08:23 PM Tom_L: .
09:16 PM rue_shop1: hmm
09:16 PM rue_shop1: I left one element out of my circuit design when I started assembling it and now I dont know if I can fit it in nicely
09:17 PM rue_shop1: I see z's fiber is working out nicely
09:17 PM rue_shop1: maybe he dug it up :)
09:21 PM rue_shop1: board dig, need a soic CD4066
09:24 PM Tom_L: huh, just noticed he was gone
09:26 PM rue_shop1: I cant wait to ask if a shovel was involved
09:29 PM Tom_L: did i mention the competetion my kid was in here?
09:30 PM Tom_L: probably not
09:44 PM rue_shop1: you did, are the results in?!
09:45 PM Tom_L: yeah he came home with a gold medal
09:45 PM Tom_L: which allows him to go to the national event
09:45 PM Tom_L: but
09:45 PM rue_shop1: got to raise money to get there?
09:46 PM Tom_L: the head of a parent company of a large machine shop got wind of it and hunted him down
09:46 PM Tom_L: and now he's got a job without persuing it
09:46 PM Tom_L: his trip is 100% paid
09:46 PM rue_shop1: hmm
09:46 PM Tom_L: there is a good chance his team could also win national
09:46 PM rue_shop1: hard call
09:47 PM rue_shop1: eggs and baskets
09:47 PM rue_shop1: crossed with opportunity
09:47 PM Tom_L: he just finished HS
09:47 PM Tom_L: with 2 years of college he gaind during hs
09:47 PM Tom_L: they will work with him on that
09:48 PM Tom_L: they have building size gantry mills etc there
09:48 PM rue_shop1: heh
09:48 PM Tom_L: iirc he said 25' work table
09:49 PM Tom_L: some rather serious machinery
09:49 PM rue_shop1: :)
09:49 PM Tom_L: not bad for his 1st 'serious' job
09:49 PM rue_shop1: petrolium fueled planes?
09:50 PM Tom_L: they contract for alot of vendors
09:50 PM Tom_L: global
09:51 PM rue_shop1: any of those vendors researching electric planes?
09:51 PM Tom_L: no clue
09:51 PM Tom_L: requires clearance to gain entry
09:51 PM Tom_L: NDA and all that stuff
09:52 PM rue_shop1: I'm surprised you dont have it already :)
09:52 PM Tom_L: hah
09:52 PM rue_shop1: is he finished scanning that plane yet?
09:52 PM Tom_L: funny thing is he went in as a 'programmer or draftsman'
09:52 PM Tom_L: and they hired him as a machinist
09:53 PM Tom_L: no this is the younger of the 2
09:53 PM rue_shop1: sounds like a lack of properly set up employment bins
09:53 PM rue_shop1: :)
09:53 PM Tom_L: the plane project will take at least 2 years
09:53 PM Tom_L: that's the older one
09:53 PM Tom_L: they have probably a dozen planes to take apart
09:54 PM Tom_L: every variation of the f18
09:54 PM rue_shop1: I'm worried about the sherline
09:54 PM Tom_L: why?
09:55 PM Tom_L: i'm about to take mine apart and put it in a box of parts
09:55 PM Tom_L: and take the cabinet apart
09:55 PM rue_shop1: the Y slider was loose, I checked it out, the last user slipped a shim into the gib, and it was still loose, I put in a larger shim
09:55 PM Tom_L: since i have the mill now
09:55 PM rue_shop1: we have done 200 spryaers, if its put 2 hours into each one
09:55 PM rue_shop1: how long are these things good for...
09:55 PM Tom_L: no idea
09:55 PM rue_shop1: "just" did the brushes
09:55 PM Tom_L: that's a fair batch of sprayers
09:56 PM Tom_L: having fun doing them?
09:56 PM rue_shop1: I think this thing was pretty worn when I got it, and I borrowed it
09:56 PM Tom_L: do you lube the slides?
09:56 PM rue_shop1: well, we tweaked the program to cut the ledge so we dont have to hand route it and thats AWESOME
09:56 PM rue_shop1: yea I give it lots of oil all over
09:56 PM rue_shop1: :)
09:56 PM rue_shop1: .. its borrowed
09:56 PM Tom_L: what ledge?
