10:43 AM aandrew: what do y'all like to use for linear bearings? I've been thinking of using the common LM8UUs with 3d printed "pillow blocks" for light duty stuff, but I note that both Tom_L's and that large router youtube vid use a similar linear assembly
10:50 AM Tom_L: rue_mohr, turns out i've got probably 60+ skate bearings to do something with :)
10:50 AM aandrew: I've seen lm8<suffix> which are flat, can't remember how the numbering works offhand
10:50 AM aandrew: I have lots of skate bearings of course, bearingscanada has decent prices on them
10:50 AM aandrew: and they go on sale too occasionally
10:51 AM rue_mohr: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3150816
10:51 AM aandrew: rue_mohr: "always the wrong size" - you just never have the one you want, or they're poor quality?
10:51 AM Tom_L: https://www.ebay.com/itm/US-HGH20-Linear-Guide-Rail-CNC-Kit-Ballscrew-RM1605-400-700-1000mm-Nut-BK-BF12/114023794768?_trksid=p2485497.m4902.l9144
10:51 AM Tom_L: i put those (similar) on my mill
10:51 AM Tom_L: guy from another channel used 15mm ones
10:51 AM rue_mohr: the UU8's I got would not fit properly on precision ground 8mm rod
10:52 AM Tom_L: remains to be seeen how his turns out
10:52 AM rue_mohr: tho, the UU10 I got were ok
10:52 AM rue_mohr: but that 5 point, always works
10:53 AM rue_mohr: 3 points radially, 5 points on rod
10:55 AM aandrew: "its got an awesome to is that you have to feel to beleive" -- parser error. "it's got an awesomeness to it that you have to feel to believe" ?
10:55 AM aandrew: I gotta print one to feel this awesomeness now
10:56 AM rue_mohr: oops
10:56 AM aandrew: lol lol lol lol
10:56 AM rue_mohr: :)
10:56 AM aandrew: you will sit there sliding it back and forth on your rod not giving a care in the world to everyone looking at you funny.
10:56 AM aandrew: no innuendo at all, no sir...
10:56 AM rue_mohr: how did that never get caught
10:56 AM rue_mohr: its so ice smooth
10:57 AM * Tom_L pictures a glacier
10:57 AM aandrew: that is a really interesting linear bearing design
10:58 AM aandrew: so you just use three regular old 608s
10:58 AM rue_mohr: the springs on the screws just keep a bit of tension on the plastic
10:58 AM rue_mohr: aandrew, nope, smaller
10:58 AM rue_mohr: did I list the number?
10:58 AM aandrew: didn't read yet, looking at the pictures
10:59 AM rue_mohr: last time me and a chap make some, we had lots of problems with the cheap bearings
10:59 AM rue_mohr: some of them were not concentric on the outter race
10:59 AM aandrew: the last picture on that, where it shows all the pins -- how did you generate that? is it a thing with openscad?
10:59 AM rue_mohr: no, thats thingiverse doing bad parsing
11:00 AM rue_mohr: they cant properly render an scad file, I dont know why
11:00 AM aandrew: ah ok
11:00 AM aandrew: I thought you were just calling out all the "vitamins"
11:01 AM aandrew: you do call out the bearings: 623z and 3mm pins
11:01 AM rue_mohr: its like they fall down on any csg, but that cant be
11:01 AM rue_mohr: yep
11:01 AM rue_mohr: sounds right
11:01 AM rue_mohr: there is a companion part
11:01 AM rue_mohr: a clip
11:01 AM rue_mohr: a "jesus" clip, you know, the kinda that you say "jesus!" they they go flying past your eye across the room?
11:04 AM rue_mohr: oh, I wonder if I didn't get it posted yet
11:05 AM rue_mohr: oh there it is
11:05 AM rue_mohr: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3150814
11:05 AM rue_mohr: getting those in is an ordeal
11:05 AM rue_mohr: print extra
11:06 AM rue_mohr: you need to install 10
11:06 AM Tom_L: :)
11:06 AM Tom_L: jesus clip...
11:06 AM aandrew: "csg" ?
11:06 AM rue_mohr: subtract this shape from that one
11:07 AM rue_mohr: or add or intersect
11:07 AM rue_mohr: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3150790
11:08 AM rue_mohr: ^ it goes against the ideal physics world, but two of them, front and back, is a good idea
11:08 AM rue_mohr: they are loose, the bottom jaw is just to stop the table tilting out if you turn the machine upside down
11:08 AM Tom_L: you can tell i'm a bit rusty on the mill... grabbed a cutter yesterday and cut the shit outta my finger
11:09 AM Tom_L: no it wasn't turning...
