#garfield Calendar
12:01 AM furrywolf: I bought a torch cart for $50, and got the two gel-cells thrown in free.
12:04 AM rue_mohr: :)
12:04 AM furrywolf: they're from 2016, was hoping they'd come back to life, but no luck yet.
12:04 AM rue_mohr: like all set up fro a bottle and everything?
12:04 AM rue_mohr: 2 or more wheels?
12:04 AM furrywolf: no bottles, just the cart
12:04 AM furrywolf: two wheels
12:04 AM furrywolf: a design I haven't seen before, the tanks are in-line, not side by side
12:04 AM rue_mohr: ... dosn't that make it harder to wheel?
12:04 AM rue_mohr: I got a dolly and can barely move around the tank I have
12:09 AM rue_mohr: heh, I always end up too late to take pics of stuff
12:11 AM furrywolf: heh, there is fucking _no_ moon/star light tonight.
12:11 AM rue_mohr: :/
12:11 AM rue_mohr: ah well, maybe tommorow
12:12 AM rue_mohr: I need to figure out supper
12:12 AM furrywolf: I used artificial light. :)
12:13 AM furrywolf: It is _dark_... at 12800 ISO and a f/1.4 lens, I needed a 10-second exposure.
12:13 AM rue_mohr: 8-|
12:13 AM furrywolf: aaand that exceeded my handholding abilities. "just a little" motion blur. :)
12:13 AM rue_mohr: there was supposed to be software to remove that
12:14 AM rue_mohr: 2d echo canceler
12:16 AM furrywolf: actualy, I was wrong, the acetylene is mostly in front of the wheels too
12:17 AM rue_mohr: I need a temp controller for the fridge, I keep catching the compressor r
12:17 AM rue_mohr: trying to suck itselfg
12:17 AM rue_mohr: arg! I keep catching the compressor trying to suck itself inside out
12:17 AM furrywolf: http://fw.bushytails.net/tmp/torchcart01.jpg
12:17 AM rue_mohr: the tstat seems to be sticking
12:17 AM rue_mohr: or wow
12:18 AM furrywolf: I have smaller tanks on it than it's meant for... with full-size tanks, the acetylene would stick behind the axle
12:18 AM rue_mohr: the handles attach... interestingly
12:18 AM furrywolf: yeah, I've never seen a similar cart.
12:19 AM rue_mohr: does the front hinge or something?
12:19 AM furrywolf: but, my old cart is a completely rusted and falling apart piece of shit with no rubber left on the wheels, that I will very happily dump in the bin in front of the scrapyard.
12:19 AM rue_mohr: wow typing chalalnges today!
12:19 AM rue_mohr: your jack could use some love too
12:19 AM rue_mohr: what do you weld/cut?
12:20 AM furrywolf: no, no part of it moves in any way, as far as I know. all welded.
12:20 AM furrywolf: I do whatever needs doing. heh.
12:20 AM rue_mohr: the camera side of it has those pipe sections
12:20 AM rue_mohr: I wonder what thats about
12:21 AM furrywolf: I got both the cart and the tanks at different yard sales on the same day... the tanks were $30 at one yard sale, then the cart was $50 at another yard sale, with the batteries... which I'll scrap for about $10, so $70 for the whole thing.
12:21 AM furrywolf: brazing rod holders
12:21 AM rue_mohr: botom one capped?
12:21 AM rue_mohr: wow, deal
12:22 AM furrywolf: the guy I got it from had brazing rod in it... I don't remember if they're capped or just extended down to the foot.
12:22 AM furrywolf: and I'm not going back outside to check. :)
12:22 AM rue_mohr: I got a shielding gas tank that was related to a place that isn't in town anymore
12:22 AM rue_mohr: I dont know if I can get a credit at one of the other places
12:22 AM furrywolf: I checked these tanks before buying them... they're owner tanks.
12:22 AM rue_mohr: nice anyhow.
12:22 AM furrywolf: no company names on the collars of either one.
12:23 AM rue_mohr: do they trade-a-tank or actaully refill them in your area?
12:23 AM rue_mohr: maybe I can fix my issue with some bondo :)
12:23 AM furrywolf: if yours has a company name on the collar... hit it with a flap wheel, repaint it, then distress the paint until it doesn't look like fresh paint. :P
12:23 AM furrywolf: exchange
12:23 AM rue_mohr: yea, ditto here
12:24 AM rue_mohr: :)
12:24 AM rue_mohr: I just need credit for _one_ tank and I'm good
12:24 AM furrywolf: you can request them to be filled, but it takes weeks for some gasses (they ship them out), and you don't get a free upgrade to a nicely painted tank with a current hydro stamp...
12:24 AM rue_mohr: $100/yr lease for $40 of gas that takes me 3 yrs to use!
