07:57 PM rue_mohr: cnc puncvh cute
08:00 PM rue_mohr: tooling must be a fortune
08:00 PM Tom_L: i'm sure it's not cheap
08:01 PM Tom_L: but neither would similar manual labor
08:01 PM Tom_L: and they don't go on strike
08:01 PM Tom_L: i like watching machines i haven't seen run
08:02 PM Tom_L: an old HS friend worked a punch press
08:02 PM Tom_L: they could stamp some pretty thick material
08:03 PM rue_mohr: I have some 1/2" plate that was sheer cut 8-|
08:03 PM Tom_L: yeah
08:03 PM Tom_L: he works for an oil industry mfg
08:04 PM Tom_L: refineries etc
08:07 PM Tom_L: they do alot of SS
09:10 PM __M00N__: if (window != NULL && mac_wininfo(window)->key != NULL)
09:10 PM __M00N__: (*mac_wininfo(window)->key)(window, event);
09:11 PM rue_mohr: if ((window != NULL) && (mac_wininfo(window)->key != NULL))
09:13 PM rue_mohr: https://goshdarnfunctionpointers.com/
09:20 PM rue_mohr: http://paste.debian.net/1070767/
09:25 PM Tom_L: rue_mohr
09:26 PM Tom_L: you have sherline threaded tool holders right?
09:31 PM rue_mohr: hmm
09:31 PM Tom_L: i figured what i needed..
09:38 PM rue_mohr: threaded tool holders.... dont think so, its all shank
09:39 PM Tom_L: the ones that fit on the spindle thread
09:42 PM Tom_L: just trying to figure if i can ream one out to 5/8" and have enough left to tighten the tool
09:48 PM rue_mohr: no their all compression collets
09:48 PM Tom_L: mmm
09:48 PM Tom_L: i've got those but never use em
09:49 PM Tom_L: i need some more of the threaded ones
09:49 PM Tom_L: may try to make some
09:52 PM Tom_L: i've got some 1" brass rod but i think i should use steel
09:52 PM Tom_L: don't have any that size
09:53 PM * RonoldoMoon tests my new font
09:54 PM Tom_L: looks pink
09:54 PM RonoldoMoon: :P
09:54 PM Tom_L: what client?
09:54 PM RonoldoMoon: quassel, just trying for the first time
09:55 PM Tom_L: never heard of it
09:56 PM * RonoldoMoon shrugs
09:56 PM Tom_L: i like hexchat
09:56 PM RonoldoMoon: it seems nice
09:57 PM RonoldoMoon: im not too hot on hexchat though its all iv been using for the past year or more
09:57 PM Tom_L: this is mirc but i've got hexchat on all the PCs
09:57 PM rue_mohr: xchat was fine with me
09:57 PM Tom_L: same as hexchat
09:57 PM Tom_L: but xchat isn't supported
09:57 PM rue_mohr: better than wining mirc
09:57 PM RonoldoMoon: i like irssi but i dont know all the keys
09:58 PM Tom_L: yeah
09:58 PM rue_mohr: what happened to bitchx?
09:58 PM Tom_L: i just got used to this
09:58 PM RonoldoMoon: that bitch had to walk!
10:01 PM RonoldoMoon: Peace homies
10:13 PM rue_mohr: hows furrywolf
10:16 PM Tom_L: does moon live up there near you?
10:16 PM rue_mohr: yup
10:16 PM rue_mohr: he comes by randomly and uses the shop
10:16 PM rue_mohr: part of my security system
10:17 PM rue_mohr: there are 4 people now who do that
10:17 PM rue_mohr: it can be really busy here when I get home
10:17 PM rue_mohr: I'v had a few days there were parking challanges
10:18 PM Tom_L: you trust more than i do
10:18 PM rue_mohr: all people I closely know
10:19 PM Tom_L: i don't have any hard data on speed or feed for these thread mills
10:19 PM Tom_L: wish i had some
10:20 PM rue_mohr: hmm
10:20 PM Tom_L: i went really slow on the first test
10:20 PM Tom_L: i broke one a while back because my geometry was wrong
10:21 PM Tom_L: partially what sparked me to do the macro
10:21 PM Tom_L: so i don't have to think about it as much
10:21 PM Tom_L: but that fail was the first iteration of this
10:22 PM rue_mohr: so its just one tooth?
