07:44 PM zhanx: Evening
07:47 PM rue_mohr: hey
07:47 PM zhanx: today was 100% everything just worked, it was great
07:47 PM rue_mohr: :) nice
07:47 PM zhanx: i cutover 31 circuits (62 cables) and all first time goes
07:50 PM rue_mohr: I average about 3 uncaught oops' / year
07:50 PM rue_mohr: (found with tester)
07:52 PM zhanx: for you or found?
07:53 PM rue_mohr: most corrections I notice before its tested
07:54 PM zhanx: 3 is great then
07:55 PM zhanx: I am excited I got a job tomorrow at the NY power authority
07:56 PM zhanx: my background check came back today so they want me out tomorrow
07:57 PM zhanx: and yes i had to pay for the background check which sucks
08:01 PM rue_mohr: you out of the hole on the materials?
08:02 PM zhanx: almost
08:02 PM zhanx: I had to go back in it today
08:04 PM Tom_L: you'd think they would at least front that
08:05 PM Tom_L: i've done volunteer work that required it and they paid for it
08:05 PM zhanx: they fronted the pay i will say that
08:05 PM furrywolf: most places I've worked for pay for the background check.
08:05 PM Tom_L: exactly
08:05 PM Tom_L: and the pee test
08:05 PM zhanx: furrywolf, I applied to work there as a contractor
08:05 PM rue_mohr: where is my tea?
08:05 PM * furrywolf is even TSA certified as not a terrorist
08:05 PM Tom_L: i drank it
08:05 PM zhanx: so the costs are mine
08:06 PM * rue_mohr read "I applied to work there as a capacitor"
08:07 PM furrywolf: I'm allowed to have unescorted access to cargo.
08:10 PM zhanx: TWIC card?
08:11 PM furrywolf: that's for boats... I got the airport version.
08:12 PM zhanx: weird they let me in airports with mine.
08:12 PM zhanx: I got it for boats at first
08:14 PM furrywolf: I used to work for a courier company that put its cargo directly on planes... I also had to have $4M in insurance to be allowed to drive up to the planes. heh.
08:14 PM zhanx: nice
08:15 PM Tom_L: 17 yr old driver never even braked about 2/3 of the car under the back of a school bus. when they pried what was left of her out of the car, her cell phone was still in her hand
08:15 PM rue_mohr: *twink* oops, did anyone need that antenna??? anyone??? no? ok....
08:15 PM Tom_L: top half of the car was basicall gone
08:15 PM Tom_L: y
08:15 PM zhanx: Tom_L, I had one like that in the army
08:16 PM zhanx: girl hit an lmtv at 95, lmtv was stoped
08:16 PM Tom_L: i saw one like that when i was younger
08:16 PM zhanx: stopped
08:16 PM Tom_L: yeah the bus was stopped
08:16 PM zhanx: It was a mess
08:16 PM Tom_L: no tire marks at all
08:16 PM rue_mohr: it was SO funny the day the cell system went down in town, everyone wandering the street waving their phones around trying to find signal
08:16 PM furrywolf: I saw a girl in a sedan pull out directly in front of a semi on the freeway... t-boned perfectly in the middle of the car.
08:17 PM furrywolf: took impressively long to come to a stop, even pushing the car sideways with the wheels smoking. a good reminder that semis do not stop on a dime.
08:17 PM zhanx: i put 8 guys in the hospital to monitor and met the family etc
08:18 PM zhanx: Tom_L, I am taking a shop vac to Ricoh printer tomorrow
08:19 PM zhanx: black toner is reading empty all the time
08:19 PM furrywolf: by far the best part of the process was one of the tests... it was a multiple-choice test, with questions similar to "Someone you do not know hands you a package with greasy stains and exposed wiring, and asks you to load it on the plane. Do you a) load it on the plane, b) tell your friends, c) take photos, or d) call 911?"
08:19 PM zhanx: furrywolf, I thankfully due to my background don't have to take them stupid things
08:20 PM Tom_L: tell your friends of course
08:20 PM rue_mohr: zhanx, is that a magnetic or opto signal?
08:20 PM zhanx: opto
08:21 PM zhanx: but its not the opto that is the issue
08:21 PM rue_mohr: DUDE! SOMEONE JUST GAVE ME A FREE BOMB!!!
08:21 PM furrywolf: I really wish I'd made a copy of that test.
08:22 PM zhanx: rue in canda you should say sorry I have your bomb and be extra polite about it
08:22 PM rue_mohr: hah
08:23 PM rue_mohr: you know the sad thing is, if it was a bomb he wouldn't likley be the guy who made it, so you couldn't even compliment him on his handywork
08:23 PM rue_mohr: "white gloves man, this things a mess!"
