12:17 AM rue_mohr: huh, they say one sign of the virus is being brutally tired
12:22 AM rue_mohr: how the hell am I supposed to know if its my normal brutally tiredness or not?
04:03 AM polprog: make a CNC Menger cube
04:04 AM polprog: or a Sierpinski pyramid
06:29 AM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/art/elex.pov
06:30 AM rue_mohr: ^ polprog
06:53 AM polprog: thanks
08:14 AM aandrew: Tom_L[m]: nice cubes, so I take it you're into the metalworking
08:14 AM rue_mohr: tom built a great cnc to upgrade from his sherline
08:15 AM aandrew: jesus man
08:15 AM aandrew: you don't ever sleep
08:15 AM aandrew: I think "brutally tired" is just your natural state
08:15 AM rue_mohr: latley it is
08:16 AM rue_mohr: I'm spooked cause thats one of the listed symptoms of the virus
08:16 AM rue_mohr: but I'v had an issue long before it was out
08:16 AM rue_mohr: from what I can tell, my system dumps melitonin
08:16 AM aandrew: I saw an interesting "3d printed" CNC, used a router and lots of 1" alu square tube and could actually cut alu stock with enough passes
08:16 AM rue_mohr: maybe I dont know if I ahve too much, or a lck of my system breaking it down
08:16 AM rue_mohr: yup
08:17 AM rue_mohr: there was a link...
08:17 AM aandrew: yeah - I think most people will have mild to no symptoms, but if you find you cannot get enough air and your lungs feel like you're drowning, that's time to go to emerg ASAP
08:17 AM rue_mohr: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/
08:17 AM rue_mohr: ah there is some stuff to see
08:18 AM rue_mohr: aandrew, yea, I'm watching my lungs
08:18 AM aandrew: and I heard that most people our age seem to get a low-grade fever that lasts days rather than the spike that others seem to get
08:18 AM rue_mohr: you know, I have a stethoscope here somewhere...
08:19 AM aandrew: I don't know that it's really necessary - minor noise can be a false positive. basically (obv not a doc) - watch your temp, monitor your breathing and if you'e got one watch the spo2
08:20 AM aandrew: I got a cheap $20 pulse ox off amazon, turns out it has a serial port inside it, I can get continuous readings of spo2 and pulse if I need
08:20 AM aandrew: but yeah - if your lungs are clear you're likely in no danger
08:20 AM aandrew: but if you have trouble breathing that's the first sign (he says as he coughs)
08:20 AM rue_mohr: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_atw3e0nIrg is the link tom had for the square tube cnc (long video, skip lots)
08:21 AM aandrew: yep thats the exact one I saw
08:21 AM rue_mohr: I have a real pulse ox from the hospital, it has startup troubles, but then its fine
08:22 AM rue_mohr: so I just leave it on int eh livingroom
08:22 AM aandrew: I like the use of the bog-standard 120vac router, I wonder when you'd run into it's limits (runout, etc.) - seemed pretty decent in that it milled a big GT2 pulley/sprocket
08:22 AM aandrew: rue_mohr: heh I have an old bench meter that has simialr issues - display is wonky at startup but once it's running it runs great
08:22 AM rue_mohr: :)
08:24 AM aandrew: I have a bridgeport knee mill in my garage I gotta put a motor on
08:24 AM rue_mohr: hmm, I'm supposed to go fix up a kiln today
08:24 AM rue_mohr: nice
08:24 AM rue_mohr: I have an old busybee in someone elses garage :/
08:24 AM aandrew: I have a 550V 2 or 3HP on it, but that means I either have to rewind/replace the motor or use a transformer as a combo load reactor/transformer
08:25 AM aandrew: I think I might just put a 2-3HP DC motor on it instead, not 100% sure. they're all damned expensive, that's what I know
08:25 AM aandrew: so I keep my eye out for a junk/surplus one
08:26 AM rue_mohr: 4HP -> 12.4A @ 240V
08:27 AM rue_mohr: I'd imagine the 550V is 3 phase eh?