10:22 PM Tom_L: so cutting steel i figure maybe 1000 rpm?
10:22 PM Tom_L: no
10:22 PM Tom_L: some have 3 some 4 etc
10:22 PM rue_mohr: like an ID threading bit on a lathe?
10:23 PM Tom_L: http://ep.yimg.com/ay/yhst-94661700992560/single-pitch-thread-mills-1.gif
10:23 PM Tom_L: sorta
10:23 PM rue_mohr: if its single pitch, couldn't they stack teeth?
10:23 PM Tom_L: they have that style too
10:24 PM rue_mohr: ah
10:24 PM Tom_L: http://ep.yimg.com/ay/yhst-94661700992560/un-threads-3.gif
10:24 PM Tom_L: same idea more teeth
10:24 PM Tom_L: it's not a tap
10:24 PM rue_mohr: furrywolf, have you been up to anything technical?
10:24 PM Tom_L: you still cut a helix with them
10:25 PM rue_mohr: Tom_L, that makes sense
10:25 PM Tom_L: the single point are slower but more versatile
10:25 PM rue_mohr: uh
10:25 PM rue_mohr: its for single pitch thread
10:25 PM rue_mohr: how versatile can you get
10:25 PM Tom_L: covers a range
10:25 PM rue_mohr: oh
10:26 PM Tom_L: http://onlinecarbide.com/sipithmi.html
10:26 PM Tom_L: they all have a pitch range
10:26 PM rue_mohr: what are the ones you have?
10:26 PM Tom_L: you study the geometry and you can see why they only work for certain sizes
10:26 PM rue_mohr: well yea
10:27 PM Tom_L: the tooth is too small on a 1/4" to cut a 3/4" thread
10:27 PM Tom_L: it would be too shallow
10:27 PM Tom_L: i measured one and the tooth on a full cut comes right up to the shank
10:28 PM Tom_L: so it needs to be right or it would rub
10:28 PM Tom_L: i had a #10 and the 1/4"
10:29 PM Tom_L: broke the #10
10:30 PM rue_mohr: furrywolf, garage sale finds? anything?
10:30 PM Tom_L: does 1000rpm seem reasonable for steel?
10:31 PM rue_mohr: no
10:31 PM Tom_L: 800?
10:31 PM rue_mohr: something I was looking at latley used 11000 and up
10:31 PM rue_mohr: 8-|
10:31 PM Tom_L: i base my feeds etc off chip load
10:31 PM rue_mohr: iirc my new machine tops out at 12000
10:32 PM furrywolf: not many yard sales in winter... last week I got a dust collector for the router table if I ever decide to set it up, a couple propane tanks, some polyurethane (of the wood finish variety), an a/c can side tap, and a few other random things, from a business closing sale.
10:32 PM Tom_L: but i hardly ever cut steel on my machines
10:32 PM rue_mohr: furrywolf, cool!
10:32 PM furrywolf: https://lostcoastoutpost.com/2019/feb/27/photos-humboldt-flood-day-above/ the weather here has been a little wet for yard sales.
10:33 PM rue_mohr: I need to work out a motor for my new cnc
10:33 PM Tom_L: supposed to get -1 here in a day or two
10:33 PM Tom_L: spindle motor?
