12:02 AM rue_shop1: hey! fight and a half, but I have a working verticle bandsaw now!
12:07 AM rue_shop1: Tom_L, stand by, I need to think that thru
12:07 AM rue_shop1: 1/8 is good, but you can neck it to 1/16 AT the part
12:08 AM rue_mohr: turns out the blade guides on those bandsaws are crap
12:09 AM rue_mohr: the one on the $30 one I got broke when I was trying to adjust the shims
12:09 AM rue_mohr: all air pockets in the casting
12:09 AM rue_mohr: and I realized that the one that melted on me also had a bunch of air pockets in it
12:31 AM rue_mohr: re inverting it, I wonder what temp the metal is at which part of the pour
12:32 AM rue_mohr: I suspect its good like it is,
12:32 AM rue_mohr: the current challanges are getting the metal in
12:33 AM rue_mohr: I'v had the idea the vents might be better comming out the side, so that they dont get blocked if metal gets dumped all over the top
12:33 AM rue_mohr: the vents should definitly neck down as they come up to the part, those two vents I cut dont even end up with any metal in them
12:34 AM rue_mohr: I'm still wrestling with why it works perfectly sometimes, and other times I just get the top cone
12:34 AM rue_mohr: I think I need to adjust the tools I'm using to pour it in
12:34 AM rue_mohr: I want to add a spout like a teapot to the ladel
12:35 AM rue_mohr: pour from the bottom
12:35 AM rue_mohr: I'm going to play more
12:37 AM rue_mohr: anything you want me to die-cast for you?
12:38 AM rue_mohr: I'm burning for other ideas now
03:39 AM Tom_L: you want to try one pouring from the bottom to the wider part?
03:39 AM Tom_L: smaller vent holes 1/16" brought out the upper sides
03:40 AM Tom_L: and vents at the top. although if you pour from the narrow end first you may not need those
03:40 AM Tom_L: i think i got a 1/16" ballnose i can use
03:41 AM Tom_L: if you answer when you get up, i may have some time later today to work on one
03:42 AM Tom_L: i originally thought the vents would fill to the brim as you poured it but that's not the case
03:42 AM Tom_L: oh and i'll add thermal reliefs on both sides
08:49 AM rue_mohr: the main vent tunnels should be 1/8
08:49 AM rue_mohr: but you can 50% shallow them at the part
08:50 AM rue_mohr: I think the metal would still catch in the 'shoulders' of the curve
08:51 AM rue_mohr: the thermal relief might help the plate not warp too
08:51 AM rue_mohr: I seemed to be fighting off some warpage
05:36 PM Tom_L: i think i will start with a smaller hunk of iron too... what do you think?
07:11 PM Tom_L: ok rue_mohr
07:26 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/Mold_Rev2/Top_view.jpg
07:26 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/Mold_Rev2/Funnel_view.jpg
07:26 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/Mold_Rev2/Iso_view.jpg
07:27 PM Tom_L: the lighter blue by the vent is 1/16" ballnose with the yellow same as you have
07:28 PM Tom_L: purple is .125" relief slot unless you think it needs to be bigger
07:28 PM Tom_L: overall mold size is .5 narrower
07:29 PM Tom_L: i moved the funnel away from the part a bit so hopefully the hole isn't as big and i made the lip of the funnel bigger
07:29 PM Tom_L: moved the vent to the side
07:31 PM Tom_L: 2.5" x 1.5" mold size
07:59 PM rue_mohr: keep the intake as large as you can, I get the feeling that what we have on the origional is about the limit
07:59 PM rue_mohr: hahah I tried to grab and rotate the drawing :))
07:59 PM rue_mohr: nice
08:00 PM rue_mohr: if you want I'd bet its worth a try!
08:13 PM Tom_L: you see any other improvements?
08:14 PM Tom_L: you want the intake hole same as it was or smaller?
08:14 PM Tom_L: the small of the funnel. the large of the funnel _is_ a little bigger
08:15 PM Tom_L: i guess you can always grind it bigger if you want
08:15 PM Tom_L: blocks are rough cut
08:15 PM Tom_L: dunno if i'll work any more on it tonight
08:17 PM rue_shop1: larger if you can
08:18 PM Tom_L: the small part?
08:18 PM rue_shop1: its plugging at the bottom of the intake,
08:18 PM rue_shop1: I did open it up a bit on mine
08:18 PM Tom_L: ok i thought you wanted it smaller
08:18 PM rue_shop1: just a hair
08:18 PM Tom_L: i can fix that some
08:18 PM rue_shop1: the vest are better necked down more
08:18 PM rue_shop1: but the main fill might need to be bigger
08:18 PM Tom_L: you think the vents are ok where they're at?
08:18 PM rue_shop1: I'm going to modify the ladel
08:19 PM rue_shop1: to have a spout like a teapot
08:19 PM rue_shop1: sure
08:19 PM Tom_L: i can move the funnel deeper into the part
08:19 PM rue_shop1: hey
08:19 PM rue_shop1: lets try something
08:19 PM rue_shop1: can you shift it over to the far side from the vent?
