01:02 AM rue_mohr: I think da bot broke
01:02 AM zhanx: yep
01:02 AM rue_mohr: you remember the url?
01:02 AM zhanx: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~tom-itx/irc/logs/%23garfield/index.html
01:03 AM rue_mohr: found it!
01:04 AM zhanx: nice
01:04 AM rue_mohr: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~tom-itx/irc/logs/%23garfield/2019-07-21.html
01:05 AM zhanx: oh my birthday
01:12 AM rue_mohr: .... again?
01:14 AM zhanx: 07 21 was
01:14 AM zhanx: happens once a year
01:19 AM rue_mohr: oh
01:21 AM zhanx: odd
01:22 AM zhanx: openscad crashed on me
01:22 AM rue_mohr: good thing you save all the time
01:22 AM zhanx: i do now yes
01:22 AM rue_mohr: and before every render
01:23 AM zhanx: twice
01:28 AM rue_mohr: I wonder how my amazon order is going
01:28 AM zhanx: slow?
01:30 AM rue_mohr: well, not arrived yet
01:30 AM rue_mohr: I got the drive head for wood on the lathe
01:30 AM zhanx: ?
01:30 AM rue_mohr: and a taper adapter that I didn't realize I dont need
01:31 AM rue_mohr: !?!?!?!
01:31 AM rue_mohr: I wonder if I can successfully cast pipe clamps
01:31 AM rue_mohr: like, the clamps that fit on pipe
01:32 AM zhanx: maybe?
01:33 AM rue_mohr: did you see the link for the iron casting?
01:33 AM zhanx: nope
01:34 AM rue_mohr: https://www.instructables.com/id/Iron-Melting-and-Casting-Casting-Iron-Plaque/
01:34 AM zhanx: too much video
01:34 AM zhanx: I got a solution for the internet on the first
01:35 AM rue_mohr: you have a real internet connection comming, right?
01:36 AM zhanx: yep
01:36 AM rue_mohr: ok, so
01:36 AM rue_mohr: the bandsaw(s) I have can take 93" or 93.5" blades from 1/8" to 3/4" wide
01:38 AM zhanx: cat tax
01:38 AM rue_mohr: ?
01:38 AM zhanx: ranch cat thinks it owns me
01:39 AM zhanx: i fed it
01:41 AM rue_mohr: its only 11:36 and I'm dead tired
01:42 AM zhanx: cat is happy got left over chicken from dinner
01:42 AM rue_mohr: ooo they changed payment stuff
01:43 AM zhanx: ?
01:43 AM rue_mohr: ali
01:43 AM rue_mohr: I have a funny method cause it was less trouble and they changed it
01:43 AM zhanx: yea a week ago
01:44 AM rue_mohr: \no more other
01:49 AM rue_mohr: ?
01:49 AM rue_mohr: I bought a $27 blade and I was charged $24
01:49 AM rue_mohr: ...w....t....f?????
01:51 AM zhanx: think i need to scale this for the computer to handle it better
01:52 AM rue_mohr: hmm
01:52 AM rue_mohr: $25ea, or 3 pcs for $56
01:52 AM rue_mohr: $56 is a lot for one puchase on ali
01:53 AM zhanx: higher than i ever spent on one
01:53 AM rue_mohr: well its 3 blades
01:53 AM rue_mohr: it makes sense, codense shipping
01:53 AM rue_mohr: their not small
01:53 AM zhanx: k
01:53 AM rue_mohr: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33011940084.html
01:54 AM rue_mohr: vs
01:54 AM rue_mohr: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32781755065.html
01:54 AM rue_mohr: I'll use 3 blades
01:54 AM zhanx: you will
01:54 AM rue_mohr: pretty sure I'm not gonna die that soon
01:55 AM zhanx: fyi is its 41.50 for me
01:55 AM zhanx: for 3
01:55 AM rue_mohr: cad vs usd
01:55 AM zhanx: thank your pm for me
01:55 AM rue_mohr: sounds like the usd is crashing and we cant artificially deflate out dollar fast enough
01:56 AM rue_mohr: ok, I'll go for 3 blades...
01:56 AM zhanx: usd is fine wait till monday it dropped .00125%
01:58 AM zhanx: rain stopped
01:58 AM zhanx: its flooded outside
01:59 AM zhanx: now I know why they have a deck like this
02:00 AM rue_mohr: its funny
02:01 AM rue_mohr: the search for my blade turns up 6 blades and a vibrator
02:01 AM rue_mohr: ?????