10:33 PM rue_mohr: yea
10:33 PM rue_mohr: I have a brushless washing machine motor,
10:34 PM rue_mohr: but from what I can figure, the motor control is embedded into the same controller that does the cycle control
10:34 PM rue_mohr: :/
10:34 PM Tom_L: http://electronicsam.com/images/greenmachine/20190222_155408.jpg
10:34 PM rue_mohr: $$$$
10:34 PM Tom_L: that STMBL is an open source? drive
10:34 PM rue_mohr: I only have $.5
10:34 PM Tom_L: you say
10:35 PM rue_mohr: cant spend $400 on every project I do
10:35 PM furrywolf: I have a brushless washing machine motor too, but it's still in my washing machine, where it'll hopefully remain for a while. :P
10:35 PM Tom_L: that guy does alot of lcnc testing
10:35 PM rue_mohr: yea you guys get into toys that are WAY outa my pricerange
10:35 PM rue_mohr: I ahve a split in what to build
10:35 PM Tom_L: i don't get many
10:36 PM rue_mohr: so I'll prolly do both
10:36 PM rue_mohr: one machine like furrywolfs, big a a bit sloppy
10:36 PM rue_mohr: and another with a target more like yours tom
10:36 PM rue_mohr: :D I want all your cncs!
10:37 PM Tom_L: i'd like to be able to fix the spindle on it
10:37 PM Tom_L: but haven't found a good solution yet
10:37 PM rue_mohr: yea, all those brushless I looked at are WAY too pricey
10:37 PM Tom_L: hate to give up all these holders for something else
10:38 PM rue_mohr: even trying to go into aircraft or powered bike motors
10:38 PM Tom_L: so i was looking at just motors & control
10:38 PM Tom_L: treadmill
10:38 PM Tom_L: maybe
10:38 PM rue_mohr: that brushed motor has performed amazing
10:38 PM rue_mohr: for a used 9.6V drill motor
10:38 PM rue_mohr: I been REALLY impressed
10:38 PM rue_mohr: esp that the first one there wore out the bushings before the brushes
10:39 PM Tom_L: i'm not worrying about wearing out brushes
10:39 PM rue_mohr: (too bad the damn armature didn't survive)
10:39 PM Tom_L: it doesn't get used enough
10:39 PM rue_mohr: I had like 50% left on the brushes when it blew up
10:40 PM rue_mohr: I'm also really impressed what we have done with a 1/8" O-ring as a drive belt
10:40 PM rue_mohr: the fellow doing the paint sprayers took and put a 1/8" bit on that machine and went and milled a head
10:40 PM Tom_L: there's an O ring store here i can get just about any O ring i'd ever need
10:40 PM rue_mohr: and it did it!
10:41 PM rue_mohr: I want to double up the O rings, so I might not lose a bit if one gives out
10:41 PM Tom_L: that's why i went with timing belts
10:41 PM Tom_L: no slip
10:41 PM Tom_L: i was burning up belts left & right
10:41 PM rue_mohr: slip isn't an issue, the interrupter is on the spindle
10:42 PM rue_mohr: at like average 8k we have put like 200 hrs on that thing
10:43 PM Tom_L: nice
10:43 PM rue_mohr: its thru the roof as far as bang/buck
10:43 PM Tom_L: i don't see a profit return on the mill yet
10:43 PM Tom_L: usually i can make my hobby pay for itself
10:44 PM Tom_L: that helps afford the decent tooling etc
10:44 PM rue_mohr: see I barely put $20 in that machine I made in the first place, technically I think its paid itself about 3 times over re those paint sprayers
10:44 PM Tom_L: just like that cad cam i bought many years back
10:44 PM rue_mohr: oh yea
10:44 PM rue_mohr: I remember you commenting on that
10:44 PM Tom_L: i recooped that in a year
10:45 PM Tom_L: i forget now but it was like 6-8K
10:45 PM furrywolf: I've never made a profit on any tool I've bought. the only money I've ever made has been from getting a job and going to work.
10:45 PM rue_mohr: that woudl normally be the case for me
10:45 PM Tom_L: i do that too but still like to get the hobby to support itself
10:46 PM Tom_L: i did ok on the programmers
10:46 PM rue_mohr: we shoot me a little side money on this paint sprayer thing for tool maintenance
10:47 PM Tom_L: btw i got a sack full of those cases if you need some
10:47 PM Tom_L: probably 200+ of the avrs
10:50 PM Tom_L: i wonder if anybody still uses em
10:50 PM rue_mohr: u4?
