03:10 PM rue_mohr: ok, got he new ladel made
03:14 PM rue_mohr: ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/projects/smelter/
03:14 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/projects/tiltnpanmirror/p1120828.jpg
03:14 PM rue_mohr: the linear position sensor is on and happy
03:14 PM Tom_L: u r goin all out on this ehh?
03:14 PM rue_mohr: which one?
03:14 PM Tom_L: the pot and ladel
03:14 PM rue_mohr: the smelter had to be redone
03:14 PM rue_mohr: it needed to be redone for at least 2 years now
04:56 PM Tom_L: that latel fits inside the pot when you dip it?
05:26 PM rue_shop1: !!! the torch is just idle and the aluminum is melting like crazy
05:30 PM Tom_L: more efficient ehh?
05:40 PM Tom_L: pour more metal in quick to stop the melting!!!!!!!
06:35 PM rue_shop1: got off 27 likleys
06:35 PM rue_shop1: waaay more efficient
06:35 PM rue_shop1: like 4 to 8x
06:36 PM rue_shop1: I didn't have time to record some of the stuff I was melting down before it was gone
06:44 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1120853.jpg
06:44 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1120857.jpg
06:58 PM Tom_L: that's the new mold?
06:58 PM Tom_L: work better than the other one?
06:59 PM Tom_L: good thing about it, you can put the unlikelys right back in the pot
07:00 PM rue_shop1: well, I added a new factor
07:00 PM rue_shop1: as I was pouring I tapped it on the top of the pot
07:01 PM Tom_L: oh you tapped the mold on the pot?
07:01 PM rue_shop1: yep
07:01 PM Tom_L: huh
07:01 PM rue_shop1: the first one I did I didn't tap and it hung at the entry
07:01 PM Tom_L: looks like the pliers speed up the production too
07:01 PM rue_shop1: tried it for the second one and then just kept going
07:01 PM rue_shop1: yea, they sheer it a bit as they open, which helps push out the peice
07:02 PM rue_shop1: go figure
07:02 PM Tom_L: can't really tell from the pics but does the alum go out the vents ok?
07:02 PM rue_shop1: a bit yes
07:02 PM rue_shop1: aka, it gets into the vents only a bit
07:02 PM Tom_L: that's good
07:02 PM rue_shop1: the neck helps keep it in
07:03 PM Tom_L: is it gonna be hard to round off the pour spicket from the end of the part?
07:03 PM rue_shop1: no
07:03 PM rue_shop1: I used a hacksaw, then take it to the belt sander
07:03 PM rue_shop1: have to hit the flash anyhow
07:03 PM Tom_L: how do the halves align?
07:04 PM rue_shop1: great from what I could tell
07:04 PM Tom_L: so this one may be a win
07:04 PM rue_shop1: I'll lay it all out a bit more later
07:04 PM Tom_L: yep
07:04 PM rue_shop1: the other one might be too
07:04 PM rue_shop1: I'd like to try it on a set of channel locks like that
07:05 PM Tom_L: you put the short pins in for alignment right?
07:05 PM rue_shop1: I only did a moderate tack
07:05 PM rue_shop1: I welded it to the locks with the pins in
07:05 PM rue_shop1: then left them out completely
07:05 PM Tom_L: those may not be the best pliers for alignment
07:05 PM rue_shop1: I agree
07:05 PM rue_shop1: thats why its only a tack weld
07:06 PM rue_shop1: figured they wouldn't need to take much force
07:06 PM rue_shop1: one thing, is that I started to get flash left in the mold
07:06 PM Tom_L: as long as they stay yeah
07:06 PM rue_shop1: needed a little scraper hit every so often
07:06 PM Tom_L: spray with Pam?
07:06 PM rue_shop1: seems to be more trouble than its worth
07:06 PM rue_shop1: goes on kinda heavy, then messes up the next cast
07:07 PM Tom_L: wonder what WD40 would do
07:08 PM rue_shop1: :)
07:08 PM rue_shop1: might be able to apply it lighter
07:09 PM Tom_L: i bet the pliers get hot to handle
07:10 PM rue_shop1: dunno if the camera caught it, I have a water spraybottle
07:10 PM Tom_L: just the bottom of it
07:10 PM Tom_L: now that you said what it was...
