going to ask
08:17 PM ShopMoon: tiwake: I poke allot ;)
09:31 PM Tom_L: first tests: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/rotary/RotaryTest1.jpg
09:31 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/rotary/RotaryTest2.jpg