10:50 PM Tom_L: 2 iirc
10:51 PM Tom_L: yeah U2
10:52 PM rue_mohr: how did you end up with so much tail?
10:52 PM Tom_L: eggs are cheaper by the dozen
10:52 PM Tom_L: i got them by the tray
10:53 PM rue_mohr: wow
10:53 PM Tom_L: what's left is just bonus
10:53 PM rue_mohr: thats worth a pro-mini knockoff
10:54 PM rue_mohr: you dont want em?
10:54 PM rue_mohr: er, hmm
10:54 PM Tom_L: i'll never use em
10:54 PM rue_mohr: what did you do the pcb design in?
10:54 PM Tom_L: eagle
10:54 PM rue_mohr: how much are they worth?
10:54 PM rue_mohr: hmm
10:55 PM rue_mohr: did you end up with crystals too?
10:55 PM Tom_L: i probably still have some
10:55 PM rue_mohr: hmm
10:55 PM Tom_L: resonators
10:55 PM Tom_L: all in one
10:55 PM rue_mohr: yea
10:55 PM rue_mohr: with caps, yea
10:56 PM rue_mohr: I wonder what it would cost to get 180 pro-mini boards done
10:56 PM rue_mohr: did you get the boardhouse to make your a paste screen?
10:58 PM Tom_L: http://electronicsam.com/images/greenmachine/20190222_155408.jpg
10:58 PM Tom_L: woops
10:58 PM Tom_L: friggin paste buffer
10:58 PM Tom_L: https://ohararp.com/stencils/
10:58 PM Tom_L: i got spares of those too
10:58 PM rue_mohr: yea, they did your baords too?
10:58 PM Tom_L: i think
10:58 PM Tom_L: no
10:59 PM Tom_L: mitch did but he quit doing it
10:59 PM Tom_L: that or goldphoenix
10:59 PM rue_mohr: ah, I'v been told a lot of the new baord houses give you a mask too
11:00 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/boards/new_batch/USB_chips.jpg
11:00 PM Tom_L: finally found the pic
11:00 PM Tom_L: probably ~half a tray left
11:02 PM rue_mohr: hmm
11:02 PM rue_mohr: I want to, I dont know how much effort it would take
11:02 PM rue_mohr: a pro mini is like $4 now
11:03 PM Tom_L: it was a fun ride but it's over now
11:03 PM rue_mohr: everyone says there are places you can get super cheap pcbs made, but I havn't found it yet
11:03 PM rue_mohr: did it taper off or did you lose interest?
11:03 PM Tom_L: quality is probably shit too
11:03 PM Tom_L: some of both
11:03 PM rue_mohr: huh
11:04 PM rue_mohr: I wonder if I could silkscreen mask pcbs for it
11:04 PM Tom_L: studio kinda made it impossible to support it
11:04 PM rue_mohr: that would be worth it
11:04 PM rue_mohr: dunno, never used stupio
11:04 PM rue_mohr: ...
11:04 PM Tom_L: i probably still have a stack of programmer & U2 test boards left
11:05 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/boards/atmega32u2_breakout/ATMEGA32U2_2.jpg
11:05 PM rue_mohr: for the sake of using them, would you be into sending me a few and I'll see if I can make some baords?
11:05 PM rue_mohr: oh!
11:05 PM rue_mohr: thats right
11:05 PM rue_mohr: I forgot about that!\
11:06 PM Tom_L: you ahve the U4 too
11:06 PM rue_mohr: yes!
11:06 PM rue_mohr: thats my programmer!
11:06 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/boards/atmega32u4/atmega32u4_2.jpg
11:06 PM rue_mohr: or did I use the u2...