02:01 AM zhanx: its ali
02:01 AM rue_mohr: the other search turned up 2 blades and maybe 1000 watches
02:02 AM rue_mohr: ok, I bought blades for the horizontal saw and a metal blade for the vert saw
02:02 AM rue_mohr: it sure would be nice to cut metal on the vert bandsaw
02:03 AM rue_mohr: its got the ability to ratio down for it
02:23 AM zhanx: ok i need a faster pc
02:27 AM rue_mohr: trying to think if there is anything else I wanted off ali
02:27 AM rue_mohr: I dont think so
02:28 AM rue_mohr: I'v been buying so little stuff that I cant even remember my new cc number
07:27 PM * zhanx sets his mouth on fire with hot red curry
07:44 PM Tom_L: there you go torturing yourself again
08:02 PM zhanx: this is a good pain, good food
09:58 PM rue_shop3: ok, 3rd casting
10:07 PM zhanx: pics
10:26 PM rue_mohr: pot is springing a leak every time now
10:27 PM rue_mohr: maybe I should find a better pecking hammer
10:28 PM Tom_L: or get a better pot
10:30 PM rue_mohr: yea, I'm trying to avoid that
10:31 PM Tom_L: not if you're gonna keep doing it
10:31 PM rue_mohr: well I just need to make a better pot
10:31 PM rue_mohr: I'm pondering a lined one
10:32 PM rue_mohr: saw silicone at the store rated for 1200c
10:32 PM rue_mohr: I'm only ~750c
10:32 PM Tom_L: you'll be casting steel soon or cast iron...
10:33 PM zhanx: i think it will fail
10:34 PM rue_mohr: 1200c
10:34 PM rue_mohr: *shrug*
10:34 PM Tom_L: most tutorials and videos recomend what they do because they've been there
10:34 PM rue_mohr: just a lining on the inside of the pot
10:35 PM Tom_L: will it stick to it?
10:35 PM rue_mohr: yea, they have places they can just buy things and put thousands of dollars into supplies and then sell all the stuff they make
10:35 PM rue_mohr: and they only do that one thing
10:36 PM Tom_L: ok. you bought a brand new lathe etc because you saw the usefulness in it. if you don't see that in this then don't but if you do i say get a good pot
10:37 PM rue_mohr: kinda
10:37 PM Tom_L: you seem to have plans for molten aluminum or you wouldn't have collected so much
10:37 PM rue_mohr: kiiiinda
10:38 PM rue_mohr: its more a matter on that one, of me not saying no
10:38 PM Tom_L: yeah you're bad about that...
10:38 PM rue_mohr: and pulling it out of the trash at work cause its not *garbage*
10:39 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/projects/aluminumcasting/slide.htm
10:39 PM rue_mohr: that was today
10:39 PM rue_mohr: from 1am to now
10:39 PM rue_mohr: that wheel takes on about 1.5L of aluminum, I had NONE left in the pot after that last pour
10:40 PM rue_mohr: oh zhanx
10:40 PM Tom_L: did it separate is why the spokes are filled in?
10:40 PM rue_mohr: I was going to make another of those swing-away risers, I cant figure out what pipe I used.
10:40 PM zhanx: almost done with pics
10:40 PM rue_mohr: Tom_L, its not a wheel, its a disc
10:41 PM rue_mohr: same as that vac table
10:41 PM Tom_L: oh that's right... i forgot
10:41 PM rue_mohr: if I were doing a flywheel, I would NOT use straight spokes
10:42 PM Tom_L: is it cracked around the hub?
10:42 PM rue_mohr: the lost foam project box came out nice
10:42 PM rue_mohr: yea
10:42 PM rue_mohr: the other one did too
10:42 PM rue_mohr: shrinkage
10:42 PM rue_mohr: and my small radius corners
10:42 PM zhanx: k
10:43 PM Tom_L: new smelter holding up and working well?
10:43 PM Tom_L: looks like it..
10:43 PM rue_mohr: yup
10:43 PM rue_mohr: helps if I dont leak aluminum into it on a regular basis
10:44 PM rue_mohr: erodes the bottom
10:44 PM * Tom_L gives rue_mohr a graphite pot
10:44 PM rue_mohr: the first wheel today there was a complete fail
10:44 PM rue_mohr: somehow the flask didn't seal
10:45 PM rue_mohr: it looks like the 2L graphite pots are ~$300
10:45 PM rue_mohr: :S
10:46 PM rue_mohr: Id pour another wheel if the pot didn't need fixing and the sand didn't need to recover
10:46 PM Tom_L: how big is 5kg?