12:25 AM rue_mohr: havnt' doen any brazing for a while tho
12:25 AM furrywolf: if you actually bought a new tank and maintained it well, then maybe filling instead of exhanging makes some sense... but when you're always working with random yard sale tanks that __always__ have expired hydro stamps... heh.
12:25 AM rue_mohr: :)
12:26 AM furrywolf: I think they now only fill oxygen and CO2 on-site, everything else is shipped out.
12:26 AM rue_mohr: canadian tire up here, the workers aren't trained enough to know expired propane tanks, so its a free-for-all
12:26 AM furrywolf: oh, and pure butane.
12:26 AM rue_mohr: butane!?
12:26 AM furrywolf: of course. pure butane is big business here.
12:26 AM rue_mohr: refill a hell of a lot of lighters
12:26 AM furrywolf: we have entire businesses that only sell butane
12:26 AM rue_mohr: ... what for?
12:27 AM furrywolf: https://www.facebook.com/refinedhydrocarbon/ example (doesn't load here, but it might for you)
12:27 AM furrywolf: hash
12:28 AM rue_mohr: I imagine its the ultimate low-pressure gas, sits about 3? psi till its empty?
12:28 AM rue_mohr: dunt say what people are using it for...
12:28 AM furrywolf: it's used to extract thc from marijuana
12:28 AM rue_mohr: hahahahaha
12:28 AM furrywolf: that being the primary industry around here.
12:29 AM rue_mohr: yea, every wharehouse around here that goes empty for a month becomes a gro-op
12:29 AM furrywolf: https://www.instagram.com/refinedhydrocarbon/?hl=en
12:29 AM furrywolf: I work about a half mile from them
12:29 AM rue_mohr: basically, there aren't many warehouses around that ARENT grow-ops
12:31 AM rue_mohr: the neighbour behind me ais a grower, my place is sloped down from his, apparently everyone thought I was the one growing
12:31 AM furrywolf: marijuana is this area's main industry, so there's tons of businesses supplying them.
12:31 AM furrywolf: all welding gas dealers sell high-purity non-odorized butane, and there's a few businesses (like the one I pasted above) that exist just to supply butane.
12:32 AM rue_mohr: huh
12:32 AM rue_mohr: I dont think anyone processes any of the pot here
12:32 AM rue_mohr: everyone just rolls and smokes
12:33 AM furrywolf: here it's also made into vape liquids, edibles, ointments, etc...
12:33 AM rue_mohr: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-shipping-10pcs-lot-74HC390-CD74HC390E-DIP16-decimal-counter-new-original/32829308914.html
12:33 AM furrywolf: and butane is the primary extraction method
12:33 AM rue_mohr: yea, people do edibales up here, but just cook it out
12:33 AM rue_mohr: huh
12:34 AM rue_mohr: arg, why chips so expensive!
12:34 AM furrywolf: https://eurekaoxygencompany.com/extraction/ those are the people I get my welding gasses from
12:35 AM furrywolf: they, as you can see, also supply the marijuana industry. heh.
12:36 AM furrywolf: https://bhogart.com/product-category/extractors/extraction-kits/ there's also a couple dozen places selling the extraction equipment itself...
12:37 AM furrywolf: https://bhogart.com/product/bfo-pilot-extraction-system/ they have actual storefronts, some of them on the main roads, where you can walk in and buy equipment like that.
12:38 AM rue_mohr: huh
12:39 AM furrywolf: as I said, it's big business here. heh.
12:39 AM rue_mohr: oooh I dont even want to search for them on ebay, it'll hound me for weeks
12:39 AM furrywolf: butane extraction equipment? heh
12:40 AM rue_mohr: no, 74ls390
12:40 AM furrywolf: ah
12:40 AM furrywolf: look at the shiny on those links. :P
12:40 AM furrywolf: shiny!
12:40 AM rue_mohr: I tried searching for "proper purchase support" but they didn't hound me about that
12:41 AM furrywolf: there's entire stores fill with nothing but shiny like that, and assorted supplies.
12:41 AM rue_mohr: yea, I want to go to china and visit them all
12:41 AM rue_mohr: I hoped to go this year, no
12:42 AM furrywolf: this isn't china. this is the US.
12:42 AM rue_mohr: whaaa, $$$ then?
12:42 AM furrywolf: yep
12:42 AM rue_mohr: I'd preffer to pay 10cea for them, 25c is kinda ok, 50c is avoided, and anything higher is begrudging
12:43 AM furrywolf: I drive by that store (the one I just pasted, with all the shinies) frequently...
12:46 AM rue_mohr: you building anything or just fixing?
12:46 AM furrywolf: right now I'm not doing much of either. I just drive all day.
12:47 AM rue_mohr: to fix things, type things, or build things? :)
12:47 AM furrywolf: work uses all available energy.