08:20 PM Tom_L: i can put it anywhere
08:20 PM rue_shop1: the idea being its got more room to fill from its side towards the vent
08:20 PM rue_shop1: :) ok
08:20 PM Tom_L: ok
08:20 PM Tom_L: stick around and i'll mod it
08:20 PM rue_shop1: ok, I'm working on a 3d print, making a pcb and waiting for calking to set
08:20 PM rue_shop1: for a fire ext I cut in half
08:21 PM rue_shop1: and put a window on
08:26 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/Mold_Rev2/Top_view1.jpg
08:27 PM Tom_L: mind you it will be a little wider due to the cutter cusp height
08:29 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/Mold_Rev2/Top_view2.jpg
08:29 PM Tom_L: if you want it wider yet i can do that
08:31 PM Tom_L: i made it .020 wider from that post
08:31 PM Tom_L: one sec and i'll update the pics
08:34 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/Mold_Rev2/Top_view1.jpg
08:34 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/Mold_Rev2/Top_view2.jpg
08:35 PM Tom_L: i raised that bottom cutter too to eliminate the step between it and the ballnose
08:35 PM Tom_L: well i think i did anyway
08:43 PM Tom_L: once we agree i'll mirror the part for the other half
08:45 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/Mold_Rev2/Top_view3.jpg
08:46 PM Tom_L: i did that one showing the cuter for the relief slot so you can judge where it will be
08:46 PM Tom_L: (purple)
08:46 PM Tom_L: as deep as the part
08:55 PM Tom_L: relocated the dowel pins too for clearance
09:05 PM rue_mohr: .
09:06 PM rue_mohr: prue position, yes
09:06 PM Tom_L: huh?
09:06 PM Tom_L: oh the funnel?
09:06 PM Tom_L: i'm fixing the vent... hang on
09:07 PM rue_mohr: sprue position looks good
09:07 PM rue_mohr: I dont see anything to worry about
09:07 PM rue_mohr: but, its not like I know :)
09:07 PM Tom_L: one update on the way.. just a sec
09:10 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/Mold_Rev2/Top_view4.jpg
09:10 PM Tom_L: i redid the vent due to clearance
09:10 PM Tom_L: the arc is 1//16 into 1/8" where the yellow starts
09:11 PM Tom_L: on the right
09:11 PM rue_shop1: k, shallowing out the 1/8 is ok if you want to skip a bit change
09:11 PM Tom_L: i think that should be ok.. do you?
09:12 PM Tom_L: it may be too hard on the 1/16 cutter. i'll see
09:12 PM rue_shop1: sure
09:12 PM Tom_L: i got a few of em
09:12 PM rue_shop1: well dont break cutters on my acccord
09:12 PM Tom_L: if they break they break
09:12 PM rue_shop1: a 1/32 cut with the 1/8 bit should be ok
09:12 PM rue_shop1: hmm
09:12 PM Tom_L: i'm also dialing in my tools for steel cutting
09:13 PM Tom_L: i've got 2 tool libraries
09:13 PM Tom_L: only thing i'm not sure about is that ridge i told you to sand out
09:14 PM Tom_L: i think i fixed that bottom cutter where it blends into the ballnose for the profile
09:14 PM rue_shop1: ok
09:15 PM rue_shop1: was the ballnose offset different?
09:15 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/Mold13.jpg
09:15 PM Tom_L: i just shortened that flat cut a bit
09:15 PM rue_shop1: k
09:15 PM Tom_L: it didn't appear too bad on your part
09:15 PM rue_shop1: I still have to get a can of PAM
09:15 PM rue_shop1: (spray)
09:16 PM Tom_L: so once i get this i'll have 24? i think of the parts i cut plus this mold
09:16 PM Tom_L: anything else you need?
09:17 PM Tom_L: did you try dipping the mold?
09:17 PM Tom_L: i wonder if that would work since i'm moving the vent
09:18 PM Tom_L: or would it just cool the aluminum too much
09:18 PM rue_shop1: 24?
09:18 PM rue_shop1: its not easy to just dip
09:18 PM rue_shop1: were talking 660c
09:19 PM rue_shop1: mostly close prox
09:19 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/A3_batch/Batch8.jpg
09:19 PM rue_shop1: hahahaha
09:19 PM rue_shop1: ;
09:19 PM Tom_L: i'm keeping the 4 on the right
09:19 PM rue_shop1: :) sure
09:19 PM Tom_L: maybe
09:19 PM Tom_L: at least one
09:19 PM rue_shop1: I'm surprised it didn't get manotinous after 10
09:28 PM Tom_L: i ran them in batches of 8
09:28 PM Tom_L: so 3 batches
09:29 PM Tom_L: maybe a couple hrs per batch.. i didn't keep track
09:30 PM Tom_L: everything done on the cnc except the big hole and i was afraid it would screw up the threads on my fixture
09:30 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/A3_batch/Batch3.jpg
09:31 PM Tom_L: it worked out fair
09:31 PM Tom_L: the left side is just for the bottom chamfer
09:32 PM zhanx: i am jealous
09:33 PM Tom_L: i would have had 9 but i broke a tap off in the fixture where you see i skipped one
10:10 PM Tom_L: ok i think both halves are programmed now
10:13 PM zhanx: i ordered a walabot rue_shop1
10:28 PM rue_shop1: ?
10:30 PM zhanx: walabot.com
10:35 PM Tom_L: for work?
10:35 PM zhanx: yep
10:36 PM zhanx: metal stud wall today, took me forever to find the place with out cross braces
10:36 PM zhanx: i wasted over an hour
10:38 PM zhanx: Tom_L, it was that or another inspection camera and i keep breaking those
10:44 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/Mold_Rev2/Top_view5.jpg
10:44 PM Tom_L: ok i think it's ready to go
10:47 PM Tom_L: rue_mohr, note any last minute changes by morning. i'll probably start on it then
11:16 PM rue_shop1: :)
11:16 PM rue_shop1: no hurry
11:16 PM rue_shop1: I'm still playing with the first one