07:12 PM rue_mohr: if I set up better I could do 'em twice as quick
07:12 PM Tom_L: looks like you can snip the vents off with cutters
07:13 PM rue_mohr: I need somewhere to put the ladel, (if I only had something that could hold it) and a close spot to unload them
07:13 PM rue_mohr: yep
07:13 PM Tom_L: you got a welder... make something to hold it
07:13 PM rue_mohr: I'm going to get a metal blade for the vert bandsaw too
07:13 PM Tom_L: has your worker seen these yet?
07:13 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/projects/3rdarm/p1120701.jpg
07:14 PM rue_mohr: its sole job is to hold things
07:14 PM rue_mohr: yea
07:14 PM rue_mohr: he thinks its great
07:14 PM rue_mohr: but we have yet to make a sprayer with one
07:14 PM rue_mohr: I'm just all gung ho on casting them
07:14 PM Tom_L: heh you got a new "good" toy now
07:15 PM rue_mohr: the cnc machines are comming up fast on the list
07:15 PM rue_mohr: along with cleaning my deck :-/
07:17 PM Tom_L: you put a hinge on the smelter lid yet?
07:17 PM Tom_L: you didn't have a lid before did you?
07:17 PM rue_mohr: no, its good enough I can move it fast with the gloves
07:17 PM rue_mohr: I was just using a peice of 1/4" plate steel
07:18 PM rue_mohr: technically an old christmas tree stand
07:18 PM Tom_L: oh that's right.. i remember seeing it now
07:18 PM rue_mohr: so thats a bunch of the improvement
07:18 PM rue_mohr: its got the hole in the middle
07:18 PM Tom_L: weld a 'table' next to the top of the opening to slide the lid onto so you can put it right back when needed
07:18 PM rue_mohr: so nonally does the heat wrap all the way around the pot, but I can drop stuff into the pot without taking the lid off
07:19 PM rue_mohr: I'm pondering handles, hooks and swings
07:20 PM rue_mohr: I was pondering what I'v seen done, and none of it had anything special in the casting
07:25 PM Tom_L: better keep the alum supply up now
07:26 PM rue_mohr: hahah
07:27 PM rue_mohr: I didn't even use up the pile they gave me time before last at work
07:27 PM rue_mohr: I havn't even brought home the last box
07:28 PM rue_mohr: I cast some cylinders for lathe stuff and still got 9 muffins out of it
07:28 PM Tom_L: do you empty the pot when you're done or leave it full?
07:28 PM rue_mohr: have to empty it
07:29 PM rue_mohr: its got to be inspected before every use cause of that stupid steel erosion thing
07:29 PM Tom_L: true
07:29 PM rue_mohr: part of why I didn't do more triggers
07:30 PM rue_mohr: it occured to me that the aluminum was sitting in there a long time
07:30 PM rue_mohr: look what happened to that ladel in less than 1 session
07:30 PM Tom_L: still got quite a few good ones
07:31 PM rue_mohr: that is only the second pot ever
07:32 PM rue_mohr: that must be z
07:32 PM Tom_L: it's tearing up the new ladel already?
07:32 PM rue_mohr: didn't look yet
07:32 PM rue_mohr: I'm still chilling ;)
07:33 PM Tom_L: so how long did the batch take start to finish?
07:34 PM rue_mohr: not really sure
07:35 PM rue_mohr: it went pretty fast
07:35 PM rue_mohr: less than 30 mins for the 29 goes
07:35 PM Tom_L: maybe you should cast some of the other parts
07:35 PM rue_mohr: dunno
07:36 PM rue_mohr: the lever has forces on it, casting wouldn't be my first material choice
07:36 PM rue_mohr: at the pivot
07:37 PM rue_mohr: and the latches are complex and easy to just cnc
07:37 PM Tom_L: those little ones i sent?