12:47 AM rue_mohr: thats what I meant
12:48 AM rue_mohr: hmm, 74ls30 is cheap, but I need invrted inputs
12:48 AM rue_mohr: and a centry gun for mosquitos
12:48 AM furrywolf: speaking of available energy... bbl, bedtime.
12:48 AM rue_mohr: gnight
12:51 AM rue_mohr: oh 4017
08:21 PM zhanx: rue ever have one of those days where you drive around alot to places and fix nothing because every call was not what they said it was on the phone?
08:25 PM furrywolf: heh, two weeks ago I got such a call, and managed to fix it anyway!
08:26 PM furrywolf: call: '88 ford f-150 4.9l i6, cranks, no start, no spark.
08:26 PM zhanx: i got the voip phones are down, need tech as first call
08:26 PM zhanx: no voip phones and a tree took down the phone line
08:27 PM furrywolf: so, load up all my electrical diagnostics stuff... get there, crank it, and it doesn't sound right. pop the distributor cap, and the rotor isn't turning. remove the oil fill cap, shine a flashlight down, and the valves aren't moving. ... not an electrical problem.
08:27 PM zhanx: and it was the same like that all day for the stuff minus the last job that was a server reboot and walk off
08:28 PM zhanx: my day job is similar to rue's
08:29 PM zhanx: tomorrow i am driving 1.5 hours to fix a server the DRAC cable fell out of, that is it
08:30 PM * furrywolf has no idea what a DRAC cable is
08:31 PM zhanx: Dell remote admin console
08:33 PM * furrywolf doesn't get to do things like that
08:41 PM furrywolf: I want a job where I get paid to plug loose cables in, rather than hard labor.
08:41 PM zhanx: learn computer stuff
08:42 PM * zhanx was diesel tech before
08:43 PM furrywolf: heh, then you'll appreciate what was wrong with that ford... fucking PLASTIC cam gear stripped.
08:44 PM zhanx: simple fix but takes time
08:45 PM furrywolf: plastic has no place inside an engine... thanks, ford!
08:46 PM zhanx: dodge, bmw, volvo
08:46 PM zhanx: etc
08:47 PM furrywolf: don't get me started on '96+ BMWs and plastic timing chain guides. :P
08:59 PM * furrywolf randomly pokes around rue's site, and finds the wolfjar picture, and becomes sad again
09:02 PM furrywolf: :(
09:13 PM zhanx: furrywolf, where you from?
09:14 PM furrywolf: far northern california
09:14 PM zhanx: upstate NY, way way upstate
09:14 PM zhanx: I cover the Adirondack mountains for phone and computer support :D
09:15 PM furrywolf: I've been up there once... just driving around.
09:17 PM rue_mohr: of all the things to find
09:17 PM rue_mohr: I think its content in there tho
09:17 PM rue_mohr: I'm awake again
09:17 PM zhanx: nice
09:17 PM zhanx: need to pick your brain
09:17 PM zhanx: a/c is getting hot for the wiring
09:18 PM zhanx: 1.86m on the N to ground for resistance
09:18 PM zhanx: M not m
09:18 PM rue_mohr: furrywolf, so, its better than that jim. I realized that that opto thing starts by building valid state transistions, I can just build the initial transition set from grey transitions
09:18 PM rue_mohr: air conditioner wiring is getting hot?
09:19 PM zhanx: yes
09:19 PM zhanx: and outlet and wall
09:19 PM rue_mohr: is the compressor cycling or just staying on?
09:19 PM zhanx: thinking its the GFCI is bad
09:19 PM zhanx: cycling
09:19 PM furrywolf: bad connections, or drawing excessive current. bad connections are more common, if it's running.
09:19 PM zhanx: a/c tested fine
09:19 PM rue_mohr: ah, more likley the moulded plug ont eh unit
09:19 PM furrywolf: if it's plugged into an outlet, I'd immediately suspect the outlet.
09:19 PM rue_mohr: but outlets do fail too
09:20 PM rue_mohr: watch for "buzzing" GFI plugs, they are about to catch fire
09:20 PM zhanx: outlet is suspect for sure, its getting changed tomorrow
09:20 PM zhanx: its not buzzing but hot anyway
09:20 PM furrywolf: rue_mohr: I figured I'd see what was in "art"... heh.
09:20 PM zhanx: and a/c compressor windings are in spec etc
09:20 PM rue_mohr: we had quite a number of gfi's fail for a while, the fault detect amp started 'leaking' and MELTED the disconnect solinoid coil
09:21 PM rue_mohr: furrywolf, kinda funny how our sites are piled in a similar way eh?
09:21 PM furrywolf: yours is sorted... kinda. :P
09:21 PM rue_mohr: I thought same of yours
09:22 PM rue_mohr: I need to get off my ass, so I'm gonna go code in the shop
09:22 PM * furrywolf curls up into a sad wolfyball
09:25 PM rue_shop4: why sad, you got a new torch dolly!
