12:00 AM katsmeow: totally irrelavant, i kno
12:03 AM katsmeow: i been putting alcohol on my lack-of-tooth , amaretto and kahlua
12:03 AM rue_mohr: I just thought youd like to get into the assembly programming on the avrs and be able to make them do things
12:03 AM katsmeow: i would, and i have a lot of other things on my mind too
12:03 AM rue_mohr: yea, I'd try to blackmale you into it with a self-guilt trip, but I'm not into it.
12:03 AM katsmeow: like the fisaso at the post office, the general not-worth-as-much-as-a-dog status, the car repairs need doing and no way to get the car into the air because of the dogs, etc etc etc
12:03 AM rue_mohr: I dont think you want to and I just hope you wont convict me for giving up later
12:04 AM * rue_mohr inspects the part he dsigned
12:05 AM katsmeow: sorry
12:05 AM * rue_mohr closes the tiny2313 datasheet
12:06 AM katsmeow: should i delete mine?
12:10 AM rue_mohr: no
12:10 AM rue_mohr: just tell me if your into it
12:10 AM rue_mohr: see if I am too
12:10 AM rue_mohr: ;)
12:11 AM katsmeow: if i am into avr again in a few days, will you be suicidal?
12:11 AM rue_mohr: maybe put the stuff in a box with a 7805, adapter and soldering iron
12:11 AM rue_mohr: no, I might be playing outside tho
12:11 AM rue_mohr: you know how welding weather is
12:11 AM * katsmeow nods
12:12 AM katsmeow: i put up a 24x34 ft barn because of that
12:12 AM rue_mohr: yea, widh I could
12:12 AM katsmeow: part of thr eason i cannot get the car into the air, the ramps i built for the 280 and the Suburban don;t work on the ford, and i cannot do anything about it where the car is now and where the barn is now
12:13 AM rue_mohr: cowling conflixt with the ramps?
12:14 AM katsmeow: angle from slope to level, and tire width
12:14 AM rue_mohr: instead of using the ramps to lift the car, can you use them to keep it level?
12:14 AM katsmeow: no
12:14 AM rue_mohr: when I put the ramps on my truck, it sits level ont eh driveway
12:14 AM katsmeow: the concrete where the car is now is not level, it's patchy concrete, it's unstable
12:15 AM * rue_mohr uses 12' robot to lift kats car
12:15 AM rue_mohr: its not more than 300 lbs, is it?
12:15 AM katsmeow: going to convert the side posts of what was to be the press , to be lifts for some I beam run under the car as needed
12:16 AM katsmeow: about 3600 max, iirc
12:16 AM rue_mohr: hey wait
12:16 AM rue_mohr: why not use the car to pick itself straight up
12:16 AM * rue_mohr tries to render
12:16 AM katsmeow: ?
12:16 AM rue_mohr: front or rear wheel drive?
12:16 AM katsmeow: the hp to lift is not the problem
12:16 AM rue_mohr: wait, kat, you have winches
12:17 AM katsmeow: the level and stable ground to do it on is
12:17 AM rue_mohr: why dont you make a gantry to hang the car from?
12:17 AM rue_mohr: hmm, I'd have to see
12:17 AM katsmeow: because i'll drop the gantry n the car as i assemble it
12:17 AM rue_mohr: from what I'v seen, you could sneeze out a car-lifting gantry in an evening
12:18 AM katsmeow: and all the hitching points for the car weight are under the car, so i'd still need to lift the I-beam run under it
12:18 AM * rue_mohr points to kats 'amazing fabricator' meddel
12:18 AM katsmeow: so why buld a overhead gantry if 4ft posts will list it 2ft
12:19 AM rue_mohr: what about two large Cs that clamp around the car so you can roll it over sideways?
12:19 AM rue_mohr: or 4
12:19 AM katsmeow: i can put some leveling adjusters made from 1" allthread on the feets, set them beside the car, and run I-beam under, hook to, and hit the winch buttons
12:20 AM rue_mohr: I suppose it might still need to be lifted
12:20 AM katsmeow: it just sets back the press a few weeks
12:20 AM rue_mohr: do you have 4 winches?
12:20 AM katsmeow: ueas, but 2 will get one end off the ground, which is what's usually needed
12:21 AM katsmeow: i was gonna double-line one winch on each side
12:22 AM rue_mohr: http://pics.imcdb.org/0is404/seriesi195456model4mx.6605.jpg
12:22 AM rue_mohr: ?