10:46 PM rue_mohr: need enough sand for two castings at a time
10:47 PM rue_mohr: 5kg?
10:47 PM rue_mohr: not sure on density
10:47 PM Tom_L: https://www.ebay.com/p/5kg%2DCasting%2DClay%2DGraphite%2DCrucibles%2DRefining%2DMelting%2DCopper%2DAluminium%2DBrass%2DEct/893451826?iid=273498788061&rt=nc
10:47 PM rue_mohr: I was wondering that today tho
10:47 PM Tom_L: ~4 x 6 it appears
10:48 PM Tom_L: just under
10:48 PM rue_mohr: yea, the size of those pots is not related to the numbers their sold by
10:49 PM rue_mohr: so its ~1.2L
10:49 PM rue_mohr: so, awesome deal
10:50 PM rue_mohr: it looks like ebay is trying to step up their game
10:50 PM zhanx: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075CT9FLX
10:50 PM rue_mohr: I wonder if they ever addressed any of the horried tech issues
10:50 PM Tom_L: that one's a little smaller
10:51 PM rue_mohr: well wtf, why were the pots I was looking at so crazy expensive
10:51 PM zhanx: that is the one i have
10:51 PM zhanx: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018ZM58MO
10:51 PM rue_mohr: I see 8kg
10:51 PM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075CT9FLX
10:51 PM Tom_L: yup
10:52 PM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075CT9FLX
10:52 PM Tom_L: 12kg
10:52 PM zhanx: Tom_L, same links
10:53 PM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/KgFoundry-Graphite-Crucibles-Refining-Aluminum/dp/B01MS8UFG3/ref=pd_cp_328_4?pd_rd_w=F0IsD&pf_rd_p=ef4dc990-a9ca-4945-ae0b-f8d549198ed6&pf_rd_r=8M1N9H66RE8ZR85T5CNC&pd_rd_r=1c9fa059-fc3b-4450-95ea-5f20f410417f&pd_rd_wg=kK0QJ&pd_rd_i=B01MS8UFG3&psc=1&refRID=8M1N9H66RE8ZR85T5CNC
10:53 PM rue_mohr: https://www.amazon.com/KgFoundry-Graphite-Crucibles-Refining-Aluminum/dp/B01MS8UFG3/ref=pd_cp_328_4
10:53 PM Tom_L: just posted that one
10:54 PM zhanx: rue_mohr, I have 4 burns/melts on my 4kg so far
10:54 PM Tom_L: up to 1600c
10:54 PM zhanx: looks fine
10:54 PM rue_mohr: so the #6 is about 5L
10:54 PM Tom_L: you might have to make a bigger crucible
10:54 PM Tom_L: or would it still fit in it?
10:55 PM Tom_L: 6.5 x 6.25"
10:55 PM Tom_L: 6.5" Dia. x 6.75 Length
10:55 PM rue_mohr: is there a link for a #5?
10:56 PM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/Graphite-Crucible-Furnace-Torch-Melting/dp/B077Q8ZLB1
10:56 PM rue_mohr: #6 is about 2L, which should do
10:56 PM Tom_L: #5 6 1/2 inch tall by 5 3/4 inch diameter
10:57 PM Tom_L: so 6 is an inch deeper
10:57 PM rue_mohr: #5 is about 2.3L
10:57 PM rue_mohr: !?!
10:58 PM rue_mohr: wow it would be nice if they just posted the volume
10:59 PM Tom_L: What are the inside dimensions?
10:59 PM Tom_L: Answer:
10:59 PM Tom_L: The inside dimensions are a rounded cone, not a cylinder. The size for this crucible is 6 KG (6 Kilograms of Brass.)