09:25 PM furrywolf: dunno, your wolfy-stuck-in-a-jar picture is saddening.
09:25 PM rue_shop4: wow, the brute force programs dont have anything new
09:26 PM Tom_L: non productive day
09:26 PM furrywolf: also, dragon things are welcome in ##furry. :P
09:26 PM Tom_L: spent most of it at kids college orientation
09:26 PM zhanx: rue_shop4, brute force is old school
09:26 PM rue_shop4: did I put dragons in there?
09:26 PM zhanx: Tom_L, that is a good day
09:27 PM rue_shop4: zhanx, I couldn't think up an alg!
09:27 PM zhanx: multi threading on the gpu
09:27 PM Tom_L: yeah i suppose
09:27 PM zhanx: cloning the problem in real time
09:27 PM rue_shop4: zhanx, thats just a different way of brute forcing soemthing
09:27 PM Tom_L: he's goin in with 90 credit hrs to start
09:27 PM rue_shop4: per week?
09:27 PM zhanx: its also clustered and 1000% faster
09:27 PM Tom_L: no, he's got that racked up already
09:28 PM rue_shop4: IF you have a cude card with lots of cores
09:28 PM rue_shop4: in how long?
09:28 PM Tom_L: 2 yrs
09:28 PM Tom_L: or maybe 1.5
09:28 PM zhanx: or a bunch of 486's like the nsa
09:28 PM Tom_L: i forget
09:28 PM rue_shop4: hu!? wait, what?
09:28 PM zhanx: like 2.5 million of them
09:29 PM Tom_L: most of his vo tech credits transfer and he's got 2 associates degrees from there now
09:29 PM rue_shop4: well these things got 4000 mins runtime ow
09:29 PM rue_shop4: I dont know how the credits work
09:29 PM Tom_L: enrolled in the college of engineering
09:29 PM rue_shop4: why do credits have hours then
09:29 PM rue_shop4: going in
09:30 PM zhanx: Tom_L, you got me, on that also, does that mean more or less school?
09:30 PM Tom_L: less
09:30 PM Tom_L: he's already completed 90 hrs which most will transfer
09:30 PM zhanx: less money then also, which is good
09:30 PM * rue_shop4 squints and clicks the 'random' button on the jukebox
09:31 PM rue_shop4: ... I usually end up regretting this...
09:33 PM furrywolf: lol
09:33 PM rue_shop4: first one is ok...
09:33 PM rue_shop4: k = 0;
09:33 PM rue_shop4: for( i = 0; i < symbolCount-1; i++) {
09:33 PM rue_shop4: for ( j = i+1; j < symbolCount; j++ ) {
09:33 PM rue_shop4: transitions[k].from = i;
09:33 PM rue_shop4: transitions[k].to = j;
09:33 PM rue_shop4: k++;
09:33 PM rue_shop4: }
09:33 PM rue_shop4: } ...
09:33 PM Tom_L: so i didn't get to test the changes to the gcode i did
09:34 PM * furrywolf perks ears at mention of gcode
09:34 PM rue_shop4: for ( j = i+1; j < symbolCount; j++ ) {
09:34 PM rue_shop4: if (isOneBitDifferent(i, j) {
09:34 PM rue_shop4: transitions[k].from = i;
09:34 PM rue_shop4: and re-run the brute force program...
09:35 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Skate_truck/Skate_Truck1.jpg
09:35 PM Tom_L: furrywolf
09:35 PM Tom_L: making some of those
09:35 PM furrywolf: ah, I know who you are! new nick?
09:35 PM Tom_L: never
09:35 PM Tom_L: i've got a few like rue
09:35 PM rue_shop4: [0,1] [0,2] [0,4] [0,8] [1,3] [1,5] [1,9] [2,3] [2,6] [2,10] [3,7] [3,11] [4,5] [4,6] [4,12] [5,7] [5,13] [6,7] [6,14] [7,15] [8,9] [8,10] [8,12] [9,11] [9,13] [10,11] [10,14] [11,15] [12,13] [12,14] [13,15] [14,15] 32 transistions total.
09:36 PM rue_shop4: those are all the 4 bit grey transitions
09:36 PM furrywolf: tom_itx sounds much more familiar.
09:36 PM rue_shop4: furrywolf, how long ago did you leave #robotics?
09:37 PM rue_shop4: 5 years?
09:37 PM furrywolf: quite a while ago
09:37 PM furrywolf: 10? I don't even remember.
09:38 PM furrywolf: I've done nothing but work non-stop. absolutely no progress in any way, just work, work, work.
09:38 PM furrywolf: still have no money and no shop.
