12:17 AM rue_shop1: it should just make that
12:22 AM rue_shop1: dont do make install,
12:22 AM rue_shop1: Tom_L, try make modules_install
12:47 AM zhanx_ is now known as zhanx
02:06 AM zhanx: ok printing a 2dof laser pointing toy for the cats
02:55 AM rue_shop1: mhm
02:55 AM rue_shop1: my cats would just ignore it
02:55 AM rue_shop1: there is soemthing about moving it yourself that they like better,
02:55 AM rue_shop1: so was my experience
02:56 AM rue_shop1: I was trying to use up an old apple IIe
03:00 AM zhanx: rue_shop1, check #robotics
07:46 AM Tom_L: ok try again
07:47 AM Tom_L: i'm also doing a fresh buster install on another test pc
09:19 AM Tom_L: ok i booted into 4.19.114 but not rtai yet
09:33 AM Tom_L: added patches and rebuilding
12:07 PM rue_mohr: k
12:09 PM Tom_dev: checking for Linux source tree... configure: error: You must supply an absolute path to --with-linux-dir.
12:09 PM Tom_dev: Error running configure.
12:09 PM Tom_L: where is it?
01:51 PM rue_mohr: that is not an error that should ever happen
01:51 PM rue_mohr: make is supposed to ask or autofix anything needed
01:51 PM rue_mohr: this is a new machine?
01:53 PM rue_mohr: it would help if I knew what commmand you did that said that, was it install?
02:15 PM Tom_L: i'm about to give up on it
02:15 PM Tom_L: that was the command to make the deb package
02:18 PM Tom_L: i stopped on it for a while
02:19 PM Tom_L: while i was working on that, i did a fresh buster install on another test pc and grabbed all the kernel stuff i think i need for it so i can start fresh on it
02:43 PM rue_mohr: oh
02:43 PM rue_mohr: why are you making a deb package?
02:44 PM Tom_L: just following those directions thru to the end
03:12 PM Tom_L: on the fresh install i want to note all the libs i install to make the kernel build work
03:24 PM rue_mohr: you do not need to build a debian package to install a kernel
03:24 PM rue_mohr: thats completely pointless
03:24 PM Tom_L: agreed
03:25 PM Tom_L: so i'll figure out what works and write it down but i want to keep track
03:26 PM Tom_L: i actually think i may have gotten off on the wrong page building. too many windows open
03:27 PM rue_mohr: ok...
03:27 PM Tom_L: it might be best to start again
03:27 PM Tom_L: i think i muffed it up
03:30 PM Tom_L: i can boot from the new kernel though, just not rtai yet
03:43 PM rue_mohr: once you get the normal base kernel working, you shouldn't have problems with the modified kernel on the same system
03:44 PM Tom_L: yeah
03:45 PM Tom_L: is it necessary to boot into the new base kernel before applying patches?
03:46 PM Tom_L: oh also do you have somewhat of a list of stuff like build-essentials etc?
03:50 PM rue_shop1: the patches are part of the kernel soruce
03:50 PM rue_shop1: you have to build them in
03:51 PM rue_shop1: no list
03:51 PM rue_shop1: I figure it out on the fly
03:57 PM Tom_L: yeah sometimes it asks for something that may be in some lib though and i dunno the name of the lib
06:24 PM rue_mohr: for the normal kernel, the apt-get build-dep linux
06:25 PM rue_mohr: should be the main thing I think
06:27 PM Tom_dev: that added a page full of installs
06:27 PM rue_mohr: you didn't redo that eh?
06:27 PM rue_mohr: was it not compiling again?
06:28 PM Tom_dev: 154 packages...
06:29 PM Tom_dev: this is on the new one
06:29 PM Tom_dev: i'm on the new plain kernel on this one
06:29 PM Tom_dev: haven't patched it yet
06:32 PM rue_mohr: yup, your best odds of sliding over to the modifed one are to get the normal bse of it to compiel fine
06:37 PM Tom_L: after all those installs, it shouldn't bitch about anything....
09:28 PM Tom_L: taking alot longer on the q1900
10:30 PM Tom_L: i can't tell on the first one but what i may have built the RTAI patch. uname -a doesn't say but it says the patches were added to the kernel
10:30 PM Tom_L: i'm not sure how to tell
10:31 PM Tom_L: the 2nd one failed on a memory allocation error
11:37 PM rue_shop1: when did the error happen
11:37 PM rue_shop1: comoile boot
11:37 PM rue_shop1: when when!
11:41 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~tom-itx/irc/logs/%23linuxcnc-devel/2020-04-28.html
11:41 PM Tom_L: if you wanna follow
11:41 PM Tom_L: it's his patch i think
11:57 PM rue_mohr: I still say there is no point in making a deb package
11:57 PM rue_mohr: if unless your modifying the source and posting it as a releast
11:57 PM rue_mohr: release
11:58 PM rue_mohr: if the patch is released _THEY_ have a deb they can give YOU
11:58 PM rue_mohr: in which case, there is no point compiling it like your doing :/
11:59 PM Tom_L: their end goal is probably to release it as a deb for ppl