11:09 AM rue_mohr: oops
11:09 AM rue_mohr: good to know the bits are sharp
11:09 AM Tom_L: it didn't bleed right away so i thought i was ok
11:09 AM rue_mohr: your finger gonna be a 2 day or 2 week recovery?
11:09 AM rue_mohr: ah
11:09 AM rue_mohr: mostly leather damage
11:10 AM Tom_L: then it was a gusher
11:10 AM Tom_L: heart must be getting old. took a while to pump it out
11:10 AM rue_mohr: :/
11:10 AM Tom_L: no, it didn't stop me
11:11 AM rue_mohr: pipe tape keeps the fliud in
11:11 AM Tom_L: ya just coterize it with a blazing hot bar you just welded
11:11 AM Tom_L: rules of da shop
11:15 AM Tom_L: just pisses me off cause then you get it all over the work
11:24 AM rue_bed: carryn a rag around for the rest of the day
11:25 AM rue_bed: nothing like a really sharp cut you dont notice tho, start finding yer goo everywhere before ya know there is a leak
11:25 AM rue_bed: WTF? is that from me... where... oh!
11:27 AM Tom_L: good if you set something down and can't find it. just follow the trail
11:28 AM Tom_L: you're heading the wrong way sir
11:28 AM Tom_L: you went from rue_mohr to rue_bed instead of rue_shop1
11:28 AM aandrew: heh
11:29 AM aandrew: I can be anywhere and my bouncer doesn't tell you
11:29 AM aandrew: I'm just aandrew
11:46 AM aandrew: sigh
11:47 AM aandrew: why do the accounts payable departments at 99% of businesses have to be so damned skeezy
11:47 AM aandrew: I gave you net 30, you know damn well that means payment is due in my account in 30 days, not "oh we'll start figuring out how to get your account info set up into our wire transfer system" on day 30
11:48 AM aandrew: at least now when my manager asks why my commits aren't pushed ot the server I can say "well my payments for the past month aren't being pushed to my bank account"
12:12 PM zhanx_: lol
12:12 PM zhanx_ is now known as zhanx
12:16 PM rue_mohr: indeed
12:17 PM zhanx: really? filament broke mid spool on this print, odd
12:18 PM aandrew: do you have a filament sensor? I don't, that would be bad
12:18 PM zhanx: no i don't i watch it from time to time
12:20 PM aandrew: I was printing a jet engine model for one of my sons and let this print go overnight, not realizing I had collisions. kind of funny, but was not amused: https://i.imgur.com/r8DJLra.jpg
12:23 PM zhanx: 2 useable parts?
12:23 PM aandrew: yep pretty much. also had some odd adhesion issues back then
12:24 PM aandrew: as you can see, the filament kind of pulled away from the print
12:25 PM aandrew: I do have the whole thing assembled and mostly working, it's been in his room for about a year I think
12:25 PM aandrew: some issues with clearance, but overall is a good model, it just won't spin freely
12:26 PM zhanx: if i start typing random style the cat is wanting me to pet her
12:27 PM zhanx: stuff / style
12:27 PM zhanx: rescue cat is needy
12:29 PM aandrew: zhanx: https://hackertyper.net/
12:30 PM zhanx: can't use that, one have one person on this keyboard
12:47 PM rue_bed: aandrew, 8-| oops
12:49 PM rue_bed: aandrew, heated bed + tape?
01:13 PM aandrew: rue_bed: yep
05:51 PM rue_mohr: so I need to write a state machine for parsing C
06:02 PM polprog: i learnt how to do karnaugh maps
06:02 PM rue_mohr: :)
06:02 PM polprog: in exchange for teaching integrals
06:02 PM polprog: :D
07:24 PM aandrew: it took me far far far far far too long to understand karnaugh maps. I had repeatedly missed the gray code requirement for ordering the terms
07:24 PM aandrew: mind you I haven't touched a karnaugh map since grade 10 now...
