12:19 AM zhanx: forgot to add this to the autojoin list
12:23 AM zhanx: https://www.tindie.com/products/mux/4-port-nanohub-tiny-usb-hub-for-hacking-projects/ came in
01:02 AM rue_shop1: zhanx,
01:02 AM rue_shop1: you hit your fiber line with a shovel?
01:03 AM rue_shop1: Tom_L, cool, sorry, visitors :)
01:03 AM rue_shop1: I'm game for the J vent
01:05 AM rue_shop1: Tom_L, some intuition says that a vent out the bottom is silly, but when you look at the size and play it in slow motion, the metal comes in like a piston, so it should work
09:39 AM Tom_L: rue_bed, wake up!
01:58 PM rue_mohr: just back from garage saling with ma, followed up by a visit to the scrapper who isnt' open
01:58 PM rue_mohr: so my truck is stuck with a full load of metal
01:58 PM rue_mohr: :/
02:22 PM Tom_L: i'm afraid i may not be able to make your mold
02:23 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/Mold6.jpg
02:23 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/Mold7.jpg
02:23 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/Mold8.jpg
02:23 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/Mold9.jpg
02:23 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/Mold10.jpg
02:23 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/Mold11.jpg
02:23 PM Tom_L: because it's done.
02:32 PM rue_mohr: !!
02:32 PM rue_mohr: wow nic
02:33 PM rue_mohr: do you think it'll work?
02:33 PM rue_mohr: how many passes was that bottom J?
02:33 PM rue_mohr: it looks like 1...?
02:33 PM Tom_L: do you think it will make it to canada?
02:33 PM Tom_L: 1
02:33 PM rue_mohr: wow that a hell of a cut
02:33 PM Tom_L: 1/8" endmill at .0625 depth
02:33 PM Tom_L: ball mill
02:33 PM rue_mohr: yea
02:33 PM Tom_L: half circle
02:34 PM Tom_L: video to come
02:34 PM rue_mohr: thats pretty exciting
02:34 PM rue_mohr: I was all set that it would be super complex
02:35 PM Tom_L: the fill hole didn't end up quite like i expected because i had to move the arc around a little
02:35 PM rue_mohr: so if I preheat it to about 300c, and pour hot and quick, I wonder how it'll go
02:35 PM Tom_L: i could fix it to be more round but it's done
02:35 PM Tom_L: you can always grind it out
02:35 PM rue_mohr: lets try it!
02:36 PM Tom_L: so what should i declare it as?
02:36 PM rue_mohr: how did you do the hole in the top?
02:36 PM Tom_L: what hole?
02:36 PM rue_mohr: injection mold
02:36 PM rue_mohr: the taper
02:36 PM Tom_L: ballnose
02:36 PM rue_mohr: was that fro the top or the side
02:36 PM rue_mohr: that came out well
02:36 PM Tom_L: side
02:37 PM rue_mohr: so this would be your first injection mold?
02:37 PM Tom_itx: https://youtu.be/irnLNmEaym0
02:38 PM Tom_L: full width cut on a 3/16 endmill to rough the pocket out
02:38 PM rue_mohr: thats still with the sherline motor right?
02:38 PM Tom_L: yes
02:38 PM rue_mohr: its doin good
02:38 PM rue_mohr: do you know how much power its pushing?
02:38 PM Tom_L: no coolant on the motor
02:38 PM Tom_L: no
02:39 PM Tom_L: i have a power meter but i don't think it will work as i expected so i haven't hooked it up yet
02:39 PM Tom_L: less than a 5A fuse
02:39 PM rue_mohr: HSS bit?
02:39 PM Tom_L: carbide
02:39 PM rue_mohr: ah
02:39 PM rue_mohr: I'm not good with carbide cause I dont push it hard enough
02:39 PM Tom_L: i squared the blocks with hss
02:40 PM rue_mohr: 8000 rpm?
02:40 PM Tom_L: 2500 t0 3000
02:40 PM rue_mohr: and those coolant things work nice, I got to get mine going
02:40 PM rue_mohr: for the lathe atleast
02:41 PM Tom_L: it makes a little mess but not too bad
02:41 PM rue_mohr: better than flood cooling
02:41 PM Tom_L: most of it drains into a jug
02:41 PM rue_mohr: heh, the z reset, that thing can move pretty quick!
02:42 PM rue_mohr: did you make that collette
02:42 PM Tom_L: no
02:42 PM rue_mohr: you made 4 didn't you?
02:43 PM Tom_L: for drills but i'm having trouble drilling them on center
02:43 PM rue_mohr: :/
02:43 PM rue_mohr: lathe?
02:43 PM Tom_L: one wobbles some but it works
02:43 PM Tom_L: yeah
02:43 PM Tom_L: i may try something else on the next one
02:43 PM rue_mohr: do you have an independent 4 jaw?
02:43 PM rue_mohr: do it the hard way?
02:43 PM Tom_L: yes
02:43 PM Tom_L: i did
02:44 PM rue_mohr: hmm
02:44 PM Tom_L: the lathe is old and worn
02:44 PM rue_mohr: nice! I wonder if we can get them to canada
02:45 PM Tom_L: i would kinda hate to loose them
02:45 PM rue_mohr: do you have my phone number to put on it?
