07:47 PM furrywolf: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Miller-XMT-350-VS-DC-Inverter-Multipurpose-Welder-w-Autoline-please-read-1/163463589738 sounds like it needs power supply work... very tempting...
09:45 PM * prunella stands awkwardly in the door way
09:55 PM rue_mohr: prunella, hi
09:55 PM rue_mohr: come in, have a seat
09:56 PM rue_mohr: just cause we have no furniture doesn't mean the floor is completely spoken for
10:10 PM prunella: Very nice
10:11 PM prunella: Thanks
10:12 PM rue_mohr: so what do you do?
10:12 PM rue_mohr: (not trick wise, intellectually)
10:15 PM RonoldoMoon: Yeah prunella , WHAT DO YOU DOOOOOO?
10:15 PM prunella: Gardening's my game
10:16 PM rue_mohr: :) ok
10:17 PM prunella: pruning is four dimensional sculpture. Am I intellectual enough?
10:17 PM rue_mohr: :)
10:17 PM RonoldoMoon: cuz it takes time?
10:17 PM prunella: bingo
10:17 PM RonoldoMoon: :P
10:22 PM RonoldoMoon: prunella, how do i spell harrasment
10:22 PM RonoldoMoon: ?
10:23 PM rue_mohr: harassment
10:23 PM RonoldoMoon: thnks
11:04 PM rue_mohr: https://twitter.com/ico_TC
11:04 PM rue_mohr: this is making me depressed
11:05 PM rue_mohr: I want to play with fpga
11:30 PM rue_shop3: zhanx, your not into that gearbox are ya
11:33 PM furrywolf: yay, wiring done.
11:33 PM rue_shop3: does it work?
11:34 PM furrywolf: yep
11:34 PM rue_shop3: I think I can only be focused by passion
11:34 PM rue_shop3: *damnit*
11:34 PM furrywolf: neccessity works too.
11:35 PM rue_shop3: the "I'm dieing" isn't cutting it
11:36 PM furrywolf: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Miller-XMT-350-VS-DC-Inverter-Multipurpose-Welder-w-Autoline-please-read-1/163463589738 do I need that? I've been looking for a miller XMT, and it's dirt cheap at that price... but the repairs could range from trivial to not worth it.
11:36 PM rue_shop3: there is a thread of passion stirring around in me, and I just cant get a damn handle on it
11:36 PM rue_shop3: yep
11:36 PM rue_shop3: so, if you got that working, it would go in storage?
11:36 PM rue_shop3: :/
11:36 PM furrywolf: bah
11:36 PM rue_shop3: dont get me wrong, its exciting and all
11:37 PM rue_shop3: I really want you to land that winfall and build a shop
11:37 PM rue_shop3: windfall
11:37 PM furrywolf: if I knew it would be an easy repair, I'd definitely try getting it... but "help 1" and no power-up apparantly can mean anything from a bad diode or open high-power resistor to every circuit board in the machine being a blackened crisp.
11:38 PM rue_shop3: nono, then it couldn't say help 1
11:38 PM furrywolf: it no longer says help1. now it says nothing.
11:38 PM furrywolf: so... two things have failed.
11:38 PM rue_shop3: :/
11:39 PM rue_shop3: what price do you see
11:39 PM furrywolf: $267
11:39 PM rue_shop3: ok same
11:39 PM rue_shop3: less "may not ship to canada"
11:41 PM rue_shop3: I wish I didn't have this almost nonstop pounding headache
11:41 PM furrywolf: is this a common thing?
11:41 PM rue_shop3: someone lost my #58 drillbit
11:41 PM rue_shop3: how the f*** mcuh will THAT cost me
11:41 PM furrywolf: $2
11:42 PM rue_shop3: hhahaha
11:42 PM rue_shop3: I cant just go buy one
11:42 PM furrywolf: do you normally get headaches, or is this a new thing?
11:42 PM rue_shop3: its been the leading cuase of my non-productivity for about 6 mos now
11:42 PM rue_shop3: ASA helps, but I'm woried about a ducttape solution
11:43 PM furrywolf: ah. well, in a way that's good. it means you're not having a stroke or something.
11:43 PM furrywolf: go see a doctor?
11:43 PM rue_shop3: I hvae to get to the lab for a thyroid test
11:46 PM rue_shop3: I wanted to make a basic induction heater tonight :/
11:47 PM furrywolf: I wanted to get rid of the leaking batteries and install my new shiny panel. it needs some tidying-up, but it's pretty much done.
11:47 PM furrywolf: and the batteries are now sitting outside
11:49 PM rue_shop3: what happens if you bring a magnet near molten metal in an induction furnace?
11:51 PM furrywolf: magnetohydrodynamics happens
11:51 PM furrywolf: the metal should move according to the current direction and one of those hand-pointy rules I never remember.
11:51 PM rue_shop3: so, I can pour the metal into a mold without moving the pot
11:51 PM furrywolf: although, being ac, it might immediately move back...
11:51 PM rue_shop3: straight up if I want
11:52 PM rue_shop3: so your saying play with the phase of two induction coils
11:52 PM furrywolf: I don't know if you can induce a non-AC field
11:53 PM rue_shop3: to keep the force the same, change the polarity of both fields at once
11:53 PM furrywolf: you might need to use an electromagnet off the induction drive to always match its phase, possibly with a phase shift.
11:53 PM furrywolf: I really don't know much about magnetohydrodynamics, though. you need to do some research.
11:54 PM furrywolf: nor do I know what the fields in an induction heater look like
11:54 PM furrywolf: you may end up just reacting against the induction coil, not the metal
11:54 PM rue_shop3: so, your saying camera and neural network control
11:55 PM furrywolf: no, I'm saying it may not work at all. :P
11:55 PM rue_shop3: so, your saying I can make a robot out of molten metal, that can reshape itself, but it'll need organic skin to travel in time
11:55 PM rue_shop3: :D
11:56 PM furrywolf: you'll need to be inducing enough current in the metal, in a consistent pattern, that it generates a magnetic field that you can push against with another, probably synchonized field, and not have it be entirely swamped by the induction coil's field... I lack the understanding of these things needed to determine if it works that way or not.
11:57 PM furrywolf: you'll need to read some papers about magnetohydrodynamics (at least I remembered the name!) and current induced by induction heating...