08:23 PM zhanx: this is very true, not like i would know
08:24 PM rue_mohr: "your wires are too long, here, let me fix this up for you"
08:24 PM rue_mohr: did I tell you about my highschool bomb?
08:24 PM zhanx: rue_mohr, you remember me bitching a few years back when I made training IED's and they were too real
08:24 PM rue_mohr: I dont recall that
08:24 PM rue_mohr: hah
08:24 PM zhanx: I got arrested etc
08:25 PM rue_mohr: oops
08:25 PM zhanx: sad part is i painted them training blue. does that ring a bell?
08:25 PM rue_mohr: was anyone else smart enough to confirm they were fakes for training?
08:25 PM rue_mohr: no, sorry
08:25 PM zhanx: no, they though the box of crap tossed in it was real etc
08:26 PM rue_mohr: so, looong before bomb threats in schools and 911
08:26 PM zhanx: either way best training day for my troopers
08:26 PM rue_mohr: me and the guys were talking about costumes for a haloween party
08:26 PM rue_mohr: so, my buddy says, it would be nice to go as a bomber, cause he could wear normal clothing
08:27 PM rue_mohr: and of course, I step up and offer to make a fake bomb!
08:27 PM zhanx: of course
08:29 PM rue_mohr: so, breadboard, + 9V battery + 555 + 7490 + 7447 + 7 segemnt + beeper and i have an (up, oh well) counter that beeps as it counts, a block of modeling clay from the art teacher with some curly wires, little bit of a cardboard box around the electronics and BAM, er that is BOMB!
08:29 PM rue_mohr: so...
08:29 PM rue_mohr: we gather in the library to take a look
08:29 PM rue_mohr: (the battery didn't last long, whatever)
08:29 PM furrywolf: the bomb squad here is always responding to "suspicious" items... and their response is always to blow it up with their bomb bot. even when it's something like, a few months ago, an unattended back pack left by the police station, which is next to a public park.
08:29 PM rue_mohr: so, the librarian sees it
08:29 PM rue_mohr: AND FREAKS OUT
08:30 PM furrywolf: from what I know, they've only actually destroyed one real bomb... and it was one that was turned into them.
08:30 PM rue_mohr: after all the dust and feathers had settled, we decided it was too real and not to do that.
08:30 PM furrywolf: but, got to justify that budget somehow!
08:30 PM furrywolf: in to
08:31 PM rue_mohr: it was a halarious moment tho
08:31 PM rue_mohr: he freaked.
08:31 PM rue_mohr: you could never do that these days
08:31 PM zhanx: no you can't
08:31 PM furrywolf: sure you could.
08:31 PM rue_mohr: it looked pretty good, I wish I'd had a picture
08:32 PM rue_mohr: I was sad that it counted up, but there really wasn't anything I could do with the parts and the time I had
08:32 PM furrywolf: in fact, it's very easy to make a fake bomb. It doesn't even need to count. For example, some LEDs arranged in the shape of a popular cartoon character is obviously a bomb.
08:32 PM rue_mohr: and it didn't last long on the 9V
08:34 PM rue_mohr: ok I need to do a usefull thing today
08:34 PM rue_mohr: whats it gonna be
08:34 PM Tom_L: let the cat out
08:34 PM zhanx: its raining Tom_L
08:34 PM rue_mohr: I hav a 3d model of the opto interrupter sitting infront of me, waiting to have the optic paths worked out
08:34 PM furrywolf: or whatever police department blew up the traffic counter their own roads department had placed... you know, the box with the hoses across the road...
08:34 PM Tom_L: make the mount for the optos for the encoder
08:34 PM rue_mohr: there is a list of about a million things in the shop that need doing
08:35 PM Tom_L: it will be pouring encoder wheels soon
08:35 PM rue_mohr: including the heating system for this winter for the house
08:35 PM Tom_L: yeah heat might be something you want around this winter
08:35 PM rue_mohr: I need to write esp8266 code for the new tea machine
08:36 PM rue_mohr: not even on my list is strippig down some of the 200'^2 of junk on the front deck
08:36 PM rue_mohr: (seeing as I'm not doing the kids robotics)
08:36 PM Tom_L: invite the neighbors over to help pick what to keep
08:36 PM Tom_L: :)
08:37 PM rue_mohr: I want to make a stereo electrostatic pickup for the headphone amp I have sitting infornt of me
08:37 PM rue_mohr: hah
08:37 PM Tom_L: finally had to put a battery in my cell phone
08:37 PM rue_mohr: I suppose I should see if the roof thing is leaking
08:38 PM Tom_L: it was split open front and back
08:38 PM rue_mohr: oof
08:38 PM rue_mohr: iphone?
08:38 PM Tom_L: hell no
08:38 PM Tom_L: S6?