12:22 AM katsmeow: gives me 8000 lbs of lift
12:22 AM katsmeow: brb, ggt
12:24 AM katsmeow: bak
12:24 AM katsmeow: the Gods Must Be Crazy 1
12:24 AM rue_mohr: well yea
12:24 AM katsmeow: :-P
12:25 AM rue_mohr: it was relivent to the conversation we were having
12:25 AM katsmeow: but not practical to changing the oil, the angles are wrong
12:25 AM * rue_mohr doubles over and falls off chair
12:26 AM * rue_mohr recomposes
12:26 AM rue_mohr: well, yea.
12:29 AM rue_mohr: well, unless you have a leaking rear seal, in which case its all automatic
12:29 AM rue_mohr: /:
12:29 AM rue_mohr: /:)
12:29 AM katsmeow: it's got many exhaust leaks, cannot get to the oil filter from the top, bushings on tranny shift link need replacing at both ends, etc etc
12:29 AM rue_mohr: it wouldn't be a mchine if it didn't come with a todo list
12:29 AM katsmeow: the catalytic convertor has beenit's muffler for 10 years, the pipe into the muffler rotted out and the muffler fell off one day
12:29 AM rue_mohr: amazing
12:29 AM rue_mohr: usually the cat is whats missing
12:29 AM katsmeow: i bet it's stuffed up too
12:29 AM rue_mohr: mine is a carefully craft section of pipe
12:29 AM rue_mohr: came that way
12:30 AM rue_mohr: that reminds me, something on the exhaust is loose again
12:30 AM katsmeow: they supposed to be replaced every 50,000 miles, i think, and the car rolled over 200,000 this year
12:30 AM rue_mohr: I got a muffler shop to fix things up, as I was driving home it occured to me something was loose, turns out a bolt was missing, easy fix
12:30 AM rue_mohr: dont know if they were going for a callback or not
12:31 AM rue_mohr: you rolled the car!
12:31 AM rue_mohr: thats really bad for the paint ya know!
12:32 AM * katsmeow nods :-|
12:33 AM katsmeow: car was in a front collision before i got it, broke off a couple bolts from head to exhaust manifold, the leaking heat has burned the paint where the rodents have chewed it off under the hood, and for 15 years i could do nothing about it because of dogs
12:34 AM katsmeow: i will be dealing with aftermath of thios E$%&^RTHWR(WN B dogs the rest of my time living here
12:35 AM katsmeow: it's incredible the exhauist valves have not warped or cracked
12:36 AM katsmeow: my Bridgeport knee mill has been sitting out inthe woods for 15 years at least, and the car engine i got ~1998 to make a solar steam plant is surely siezed solid now
12:36 AM katsmeow: i went out and petted them both today
12:37 AM katsmeow: i am not 40 any more, i am 60, my abilities to move such things has changed, physically, financially, etc etc, and ditto building the rest of the house to enclose them
12:38 AM rue_shop3: yea, 12' robot
12:56 AM * katsmeow tosses her 4" dial calipers into the trash because they are intermittant,,, mostly dead
01:14 AM rue_shop3: kat, do you know how to make bailing wire pipe clamps?
01:17 AM katsmeow: seen them, commercially made, never tried to make them
01:17 AM katsmeow: wire, bolt, nut
01:19 AM katsmeow: http://images.toolplanet.com/Popup/WS-W1315__1.jpg
01:19 AM katsmeow: http://www.mustangsunlimited.com/productImages/image.axd/i.301/w.1000/h.1000/Wire+Style+Hose+Clamp+2-3+8++68+70+390+428+Mustang_L.jpg
01:20 AM katsmeow: https://www.z1motorsports.com/images/Z32HeaterHoseClamp.jpg
01:20 AM rue_shop3: hmm thought i'd seen a simpler one
01:20 AM rue_shop3: just wrapped and twisted it, funny enough, its the ONLY fitting NOT leaking
01:20 AM katsmeow: http://images.spares4appliances.co.uk/images/products/zoom/1387836805-61970900.jpg
01:20 AM rue_shop3: some of those are good ones
01:21 AM rue_shop3: ok, no gas fitting for rue
01:21 AM * katsmeow waves gnites
01:23 AM zhanx: evening rue_shop3
01:29 AM rue_shop3: hey
01:30 AM zhanx: sorry waited
01:32 AM zhanx: cant seem to find my taps, searched everywhere for them, are the harbor freight ones worth it?