09:57 PM rue_shop1: that 'eye' that holds the can
09:57 PM Tom_L: oh the fork?
09:57 PM rue_shop1: it had a step in that edge
09:57 PM Tom_L: i sent you a version of that i think
09:57 PM rue_shop1: to slip under part of the top of the can
09:57 PM rue_shop1: yes
09:57 PM Tom_L: i have one in my bag o rue parts
09:58 PM rue_shop1: we removed the front 'flaps' at some point and we haven't seen anymore break off
09:58 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/bag_o_parts.jpg
09:58 PM rue_shop1: but not having to hand route that saves TONES of time
09:58 PM Tom_L: A9
09:59 PM rue_shop1: yes, you have the step in there
09:59 PM Tom_L: yeah i remember you had to cut that by hand right?
09:59 PM rue_shop1: today I was gonna work on another jig
09:59 PM rue_shop1: we have to cut a slot in the end of the body tube for it
10:00 PM rue_shop1: yes, for the ledge I'd made a mini table router with the dremel
10:00 PM rue_shop1: it was horrid
10:00 PM Tom_L: that's an easy jig to make
10:00 PM rue_shop1: so tube slotting
10:00 PM rue_shop1: I have some extra tables saws around
10:00 PM rue_shop1: I was gonna make a skid with a jig to hold the pipes
10:00 PM Tom_L: how big is the slot?
10:00 PM rue_shop1: its 1/8" wide and about 6mm deep
10:00 PM rue_shop1: we hand file them
10:01 PM rue_shop1: its horrid
10:01 PM Tom_L: how long?
10:01 PM rue_shop1: 6mm
10:01 PM Tom_L: so .125 x 6 x 6?
10:01 PM rue_shop1: er, I can take a pic
10:01 PM rue_shop1: point being I got part way on the jig and it stared raining, one of the tablesaws is shot
10:02 PM Tom_L: i found out how tough my mill is last night
10:03 PM Tom_L: i was .125 too deep on a chamfer cut in steel and it vibrated all over the place but cut it just fine
10:03 PM rue_shop1: hahaha
10:03 PM rue_shop1: sweet!
10:04 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Snapper/Hi_vac_tip.jpg
10:04 PM Tom_L: the chamfer on those holes
10:04 PM Tom_L: the holes are milled btw, not drilled
10:05 PM Tom_L: that's about a .045" chamfer
10:05 PM Tom_L: one pass
10:05 PM Tom_L: using a 45 deg spot drill
10:06 PM * Tom_L waits for the slot pic
10:06 PM rue_shop1: the time log on the console shows 40 hours since the program was last started
10:07 PM rue_shop1: ... you did hardened steel in your machine!!!!???
10:07 PM Tom_L: it's an edger blade so maybe
10:07 PM Tom_L: it's not _that_ hard
10:07 PM Tom_L: but maybe some
10:08 PM rue_shop1: hmm
10:08 PM Tom_L: i normally just throw them out but had the idea to re'purpose the leftovers
10:09 PM Tom_L: dirt etc wear the tips down over time
10:12 PM rue_shop1: I'm also trying to keep half an eye on how long these cheap chineese bits are lasting
10:12 PM rue_shop1: think I can etch-resharpen them?