09:38 PM zhanx: sounds like me but i have a 3d printer now,
09:38 PM rue_shop4: hah
09:38 PM zhanx: too bad the kid is sleeping next to me
09:38 PM rue_shop4: I pushed him into it
09:39 PM rue_shop4: we started by widdling wood
09:39 PM zhanx: i wanted to print a new handle
09:39 PM zhanx: yes we did and that failed hard
09:40 PM rue_shop4: did you make the arduino holder?
09:40 PM zhanx: mostly it was my wood working skills
09:41 PM zhanx: oh no, i forgot about that, i need to
09:41 PM zhanx: work it causes CRS
09:43 PM rue_shop4: do you stil have the link to the bracket?
09:43 PM zhanx: yes
09:43 PM rue_shop4: ok slice it up!
09:44 PM zhanx: did, its on stand by for the morning while i am getting ready
09:44 PM rue_shop4: cool
09:44 PM zhanx: i can shower, eat, dress and watch it or at least check it
09:45 PM rue_shop4: today would be much better if it involved some welding
09:45 PM zhanx: still dont trust it to run while i am not home
09:45 PM rue_shop4: yea, best not to for a while
09:45 PM rue_shop4: give it a 100 or so hours of runtime so you know what breaks
09:45 PM rue_shop4: and tighten up the nuts again
09:46 PM zhanx: heck the 20 ish i got has taught me alot
09:46 PM rue_shop4: furrywolf, so, where all the money going?
09:46 PM rue_shop4: rent? food?
09:46 PM furrywolf: yep
09:47 PM zhanx: should i print furrywolf prusa parts?
09:47 PM furrywolf: and an annoying amount gets spent on continuing to work
09:47 PM rue_shop4: sounds like you have the wrong finance manager
09:47 PM rue_shop4: the artist never values their work high enough eh?
09:48 PM rue_shop4: I cant charge for my work, I just cant put the right price on things
09:48 PM zhanx: furrywolf, start collecting junk printers inkjet ones
09:49 PM zhanx: i am up to 4 now again, need 4 more
09:49 PM rue_shop4: how can there be so many good songs on my jukebox and it comes up with 'whats new pussycat'
09:49 PM rue_shop4: summer is passing my by and I still need to get progress on that new cnc
09:49 PM zhanx: rue see, i charge for my work, and then bargain down
09:49 PM Tom_L: what have you done on it?
09:49 PM rue_shop4: maybe I should drag that @#$#@!$%^@#$% piece of channel iron up to the shop
09:50 PM rue_shop4: I made a pile of some metal
09:50 PM Tom_L: it _can_ be done in 6-8 weeks
09:50 PM furrywolf: what do you need junk inkjet printers for?
09:50 PM rue_shop4: I want that channel as a base tho, and I HAVE to use the angle grinder on it
09:50 PM zhanx: 3d printer furrywolf
09:50 PM furrywolf: I have like ten of them.
09:50 PM rue_shop4: furrywolf, but first, charge more for your work
09:51 PM zhanx: tear them apart and get all the 8mm rods out of them
09:51 PM rue_shop4: furrywolf, you can skip the printers if you alreayd have the bin of steppers and 8mm smooth rod
09:51 PM rue_shop4: hahah
09:51 PM furrywolf: rue_shop4: I mentioned that to my current boss a few months ago. his answer was that I should be happy I have a job at all. which, with employment how it is around here, is about right.
09:51 PM zhanx: some i have were 6mm and other 10mm
09:51 PM rue_shop4: ouch
09:51 PM zhanx: furrywolf, that is BS
09:52 PM rue_shop4: what % of monthly is rent?
09:52 PM rue_shop4: I'm gonna go stare at a stupid peice of metal, biab
09:57 PM rue_shop4: ok, it occurs to me, that if I'm going to cut it, I need to know where
09:59 PM zhanx: better measure 3 times
09:59 PM rue_shop4: yea, you know the number I should measure to?
09:59 PM rue_shop4: it'll prolly only take me a half hour or so to get thru it
10:01 PM rue_shop4: ouch, no results from the new program
10:01 PM rue_shop4: this might take a while
10:02 PM rue_shop4: whoa a whole failed start? no solutions from ... how
10:02 PM zhanx: hence why i cant no the number you measure too
10:03 PM rue_shop4: so, I suppose I'm going for a little larger than the sherline
10:03 PM rue_shop4: bit more depth
10:10 PM rue_shop4: hmmm
10:11 PM rue_shop4: I need a machine size
10:11 PM rue_shop4: maybe 6" x 10"?
10:12 PM zhanx: 24" square
10:12 PM rue_shop4: hah, no way
10:13 PM rue_shop4: this is *just* supposed to be a more ridgid version of the sherline
10:13 PM rue_shop4: the other gantry machine I made last year is 7"x7"
10:13 PM rue_shop4: :/ the program isn't finding any solutions
10:13 PM rue_shop4: that cant be right
10:14 PM rue_shop4: maybe I should run a smaller set
10:14 PM rue_shop4: it could be an alg flaw
10:14 PM rue_shop4: which is hard when the alg is brute force
10:15 PM rue_shop4: argf, there's an I beam right behind me for the cnc too
10:16 PM rue_shop4: Tom_L, you know which image is the sketch of yours?