01:32 AM rue_mohr: taps?
01:32 AM zhanx: to make my hobbed bolt
01:32 AM rue_mohr: ah
01:32 AM rue_mohr: got a dremel with cutting wheel?
01:33 AM zhanx: yep
01:33 AM zhanx: well air pencil grinder
01:34 AM rue_mohr: k, use cutting disc to make axil slots
01:34 AM rue_mohr: damnit just got in from the shop
01:34 AM rue_mohr: need to give you numbers
01:34 AM zhanx: got freezing rain today
01:34 AM rue_mohr: do that in a min, correcting a design
01:34 AM rue_mohr: ?
01:34 AM zhanx: 4 inches of ice !
01:34 AM rue_mohr: when did you ,move to alaska?
01:34 AM zhanx: upstate NY
01:34 AM zhanx: check it
01:35 AM zhanx: 2-4" of snow become all freezing rain
01:35 AM rue_mohr: remember trump said global warming is just a myth
01:35 AM zhanx: and Trudeu went to India and got tariff's raised
01:36 AM rue_mohr: which ones?
01:36 AM zhanx: Imports on food from Canada from 10% to like 30% depending the type
01:36 AM zhanx: Canada has problems too
01:37 AM rue_mohr: kinda good
01:37 AM rue_mohr: we need to encourage farming
01:37 AM zhanx: like you spent 40 million fight vets in court and paid a terrorist 15 million not to go to court.
01:37 AM rue_mohr: I live in an area where farms are being turned into subdivisions
01:37 AM zhanx: rue_mohr: not is stuff they can't grow in india
01:38 AM zhanx: no*
01:38 AM rue_mohr: ioh exports?
01:38 AM rue_mohr: hah, yea, our govt dosn't want to encourage jobs
01:38 AM zhanx: well exports for you imports to them
01:38 AM zhanx: etc lumber
01:39 AM zhanx: my area ships oak north, you ship pine to us
01:39 AM zhanx: its weird
01:39 AM rue_mohr: ?
01:39 AM rue_mohr: pine is crap wood tho
01:39 AM zhanx: 99% of the oak cut in the area is shipped to Canada
01:39 AM rue_mohr: wait, its almost extinct
01:40 AM rue_mohr: we like oak
01:40 AM zhanx: the pine you send south is lumber for housing framing
01:40 AM rue_mohr: we use spruce
01:40 AM zhanx: might be that
01:40 AM zhanx: spruce is still a pine tree
01:40 AM rue_mohr: pine turns into cement
01:41 AM rue_mohr: working on the pine houses here is a pain in the ass
01:41 AM zhanx: Will be in Canada monday again
01:41 AM zhanx: Server repairs again
01:41 AM rue_mohr: screws break off, nails crumple
01:41 AM rue_mohr: you should drop in, my workstation needs the heatsinks blown out
01:41 AM zhanx: lol
01:42 AM zhanx: not what i do
01:42 AM rue_mohr: have to get a printer going before I fall asleep
01:42 AM zhanx: i swap parts for a living now
01:43 AM zhanx: then hook up my laptop and let them remote it
01:44 AM zhanx: but really this new generation of dell powerservers seems to have issues with the DRAC card
01:44 AM zhanx: changed out a lot of them
01:54 AM rue_shop3: 12 is what fraction of 80?
01:54 AM rue_shop3: 6.67
01:54 AM rue_shop3: hmm
02:25 AM rue_mohr: :| what do I do if I realize one of the kids in the robotics program dosn't have the nack
02:25 AM rue_mohr: :S
02:26 AM zhanx: take your time
02:27 AM zhanx: my oldest doesn't have the "nack"
02:27 AM zhanx: but rue_mohr after 5 years he is better on computer then all his friends
11:31 AM rue_bed: the nack is like flux between a soul and technology tho
11:31 AM rue_bed: you dont have to try, it just goes
12:16 PM rue_mohr: I know lots of people without the nack, when something goes wrong, their up the creek
03:35 PM Tom_L: do nacks come in flavors?
04:09 PM * katsmeow l0.0ks around
04:39 PM rue_mohr: possibly
04:39 PM katsmeow: oh
04:39 PM rue_mohr: because a "green thumb" is a nack
04:40 PM katsmeow: what's a nack ?