08:39 PM Tom_L: cheaper than getting another one
08:39 PM rue_mohr: I need to work on my robotic body
08:39 PM rue_mohr: not getting younger
08:39 PM rue_mohr: and software to run my brain
08:40 PM Tom_L: thinking of another interesting but simple project..
08:40 PM rue_mohr: ?
08:41 PM rue_mohr: the projects that push a limit of some kind are nice
08:41 PM Tom_L: not coming up with much yet
08:41 PM rue_mohr: liek really tiny slots were
08:41 PM rue_mohr: clock gears?, maybe not
08:41 PM rue_mohr: :) aluminum snowflakes
08:41 PM Tom_L: i ended up breaking another cutter so i gave up on the last 2 of that batch
08:42 PM rue_mohr: :S ouch
08:42 PM Tom_L: the ones i had left were too long but that's all i could get
08:42 PM rue_mohr: feedrate too high maybe?
08:42 PM Tom_L: no it should have taken it fine
08:42 PM Tom_L: but obviously it was
08:42 PM rue_mohr: were you running coolant?
08:42 PM Tom_L: 4k rpm 4 ipm
08:42 PM Tom_L: yes
08:42 PM rue_mohr: huh
08:42 PM Tom_L: always
08:42 PM rue_mohr: the formulas seem to fail small bits
08:43 PM Tom_L: the .125 runs great at 6.5
08:43 PM rue_mohr: I was wrestling with that
08:43 PM Tom_L: i even used a broken cutter on that for all those
08:44 PM Tom_L: snapped where the grub screw holds it
08:44 PM Tom_L: if i had collets that would never happen
08:44 PM rue_mohr: can you code for a 4th axis?
08:44 PM Tom_L: not with my cam no
08:44 PM rue_mohr: mm
08:44 PM Tom_L: it will index but not rotary
08:44 PM Tom_L: but i don't have a 4th axis post for it
08:45 PM rue_mohr: well, that was gonna be my suggestion
08:45 PM Tom_L: i could probably make one
08:45 PM rue_mohr: but if you cant code for it
08:45 PM Tom_L: not easily
08:45 PM rue_mohr: nah, too steep
08:45 PM rue_mohr: find another way up the mountian
08:46 PM rue_mohr: snowflakes, I tellz ya
08:46 PM rue_mohr: I gave ya the dxf, didn't I?
08:46 PM Tom_L: i don't remember
08:46 PM Tom_L: i don't have it
08:46 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/objects/snowflake3.dxf
08:46 PM Tom_L: it needs to be useful for me to do it
08:47 PM rue_mohr: see if you can open it
08:47 PM rue_mohr: christmas presents!
08:47 PM rue_mohr: good way to have fun and deal with people
08:47 PM rue_mohr: battery chargers, thats what i'll do
08:50 PM Tom_L: sw seemed to read it ok
08:50 PM rue_shop3: is that the kinda skelatonized one?
08:50 PM rue_shop3: I was cutting them out of old CD's
08:50 PM rue_shop3: TRICKEY
08:50 PM rue_shop3: didn't expect it to be
08:51 PM rue_shop3: between the thermal and structural challanges, wow
08:53 PM rue_shop3: :) how do you hold down a CD when milling it? :)
08:53 PM Tom_L: yeah i bet
08:53 PM Tom_L: double back tape
08:54 PM Tom_L: or a suction plate
08:55 PM zhanx: ugh
08:55 PM zhanx: Tom_L, gas card first or spending card?
08:56 PM rue_shop3: Tom_L, I should get you into an electronics project, I should.
08:56 PM Tom_L: heh i dunno
08:56 PM Tom_L: no, it's all put away
08:56 PM zhanx: rue?
08:56 PM Tom_L: i do need to take the P166 card out and solder the headers
08:57 PM Tom_L: i've been stalling on that
08:57 PM rue_shop3: yes?
08:57 PM zhanx: gas card first or spending card?
08:57 PM rue_shop3: credit cards?
08:57 PM zhanx: yes
08:58 PM rue_shop3: why do they have to be different?
08:58 PM zhanx: I don't know Tom_L said get a gas card with rewards, and i thought they were different
09:00 PM zhanx: oh i need to do that for halloween,
09:00 PM zhanx: sensor that turns the door handle before you hands get to it
09:01 PM rue_shop3: hah
09:02 PM zhanx: rue_shop3, since we are rural a bunch of us do a haunted garage every year, I might add that to the door
09:03 PM Tom_L: honestly zhanx, i've never used either
09:03 PM Tom_L: but i've not needed to
09:03 PM * furrywolf is lucky to live in a rural area, and thus has no problems with trickortreaters.
09:03 PM zhanx: its like getting business advice from a billionaire
09:03 PM Tom_L: i do have a rewards gas card i use just for the rewards
09:03 PM Tom_L: no, i'm not Koch
09:04 PM furrywolf: I don't think I've ever seen one here.