10:19 PM rue_shop4: so I got 8" channel, 4" I-beam, 4" squarestock, peice of 1/2" plate, and a rectangular excersize weight
10:20 PM rue_shop4: my instructions say to make a big-ass ridgid C and attach stuff to it
10:23 PM rue_shop4: linear slides are the problem
10:30 PM rue_shop4: I'm supposed to be working on force-feedback
10:31 PM rue_shop4: its just not self charging
10:31 PM zhanx: guided lugs
10:31 PM rue_shop4: the upgrade is made from a stretched disability cart
10:31 PM rue_shop4: guided lugs?
10:32 PM zhanx: wood to guide the thing in with lugs to charge it
10:32 PM rue_shop4: the drive motors on the new mower are pretty soft, and it needs steering stability
10:32 PM rue_shop4: which I need to do with the caster
10:32 PM rue_shop4: and I dont have a rotation sensor for it yet
10:33 PM rue_shop4: (not wheel rotation, vector)
10:33 PM rue_shop4: oh
10:33 PM rue_shop4: oh no, new idea
10:34 PM rue_shop4: variable cap (which cat tell which 180 span its on) paired with a 180 degree optical sensor
10:34 PM rue_shop4: then I get 1V/10bits *2
10:35 PM rue_shop4: so ~2048 'lines'
10:35 PM rue_shop4: +-
10:35 PM rue_shop4: wonder if I can build...
10:36 PM rue_shop4: :( the plastic injection moulder is patiently waiting in the corner
10:39 PM rue_shop4: a t13 could report the poisiton
10:39 PM rue_shop4: damn, here goes another project
10:39 PM rue_shop4: wait, its an old project
10:46 PM rue_shop4: oh yea, theres a whole box of parts for the new cnc
10:46 PM rue_shop4: _this_ is when I'm awake, why cant the world get with it.
10:49 PM rue_shop4: every project is a voice in my head, and their ALL WAKING UP
11:00 PM rue_shop4: furrywolf, I think there is no cyclic grey code sequence that can be used
11:01 PM rue_shop4: sure there is
11:01 PM rue_shop4: 0,1,3,7,6,4,0
11:02 PM rue_shop4: wtf, where is 0->1
11:03 PM rue_shop4: oh it found 1 solutions
11:03 PM rue_shop4: [6,7]->[3,7]->[1,3]->[1,5]->[4,5]->[0,4]->[0,2]->[2,6]->[4,6]->End of list
11:03 PM rue_shop4: for 3 bit
11:04 PM rue_shop4: so that sucks, grey transitions wont work
11:12 PM furrywolf: that doesn't look cyclic, either.
11:12 PM furrywolf: that is, the end doesn't transition to the star
11:12 PM furrywolf: start
11:13 PM rue_shop4: 6
11:13 PM rue_shop4: so, 6,7,3,1,5,4,0,2,6
11:14 PM rue_shop4: it lists the entire chain, even if it has a bogus tail
11:14 PM rue_shop4: here...
11:15 PM rue_shop4: https://paste.debian.net/1034187/
11:15 PM furrywolf: if you stick to only changing one bit at a time, you're going to need to have a two-transition state to get more positions... because otherwise you just have grey code. :)
11:16 PM rue_shop4: and that can (>= vs >) tell you every grey seqence
11:16 PM furrywolf: I'm too tired to actually think about algorithms seriously right now, though.
11:17 PM rue_shop4: its recursive :)
11:17 PM rue_shop4: I have a hard time with that when I am awake
11:17 PM furrywolf: heh, I usually end up doing brute force things with my own stack variables... more efficient than recursion.
11:18 PM rue_shop4: its ugly, I just wanted to know the answer
11:18 PM rue_shop4: :)
11:18 PM rue_shop4: I have a sensor I want to use thats analog, but I dont know how to build it
11:19 PM furrywolf: my favorite recursive-like program I've written is still my simplest, most-trivial one... a boggle solver. that is really, really, really fast. 1000x1000 boards, etc.
11:19 PM rue_shop4: ?
11:19 PM furrywolf: I've written much more complex ones, but the simplicity and speed of that one was fun.
11:19 PM furrywolf: ? to which part?
11:20 PM rue_shop4: not familir with boggle
11:20 PM rue_shop4: the slide game?
11:20 PM rue_shop4: I wonder if I can make a linear opto using the CDS cells
11:21 PM rue_shop4: CdS?