11:06 PM rue_mohr: I think I used the u2
11:06 PM rue_mohr: well
11:06 PM rue_mohr: gee, you already did it all
11:07 PM rue_mohr: and your u2 breakout baords are already producable
11:08 PM rue_mohr: the two times I tried to submit a board design, they said my files wouldn't work, and I couldn't do anything that made them accept them
11:08 PM Tom_L: probably have a dozen of those made up
11:08 PM rue_mohr: those are the thing
11:09 PM rue_mohr: did you cook in the siwtch or hand-bomb it after?
11:09 PM Tom_L: after
11:09 PM Tom_L: and any connectors except the USB
11:09 PM rue_mohr: yea
11:09 PM rue_mohr: hmm
11:09 PM rue_mohr: if there is anything long term I'm after, that breakout baord fits it
11:10 PM Tom_L: one sec
11:10 PM rue_mohr: for simple control stuff eh?
11:11 PM rue_mohr: like the cnc pendant
11:11 PM rue_mohr: and the wall clock
11:11 PM rue_mohr: some stuff I dont need anything else on pcb,
11:12 PM rue_mohr: something like a pro-mini is nice cause you just take what you want right in
11:16 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/U2/Boards1.jpg
11:16 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/U2/Boards_U2.jpg
11:16 PM Tom_L: i still have a couple
11:16 PM rue_mohr: nice
11:17 PM rue_mohr: oof
11:17 PM rue_mohr: ...
11:17 PM rue_mohr: well
11:17 PM Tom_L: those in the left of the box are U2 breakout
11:17 PM rue_mohr: wow
11:17 PM Tom_L: some of the breadboard adapters etc
11:17 PM rue_mohr: you ahve 90 u2 breakouts!!!?
11:18 PM Tom_L: maybe
11:18 PM rue_mohr: ooof
11:19 PM Tom_L: probably a dozen or more ready to go
11:20 PM rue_mohr: well I do want them
11:20 PM rue_mohr: you got that
11:21 PM rue_mohr: thats maybe more than a lifetime supply...
11:22 PM Tom_L: ok bedtime, i'm out the door at 6am
11:22 PM rue_mohr: I cant give ya what their worth, thats what sucks
11:22 PM Tom_L: i'll do some diggin when i get time
11:22 PM Tom_L: may have a part list & layout
11:24 PM Tom_L: i think those may have had the crystal on em
11:24 PM Tom_L: and i should have put a 8mhz instead of 16 on em but i can't remember why
11:25 PM Tom_L: the xtal may be obsolete now, who knows
11:26 PM Tom_L: do you have one of the U2 boards?
11:26 PM Tom_L: i can't remember
11:26 PM rue_mohr: iirc you sent me a u2 and a u4
11:26 PM Tom_L: i thought you did
11:26 PM rue_mohr: I used at the dip atmega32 boards you did on the hexapod :)
11:26 PM Tom_L: oh the 40 pin
11:27 PM Tom_L: i think it was anyway
11:27 PM Tom_L: been too long now
11:27 PM rue_mohr: yea
11:27 PM rue_mohr: I had a version I wask making for me
11:28 PM rue_mohr: I etched a board a few months back,
11:28 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/boards/USB_Breakout/USB_Breakout_index.php
11:28 PM rue_mohr: the date on the bottle was like 2 years ago
11:29 PM Tom_L: hell those do have the resonator!
11:29 PM rue_mohr: thats the tiny one iirc you regretted going with
11:29 PM Tom_L: no
11:29 PM Tom_L: they work good
11:29 PM Tom_L: the xtal took too much realestate
11:30 PM rue_mohr: I think you had fun installing them tho
11:31 PM Tom_L: yeah those boards are all for the little resonator
11:31 PM Tom_L: 3 pin
11:32 PM Tom_L: i'm out.
11:39 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/projects/freqGen/slide.htm
11:39 PM rue_mohr: there is the freq gen project
11:39 PM rue_mohr: plus a few oops`