08:29 AM aandrew: yep
08:30 AM aandrew: I think I could even get by with a 3/4-1hp dc motor to start just to get some chips flying
08:30 AM aandrew: when I start bogging it down I could look for something bigger
08:30 AM rue_mohr: toms using his sherline motor, 800w?
08:31 AM aandrew: hm, other than it being at a weird angle, is there any real danger/risk in using a vertical mill as a simple lathe (think for cutting things like pulleys)
08:34 AM rue_mohr: I made an angle plate for my lathe
08:34 AM rue_mohr: but there is a snag
08:34 AM rue_mohr: they didn't put my toolpost in a T slot
08:35 AM rue_mohr: the photo of my model shows a T slot, but I think they were breaking, so it was changed to a single theaded hole
08:35 AM rue_mohr: I asked if I could get back to the factory for a T slot version but the answer (after a while) came back no
08:37 AM rue_mohr: the T slot version is really thin between the dovetail and the T slot, which is why I suspect they ditched it
08:37 AM rue_mohr: two threaded holes
08:37 AM rue_mohr: there is a rotation thing...
08:41 AM aandrew: hm, I wonder if you can make an adapter plate (countersunk hole to attach to toolpolst, t-slot on top
08:42 AM aandrew: the thing that impressed me about that square alu tube build was it's simplicity. really two stock items make it up: tube stock and threaded rod
08:43 AM rue_mohr: yep
08:43 AM aandrew: I found myself pining for a horizontal bandsaw
08:43 AM rue_mohr: my welded one is pretty simple too
08:43 AM aandrew: but then I started wondering if I can just build a "horizontal hacksaw" with a motor spinning an offset wheel and a weight on the hacksaw
08:44 AM aandrew: I can't weld something to be square to save my life. :-)
08:44 AM aandrew: need more practise
08:44 AM rue_mohr: weld pulls in
08:45 AM aandrew: right, and I suspect if you've got everything clamped down enough you can tack it and then "fill"
08:45 AM rue_mohr: I was going to build a reciprocating hacksaw, but I was given a horizontal first
08:45 AM rue_mohr: another thing I'm working to grasp, it how MUCH weld is NEEDED
08:45 AM aandrew: dude was cutting alu tube with a mitre saw in the video
08:46 AM rue_mohr: I like full beads, but honestly, most of the time its severe overkill
08:46 AM aandrew: if I borrowed my dad's mire saw for that he'd kill me dead :-)
08:46 AM aandrew: yeah I like the look of a full weld too
08:46 AM rue_mohr: :)
08:46 AM aandrew: maybe I can borrow my brother's. he's bigger than me but not all that tough
08:47 AM aandrew: "why does the motor on my mitre saw smell like that?" <whistling and looking away> "must have been like that when I got it"
11:37 AM Tom_shop is now known as Tom_L
03:31 PM zhanx__ is now known as zhanx
04:22 PM Tom_L: 88°F
04:47 PM rue_mohr: you or the shop?
05:34 PM aandrew: either one isn't particularly good, honestly
05:36 PM rue_mohr: hmm
05:37 PM aandrew: today was kind of a shit day. nothing *bad* but around 2-3pm I just ... didn't want to work anymore. no motivation, still kind of feel like I want to nap but not tired, hard to explain
05:37 PM aandrew: just kind of sick and tired in general
05:40 PM rue_mohr: heh exhaustion is a symptom
05:40 PM rue_mohr: my boss' wife works at a hospital
05:41 PM rue_mohr: says, before you get ill, you have an energy burst
05:41 PM rue_mohr: I'v caught a few of mine over the years
05:42 PM aandrew: yeah, it's kind of like how the terminally ill will rally just before they expire
05:43 PM aandrew: unrelated to how you feel amazing right after puking
05:45 PM aandrew: bleh
05:45 PM aandrew: all the 3d modelling tools are either windows-only or web based shit
05:45 PM aandrew: openscad is probably the best way to go if you don't want to trust the cloud
05:50 PM rue_mohr: what are you modeling?