10:59 PM Tom_L: If you convert 6 KG of Brass the volume of this is 43.0871 cubic inches or a 4.3496 inch Ball or Sphere. Here are examples of the sizes of Crucibles:
10:59 PM rue_mohr: wtf, according to a quick search, kg ratings are for brass and copper
11:00 PM Tom_L: 1 KG = 7.1812 cubic inches = 2.3936" Sphere
11:00 PM Tom_L: 2 KG = 14.3624 cubic inches = 3.0158" Sphere
11:00 PM Tom_L: 4 KG = 28.7247 cubic inches = 3.7997" Sphere
11:00 PM Tom_L: 6 KG = 43.0871 cubic inches = 4.3496" Sphere
11:00 PM Tom_L: 8 KG = 57.4494 cubic inches = 4.7874" Sphere
11:00 PM Tom_L: 10 KG = 71.8118 cubic inches = 5.1570" Sphere
11:00 PM Tom_L: 12 KG = 86.1742 cubic inches = 5.4802 Sphere
11:00 PM rue_mohr: ugh
11:00 PM Tom_L: 14 KG = 100.5365 cubic inches = 5.7691 Sphere
11:00 PM zhanx: my #4 does about 2 kg of aluminum
11:00 PM Tom_L: there
11:00 PM rue_mohr: wtf, VOLUME
11:00 PM rue_mohr: ok, working backwarsds
11:01 PM rue_mohr: zippo:/files/graphics/pictures/2019/temp# circle -v 2
11:01 PM rue_mohr: Radius is : 0.781593
11:01 PM rue_mohr: Diameter is: 1.563185
11:01 PM rue_mohr: Circumfrence is : 4.910892
11:01 PM rue_mohr: Area is : 1.919158
11:01 PM rue_mohr: Sphere area: 7.676634
11:01 PM rue_mohr: Sphere volume: 2.000000
11:01 PM rue_mohr: no
11:01 PM rue_mohr: I need more wrong
11:02 PM rue_mohr: zippo:/files/graphics/pictures/2019/temp# units 2L inch3
11:02 PM rue_mohr: * 122.04749
11:02 PM rue_mohr: zippo:/files/graphics/pictures/2019/temp# circle -v 122.05
11:02 PM rue_mohr: Radius is : 3.077157
11:02 PM rue_mohr: Diameter is: 6.154315
11:02 PM rue_mohr: Circumfrence is : 19.334351
11:02 PM rue_mohr: Area is : 29.747421
11:02 PM rue_mohr: Sphere area: 118.989685
11:02 PM rue_mohr: Sphere volume: 122.050003
11:02 PM rue_mohr: so, by that, my pot is biger than them all
11:03 PM Tom_L: hmm, my post skipped #5
11:03 PM rue_mohr: my "sphere" is 6.15"
11:03 PM Tom_L: ~14kg one
11:03 PM rue_mohr: I'm gonna go weigh that thing I just cast
11:03 PM rue_mohr: it was about 3/4 of the pot
11:04 PM rue_mohr: iirc
11:04 PM Tom_L: they're weighing brass
11:04 PM zhanx: fix the pot, weigh it, fill it, cool it weight it
11:04 PM rue_mohr: their sphere is a volume tho
11:04 PM rue_mohr: it would be nice if they just understood volume
11:04 PM zhanx: yep
11:04 PM rue_mohr: dont measure how much it freaking holds in terms of a sphere'd diameter in inches!
11:05 PM Tom_L: You'll need to temper the crucible prior to using it to melt anything. Moisture can accumulate in the clay from the time that it's manufactured until it gets to you, including during the shipping. Steam explosions are no fun.
11:05 PM zhanx: yep, i started at 200 and went to 450 over the course of 8 hours on mine
11:06 PM Tom_L: Basically, slowly heat the crucible empty in your furnace to close to the maximum temperature and then allow it all to cool slowly. I have a furnace with a lid, for example, and I heated it slowly past the melting point of aluminum, then turned off the burner and let the empty crucible cool down inside with the lid on. After that, you're good to go. They say to only use one alloy in a crucible, but I've melted aluminum, brass, and copper at differe
11:07 PM rue_shop1: ok, that last pour was 3kg
11:07 PM Tom_L: so not quite as much as you thought?
11:08 PM rue_shop1: yes and no
11:08 PM rue_shop1: their measuring their volume in kg of brass or ?
11:08 PM Tom_L: brass
11:08 PM Tom_L: in that discussion anyway
11:10 PM rue_shop1: so thats 1.1L, I'd guessed 1.5
11:11 PM Tom_L: aluminium - melted 2560 - 2640 kg/cu.m
11:11 PM Tom_L: brass - casting 8400 - 8700
11:11 PM rue_shop1: so, I'm prolly about 2L FULL
11:11 PM Tom_L: weight comparison
11:12 PM Tom_L: https://www.simetric.co.uk/si_metals.htm
11:12 PM rue_shop1: ok, so if we take 2L of aluminum, convert it to volume, and convert that to the weight of brass
11:13 PM Tom_L: https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/metal-alloys-densities-d_50.html
11:13 PM Tom_L: basically the same thing
11:13 PM Tom_L: just to verify
11:15 PM Tom_L: ~4x as much
11:15 PM Tom_L: 3.xxx something
11:16 PM rue_mohr: ok
11:16 PM rue_mohr: pondering
11:16 PM rue_mohr: if I can cast, 4kg of alumninum, thats 1kg of brass
11:16 PM rue_mohr: by volume
11:16 PM rue_mohr: did I go the right way?