04:40 PM rue_mohr: but I dont know if many people who have a green thumb work with computers, so we wouldn't know
04:40 PM rue_mohr: the nack is a flux or sort
04:40 PM katsmeow: it's not im my dictionaries
04:40 PM rue_mohr: someone who has the nack can make things work
04:40 PM rue_mohr: and *just knows stuff*
04:41 PM katsmeow: knack
04:41 PM rue_mohr: people who walk up to a computer and it just catches fire, do not have it
04:42 PM rue_mohr: people who dont ahve it *need* turnkey, and if anything goes wrong, their up the creek
04:43 PM katsmeow: but those who engage in text communication, but cannot spell, have difficulty.... but this doesn;t explain why people who can spell have difficulty communicating
04:44 PM rue_mohr: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8vHhgh6oM0
04:47 PM katsmeow: yep, yep
04:49 PM katsmeow: aunt and uncle visit, i was told to go away, not bother anyone, and stay out of trouble, so i found the basement, found a 5-tube ac/dc radio, it was broken in half, i reassembled it and listened to the northern version of local radio
04:50 PM katsmeow: an hr later, was being called, i came up, said i'd beenlistening to the radio, they said that was impossible, and what an imagination i must have
04:50 PM katsmeow: uncle went down and came back up all surpised saying the radio worked fine and i had no imagination
04:51 PM katsmeow: lesson i should havelearned : don;t play with adults, you cannot win
04:58 PM katsmeow: ...
04:58 PM rue_mohr: I fixed the weedeater while the aduts argued about how to
05:34 PM katsmeow: bbbl, watching 10 minutes of news, then back outside to play with steel
05:44 PM Tom_L: knack knack...
08:37 PM rue_mohr: but I'm worried the kid dosn't have a knack for technology
08:38 PM rue_mohr: which means he will never be able to do anything with what I can teach him
08:38 PM rue_mohr: and latley I'm reserved about things that look like a waste of time
08:40 PM rue_mohr: when people with the knack are introduced to something new, they usually do amazing things with it instantly, and then get borred and go do amazing things with other stuff
08:40 PM Tom_L: just one kid?
08:40 PM rue_mohr: which is not happening with this kid
08:40 PM rue_mohr: this kid is two handfulls
08:40 PM Tom_L: that's good fer ya
08:41 PM rue_mohr: I typically have to keep him going on two things at once
08:41 PM rue_mohr: no
08:41 PM rue_mohr: I'd rather have 5 kids at once who have the knack
08:41 PM Tom_L: where'd he come from?
08:41 PM rue_mohr: its interesting,
08:41 PM Tom_L: i know the feeling
08:41 PM rue_mohr: from all other the place I'm hearing people saying they know this kid and he's a peice of work
08:42 PM Tom_L: i had a good machinist in my catia class but he couldn't even navigate a pc AT ALL
08:42 PM Tom_L: grown man
08:42 PM rue_mohr: yea
08:42 PM Tom_L: he never did get it
08:42 PM rue_mohr: was he good at building something that was planned or designing stuff?
08:43 PM Tom_L: i told him multiple times how to make directories etc and he just couldn't get it
08:43 PM Tom_L: he ran manual machines all his life as i understand it... not sure how good he was
08:44 PM rue_mohr: but could he design things or just make operate the machines
08:44 PM rue_mohr: the fellow doign the sprayers does not have it
08:44 PM Tom_L: probably just a monkey but i think he did tooling etc
08:44 PM rue_mohr: he can do the steps if everything is working
08:44 PM rue_mohr: if one thing faults he's stuck
08:45 PM rue_mohr: and thats life without the nack
08:45 PM rue_mohr: if you have the nack, you can figure out to make it work (or die trying)
08:45 PM rue_mohr: if you dont, your just stuck
08:45 PM rue_mohr: at work, I have a customer with a phone system
08:45 PM rue_mohr: every time she goes near it, everything breaks
08:45 PM rue_mohr: she tries, she does, no knack
08:46 PM rue_mohr: the knack is real
08:47 PM rue_mohr: Tom_L, do you or have you ever played guitar?
