01:28 AM zhanx: darn it rue_mohr
01:41 AM rue_mohr: ?
01:42 AM zhanx: its out of the 20 price range
01:43 AM zhanx: but your arm makes me want to do it
01:44 AM rue_mohr: I'm sorta excited to get using it
01:44 AM zhanx: i bet
01:47 AM zhanx: i am gonna drop a 140 dollars on the frame tomorrow
01:57 AM rue_mohr: !??!
01:57 AM rue_mohr: old bedframe man
01:24 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwGnxB9BXK0
01:32 PM rue_shop1: just... dont try to drill holes in bedframe
04:57 PM rue_shop1: ugh, its like waitnig for paint to dry
04:57 PM rue_shop1: wait, I am waiting for paint to dry
05:05 PM * rue_shop1 fires up the smelter
05:47 PM Tom_L: the smelter will just peel the paint off
07:57 PM rue_shop1: so!, got a bunch of good ones, but had to stop cause of a problem...
08:10 PM Tom_L: ooo let's see..
08:10 PM Tom_L: what problem?
08:16 PM rue_shop1: oh damn, I got distracted
08:16 PM rue_shop1: dont die, I'll try agian
08:22 PM rue_shop1: didn't have any PAM cause I forgot to buy some (twice) and so I used crisco, but gave it too much
08:23 PM Tom_L: spatter?
08:23 PM rue_mohr: no just mess
08:23 PM rue_mohr: that stuff does't burn
08:23 PM Tom_L: use a small brush with it
08:23 PM rue_mohr: at 660c, you might expect flames...
08:23 PM rue_mohr: I did
08:23 PM rue_mohr: anyhow
08:24 PM rue_mohr: post iamges....
08:24 PM Tom_L: i'm betting the next one will be there tomorrow
08:24 PM rue_mohr: cool
08:24 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1120684.jpg
08:24 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1120688.jpg
08:24 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1120689.jpg
08:24 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1120690.jpg
08:26 PM rue_mohr: I'll make a new ladel... I had it sitting in the pot, I think thats a bad idea
08:26 PM rue_mohr: like to know whats eating the steel tho
08:26 PM Tom_L: no kidding
08:26 PM Tom_L: what's your pot made out of?
08:26 PM rue_mohr: steel :)
08:26 PM rue_mohr: mostly stainless steel
08:26 PM Tom_L: find a ss cup somewhere
08:27 PM rue_mohr: the procedure is to always empty it at the end of a session and do a corrosion check before starting a session
08:27 PM rue_mohr: well, it eats the stainless too
08:27 PM rue_mohr: I have a lot of patches on it
08:27 PM Tom_L: how's the mold holding up?
08:27 PM rue_mohr: last image
08:27 PM Tom_L: hard to see
08:27 PM rue_mohr: funny thing, its gonna need the release, the parts are getting harder to get out
08:28 PM Tom_L: is it pitting too?
08:28 PM rue_mohr: no
08:28 PM rue_mohr: the only finish issues were cause of the excess crisco
08:28 PM Tom_L: maybe it quit expanding since it's been hardened a few times
08:28 PM Tom_L: i sent the next one with the smaller pins
08:28 PM rue_mohr: I got the impression temperature is a factor
08:28 PM Tom_L: keep notes
08:29 PM rue_mohr: it looks like things go better when the al is REALLY hot and the mold is cold
08:29 PM Tom_L: the parts don't look bad
08:29 PM rue_mohr: I have to redo the smelter
08:29 PM rue_mohr: the lining has prettymuch had it
08:29 PM rue_mohr: and it needs a proper top
08:29 PM Tom_L: you got more mix for it?
08:29 PM rue_mohr: yea, the first one that worked came out shiny
08:29 PM Tom_L: what's the inside pot diameter?
08:30 PM Tom_L: the pot is SS?
08:30 PM rue_mohr: its a 1G hot water tank
08:30 PM rue_mohr: yea, the post is a peice of ss pipe that was hooked by an excavator in my yard
08:30 PM Tom_L: huh
08:30 PM rue_mohr: with a 1/4" plain steel bottom
08:30 PM Tom_L: dunno where i'd get ss
08:30 PM Tom_L: what did you weld it with?