05:53 PM aandrew: nothing in particular right now, just generalizing
05:54 PM aandrew: I was (am) using shapr3d on my ipad and it's nice for quick knocking things up and has some parametric support but once you extrude from the sketches it doesn't seem like the extrusions "listen" to the sketches anymore
05:54 PM aandrew: and you can't take a gear or something made up of a bunch of shapes and say "select all these edges" - gotta do it piecemeal
05:59 PM Tom_L: rue_mohr, outside temp
06:07 PM rue_mohr: aandrew, ouch
06:07 PM Tom_L: working on my cube
06:07 PM rue_mohr: :)
07:00 PM aandrew: Tom_L: are you a left-coaster as well?
07:01 PM zhanx: no he is a mid country type thing
07:03 PM rue_mohr: z!
07:03 PM rue_mohr: give a quick update!
07:03 PM rue_mohr: I'm ill
07:03 PM rue_mohr: (more, again, hell if I know)
07:04 PM zhanx: here,
07:04 PM zhanx: no more update to give
07:05 PM aandrew: Hi zhanx
07:05 PM zhanx: hi aandrew i was off when rue introduced us
07:05 PM aandrew: No worries, irc is good for that
07:05 PM zhanx: yep
07:06 PM aandrew: Man maybe I should just go to bed, I’m just not feeling it tonight
07:06 PM aandrew: Not sick at all, just blah
07:21 PM rue_mohr: zhanx, are you all moved then?
07:21 PM rue_mohr: the editor in this tutorial, did not have a "new" or "open"
07:21 PM aandrew: Where’d you move from/to?
07:22 PM rue_mohr: not far, he had the rug pulled on the place he was living, due to an owner splitup
07:22 PM rue_mohr: (he might have done is chatting for the week)
07:23 PM aandrew: Wow that would suck
07:24 PM rue_mohr: it wasn't the only thing he got hit with, but I should leave him to tell if he wants
07:24 PM aandrew: For sure
07:33 PM rue_mohr: well I can only take this editor code so far
07:33 PM rue_mohr: but, where it falls down, the code I wrote in 2000 picks up nicely
07:33 PM rue_mohr: there are still some gaps
07:34 PM rue_mohr: wtf did google to
07:34 PM rue_mohr: do to their site
07:34 PM rue_mohr: wtf
07:39 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Cube1.jpg
07:39 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Cube2.jpg
07:40 PM rue_mohr: ok, question, if you ahve an editor where there are multiple people connected, doing things to the same document, what happens if one of the people hits "undo" does just *their* last thing get undone?
07:40 PM rue_mohr: Tom_L, nice
07:40 PM rue_mohr: it didn't take long eh?
07:40 PM rue_mohr: 1 program run 6 times?
07:41 PM Tom_L: yup
07:48 PM rue_mohr: hmm
07:49 PM rue_mohr: I need to be able to see the top and bottom of a file at the same time
07:56 PM Tom_L: split window
07:56 PM Tom_L: i do it all the time
07:59 PM rue_mohr: yea, I'm working on writing the editor
07:59 PM rue_mohr: :)
07:59 PM rue_mohr: rainbow brackets I really like
08:00 PM Tom_L: ok the block was fun. now what?
08:00 PM rue_mohr: heh spring fever
08:00 PM rue_mohr: a z axis for my machine? :)
08:00 PM rue_mohr: I got half way thru another one and aborted the design
08:00 PM Tom_L: got a drawing?
08:01 PM rue_mohr: nope
08:01 PM Tom_L: got pics of where it mounts?
08:01 PM rue_mohr: I have another idea tho, not sure on the implementation
08:01 PM Tom_L: what sort of spindle?
08:01 PM rue_mohr: router
08:01 PM rue_mohr: 2-1/4hp
08:01 PM rue_mohr: which is part of an issue
08:02 PM rue_mohr: mounting the router by a plate at the bottom is seeming quite non-ideal
08:02 PM Tom_L: got a pic?