08:47 PM Tom_L: knacks come in different flavors though
08:47 PM Tom_L: no i've never played an instrument
08:47 PM rue_mohr: interseting
08:47 PM Tom_L: tried violin in grade school
08:48 PM Tom_L: for maybe a week or two :D
08:48 PM rue_mohr: :)
08:48 PM rue_mohr: if you kow people ask, almost 100% of the programmers I'v known have or do play guitar
08:48 PM Tom_L: i can remember many many things but if you put me in a kitchen with simple directions i'm lost there
08:48 PM Tom_L: ^^ makes sense
08:49 PM Tom_L: that part of my brain is off
08:49 PM Tom_L: but i can probably still tell you how to rebuild a vw engine down to the last valve setting
08:50 PM Tom_L: or quite a few others for that matter
08:50 PM Tom_L: funny how we're put together
08:51 PM rue_mohr: yep, I'm working on it
08:51 PM Tom_L: i doubt you figure it out
08:51 PM Tom_L: there's always a twist
08:51 PM rue_mohr: I have faith
08:51 PM rue_mohr: :/
08:51 PM rue_mohr: anyhow
08:52 PM rue_mohr: I have to, my existence depends on it
08:52 PM rue_mohr: so I'll do whatever I can
08:52 PM rue_mohr: everyting I do opens up more I can do
08:52 PM Tom_L: pro create then, that's a start
08:52 PM rue_mohr: I just have to hope I know when I get there
08:52 PM Tom_L: that's what carries us forward
08:53 PM rue_mohr: that dosn't save me
08:53 PM rue_mohr: seems I'm a different bird
08:53 PM Tom_L: there are no two alike
08:53 PM Tom_L: not even twins
08:53 PM Tom_L: but they come the closest
08:55 PM Tom_L: i think every generation skips one too
08:55 PM Tom_L: i am much much more like my grandfather than my father by far
08:56 PM Tom_L: my grandfather had the 'knack'
08:56 PM Tom_L: much simpler times then though
08:58 PM rue_mohr: apparently living with people dosn't work for me
08:58 PM Tom_L: it's a tough road for sure
08:59 PM rue_mohr: and I cant find a mate, so I gave up
08:59 PM Tom_L: i was around your age
08:59 PM rue_mohr: so I'll focus on myself, see if I can hold it togethor long enough to see the light from the supernova
08:59 PM rue_mohr: (8k-10k years)
09:02 PM rue_mohr: I have to make sure I dont focus purely on survival tho, if I dont know how to LIVE then there isn't much point existing
09:02 PM Tom_L: learn to live now then you will know how
09:03 PM rue_mohr: I'm pretty sure I'v worked out how to buricratically dodge anything that defines dieding
09:03 PM rue_mohr: SOMETHING THAT IS FREAKING ME OUT is brain failure, I'm showing problems I dont like
09:04 PM Tom_L: aging
09:04 PM rue_mohr: no, like melatonin problems
09:04 PM rue_mohr: and putting salt int eh fridge
09:04 PM rue_mohr: and not being able to remember names I know
09:04 PM Tom_L: heh, i do stupid shit like that
09:04 PM rue_mohr: and loss of word recall
09:04 PM Tom_L: i've never been good with names
09:05 PM rue_mohr: I'm not, but when I know someone I should be able to pull up their name
09:05 PM rue_mohr: lets see how I do on missing words by definition
09:05 PM Tom_L: i run across alot of ppl though
09:05 PM Tom_L: but even the ones that are closer i forget sometimes
09:06 PM Tom_L: seems they need to have value to me or i forget
09:06 PM Tom_L: and i have absolutely no patience for people
09:07 PM Tom_L: unless they can either keep up or exceed my ability
09:07 PM rue_mohr: 'sea sick pills' .... ... nope
09:07 PM rue_mohr: 'tukey chemical makes you sleepy' ... triptophin
09:07 PM Tom_L: fail on both...
09:08 PM Tom_L: dramamine
09:08 PM rue_mohr: 'point where water comes out of the ground for town supply' aquifer
09:08 PM Tom_L: finally...
09:08 PM rue_mohr: ' bad oil based stuff in blood' cholesterol
09:08 PM Tom_L: didn't know that
09:08 PM Tom_L: just knew it was bad
09:09 PM rue_mohr: ' person @ meuseum in char of collecting things' .... .... nope
09:09 PM Tom_L: i wish i had her ability to remember
09:09 PM Tom_L: curator
09:09 PM Tom_L: +1
09:10 PM rue_mohr: since when is the sleep stuff in turkey not triptophin?