08:30 PM rue_mohr: if you can do a ceramic pot, do it
08:31 PM rue_mohr: 6011
08:31 PM rue_mohr: :)
08:31 PM Tom_L: i don't know what my wire is
08:31 PM Tom_L: i think i've got 6011 sticks but no welder to use them
08:31 PM rue_mohr: so, I think the best thing is for me to make a job of it and redo everything (less the pot)
08:31 PM Tom_L: i think you need argon to do ss?
08:31 PM rue_mohr: stick...
08:31 PM Tom_L: i know
08:32 PM Tom_L: i'm talking about mig
08:32 PM rue_mohr: I was supposed to get the materials (cement and vermiculite) this weekend to redo it and I completely forgot
08:32 PM Tom_L: looks like you got at least 6 good ones
08:32 PM rue_mohr: thats just this batch too
08:33 PM Tom_L: how long does it take to get 6?
08:33 PM rue_mohr: still have the ones from the last batch
08:33 PM Tom_L: or what you did there
08:33 PM rue_mohr: less melting it down, that might be like 5 mins
08:33 PM Tom_L: that's good
08:33 PM rue_mohr: you can crack it open almost immediatly after
08:33 PM Tom_L: you're getting it figured out
08:33 PM rue_mohr: :)
08:34 PM Tom_L: the bottom up mold will work better i bet
08:34 PM rue_mohr: its kinda exciting, I'm looking forward to having soemthing for play to apply it to
08:34 PM rue_mohr: well lets see!
08:34 PM rue_mohr: the big holder arm is done
08:34 PM Tom_L: nice
08:34 PM rue_mohr: less I dont go crazy with touchup paint
08:34 PM Tom_L: i saw you painted it
08:35 PM rue_mohr: I'll post pics of the final job later
08:35 PM Tom_L: my coolant takes the paint off the mill if it sits in cracks etc
08:35 PM rue_mohr: its black with orange stripes and yellow handles
08:35 PM rue_mohr: oooo
08:35 PM rue_mohr: I didn't think official coolant did that
08:35 PM Tom_L: probably not official paint
08:35 PM rue_mohr: maybe brake fluid mix is valid.
08:36 PM Tom_L: if i had used epoxy it would be fine but it costs too much
08:36 PM rue_mohr: gonna get back to some things before my time is up, bbl
08:37 PM Tom_L: k
08:51 PM Tom_L: If you have a look at phase diagrams, you'll find intermetallic compounds between Fe and Al, and molten Al is rather reactive.
08:52 PM Tom_L: It is a general practice to melt aluminum alloys in graphite crucible at lab scale (R&D) because of its inertness to molten aluminum. Nevertheless, a congruent melting phase Al4C3 may form.
08:56 PM Tom_L: Most kinds of stainless steel are severely embritled by liquid aluminium. Because chromium is able to resist corrosion by molten Al fairly well, the stainless steel type AISI 446, having high Cr content (~25%), performs better than less enriched grades. Chromium electroplating can be used to protect stainless steels from molten Al. However, hard ceramic particles suspended in the molten Al could easily deteriorate this protective layer due to erosio
08:56 PM Tom_L: get a cast iron latel
08:58 PM Tom_L: or make one somehow
09:02 PM Tom_L: seems cast iron or graphite are best
09:07 PM rue_shop1: cool
09:07 PM Tom_L: find a plumber buddy with some cast sewer pipe
09:07 PM Tom_L: for a smelter
09:07 PM rue_shop1: or a hospital
09:07 PM Tom_L: and smaller for the latel
09:07 PM rue_shop1: oh, the main smelter itself is fine
09:08 PM Tom_L: you can find cast spoons on ebay
09:08 PM rue_shop1: just over the 8? years, the insulation has erroded away too much
09:08 PM rue_shop1: pff, money and time
09:08 PM Tom_L: what about the inside?
09:08 PM rue_shop1: I'll just not leave it in the pot
09:08 PM Tom_L: ss holding up ok?