09:04 PM furrywolf: (a trick-or-treater)
09:04 PM zhanx: no your tom from myspace
09:04 PM zhanx: furrywolf, its 5 miles to town for me and no one ever comes here
09:05 PM Tom_L: i know you need supplies but don't let that be the downfall of your business
09:05 PM Tom_L: because it's easy to let it happen
09:05 PM zhanx: Yep I am trying to hold out to friday for my VA pay
09:05 PM zhanx: then after that I get net 30 for a bunch of jobs
09:05 PM Tom_L: cards are just too easy to use
09:06 PM Tom_L: i have a business check card for convenience
09:07 PM Tom_L: and have a bank that doesn't have a maintenance charge
09:08 PM Tom_L: it's ~5 hrs til Friday btw
09:08 PM zhanx: cool the email i wanted came in
09:09 PM zhanx: i meant next Firday
09:09 PM Tom_L: oh
09:09 PM zhanx: due to the rain, the cabling will be pushed to thursday next week
09:10 PM zhanx: I have enough to do the underground stuff already but not the rest
09:11 PM Tom_L: almost have enough for another free tank now
09:11 PM rue_shop3: water?
09:11 PM Tom_L: generally give it to one of the kids
09:11 PM Tom_L: no gas
09:12 PM rue_shop3: oh
09:12 PM Tom_L: reward points
09:13 PM zhanx: Tom_L, my issue was/is, due to kids I slowed down on work. Now that they are in school I picked up a ton and the up front costs are killing me
09:13 PM rue_shop3: ok, one charger set up
09:13 PM rue_shop3: 5 more to go
09:13 PM rue_shop3: hmm
09:13 PM Tom_L: i know how it goes
09:13 PM Tom_L: summer is slow for us
09:13 PM rue_shop3: I should make a 12V one
09:13 PM Tom_L: typically anyway
09:14 PM Tom_L: that was one reason years back i helped my bud with his machine shop
09:14 PM zhanx: Hopefully At&t shipped all the cabling for monday
09:15 PM zhanx: its a new store Marices or something like for women's cloths
09:15 PM Tom_L: did programming, wired up the comms for them ran them etc
09:15 PM Tom_L: morice?
09:15 PM Tom_L: maurice
09:15 PM zhanx: I am doing the whole IT install monday
09:16 PM Tom_L: alone or do you still have a helper?
09:17 PM Tom_L: a monkey makes things go faster as long as the monkey pays for himself
09:17 PM zhanx: electricians either pulled the cables or left me pulls, I have a helper for this, he is 19 and fresh out of highschool
09:17 PM Tom_L: as long as he's the type that's not afraid to get dirty
09:17 PM Tom_L: most kids really don't wanna work now
09:18 PM zhanx: his dad asked me to try him out, he is a friend of a friend and sad he will kick his ass if he is lazy
09:18 PM Tom_L: that could go either way
09:18 PM zhanx: yep
09:18 PM zhanx: last kid i had didn't work out
09:18 PM Tom_L: i got a kid a job at my bud's shop and he worked out good
09:19 PM Tom_L: started out sweeping floors etc
09:19 PM Tom_L: worked until he joined the national guard
09:20 PM zhanx: when i find a good helper I will know
09:20 PM Tom_L: prior was flipping pizza at the mall
09:20 PM Tom_L: i did get quite a bit of free pizza
09:20 PM Tom_L: :)
09:20 PM zhanx: heck i don't care if he know IT stuff I can teach them
09:20 PM Tom_L: better off that way in some regards
09:21 PM zhanx: I say he as in the girl i hired wouldn't climb a ladder
09:21 PM zhanx: that lasted 45 minutes
09:28 PM zhanx: ok did my USAA 2500 limit credit card request and it will be here tuesday
09:28 PM zhanx: that should be more than enough for the times I need extra
09:51 PM furrywolf: wow. I just made a mistake trimming a tree. The trunk I had the ladder against seemed nice and sturdy... until I cut off everything above the ladder. As soon as I got the last branch off, it started bouncing all over. Apparantly the branches and leaves serve as dampers. I should have saved this trunk for last!
09:51 PM furrywolf: now I have to have the ladder bouncing all over when doing the rest of the trimming.
09:53 PM Tom_L: i once stood on a 8-10" branch that looked healty
09:53 PM Tom_L: it was hollow :)
09:55 PM furrywolf: heh
09:55 PM furrywolf: I'm just amazed at how much the top of the tree was making the bottom nice to put a ladder against.
09:55 PM furrywolf: it was nice and solid... now it's bouncing 6+ inches as I move on the ladder.
09:55 PM furrywolf: the branches and leaves were damping the spring of the trun
09:55 PM furrywolf: trunk
09:55 PM Tom_L: i didn't fall but my foot went partway thru it