11:16 PM rue_mohr: no
11:16 PM Tom_L: i think so
11:17 PM rue_mohr: thats 16kg of brass
11:17 PM rue_mohr: volume stays the same
11:17 PM Tom_L: oh by volume yes
11:17 PM rue_mohr: so weight goes up
11:17 PM Tom_L: weight
11:17 PM zhanx: no brass weights more
11:17 PM Tom_L: about 4x as much yes
11:17 PM rue_mohr: yea, so 4kg aluminum is 16kg brass
11:17 PM Tom_L: approx yes
11:17 PM rue_mohr: which again supports the "I'm off the high end of the chart" thing
11:18 PM rue_mohr: ?tag=googleshopc0c-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=343721340454&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=6351102047363067026&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9001444&hvtargid=pla-727253014784&psc=1
11:18 PM rue_mohr: were into that
11:18 PM rue_mohr: $100
11:18 PM Tom_L: bad link
11:18 PM rue_mohr: hahah wrong half
11:19 PM rue_mohr: https://www.amazon.ca/OTOOLWORLD-Graphite-Crucible-Refining-Aluminum/dp/B07KXN77ZZ/ref=asc_df_B07KXN77ZZ/
11:19 PM Tom_L: go big or go home
11:20 PM rue_mohr: ... I am home...
11:20 PM Tom_L: or make smaller parts
11:21 PM rue_mohr: er, not an option }:)
11:21 PM Tom_L: still not that bad for the size
11:21 PM Tom_L: 90 cad
11:22 PM Tom_L: haha i wonder if prime would drop ship to you for free
11:22 PM Tom_L: i've done that with other stuff
11:22 PM Tom_L: but not to canada
11:23 PM rue_mohr: https://www.instructables.com/contest/metal2019/?linkId=72342823
11:23 PM rue_mohr: if only I could make the money not matter
11:24 PM zhanx: for real
11:24 PM rue_mohr: I know eh?
11:24 PM rue_mohr: I been pondering, CNC machine? something cast?
11:25 PM Tom_L: gnite
11:25 PM zhanx: you are on vacation finish the CNC. nite Tom_L
11:25 PM rue_mohr: I have a huge lack of confidence
11:25 PM rue_mohr: cant *just* finish it, it needs DC servomotors
11:25 PM Tom_L: why?
11:26 PM rue_mohr: If I knew I could win, maybe I could buy gecko drives
11:26 PM Tom_L: leadshine are ok
11:26 PM Tom_L: and cheaper
11:26 PM rue_mohr: cause I dont have dc servomotor firmware worked out yet
11:26 PM rue_mohr: regardless
11:26 PM Tom_L: those steppers i got are damn strong
11:27 PM rue_mohr: if ya look at the entries, I could just about put anything in there and come out really good
11:27 PM Tom_L: i noticed that too
11:27 PM Tom_L: good i'm not gonna compete :)
11:28 PM zhanx: Tom_L, you should on the last day
11:29 PM rue_mohr: I was reading the rules over a few times
11:29 PM Tom_L: i could just post my mill
11:29 PM rue_mohr: I THINK I could enter the holding arm, as it doesn't say that the project needs to be started within the comp. period
11:29 PM Tom_L: i could use the gift card but they can keep those cheap vises
11:30 PM zhanx: rue_mohr, enter them all
11:30 PM rue_mohr: their drive is to get people to write instructables, not neccisarily start a new project
11:30 PM rue_mohr: I dont know if one person can have multiple entires
11:30 PM rue_mohr: I couldn't find it, but I dont think so
11:30 PM zhanx: try it, like you said they just want the instructables
11:31 PM rue_mohr: (:S
11:31 PM rue_mohr: I wonder if I took enough pits
11:31 PM rue_mohr: pics
11:31 PM zhanx: more than most do
11:31 PM rue_mohr: well, k, I'll try it