09:08 PM rue_shop1: the remaining stuff is
09:09 PM rue_shop1: after a few spills I check it pre-flight
09:10 PM Tom_L: anyway i bet you can find something from cast iron that would work
09:12 PM Tom_L: i could ask andy. he's got a doctorate in metalurgy :)
09:13 PM Tom_L: and a nice guy
09:17 PM rue_shop1: I dont mind using that wrong stuff if I get it free
09:17 PM Tom_L: i know
09:18 PM rue_shop1: that holding arm took up about 0% of my general supplies
09:18 PM Tom_L: just pointing you to what to look for
09:18 PM rue_shop1: yep
09:18 PM rue_shop1: and cast iron pipe is a good one
09:18 PM rue_shop1: I come across it every so often
09:18 PM Tom_L: an old 2" p trap might work
09:18 PM Tom_L: or something like that
09:18 PM rue_shop1: I know people who do the water mains, its cast iron pipe with a concrete lining
09:19 PM Tom_L: yeah
09:19 PM rue_shop1: and the hospital gets rid of some sometimes on their repairs
09:19 PM rue_shop1: I usually dont get any, but its available
09:19 PM rue_shop1: (free :))
09:19 PM Tom_L: yeah
09:20 PM rue_shop1: the holding arm was supposed to be a 1 day project, and now that I'm done, I'm reeling from the progress
09:20 PM rue_shop1: working to clean up the deck a bit
09:20 PM rue_shop1: it was on the same todo list
09:20 PM Tom_L: looks like it turned out good
09:21 PM rue_shop1: yea, its gonna be nice to use
09:21 PM rue_shop1: and I might have a project for it
09:21 PM rue_shop1: a tilt-and-pan mirror
09:21 PM rue_shop1: but I'm in the wrong headspace
09:21 PM rue_shop1: need to do up supper and try to clean the deck up a bit
09:22 PM Tom_L: are you still using plastic A3 parts or switching over now?
09:22 PM rue_shop1: we have been using more metal ones
09:22 PM rue_shop1: the plastic ones we do now, we really go heavy on the prints,
09:22 PM rue_shop1: and they dont seem to have as many issues
09:23 PM rue_shop1: we have a stock of milled ones that we been drawing on
09:23 PM Tom_L: pla or abs?
09:23 PM rue_shop1: we havn't had an order since you made the mold
09:23 PM rue_shop1: pla
09:23 PM Tom_L: aww
09:23 PM rue_shop1: its brittle
09:23 PM Tom_L: maybe seasonal
09:23 PM rue_shop1: one of the thoughts has been to embed mesh into the printed triggers
09:24 PM rue_shop1: its burstie
09:24 PM Tom_L: same with the programmers
09:24 PM rue_shop1: nothing for just long enough to forget how to make them, and then an order of 20
09:24 PM rue_shop1: so we keep getting opportunities to refine our inpstructions
09:25 PM rue_shop1: I'm going to do the post-process stuff on a few of these cast triggers later
09:25 PM rue_shop1: make sure they are good to the end :)
09:25 PM Tom_L: i kept a printout of my parts so i wouldn't forget
09:25 PM rue_shop1: I used to make project books
09:25 PM rue_shop1: booklets anyhow
09:25 PM rue_shop1: with all the schatics and parts lists and stuff
09:26 PM rue_shop1: more deck cleanup , bbl
09:26 PM Tom_L: k
10:09 PM Tom_L: i bet the parts are getting harder to get out because the aluminum is attacking the steel mold
10:09 PM Tom_L: you'd better pick up some spray soon
10:11 PM Tom_L: i worked at a place in another lifetime where they did aluminum molding. i think it was aluminum anyway, they were portable air compressors for tires etc
10:12 PM Tom_L: as i recall they operator would spray something on the mold each time but i never knew what it was
10:12 PM Tom_L: injection molding
10:13 PM Tom_L: i was in the machine department and he was just across the work isle in another department
10:13 PM rue_mohr: might have even been talc
10:14 PM rue_mohr: thats what I use on the muffin tins
10:14 PM Tom_L: it was liquid whatever it was
10:14 PM rue_mohr: or really fine poweder?
10:14 PM Tom_L: dunno
10:14 PM Tom_L: we didn't talk alot but he was an ok guy
10:16 PM Tom_L: the mold looked like steel to me
10:16 PM Tom_L: i'm sure it was water cooled
10:51 PM rue_mohr: thats what the guy I was talking to said
10:51 PM rue_mohr: they water cooled them
11:37 PM rue_mohr: heh, I have a pic of that last batch of repairs, did I show you?
11:37 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1120163.jpg