08:03 PM rue_mohr: workin on it
08:03 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/projects/cnc6/p1130489.jpg
08:03 PM rue_mohr: thats the... uh, y? carriage?
08:03 PM rue_mohr: the clear plate is the mount for the router
08:04 PM rue_mohr: I dont like the build-out, cause the router has to extend down 6"
08:04 PM Tom_L: mmmm
08:04 PM Tom_L: A frame it
08:04 PM rue_mohr: the slider positions and everything get ugly
08:04 PM rue_mohr: ?
08:05 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Assembly/Z_Axis_Assembly2.jpg
08:05 PM Tom_L: like i did the stepper there
08:05 PM Tom_L: braces on each side
08:06 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Assembly/Z_Motor_Mount1.jpg
08:06 PM Tom_L: better pic
08:07 PM Tom_L: i think i ended up welding that to the column
08:07 PM Tom_L: err yeah, there's a plate the stepper mounts on and slides for belt adjustment
08:08 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Assembly/Z_Motormount4.jpg
08:13 PM Tom_L: how much twist is there in those pipes holding Z?
08:17 PM ShopMoon: ping
08:17 PM rue_mohr: sorry moon phoned me
08:17 PM rue_mohr: 8-|
08:17 PM ShopMoon: Sin waves man :P
08:18 PM rue_mohr: Tom_L, the extending down 6 inches and staying ridgid is my concern
08:18 PM rue_mohr: ShopMoon, grab a picture of what your up to
08:18 PM rue_mohr: Tom_L, thats a good point too
08:18 PM rue_mohr: I was going to add another rear rail to make the whole thing a triangle beam
08:19 PM ShopMoon: rue_mohr: its in process
08:20 PM Tom_L: you'd be surprised how much flex there is even in something you _think_ is damn rigid
08:20 PM Tom_L: S
08:20 PM Tom_L: sin wave.
08:20 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/programming/c/DIY-ed/ <- ShopMoon if you want to give it another test, I updated main
08:21 PM rue_mohr: yea, I should just get it working and go to improving it
08:21 PM Tom_L: zoom out so i can see the overall Z
08:21 PM Tom_L: where it mounts etc
08:22 PM Tom_L: i'm surprised how much better the mill is now
08:22 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/projects/cnc6/p1130242.jpg
08:22 PM Tom_L: thanks to you
08:22 PM rue_mohr: I'm working on it
08:22 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/projects/cnc6/p1130138.jpg
08:22 PM rue_mohr: I'm missing pics
08:22 PM Tom_L: yeah that's what i wanted
08:23 PM Tom_L: i'd make a triangle
08:23 PM Tom_L: and brace it like they do radio towers, cranes etc
08:23 PM rue_mohr: ShopMoon, as you scroll up and down, the bracket colours change :)
08:23 PM Tom_L: i thought you made some triangles already for something
08:23 PM rue_mohr: yup, I wanted to keep the back open for now incase I need it to have stuff
08:24 PM rue_mohr: there is some stuff I'v not done yet till I get other stuff done
08:26 PM rue_mohr: I might need a counter weight
08:26 PM rue_mohr: I do need a whole bunch of bike chain
08:26 PM Tom_L: just measured my cube with my good mic and all sides are within .003" of what it was supposed to be
08:27 PM rue_mohr: :) nice
08:27 PM Tom_L: i knew one side was over a bit but the other 2 were within .001
08:27 PM Tom_L: which is alot better than the sherline ever was
08:27 PM rue_mohr: I want to make some dovetail sliders some time
08:28 PM Tom_L: for?
08:28 PM rue_mohr: less the weight, for this would be nice
08:28 PM rue_mohr: but I want to make some smaller machiens too
08:28 PM rue_mohr: not even as big as yours
08:29 PM Tom_L: as your Y is right now you're gonna get quite a bit of twist from it
08:29 PM ShopMoon: thats a trip ;)
08:30 PM rue_mohr: ShopMoon, isn't it?
