10:17 PM rue_mohr: hmm where is Z
10:23 PM Tom_L: if you run sudo su instead of sudo will that put software in places it normally wouldn't?
10:24 PM Tom_L: like ./local/bin instead of somewhere else?
10:48 PM rue_mohr: hno
10:48 PM rue_mohr: no
10:49 PM rue_mohr: hmm
10:49 PM rue_mohr: well there is one situation it might
10:49 PM rue_mohr: if its installing in a user directory
10:49 PM Tom_L: helping a guy test some install instructions but i did sudo su instead of sudo on every line
10:49 PM rue_mohr: so it depends on who su or sudo was switching to
10:49 PM Tom_L: root
10:50 PM Tom_L: i would assume
10:50 PM rue_mohr: sudo runs one instruction as the specified user
10:50 PM rue_mohr: su switches the whole session to the specified user
10:50 PM Tom_L: that's what i thought
10:50 PM Tom_L: you'd have to log in as root to do anything as root wouldn't you?
10:51 PM rue_mohr: not if your allowed to sudo commands as root
10:51 PM Tom_L: su = 'super user' right?
10:51 PM rue_mohr: yes, but it switches your user identify till you type exit
10:52 PM rue_mohr: sudo runs the command after it as the user, then switches back to who you were
10:52 PM Tom_L: well i'll try it again tomorrow
10:52 PM Tom_L: i don't think that was the problem but i won't count it out just yet
10:53 PM rue_mohr: it doesn't sound like it would have made a difference
10:53 PM Tom_L: https://kcjengr.github.io/probe_basic/dev_install.html
10:53 PM Tom_L: i started at step 2
10:54 PM Tom_L: step 5 - 6 is what i question
10:54 PM Tom_L: 5-7
10:54 PM rue_mohr: that all looks fine
10:54 PM Tom_L: kinda what i thought but i'm no expert
10:55 PM rue_mohr: sometimes su will switch directories, due to the fact your user identity changes, but with root, it shouldnt'
10:55 PM Tom_L: it was supposed to put some things in /home/tom/.local/bin but it didn't
10:57 PM rue_mohr: hmm
10:57 PM rue_mohr: I could give it a run for you later
10:57 PM Tom_L: i'll run thru it again tomorrow
10:57 PM rue_mohr: just paging thru a book on modulation
10:57 PM Tom_L: fresh debian 9 install
10:57 PM Tom_L: i was just testing it anyway
11:14 PM Tom_L: modulation for what?
11:16 PM rue_mohr: just generically
11:16 PM Tom_L: somebody gave me some old routers long time ago that used AC lines to modulate the signal across
11:16 PM Tom_L: worked fine until you crossed to the other buss
11:16 PM Tom_L: i never used them
11:17 PM rue_mohr: I been playing with controlling a 74hc595 via 1 wire, and its been interesting
11:17 PM rue_mohr: most of those use data bursts around the zero crossings
11:17 PM rue_mohr: you plug in a vacuum cleaner and your internet goes away
11:17 PM Tom_L: heh
11:18 PM Tom_L: maybe that's why i got em free
11:18 PM rue_mohr: :)
11:18 PM rue_mohr: universal brushed motors are evil in general
11:18 PM rue_mohr: moof up wifi too
11:18 PM rue_mohr: I'm a fan of wired internet
11:19 PM Tom_L: all my stuff is wired
11:19 PM rue_mohr: I think I might be ill
11:19 PM Tom_L: all their stuff is wifi :)
11:19 PM rue_mohr: I agree that its not plausable to plug in an iphone for network
11:20 PM Tom_L: i could do shared wifi off the galaxy but it would quit as soon as i left
11:21 PM Tom_L: i've never tried it
11:22 PM rue_mohr: kill the plan
11:22 PM Tom_L: it's unlimited
11:22 PM Tom_L: why are you ill?
11:23 PM rue_mohr: its about the right time of year
11:23 PM rue_mohr: usually just after haloween I crash
11:23 PM rue_mohr: I think the sugar I usually take on pushes me over an edge
11:24 PM rue_mohr: but the intermittent nauzia is making me think something is not right
11:24 PM rue_mohr: and I'm super tired but cant sleep
11:24 PM rue_mohr: *sigh*
11:25 PM rue_mohr: can I be a robot yet?
11:26 PM Tom_L: no not yet
11:27 PM rue_mohr: I think I should work on cyborg, some steel kneecaps would be a nice start
11:30 PM rue_mohr: I'v had some intereting encounters with hybrid digital/analog circuits