07:37 PM rue_mohr: yep
07:37 PM Tom_L: the jig helped those
07:38 PM rue_mohr: yes!
07:39 PM rue_mohr: I'm gonna need more milk
07:39 PM Tom_L: so how many lengths of those do you make? 2?
07:39 PM Tom_L: hand held and extended
07:41 PM Tom_L: the hand held one doesn't use this part
07:46 PM rue_mohr: the 3" is different because the front and the back are merged into one peice, which makes the "actuator arm" and the trigger into the same part
07:46 PM Tom_L: saw that
07:50 PM Tom_L: does the connecting wire go inside the tube or below it?
08:07 PM rue_mohr: below
08:08 PM rue_mohr: inside would not leave enough room for levers
08:10 PM Tom_L: true
09:08 PM rue_shop1: pot seems ok
09:08 PM Tom_L: yay
09:20 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1120861.jpg
09:20 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1120862.jpg
09:20 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1120863.jpg
09:20 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1120864.jpg
09:20 PM rue_mohr: I think the pot stabalized or soemthing, I'v not seen any of the whickid corrosion in it like I did at the start
09:21 PM Tom_L: how's that vent at the top working out?
09:21 PM Tom_L: is it in the way or doing it's job?
09:21 PM rue_mohr: seems to be fine
09:22 PM rue_mohr: I should have turned it the other way around, the handle side stays cleaner
09:23 PM Tom_L: put the vent toward the pliers?
09:23 PM rue_mohr: some of the detail is pretty impressive
09:23 PM rue_mohr: yea
09:23 PM rue_mohr: if I want to do a bigger run, I'll set up differently
09:23 PM rue_mohr: I was only set to do a few tests
09:24 PM Tom_L: is the inlet too big?
09:24 PM rue_mohr: nope
09:24 PM Tom_L: the base of the funnel
09:25 PM Tom_L: those look pretty good
09:25 PM rue_mohr: might be small, trying to understand why it blocks up (tapping the whole thing works)
09:25 PM rue_mohr: yea
09:25 PM Tom_L: you think the relief in the mold helps?
09:25 PM rue_mohr: I'm happy
09:25 PM rue_mohr: I think it does
09:25 PM rue_mohr: I want to try pliers and tapping on the other one
09:26 PM Tom_L: looks like you're gettin it figured out
09:26 PM rue_mohr: I think its exciting int eh context of making something that uses a bunch of the same part
09:27 PM Tom_L: fairly quick too
09:27 PM Tom_L: you'll have to make a drill jig now
09:30 PM rue_mohr: gotone
09:30 PM rue_mohr: got one
09:30 PM rue_mohr: a block with a pocket you just drop the part into and drill
09:44 PM Tom_L: i feel like i had a productive evening and i did nothing
09:44 PM rue_shop1: :)
09:44 PM rue_shop1: 3d printers do that too
09:44 PM rue_shop1: so, tell me what you would do differently if you did your cnc again
09:44 PM rue_shop1: :))
09:45 PM rue_shop1: :( I have to go shopping
09:45 PM Tom_L: if i didn't have a budget i'd have the frame cast and ground and get a larger spindle with changeable collets and a 1.5hp motor
09:45 PM rue_shop1: if I'm gonna have to drive that far, I want to do it for ateast 2 reasons
09:46 PM rue_shop1: not a $5 jug of milk
09:46 PM Tom_L: $5!
09:46 PM Tom_L: 1.29
09:46 PM Tom_L: but i get the cheap 0 fat stuff
09:46 PM rue_shop1: yea, but the farmers over there got milk coming out their ears
09:46 PM Tom_L: true
09:46 PM rue_shop1: trying to brun it off in cheese
09:47 PM rue_shop1: must be atleast one other thing I need
09:47 PM rue_shop1: 7:43
09:47 PM rue_shop1: erm, when they open till
09:48 PM rue_shop1: closes at 9
09:48 PM rue_shop1: *sigh*
09:48 PM Tom_L: how far away is it?
09:48 PM rue_shop1: 10 min drive
09:48 PM rue_shop1: so its like a 40 min trip
09:48 PM rue_shop1: did I ever mention I HATE driving?