09:10 PM Tom_L: couldn't tell you what it is
09:11 PM Tom_L: https://www.livescience.com/41543-thanksgiving-myth-busted-eating-turkey-won-t-make-you-sleepy.html
09:11 PM Tom_L: lies!
09:12 PM rue_mohr: whatever
09:12 PM Tom_L: a large pasta meal makes me sleepy
09:13 PM rue_mohr: I have to count, size and map the different neural groups in the brain
09:13 PM rue_mohr: I'm having a hard time, it looks like nobody has dont it before
09:13 PM rue_mohr: just physically
09:14 PM rue_mohr: getting the data I need to work it out is a challange
09:14 PM rue_mohr: there are like 3 to 5 slices of the areas of the brain and to hell if thats all I can find
09:14 PM rue_mohr: almost everything is one of those ~4 standard slices
09:15 PM rue_mohr: from what I have learned about 60% of the brain is just wiring
09:15 PM rue_mohr: not actually active neural matter
09:15 PM Tom_L: i believe that
09:16 PM Tom_L: i think my dog is smarter than me sometimes and he's got a pea brain
09:16 PM rue_mohr: eldstimers eats that wiring
09:16 PM Tom_L: but he knows how to get what he wants
09:16 PM rue_mohr: its like going from a 700 billion bit computer to 100 million
09:17 PM rue_mohr: I have some estimates (somewhere) on the size of the brains network (depth and width in neurons)
09:17 PM Tom_L: ok, what about this.. can the brain multitask?
09:17 PM rue_mohr: its shallow and FFFFing wide
09:18 PM rue_mohr: there almost always two conciousness' going
09:18 PM rue_mohr: your used to it, so you dont regard it so
09:18 PM rue_mohr: but everytime you question what your doing, its between them
09:19 PM rue_mohr: there is more, but its sentient
09:20 PM rue_mohr: the brain is a massivly parallel machine, that, from what I can tell, works things out MOSTLY, by considering every option at once, and filtering out the good answers
09:20 PM Tom_L: ladder logic
09:20 PM rue_mohr: }:] I'm sure I can reverse-engineer myself out of this
09:21 PM rue_mohr: I think I have a good start, I dont know if I can do it in time
09:21 PM rue_mohr: I hope so, "my existence depends on it"
09:22 PM rue_mohr: iirc, the brain is only like 8-12 neural layers deep
09:22 PM rue_mohr: super shallow considering its got like 100G neurons
09:23 PM rue_mohr: so, for a bad calc..
09:24 PM rue_mohr: 8G wide by 12 deep
09:24 PM Tom_L: https://www.technologyreview.com/s/511421/the-brain-is-not-computable/

09:24 PM rue_mohr: what sucks is that video cards dont have enough ram yet to simulate directly
09:24 PM rue_mohr: yea I'v heard all that
09:24 PM rue_mohr: its a state machine
09:25 PM rue_mohr: modern computers have enough power
09:25 PM rue_mohr: its like being in 1975 and having built a 3d printer, but not having modeling and slicing software
09:25 PM rue_mohr: "f***"
09:25 PM Tom_L: heh
09:25 PM rue_mohr: :)
09:26 PM Tom_L: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/09/090904071908.htm
09:26 PM Tom_L: 10 years
09:26 PM Tom_L: you still have time
09:26 PM rue_mohr: I'm not intrestined in anyone elses work
09:26 PM rue_mohr: cause they haven't succeeded
09:26 PM rue_mohr: they just horiz lapped the same image 3 times
09:27 PM Tom_L: thing about humans is we don't learn from the past
09:27 PM rue_mohr: and different parts of the brain are wired differently, so even the 3 subinterconnection layers shown in that image are of no help
09:28 PM rue_mohr: we have the hardware, we just dont know how to use it
09:28 PM rue_mohr: a pgu might be fast enough even tho all the data needs to be swapped out a few times
09:28 PM rue_mohr: I wonder how long it takes to swap the whole memory space from a gpu to a cpu
09:29 PM rue_mohr: rue?... dosn't the mud come off your shoes when you tap them to music like you have been for like,... a half hour?
09:29 PM * rue_mohr loos down at floor....
09:29 PM rue_mohr: :S
09:30 PM rue_mohr: hmm, is that 'sweep up' or 'sweep under rug' quantity....