10:12 PM Tom_L: i wouldn't mess with it
10:13 PM Tom_L: hard to get both flutes exactly the same
10:14 PM Tom_L: the edge breaks off so if you tried to etch it, it would just keep that shape
10:15 PM Tom_L: i've done drills and lathe tools but don't bother with endmills
10:15 PM Tom_L: i was talking to my local guy today about cutters
10:16 PM Tom_L: aluminum use a 7deg angle while if you want to cut steel you would want a 3deg
10:17 PM Tom_L: he was showing me some cutters that have variable flute angles to help eliminate harmonics
10:17 PM Tom_L: each flute is a minutely different angle to eliminate ringing which is the major cause of tool failure
10:18 PM Tom_L: some of them had a flute twist of 60 deg which is darn near like a screw
10:19 PM rue_shop1: I wonder what angle these are, i think their for wood, so too high
10:21 PM Tom_L: https://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/cnc-machining/variable-flute-end-mills-118499/
10:21 PM Tom_L: read part of that
10:21 PM Tom_L: proper tool geometry makes all the difference
10:22 PM rue_shop1: the speed/feed I got going is running quite well
10:22 PM Tom_L: yeah once you find that is half the battle
10:22 PM Tom_L: proper tools would increase your productivity though
10:23 PM rue_shop1: heat
10:23 PM rue_shop1: I have no cooling
10:24 PM rue_shop1: I could double the cut speed with cooling
10:24 PM Tom_L: i thought you did
10:24 PM rue_shop1: the alum gets too hot and starts sticking
10:24 PM rue_shop1: I have a puffer for chips, thats it
10:24 PM Tom_L: the spurt thing with the controller
10:24 PM Tom_L: oh
10:24 PM rue_shop1: yea
10:24 PM Tom_L: try soap?
10:24 PM rue_shop1: ...no
10:25 PM rue_shop1: like water soap mix?
10:25 PM Tom_L: see what it does once
10:25 PM rue_shop1: It doesn't have a catch or a shroud
10:25 PM Tom_L: yeah
10:25 PM Tom_L: mine drains into a cutoff gal jug
10:26 PM Tom_L: some of it anyway
10:26 PM Tom_L: i have leaks
10:26 PM rue_shop1: I dont have spray protection or anything
10:26 PM rue_shop1: I'd be working from scratch
10:26 PM Tom_L: on the sherline i did a hand sprayer sometimes
10:27 PM Tom_L: or dripped oil on it
10:27 PM rue_shop1: not standing there for an hour spritzing cuts
10:27 PM rue_shop1: for 2 hours I start it and walk away
10:27 PM Tom_L: how many robot arms do you have now???????
10:27 PM rue_shop1: ""
10:27 PM rue_shop1: hah
10:27 PM rue_shop1: point taken
10:28 PM Tom_L: every now and then i stop to talk to my tool guy
10:28 PM Tom_L: he's an old fart but knows alot about tooling
10:35 PM rue_shop1: yep
10:36 PM rue_shop1: nothings made out here, so I'm up the creek
10:36 PM rue_shop1: you shoudl see the current fiasco trying to get more piano wire for springs
10:36 PM rue_shop1: ha and M4 screws for plastic
10:36 PM rue_shop1: :(
10:41 PM Tom_L: what size wire?
10:43 PM Tom_L: i've got maybe 21ga or so
10:54 PM rue_shop1: our main wire is...
10:54 PM rue_shop1: 0.055
10:54 PM rue_shop1: but we want to try up a guage
10:55 PM Tom_L: http://www.pianosupplies.com/Merchant2/PianoWireChart.html
10:56 PM Tom_L: 25 ga
10:56 PM rue_shop1: yea, how much to get it to canada tho
10:56 PM Tom_L: i doubt i have that
10:56 PM Tom_L: but i can get it
10:56 PM rue_shop1: most us sellers wont ship to canada
10:56 PM rue_shop1: and when they will, its' usually $50
10:56 PM rue_shop1: hmm
10:57 PM Tom_L: i don't think i use more than 21 ga generally
10:57 PM Tom_L: but i can get any size mfg'd
10:57 PM rue_shop1: I have to give it a go myself
10:58 PM rue_shop1: the other guy has been working on it, and nobody every understands him correctly
10:58 PM Tom_L: try mapes, they have top quality wire
10:59 PM rue_shop1: setting up with vendors is annoying, were using
10:59 PM rue_shop1: I forgoet the name
10:59 PM rue_shop1: working on a pcb
11:00 PM Tom_L: shipping is getting horrible even here
11:00 PM Tom_L: mapes is a wire mfg not a vendoe
11:00 PM Tom_L: r
11:01 PM Tom_L: so is roslo
11:01 PM Tom_L: roslau
11:03 PM rue_shop1: acklands-granger