09:48 PM Tom_L: i get pretty tired of it
09:49 PM rue_shop1: dont understand why I'm out of milk anyhow
09:49 PM rue_shop1: should still be 2L left
09:50 PM Tom_L: cats are sneaking in and drinking it
09:50 PM rue_shop1: I got two machines to work on
09:50 PM rue_shop1: the 48" x 96" wood router
09:50 PM rue_shop1: and something about the size of the sherline
09:50 PM rue_shop1: did you see the I beam I got for an upright?
09:50 PM Tom_L: i'm convinced the sherline is too small
09:51 PM Tom_L: maybe
09:51 PM rue_shop1: yes
09:51 PM Tom_L: did you finally drag in in to work on?
09:51 PM rue_shop1: the I beam has been in for 7 no now
09:51 PM rue_shop1: I have a problem with the [ channel to use as a base
09:51 PM rue_shop1: casue its too big to move and wont fit in my saw
09:52 PM Tom_L: ahh the channel was the culprit
09:52 PM rue_shop1: I think the plan was to take an angle grinder to it
09:52 PM Tom_L: the tubes i used seem to work pretty good
09:52 PM rue_shop1: and then winter happened
09:52 PM rue_shop1: hmm
09:52 PM Tom_L: got all them at the scrap yard
09:52 PM rue_shop1: yea, your scrap yard rocks
09:53 PM Tom_L: and the aluminum table came from the other scrap
09:53 PM Tom_L: no kidding
09:53 PM rue_shop1: I have to be sneaky and almost underhanded to get stuff from ours here
09:53 PM rue_shop1: that huge metal pile is gone
09:54 PM Tom_L: i talk to the guy at the steel yard sometimes
09:54 PM Tom_L: pretty nice guy
09:54 PM rue_shop1: damn, my eyes are gettin heavy
09:54 PM rue_shop1: that cant happen now
09:55 PM Tom_L: smelting does that i'm told
09:55 PM rue_shop1: !!!???
09:55 PM rue_shop1: I could understand if I'm dehydrated
09:55 PM rue_shop1: but I just drank the last of the milk, mixed with tea
09:56 PM rue_shop1: maybe if I get some orange juice too
09:56 PM rue_shop1: ugh
09:56 PM Tom_L: so you'll have to offer a trigger update option now
09:57 PM Tom_L: for the old ones anyway
10:00 PM rue_mohr: tigger update?
10:00 PM rue_mohr: oh hell no
10:00 PM rue_mohr: take 'em as they come in
10:00 PM rue_mohr: some peopel aren't having a problem
10:01 PM Tom_L: did you print them 100% infill?
10:01 PM rue_mohr: we changed the print settings in the later ones, havn't seen any come back
10:03 PM rue_mohr: SUNSCREEN
10:03 PM rue_mohr: ok
10:03 PM rue_mohr: there is my reason
10:04 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTJ7AzBIJoI
10:07 PM rue_shop1: trauck battery is dead again
10:07 PM rue_shop1: WTF
10:07 PM Tom_L: slow drain or bad battery?
10:34 PM rue_mohr: dunno
10:35 PM rue_mohr: but I heard someting buzzing
10:35 PM rue_mohr: I'll check it tommorow
10:35 PM rue_mohr: see if I can find any wayward loads
10:35 PM Tom_L: take the work truck instead?
10:35 PM Tom_L: or do without milk
10:35 PM rue_mohr: I'm back now
10:35 PM Tom_L: oh
10:35 PM rue_mohr: the disability cart I got had 1 good battery
10:35 PM rue_mohr: it started it ok
10:36 PM rue_mohr: had to take it out anyhow, cause I'm gonna cut the seat post off
10:36 PM Tom_L: those kinds of scrap is what i need for a spindle motor
10:36 PM Tom_L: any way i go though is gonna require more power
10:37 PM Tom_L: i'd just as soon have it be straight from the mains
10:37 PM Tom_L: like the sherline is
10:37 PM Tom_L: i wonder what their driver is good for power wise