09:32 PM rue_shop3: I get lonley, so I will have to make sure I keep the human race going to some level
10:13 PM rue_mohr: katsmeow,
10:13 PM rue_mohr: found a driver
10:13 PM rue_mohr: chip
10:13 PM rue_mohr: 600mA totem driver
10:13 PM katsmeow: ok
10:13 PM rue_mohr: really cheap
10:13 PM rue_mohr: LM555
10:13 PM katsmeow: i thought the 555 only pulled up
10:13 PM rue_mohr: pin 3
10:13 PM rue_mohr: totem
10:14 PM katsmeow: you can make it go high (left), go low (right), and go neutral (off)?
10:15 PM rue_mohr: just high and low is ok
10:15 PM katsmeow: oh
10:15 PM rue_mohr: the lack of current control sucks
10:15 PM katsmeow: i did not know that
10:15 PM rue_mohr: I might just do series resistor for current control
10:15 PM rue_mohr: turns out, they draw 60mA
10:15 PM rue_mohr: not sure if they burn up tho
10:16 PM katsmeow: ouch
10:16 PM rue_mohr: I dont know how much I need to make them flip a card
10:16 PM rue_mohr: so I'm making the rest
10:59 PM zhanx: freezing rain all day
11:01 PM katsmeow: temp here dropped 20F from 4:30pm to 6pm
11:07 PM rue_mohr: it was a warm day?
11:07 PM rue_mohr: for kat?
11:07 PM * rue_mohr tires to not think about 5V regulators
11:07 PM katsmeow: no, cool, like air conditioned , mostof the day
11:07 PM rue_mohr: bottle some up, gonna need it
11:08 PM katsmeow: rue,i was cutting steel with "body grinder" all day, my paws are sore
11:08 PM katsmeow: and they still lack fingerprints from playing in concrete last week
11:09 PM katsmeow: i am sorry i am not Kryptonian
11:10 PM rue_mohr: np, you just have to say that you have a headache and aren't in the mood tonight
11:10 PM rue_mohr: I'm sure you will ask if your interested
11:11 PM katsmeow: you said that yesterday
11:11 PM katsmeow: and the day before
11:11 PM katsmeow: and the day before
11:11 PM rue_mohr: I'm sure I'v only said it twice :)
11:12 PM katsmeow: i am sure i have said i am in pain too
11:12 PM rue_mohr: you did
11:13 PM katsmeow: it's not like i am idle, i just did 2 hdds swaps and doing a fdisk now
11:13 PM rue_mohr: you dont ahve to do anything
11:13 PM rue_mohr: its still in the back of mymmind
11:13 PM rue_mohr: hmm pager motors might be too weak
11:13 PM katsmeow: mine too, it would be wonderful to sprinkle avr around the house and property
11:17 PM rue_mohr: :S hmm
11:17 PM rue_mohr: maybe if I do short pulses of 5V
11:20 PM rue_mohr: 100ms of 5V looks reliable
11:28 PM rue_mohr: kat, I just came up with a totally different idea
11:28 PM rue_mohr: make a former
11:29 PM rue_mohr: make the whole segment for the 7seg a coil with a paper cover
11:29 PM rue_mohr: use a magnet on the backplate
11:29 PM rue_mohr: use the end pins as commutators, make each segment into the motor
11:30 PM rue_mohr: 8-| I didn't need to buy $25 of chineese motors?
11:30 PM rue_mohr: katsmeow, it seems that the inter-commutator torque on these vibrator motors is horrid
11:30 PM katsmeow: that's a cute idea, if i understand it
11:31 PM rue_mohr: A --(=========)-- B
11:31 PM rue_mohr: ^ segment is a coil
11:31 PM katsmeow: can the motors turn the paper tube with white paint on one side and black on the other?
11:31 PM rue_mohr: leave it flat
11:32 PM rue_mohr: one side painted
11:32 PM katsmeow: more air resistance if it's flat
11:32 PM rue_mohr: the pager motors are having trouble
11:32 PM rue_mohr: just needs to flip over 180
11:32 PM katsmeow: yeas
11:32 PM katsmeow: a tube willhave more momentum, and less air resistance to turn
11:33 PM katsmeow: turn it against a stop in each direction
11:33 PM katsmeow: but yea, go for the otehr idea
11:33 PM rue_mohr: yes, I'm planning to use stops
11:33 PM rue_mohr: the coil-segment dosn't need the stop of course
11:35 PM rue_mohr: I suppose I can use watered down white glue to hold the coil?