08:00 PM rue_mohr: I will say I'v never needed them, HOWEVER
08:00 PM rue_mohr: I'v had soem damn times working out how to implement a few logic functions
08:11 PM aandrew: I just let the damn synthesis tool work that out :-)
08:11 PM rue_mohr: heh, I meant for non-fpga
08:15 PM aandrew: yeah I know. I think you derive a certain sick pleasure from recruiting 555s and as many transistors as possible to avoid anything more complex :-)
08:16 PM aandrew: that's absolutely not meant as an insult, btw
08:30 PM rue_mohr: :)
08:30 PM rue_mohr: I do love finding completely wrong things to apply a 555 to
08:36 PM aandrew: haha
08:41 PM rue_mohr: I also love analog digital hybrid, things like that flow meter, a dac like thing
08:42 PM rue_mohr: adc
08:54 PM rue_mohr: Tom_L, want to break some small bits?
08:54 PM rue_mohr: I got a cnc challenge
08:54 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/art/snowflake.dxf
08:55 PM rue_mohr: cut that out of a CD
08:55 PM Tom_L: cd is too brittle
08:56 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1150666.jpg
08:56 PM rue_mohr: mhm
08:56 PM Tom_L: yeah i remember you making a few of those
08:56 PM rue_mohr: its a thought
08:56 PM rue_mohr: their a challenge!
08:57 PM Tom_L: i bet
09:07 PM rue_mohr: yay I got some of the comment hilighting code working
09:09 PM Tom_L: yay
09:11 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/Untitled.png
09:14 PM aandrew: man I love the music at the start of the hunt for red october, the russian choir music where he's getting ready for his trip
09:14 PM rue_mohr: heh
09:15 PM aandrew: man something about male choir music just resonates with me
09:16 PM rue_mohr: I'm trying to think of advanced things like rainbow brackets, that I can throw into this code
09:16 PM rue_mohr: I really like the rainbow thing
09:19 PM aandrew: I prefer my editors a little less colourful
09:19 PM Tom_L: yeah hard for me to see
09:20 PM rue_mohr: Its interesting, the syntax hilighting part of the tutorial really made my question the purpose of syntax hilighting
09:20 PM rue_mohr: I mean, it should make the code easier to read
09:20 PM rue_mohr: so, changing the colour of comments makes sense
09:21 PM rue_mohr: and coloured brackets make sense
09:21 PM rue_mohr: but...
09:21 PM rue_mohr: keywords can help cause of typo detection...
09:22 PM aandrew: https://imgur.com/a/ekjOazy
09:22 PM rue_mohr: hmm, it might help to change the body colour every time the code hits a semicolon...
09:22 PM rue_mohr: just a bit, toggle maybe
09:23 PM rue_mohr: I'm not sold on hilighting numbers
09:24 PM Tom_L: lots of choices
09:24 PM rue_mohr: I like dark, recon I have sensitive eyes
09:25 PM rue_mohr: for me, bad is red on white
09:28 PM rue_mohr: I also like an editor helping finish function names and browsing properties of structures
09:28 PM rue_mohr: dont know if I can bang out that much source parsing
10:20 PM Tom_L: i never could work with a dark background with txt but always prefer it with cad
10:20 PM Tom_L: weird...
10:20 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/Mold_Rev2/Top_view5.jpg
10:21 PM Tom_L: seems perfectly normal for me but bugs the crap outta me if it were txt
10:21 PM rue_mohr: if your staring intensely at something, nice for it to be a bit dark
10:22 PM rue_mohr: oo I figured out how to turn on mouse codes
10:23 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/practice_drawings/Practice_Quiz3.jpg
10:23 PM Tom_L: the blue in catia worked out good for me too
10:24 PM rue_mohr: inddeed, doesn't have to be black
10:24 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/practice_drawings/Problem28.jpg
10:24 PM Tom_L: blues and greys seem to be good for my yes
10:24 PM Tom_L: eyes
10:24 PM rue_mohr: hahah I tried to grab and rotate it
10:24 PM Tom_L: haha
10:25 PM rue_mohr: I'm totally prepped for 3d internet
10:25 PM Tom_L: solidworks has a viewer you can do that with
10:25 PM Tom_L: not sure if it goes with the rendering or how it works
10:26 PM Tom_L: you've probably seen most of those practice parts i did
10:26 PM rue_mohr: yup
10:26 PM rue_mohr: arg, I hve to get out of this chair
10:27 PM rue_mohr: but, the only thing waiting for me in the shop is the stool
10:27 PM rue_mohr: maybe just a break form screen-time would help
10:27 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/practice_drawings/problem9.jpg
10:27 PM Tom_L: i don't like the colors in SW as good as catia
10:28 PM Tom_L: make a cube :)
10:32 PM rue_mohr: I dont have the repositioning skillz you do
10:32 PM Tom_L: you just don't know you do
10:33 PM Tom_L: it would take a decent vise
10:33 PM rue_mohr: also, it would take me a while to trim an ingot down to a cube
10:34 PM Tom_L: that's my problem here is having a good way to cut rough stock to size
10:34 PM Tom_L: it's either a hack saw or jig saw
10:34 PM Tom_L: i wish i had a nice bandsaw
10:35 PM rue_mohr: do you have room?
