04:46 PM furrywolf: yay, free stuff!
04:50 PM furrywolf: just got a millermatic 135. cheap, little, 110V wire feed welder.
04:50 PM furrywolf: has feed issues... probably needs drive rollers or the motor cleaned and greased. he said it works fine if you pull some wire out the side and let it pull that in, but it can't feed smoothly if it's having to also unroll the reel.
04:57 PM furrywolf: based on a brief visual inspection, I'm betting on needing a drive roller.
04:57 PM furrywolf: and/or putting in one that actually matches the wire in it. lol
06:30 PM Tom_L: make sure the cable is seated in the welder good
06:30 PM Tom_L: the tube
06:30 PM Tom_L: they are reversable
06:30 PM Tom_L: the rollers are
06:31 PM furrywolf: the groove in the roller looks noticably larger than the wire that's in it
06:31 PM furrywolf: I'll look closer later.
06:31 PM Tom_L: i cranked the roller tensioner down on mine and it works fine now
06:31 PM Tom_L: using a large roll
06:31 PM Tom_L: just flip the roller around
06:31 PM Tom_L: it should be reversable
06:32 PM furrywolf: the other side looked noticably smaller than the wire he has in it. :)
06:32 PM Tom_L: i've got the 175 which is 220v
06:32 PM furrywolf: I need to actually tae it apart and look at it.
06:32 PM furrywolf: I just glanced at it.
06:32 PM Tom_L: sometimes i have to take the tip off mine to get the wire fed out then put the tip over the wire and screw it on
06:33 PM Tom_L: iirc my big reel is .030"
06:34 PM Tom_L: i know i was having trouble with one not wanting to feed right
06:34 PM Tom_L: but it was a small reel
06:34 PM Tom_L: and i think it may have been .025" wire
06:35 PM furrywolf: I'll probably set it up for .023. from my experience, tiny shitty welders run it best.
06:35 PM furrywolf: he was running flux core
06:35 PM Tom_L: once i realized the feed tube wasn't seated right in the machine and leaking gas it's worked fine since
06:35 PM Tom_L: probably
06:35 PM Tom_L: flux core is revese polarity remember...
06:36 PM Tom_L: so if you go back to solid you may need to reverse that
06:36 PM furrywolf: yes, I know this.
06:37 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Welding/Miller.jpg
06:37 PM furrywolf: if I spot a mm175 for the same price, I will definitely get it too. :P
06:38 PM furrywolf: I had a little 110V welder, but I lent it to someone... now I'll have one again.
06:38 PM Tom_L: i wanted it because it was 220v
06:39 PM Tom_L: can do a little more with it
06:39 PM furrywolf: yes, I know... I would like a bigger one too. But this one was FREE.
06:39 PM Tom_L: i hear ya
06:39 PM furrywolf: anyway, for bigger stuff, I have a Bobcat 225NT and a suitcase feeder.
06:40 PM furrywolf: 225A 100% duty cycle...
06:40 PM Tom_L: nice
06:40 PM furrywolf: engine has no compression, but it starts eventually. heh.
06:40 PM furrywolf: rebuilding it is one of my many to-do-someday projects.
06:41 PM Tom_L: i had an old old lincoln gas welder once
06:41 PM Tom_L: got tired of pullin the rope to get it started
06:41 PM Tom_L: stick welder
06:42 PM Tom_L: sold it and eventually got the miller
06:42 PM furrywolf: mine's electric start, which is good... because it takes two batteries and a charger to get it running...
06:42 PM Tom_L: for what little i weld it's great
06:43 PM furrywolf: I'm pretty sure the exhaust valves are burnt... if you put your paw on the exhaust, it pushes it off, then sucks back just as hard...
06:51 PM furrywolf: bbl, shelving
08:42 PM rue_mohr: pop the head off and see
08:47 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rq6z1hShFcE
08:48 PM Tom_L: unrelated to anything but interesting
08:51 PM rue_mohr: geez, it doesn't get the enxt one ready right away you have to wait for it to spit out
08:51 PM rue_mohr: it seems to me that motors prolly got made faster with less cost overhead when they were made by hand
08:52 PM Tom_L: maybe less consistent
08:53 PM Tom_L: a few steps still require human intervention
08:53 PM rue_mohr: this looks like the work of too many university kids
08:54 PM Tom_L: maybe but i was impressed it all worked together
08:54 PM Tom_L: wonder how long it took to plan all the steps and decide how to do them
08:55 PM rue_mohr: indeed
08:56 PM rue_mohr: granted those motors are prolyl heavier than they look
09:00 PM rue_mohr: those must be hell to service,
09:01 PM rue_mohr: from the printed gasket to the retainer free bearings
09:08 PM Tom_L: not meant to be cheap.. it's an Audi
10:51 PM zhanx_: Evening
10:53 PM rue_mohr: hey
10:53 PM rue_mohr: 3d scanner not quite done yet
10:53 PM rue_mohr: tho the hardware is 99.5%
10:54 PM zhanx_: wait what
10:54 PM zhanx_: are you making my 3d scanner?