11:35 PM katsmeow: what if the coupling tween the motor and segment was sloopy, to let the motor come up to some speed before hitting the segment?
11:35 PM katsmeow: err, sloppy
11:35 PM rue_mohr: its pretty sloppy now, it got jiggle room
11:36 PM rue_mohr: but you know how poor motors can stall between commutation?
11:36 PM rue_mohr: its doing that
11:36 PM katsmeow: yeas
11:36 PM rue_mohr: with a 5V pulse its better, but dosn't look to be completely reliable
11:37 PM katsmeow: can you drive it like a stepper? put huge volts to it and limit the current?
11:38 PM rue_mohr: I'm not sure on its limits
11:38 PM katsmeow: 60ma?
11:39 PM rue_mohr: no, its higher
11:39 PM katsmeow: current = torque, get one commutator segment up to current asap before it dies in the switch to the next on?
11:41 PM rue_mohr: well, there is also the question of flipping vs holding
11:41 PM * katsmeow hands rue a LM431
11:41 PM rue_mohr: how much current to hold the card vs how much to clip it?
11:41 PM rue_mohr: 431?
11:41 PM katsmeow: you need to hold it?
11:41 PM katsmeow: programmable current regulator
11:41 PM katsmeow: one resistor
11:41 PM rue_mohr: oh 431
11:42 PM rue_mohr: it does better with a stop
11:42 PM rue_mohr: maybe the trick is to phase the motor carefully to max the torqe at the stop points for best starting torque
11:43 PM rue_mohr: ok, I'll make the parts for a whole digit, and give it a chance
11:43 PM katsmeow: transmission betweenthe motor and the segment?
11:43 PM rue_mohr: the segment is semi-reliable
11:44 PM rue_mohr: heh
11:44 PM rue_mohr: did I mention the motor is 0.2" dia?
11:44 PM katsmeow: i think so
11:44 PM rue_mohr: the motor body.
11:44 PM * katsmeow nods,, pager vibrator motor
11:44 PM rue_mohr: yep, a small one
11:45 PM rue_mohr: I WANTED cdrom tray/spindle motors
11:45 PM katsmeow: can the motor spin a propellor and air blow the segment around?
11:45 PM rue_mohr: :)
11:45 PM rue_mohr: I thought of solinoids too
11:46 PM rue_mohr: for spindle motors, to get the motor out of the way of the digit, I could take a semi-ridgid fishing line and make it a rotary transmission to the semgnet
11:47 PM katsmeow: use the outer body of the motor as a pulley, and a paper tube segment as the larger pulley
11:50 PM katsmeow: hello
11:52 PM katsmeow: bike spokes are sturdy and usually very straight
11:54 PM rue_mohr: hmm
11:55 PM rue_mohr: the other project I was playing with today missed too
11:55 PM rue_mohr: I been working on making an encoder
11:56 PM rue_mohr: I got some 4mmx7mm bearings
11:56 PM rue_mohr: and a 7mm milling bit
11:56 PM rue_mohr: the idea was to drill out a 10mm bolt,
11:56 PM rue_mohr: use the milling bit to square up the bottom of the hole
11:56 PM katsmeow: it must be that flat?
11:57 PM katsmeow: why?
11:57 PM rue_mohr: push the bearings in, add 4mm shaft, use 3d printed case with pcb lid that held the drilled out bolt/bearings
11:57 PM rue_mohr: well, that was the plan
11:57 PM katsmeow: you do not want the inner race or shield of the bearing to contact the bolt, you *want* that drill-bit cone shape bottom
11:58 PM rue_mohr: ok
11:58 PM rue_mohr: point being, the lathe overdrills / bores it
11:58 PM katsmeow: i would avoid the bottom of the hole being flat at all costs
11:58 PM rue_mohr: the bearing was loose in the drilled out bolt
11:58 PM rue_mohr: still being overdrilled
11:58 PM rue_mohr: I can try undersizing the hole
11:58 PM katsmeow: use a 7mm bit?
11:59 PM rue_mohr: but that project was a bit of a bust today
11:59 PM rue_mohr: I started with that
11:59 PM katsmeow: 0.27 bit
11:59 PM rue_mohr: do you know how the inter--- for the ignition timing works on a gmc engine?