10:35 PM Tom_L: not really
10:40 PM Tom_L: if one fell outta the sky i'd find room though
10:40 PM rue_mohr: :)
10:40 PM rue_mohr: it took two falling out of the sky for me
10:41 PM rue_mohr: oh, I should cast a new guide before the one I have breaks too
10:41 PM Tom_L: or machine one from aluminum
10:46 PM rue_mohr: the only peices I have that big are cast
10:53 PM rue_mohr: hahah scrolling with the mouse wheel is harder than I thought
10:53 PM rue_mohr: not hard, just harder
10:55 PM rue_mohr: there you go tom
10:56 PM rue_mohr: mill up some injection molds for face shields
10:56 PM rue_mohr: https://twitter.com/idlehandsdev/status/1248450403827503111
10:56 PM rue_mohr: hospitals are using them for one patient visit and then throwing them out
10:56 PM rue_mohr: so their going thru millions of them
11:16 PM aandrew: watching this movie makes me want to find a way to play 688 attack sub again
11:17 PM aandrew: I remember dad funded my 50 foot NULL Modem cable :-)
11:18 PM rue_shop1: 50 feet?
11:19 PM aandrew: yep
11:19 PM aandrew: and had DB9 and DB25 on each end
11:19 PM Tom_L: old days they would sterilize stuff
11:20 PM Tom_L: no repeater halfway?
11:21 PM aandrew: nope
11:21 PM aandrew: just wire
11:21 PM Tom_L: i did a couple for my bud's 2nd shop that spanned 75-100ft
11:21 PM Tom_L: from the cad pc to his cncs
11:21 PM aandrew: I wasn't good enough with electronics back then to be able to do a repeater
11:22 PM aandrew: and years later we'd play Worms 2 and Duke Nukum on the old Lantastic IPX network when I visited HQ at my first real job
11:22 PM aandrew: and quake after that but that was IP
11:22 PM aandrew: doom/quake
11:23 PM rue_shop1: My first network was arcnet, cause ethernet was $$$$
11:23 PM aandrew: mine was 10b2
11:23 PM Tom_L: wasn't 3com that fat stuff?
11:23 PM aandrew: did some support work for the local accounting firm and they were all token ring still
11:24 PM Tom_L: helped a friend rewire some of that at his work
11:24 PM rue_shop1: the cards I have used 50 ohm, 2Mbit (FAST!)
11:24 PM Tom_L: it may have been token ring, can't remember
11:25 PM Tom_L: i tossed probably 100 novell disks years ago
11:25 PM aandrew: heh I remember a BBS DOOR game I was half-assed trying to write called Pir8 d00d
11:25 PM Tom_L: i recall 300baud bbs
11:26 PM aandrew: it was all about starting out with MS DOS and downloading/hacking/cracking your way all the way up to the state of the art, Novell Netwarez :-)
11:26 PM aandrew: didn't get into BBSing until 2400 baud, but wanted a modem ever since I heard about the 300 baud ones for the c64
11:26 PM Tom_L: i had an sx
11:26 PM aandrew: man
11:27 PM Tom_L: i think i found it used
11:27 PM aandrew: what if this is our generation's version of the VA / legion
11:27 PM aandrew: where we sit around and reminisce
11:28 PM Tom_L: i don't remember much about cpm though
11:29 PM Tom_L: i did pay more for my first 10mb hdd than my current Tb ssd
11:30 PM Tom_L: excuse me, i think it was 20Mb
11:30 PM aandrew: I stole 8MB of memory out of a mac SE at school but returned it when I realized it wouldn't work in my 386sx16
11:38 PM rue_shop1: I think my first was 120M
11:38 PM Tom_L: you musta been the rich kid on the block :D
11:39 PM rue_shop1: no, I knew people
11:40 PM Tom_L: i still had my first 8088 pc up until that flood recently
11:40 PM rue_shop1: the guy who set me up with that computer paved the way for the career I'v had so far
11:40 PM Tom_L: finally tossed it with a bunch of old books etc
11:44 PM Tom_L: i should sleep but i'm not tired
11:45 PM Tom_L: this virus crap has really messed with my sleep schedule