11:21 PM rue_shop4: anyhow
11:21 PM rue_shop4: if there is a sensor I can 3d print, I'm game
11:21 PM furrywolf: boggle is a word game. you have either a 4x4 or a 5x5 board, and 16 or 25 six-sided die, with a letter on each side. you shake it and the die randomly fall into random positions on the board with random letters up. the players then have to find all words that can be made starting from any letter and stringing together adjacent letters, not using any letter twice.
11:21 PM furrywolf: so, if you have....
11:21 PM rue_shop4: oh
11:21 PM furrywolf: a b c d
11:21 PM furrywolf: e f g h
11:22 PM furrywolf: i j k l
11:22 PM furrywolf: m n o p
11:22 PM rue_shop4: deadbeef
11:22 PM rue_shop4: er, no
11:22 PM rue_shop4: damn
11:22 PM furrywolf: you can make, say, fin
11:22 PM rue_shop4: hmm
11:22 PM rue_shop4: there are lots of things I wish I had time for
11:22 PM furrywolf: lop
11:23 PM rue_shop4: need to port my brain :/
11:23 PM furrywolf: etc. :)
11:23 PM rue_shop4: platform I can service.
11:24 PM furrywolf: it's a very good exercise in basic recursion... used to have students do it.
11:24 PM rue_shop4: towers of hanoi?
11:25 PM furrywolf: no, writing a program to find all the words in a given boggle board.
11:25 PM rue_shop4: yea
11:25 PM rue_shop4: but
11:30 PM rue_shop4: I think the linear opto idea I just had damaged my brain
11:30 PM furrywolf: lol
11:30 PM furrywolf: I think they already exist, too.
11:30 PM rue_shop4: yea, but I dont have $500 to get one
11:31 PM furrywolf: what are you thinking of, exactly?
11:31 PM rue_shop4: so
11:31 PM rue_shop4: the notion is to take a cds cell (ldr) and shine an led on it, put a disc in between that variably blocks it
11:32 PM furrywolf: cds cells suck, and have non-trivial effects.
11:32 PM rue_shop4: the problem is that without some kinda control, the level could be anywhere and you dont know signal from just operating point
11:32 PM rue_shop4: so, the answer is to have a second cell that is a reference, and wrap a feedback circuit that sets the operating point dynamically
11:32 PM furrywolf: they have long-term light effects, non-linearities, etc...
11:33 PM rue_shop4: yea, that can all be eaten by a feedback loop
11:33 PM rue_shop4: I think
11:33 PM rue_shop4: so I drew up a circuit, gonna have to play
11:33 PM furrywolf: what is the point of this, and why does it not use modern photodetectors? :)
11:34 PM rue_shop4: I need an absolute position sensor I can build
11:34 PM rue_shop4: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/robots/mowerbot2/p1020374.jpg
11:34 PM rue_shop4: a) the motors slow down a lot under load, so the steering drift is borderline controllable
11:35 PM rue_shop4: b) if a drive wheel is slipping, it dosn't matter that its sync'd with the other one
11:35 PM rue_shop4: so the caster is the feedback for speed controlling the motors
11:35 PM furrywolf: potentionmeter + lever/chain/rack/cable/etc, magnetic (moving an iron piece into/out of a coil changes its inductance), a strain gauge and something that has forces applied to it, an encoder strip and sensor out an inkjet printer,...
11:35 PM rue_shop4: you balance the speed of the L/R motor based on the castor direction
11:36 PM rue_shop4: cant, continious roateion
11:36 PM furrywolf: oh, when you said absolute position, I figured you meant linear.
11:36 PM rue_shop4: but I want something absolute, cause I want to know where the wheel is, atleast approx, pretty quick out of the gate
11:37 PM rue_shop4: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/robots/mowerbot2/p1040033.jpg
11:37 PM furrywolf: one of the one-bit fancy patterns will do that...
11:37 PM rue_shop4: I have a little opto on the wheel rotation, but I need to know the caster vector
11:37 PM rue_shop4: yes, are there any generators for it?
11:37 PM furrywolf: dunno, I've never looked.
11:37 PM rue_shop4: mm
11:38 PM furrywolf: how about just a magnet on the shaft and a triangle of hall effect sensors?
11:38 PM furrywolf: if you don't need more than 1% accuracy...
11:38 PM rue_shop4: I think its something like you start with half the circle, reduce the arc len based on the number of sensors, toggle the colour and the side your apply the new arc to
11:38 PM rue_shop4: but with a phase offset
11:39 PM rue_shop4: the opto thing has me curious
11:39 PM rue_shop4: there is a capacitive thing thats awesome, but its mechnicaly difficult to couple to
11:39 PM furrywolf: I've seen optical sensor designs that have a varying-width slot, so it's been done... but I can't remember where I saw them.
11:40 PM rue_shop4: I can 3d print a spiral gate
11:40 PM furrywolf: magnet and three hall effect sensors requires very minimal fab work.