10:54 PM rue_mohr: I need to link the drivers to the pi with a wire
10:54 PM rue_mohr: seing as I started it in 2000
10:55 PM rue_mohr: thought I should be able to beat ya to the punch
10:55 PM zhanx_: fine then i will make the hardware better
10:56 PM zhanx_: i am printing stuff for the wife
10:56 PM zhanx_: 20 boxes ugh
10:56 PM rue_mohr: yea
10:56 PM zhanx_: then I can print the top to the slew drive
10:57 PM zhanx_: i am making another printer
10:57 PM zhanx_: one for me and one for her
10:57 PM zhanx_: and yes she ok'd it
10:58 PM rue_mohr: tell me how costs go now that there isn't a china
10:59 PM zhanx_: cheap as I only need 2 nema's and some rod
10:59 PM zhanx_: remember i bought the spares
10:59 PM rue_mohr: nozzel and avr?
10:59 PM zhanx_: have 3 nozzles
10:59 PM zhanx_: and 8 printr boards
11:00 PM zhanx_: so 20 bucks for rods and she will find printers etc
11:01 PM zhanx_: her list is over 100 items now
11:02 PM zhanx_: after these hex boxes are done, i am print parts for a second one
11:04 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/projects/3dscanner/p1100862.jpg
11:04 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/projects/3dscanner/p1100872.jpg
11:04 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/projects/3dscanner/p1100873.jpg
11:05 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/projects/3dscanner/p1100874.jpg
11:06 PM zhanx_: mine will be better
11:06 PM rue_mohr: mhm
11:09 PM rue_mohr: in 862, those shims I made, got it working better than ever before
11:09 PM rue_mohr: yay 3 printers!
11:09 PM zhanx_: yep
11:10 PM zhanx_: home fab for the win
11:10 PM rue_mohr: yeaaaa, I gotta work on my 12' mecha thanks...
11:11 PM zhanx_: oh i got a line on metal scraps for casting today
11:11 PM zhanx_: free
11:11 PM zhanx_: so i am gonna bite the bullet and start the design of it
11:12 PM rue_mohr: aluminum to melt down?
11:12 PM zhanx_: yep
11:12 PM rue_mohr: hot water tank bottom, with diy refractory and a tiger torch
11:13 PM rue_mohr: the diy is perlite, concrete, and glass sand
11:13 PM zhanx_: gonna print in pla to cast it
11:13 PM rue_mohr: and for its price, it lasts a LONG time
11:13 PM rue_mohr: pla gets pretty soupie about 100c for clean-out
11:14 PM rue_mohr: iirc
11:14 PM rue_mohr: put some in toaster oven
11:14 PM rue_mohr: turned some midprints into a puddle
11:14 PM zhanx_: pla can be casted in alumin
11:14 PM rue_mohr: misprints
11:15 PM rue_mohr: burn out style!? no way
11:15 PM zhanx_: well i am gonna test it this summer for sure
11:16 PM rue_mohr: well I need to know how it goes, I have an engine pan here that needs to be cast
11:18 PM zhanx_: k after getting all the robotics parts and then a line on aluminum , I have to make it
11:19 PM rue_mohr: :) you should see the crazy pile of aluminum bars I'v amased
11:20 PM zhanx_: so if pla casting works your on it
11:25 PM rue_mohr: I was playing with the idea of trying to empty pla out of a mold, but I decided that I'd make a wax printer instead
11:26 PM rue_mohr: thats why the wax/silicone/chocolate/clay/sugar printer
11:26 PM rue_mohr: dont know how the sugar will fit in on that one, its a different animal
11:27 PM rue_mohr: I have some hand 3d printed chocolate in the fridge
11:27 PM rue_mohr: "about 28c"
11:29 PM zhanx_: https://www.machinablewax.com/product.php?product=52
11:29 PM rue_mohr: I wonder where my gumption went, synthetic gumption consumes a lot of energy
11:30 PM rue_mohr: yes, or I could just use cheap, available parrifin
11:30 PM rue_mohr: wait
11:30 PM rue_mohr: wtc
11:30 PM rue_mohr: wt
11:30 PM rue_mohr: f?
11:31 PM rue_mohr: wtf
11:32 PM rue_mohr: but 140c is almost the temp of pla anyhow
11:36 PM zhanx_: ok logged for feb, wax filament maker
11:37 PM zhanx_: extruder with a few fans and spools
11:37 PM rue_mohr: its a PE+pariffin mix
11:38 PM rue_mohr: PE melting point is 120 to 180c ldpe is 105-115c
11:38 PM * rue_mohr peers at the milk jugs on the kitchen floor
11:38 PM zhanx_: my plate is so full :(
11:38 PM rue_mohr: haha
11:39 PM rue_mohr: you will need to live to 500 to get everything done ;)
11:39 PM zhanx_: yep just like you
11:39 PM rue_mohr: then you can start playing
11:40 PM rue_mohr: hard to not become a hermit when you exist with the fact that you will outlive anyone you get to know
11:41 PM rue_mohr: it implies that I can mix 20% pariffin into hdpe
11:41 PM rue_mohr: maybe thats worth a test
11:46 PM zhanx_: ok gonna make it
11:47 PM zhanx_: my slew drive can power it
11:49 PM rue_shop1: hmm this might come out smelling a bit like catfood