02:45 PM rue_mohr: we could throw tracking on
02:45 PM Tom_L: no
02:45 PM Tom_L: i'll send it usps probably
02:48 PM Tom_L: if you keep the aluminum pot hot, maybe you can do several at once
02:53 PM rue_mohr: if it works, I'd aim at a gang mold
02:54 PM rue_mohr: but the big question is if it'll work at all
07:05 PM Tom_shop: ok i'm either fixing the pour hole or screwing up the mold now...
07:07 PM rue_shop1: :)
07:07 PM rue_shop1: fixing the sprue?
07:09 PM Tom_shop: pics when it's done
07:09 PM Tom_shop: it was just buggin me
07:10 PM Tom_shop: it was also suggested to me i only needed to cut the vent in half the mold which makes sense
07:10 PM Tom_shop: too late...
07:17 PM rue_mohr: half?
07:18 PM rue_mohr: oh yea
07:18 PM Tom_shop: only a couple min on that cut anyway
07:19 PM Tom_shop: P1 almost done
07:19 PM rue_mohr: think of all the things you could cast!
07:22 PM Tom_shop: does look better
07:22 PM Tom_shop: cutting P2 now
07:33 PM rue_mohr: I have to leave now get cat food get back home feed cats leave for movie
07:34 PM Tom_shop: P2 almost done
07:34 PM Tom_shop: will post an update
07:34 PM Tom_shop: what movie?
07:35 PM rue_mohr: avengets 4
07:35 PM Tom_shop: 4 more cuts
07:36 PM Tom_shop: 1
07:37 PM Tom_shop: k
07:38 PM zhanx: saw
07:38 PM zhanx: can i spoil it for rue?
07:38 PM Tom_shop: sure go ahead. i won't see it
07:39 PM Tom_shop: mmm i'm still off a bit
07:39 PM Tom_shop: dammit
07:39 PM Tom_shop: guess i should have measured it instead of guessing
07:40 PM Tom_shop: meh, he can live with it..
07:58 PM rue_mohr: ok i'm ahead a bit
07:58 PM rue_mohr: well lets see!
07:58 PM Tom_L: still not quite round. but i'm done with it
07:58 PM rue_mohr: the cone is trickey?
07:59 PM Tom_L: i should have measured it but i just guessed
07:59 PM rue_mohr: i have 30 mins
07:59 PM Tom_L: one pic..
08:00 PM rue_mohr: I wonder how hard a mold for a cast project case would be, definitly a different level of mold
08:01 PM rue_mohr: so, my peak detector circuit is 'leaking' faster than it should be
08:02 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/Mold10.jpg
08:02 PM Tom_L: old
08:02 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/Mold12.jpg
08:02 PM Tom_L: new
08:02 PM rue_mohr: closer for sure
08:03 PM Tom_L: should have gone whole but i went half instead :D
08:03 PM rue_mohr: one of my largest curiosities is if the mold will come apart without a fight
08:04 PM Tom_L: if you add threaded screws to one half it will
08:04 PM Tom_L: i'll leave that up to you
08:04 PM rue_mohr: I think with shirinkage it'll be fine
08:05 PM Tom_L: i did notice a little step at the top where the flat em and ballnose crossed
08:06 PM Tom_L: you may want to blend that a little with a dremel
08:06 PM rue_mohr: yea, so the expansion co-eff of steel is ~13 and alum is ~23
08:06 PM rue_mohr: so the alum should pull away from the steel pretty hard as it cools
08:06 PM Tom_L: i didn't notice it at first
08:07 PM Tom_L: if i raised the flat cutter up a tiny bit on the final cut it may go away
08:07 PM rue_mohr: right now it takes about 15 hours to cut them, then we have to drill them and hand round the finger edges
08:07 PM rue_mohr: and we need 1/4" sheet to make them from
08:08 PM rue_mohr: if we can cast them, life gets easier
08:08 PM Tom_L: the radius is pretty smooth
08:08 PM Tom_L: just needs blended a little
08:08 PM Tom_L: pic...
08:09 PM rue_mohr: I really dont mind some hand polishing
08:09 PM rue_mohr: finish is another point of curiosity for me
08:09 PM rue_mohr: with sand casting the steam pushes off the edge a little
08:10 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/Mold13.jpg
08:10 PM rue_mohr: other than that, its the grain size, of which mine is a tad course
08:10 PM rue_mohr: np
08:10 PM Tom_L: pics make it look worse
08:11 PM Tom_L: but technically any mold would be polished
08:11 PM rue_mohr: the shape of the sprue might even help pop it out of the mold
08:11 PM rue_mohr: it'll 'pinch out'
08:12 PM rue_mohr: think it'll need pre-heating?
08:13 PM Tom_L: i wonder if you could put pins where the holes are supposed to be and then knock them out just like the others
08:13 PM Tom_L: then you wouldn't have to drill em
08:14 PM Tom_L: guess you can try one cold and see
08:14 PM Tom_L: it's small enough it might work
08:15 PM rue_mohr: it might just pop out
08:15 PM rue_mohr: movie, bye!
08:15 PM Tom_L: i'd consider pinning the holes