11:41 PM rue_shop4: I'd like more resolution
11:41 PM furrywolf: analog inputs. :)
11:41 PM rue_shop4: this is a tech challange now
11:42 PM furrywolf: if sensor A is reading 80%, sensor B 20%, and sensor C 10%, you can assume it's 80% of the way between A and B, on the A side... etc.
11:42 PM rue_shop4: I been playing with cds latley, I have a prototype for a freq gen (1Mhz-10Mhz) thats based on it
11:42 PM rue_shop4: mmm
11:42 PM rue_shop4: I have some linear halls too
11:42 PM furrywolf: stick a 10-turn pot on top of it, and have your robot jog the front wheel around in a circle if it has only one rotation left on either end. :)
11:42 PM rue_shop4: arg, I'm late for bed, being bitten by moquitos, and havn't had supper
11:43 PM rue_shop4: hah
11:43 PM rue_mohr: what do I want for supper, I want to be a robot so I dont have to eat
11:44 PM furrywolf: I could use a lawnmower-bot... did you hear my back got fucked up? can't remember what channels I was in when it happened...
11:45 PM rue_mohr: I dont recall
11:45 PM furrywolf: got read-ended while stopped... totalled my car and my back.
11:45 PM rue_mohr: its easy, just stick a blade on a wheeled platform with a computer on it
11:45 PM rue_mohr: hmm, I keep my eyes on the people behind me when I stop
11:46 PM furrywolf: I was keeping my eyes on the crazy homeless person trying to intentionally jump in front of every car that tried going around him.
11:46 PM rue_mohr: almost everyone in the company gets hit when their stopped
11:46 PM furrywolf: and had been stopped over a minute.
11:46 PM rue_mohr: wtf is it with people hitting stopped cars
11:47 PM furrywolf: people who are either paying no attention to the road, or are in a state where they're unable to process what they see.
11:47 PM rue_mohr: "Warning, lots of distracting warning signs ahead"
11:48 PM furrywolf: but, everything is a lot harder now... can't even keep the house clean.
11:48 PM furrywolf: lawn is about 4ft tall.
11:48 PM rue_mohr: I'v had twice I was about to swing around the person infront of me cause the fellow comming up behind didn't seem to be slowing down
11:48 PM rue_mohr: hmm
11:49 PM rue_mohr: what did you get for support for being hit?
11:49 PM furrywolf: I can't get down half of the boxes I've put on shelves in my storage unit... need to pick up a tiny forklift when I find one.
11:50 PM furrywolf: she had legal minimum liability, and no assets... so I got the initial medical bills paid, and that's it.
11:50 PM * rue_mohr notes to not get into car accedent
11:50 PM rue_mohr: isn't that when you sue her for everything else?
11:51 PM furrywolf: and there's where the "no assets" part comes in.
11:51 PM rue_mohr: huh
11:51 PM rue_mohr: wrong country to get hit in...
11:51 PM rue_mohr: so, you need a mecha suit
11:52 PM furrywolf: she lives in a minimum-income shitty government-funded retirement apartment, and owns nothing, at all. I could probably garnish her SSI for $1/month...
11:52 PM furrywolf: my lawyer checked very thouroughly to make sure she didn't have any hidden assets of any kind... because, of course, if she did, he'd get 30% of them.
11:52 PM rue_mohr: ugh
11:53 PM rue_mohr: and whos car she driving now?
11:53 PM rue_mohr: to hit people with
11:53 PM furrywolf: dunno.
11:53 PM rue_mohr: mmm
11:53 PM rue_mohr: I need to go choose what to have for supper
11:53 PM furrywolf: I trusted my lawyer when he said he failed to find any assets. getting a 30% cut is a very good incentive to do a good job looking for them. heh.
11:54 PM rue_mohr: which is almost as bad as finding it burning when I remmeber in a half hour that I started cooking it
11:54 PM rue_mohr: so, she can go around accidently crippling people and thats ok
11:54 PM furrywolf: he was hoping she had a big retirement nest egg or such... my back is screwed up to the tune of $300k-$500k settlement... which would be $100k+ in his pocket.
11:55 PM furrywolf: yep. america!
11:55 PM rue_mohr: she could run right over trump and everyone would just have to be like, "Meh.."
11:55 PM furrywolf: plus, of course, it's america, so you're fucked if you need health care and aren't already rich.
11:56 PM furrywolf: of course, I'd much rather have a working back than the money...
11:58 PM rue_mohr: yea, zhanx is in the mil. and they worked hard to deny he got hurt
11:59 PM rue_mohr: if its of any conolation, not many people make it out of life unscrewed
11:59 PM furrywolf: heh
11:59 PM furrywolf: time for me to get to bed... bbl.
11:59 PM rue_mohr: I got a buddy les than 40 who has had 4 heart attacks after his doctor insisted he was too young to have problems