08:30 PM rue_mohr: its from that problem where you can only see one line at a time
08:30 PM rue_mohr: Tom_L, I should just build it, get it working, then improve it
08:30 PM rue_mohr: or I'll never get it finished
08:31 PM Tom_L: or your editor, or your....
08:31 PM rue_mohr: ShopMoon, if you do (((((((((((())))))))))) you can see it rorate thru the colours
08:31 PM rue_mohr: the router
08:32 PM Tom_L: how thick is that plexi?
08:32 PM rue_mohr: 1/2" iirc
08:32 PM Tom_L: hope it doesn't crack at the screws
08:32 PM rue_mohr: but the idea is that the angle its mounted to/held by is the structure
08:33 PM rue_mohr: its pretty thick
08:33 PM Tom_L: i'm afraid it will
08:33 PM rue_mohr: I'll watch it
08:33 PM rue_mohr: it IS plexi
08:33 PM Tom_L: it's gotta hold quite a bit of force
08:33 PM rue_mohr: not sure on that
08:33 PM rue_mohr: Its mainly a wood machine
08:33 PM Tom_L: i may have used a steel plate there
08:34 PM rue_mohr: I need to keep the weight down for the Y axis
08:34 PM rue_mohr: tho I was thinking of counterbalancing it with a fixed-current motor
08:36 PM rue_mohr: 990 twitter followers....
08:36 PM rue_mohr: https://twitter.com/RueNahcMohr/status/1247857989253394433/photo/1
08:36 PM rue_mohr: ^^^ rainbow brackets
08:36 PM rue_mohr: I used the resistor colour code (I skipped black)
08:38 PM zhanx: i need to make a new robot
08:39 PM rue_mohr: yup
08:39 PM rue_mohr: gonna plant your feet somewhere first?
08:39 PM rue_mohr: your in an inter-limbo just now aren't ya?
08:39 PM zhanx: dont know
08:39 PM zhanx: yep
08:40 PM zhanx: and inter-limbo job due to this panic
08:40 PM zhanx: cant contract unless i have PPE, can't get PPE
08:41 PM rue_mohr: they dont supply it eh?
08:41 PM rue_mohr: funny
08:41 PM rue_mohr: do you have a working printer right now?
08:41 PM rue_mohr: my shop had everything if I needed it
08:42 PM rue_mohr: gloves (got some before this all started), N95 masks (not many, but I keep a few "good ones") alcohol (in a spray bottle no less) face shield (like 6 of them)
08:44 PM rue_mohr: I think the usa will pass itallys fatalities by friday
08:44 PM zhanx: yes i have 1.5 working printers
08:45 PM zhanx: use hydrogen peroxide fyi for virus
08:45 PM rue_mohr: iso works, doesn't it?
08:46 PM zhanx: not the same
08:46 PM * zhanx had training remember
08:46 PM rue_mohr: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries
08:46 PM rue_mohr: ok, mix it down or?
08:47 PM zhanx: https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6
08:47 PM zhanx: tub and soak for 15 minutes
08:47 PM rue_mohr: ah thats the one I was looking for
08:48 PM rue_mohr: I think trump is gonna show the world how fatalities are done
08:49 PM rue_mohr: open up everything for easter
08:49 PM zhanx: Compare to Europe, hard nope
08:49 PM zhanx: Europe is running that death toll to the extreme
08:49 PM rue_mohr: usa is comming up FAST
08:50 PM zhanx: only in cities that democrats said get out and fight trumps racism
08:50 PM zhanx: i can link you the comments by their leaders if it helps you
08:51 PM rue_mohr: na, I really dont want to get caught up in it
08:51 PM zhanx: its all in fighting and stupid
08:51 PM rue_mohr: we ahve people flooding in from the states here
08:52 PM rue_mohr: I dont know why the borders weren't properly closed
08:52 PM Tom_L: i thought the national guard was there
08:52 PM zhanx: Trudy answered that, and really that answer was lame
