12:00 AM Tom_L: rue_ what's different about the can lids?
12:03 AM ^kat^: and why not be clamping to the can about 1/2 way down?
12:03 AM ^kat^: just a O> saddle and a tiny bungee cord
12:03 AM Tom_L: they like the quick release apparently
12:03 AM Tom_L: 1 handed can change
12:03 AM Tom_L: so i'm told
12:03 AM ^kat^: i can release a bungee with one hand too
12:03 AM Tom_L: trying to redesign some of the parts so they work better
12:05 AM rue_: Tom_L, they have 4 different qualities to 'crimp' on the top of the spray can
12:05 AM rue_: kat Its a 'copy' (modified) of someone elses design (they died, I had nothing to do with it (this time))
12:06 AM ^kat^: is Tom redesigning/improving it? if not, i can shut up
12:06 AM rue_: they "like them like that" we honestly cant understand why
12:06 AM ^kat^: or, i can just shut up
12:06 AM rue_: no, your advice is great
12:06 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/Extra/A9_can_grip.jpg
12:07 AM ^kat^: easy, they are afraid that changing anything will fork it up even worse
12:07 AM Tom_L: have you tried those yet?
12:07 AM rue_: no, we been fighting other things
12:07 AM ^kat^: do what they want, and send them a free improved model sample
12:07 AM rue_: they dont talk, its part of a larger issue
12:08 AM ^kat^: Tom, i approve of the thin lip to get under the thing on the can
12:08 AM rue_: its part of a problem
12:12 AM Tom_L: did the jig speed up A12 production?
12:12 AM rue_: the size of the lip under the can changes with cans off different lines of the same factory
12:12 AM ^kat^: however, if that location on the can varies by can, praps a str8-sides v instead of the swooft curve may work better
12:12 AM rue_: not yet, we had just made a whole wack of them
12:12 AM Tom_L: i got a handfull here to
12:12 AM Tom_L: o
12:12 AM rue_: still going thru the existing
12:12 AM rue_: since you made those, we have had 7 orders
12:12 AM rue_: to put it in scale
12:12 AM ^kat^: do the cans vary in heigth?
12:12 AM rue_: 2 orders, 7 peices total
12:12 AM rue_: no, the neck of the damn things varries a lot
12:12 AM rue_: you would think they were hand crimped
12:12 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/Extra/A12_visejaw.jpg
12:12 AM rue_: with like a wine bottle press
12:12 AM ^kat^: then clamp the can up into a cone
12:12 AM Tom_L: kat, i made a jig to mill the slots for a part
12:12 AM rue_: nice tom
12:12 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/Extra/A12_P2_2.jpg
12:12 AM Tom_L: rue_, you saw those already
12:12 AM rue_: part of the issue is that sprung retainer bar, if you oversinch the spring it gets bent
12:13 AM rue_: but there is a 3" model too, which has no body space
12:13 AM Tom_L: A10?
12:13 AM rue_: heck, the 6" has no body space
12:13 AM rue_: yea, I want to make A10 a wire strap
12:14 AM rue_: and change A9 to be more like a U
12:14 AM rue_: but the width of the U cant be defined
12:14 AM rue_: we just found out that there is someone using another brand of paint too
12:14 AM rue_: different can again
12:14 AM Tom_L: do you have any of these cans?
12:14 AM rue_: nope
12:15 AM * ^kat^ thought she was the queen of jigs here
12:15 AM rue_: kat, your a jigmaster for sure
12:15 AM ^kat^: jigs hold things, you are designing all around a can holder
12:15 AM Tom_L: maybe you should have a few different can styles
12:15 AM * ^kat^ shuts up and bites her tongue
12:15 AM rue_: no i want to hear your thoughts
12:16 AM Tom_L: you ever get this down, i can get you good drawings
12:16 AM rue_: all the cans have some sort of a narrowing in there
12:16 AM ^kat^: don;t grab the can at the neck, too many unknown variables, it;s not working for you anyhow, you will lose the customer
12:16 AM rue_: they rejected someone else who made one that grabbed the can
12:17 AM rue_: we weren't the first to try to fill the gap when the origional guy died
12:17 AM rue_: these ones are really complex to make
12:17 AM Tom_L: yeah this is the design they like apparently
12:17 AM rue_: and really intollerant of error
12:17 AM rue_: yea, enough to pay $120ea for them
12:17 AM rue_: they used this design for a long time, they like it, dispite a number of problems
12:18 AM Tom_L: like she said, using a chamfer instead of a step might be better to grip the can seal
12:18 AM ^kat^: then why are they complaining?
12:18 AM rue_: kat that A9 peice, breaks off between the can C and the first set of tabs, its aluminum, stress fracture
12:19 AM ^kat^: Tom made it of steel, problem solved?
12:19 AM rue_: kat, that is an awesome point
12:19 AM rue_: toms are alum, but we worked out a design using 1/4" instead of 1/8"
12:19 AM Tom_L: http://ruemohr.org/%7Eircjunk/not_public_dont_open/tom/p1090635.jpg
12:19 AM Tom_L: i redesigned that part
12:19 AM Tom_L: but it hasn't been tested yet
12:20 AM rue_: in the meantime, I'v removed the front tabs and thickened the neck, we dont have any of those out there long though to know if it'll make a difference
12:20 AM rue_: I have to make a new A7
12:20 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/Extra/A9_can_grip.jpg
12:21 AM rue_: ? you ok? your leaking urls
12:21 AM Tom_L: that's 1/4" instead of 1/8" alum on the arm
12:21 AM rue_: kat ^ his is 1/4"
12:21 AM ^kat^: it's pretty too, but it will lose points of grip if they use a can with a smaller neck
12:22 AM rue_: Tom_L, another thing were playing with, is leaving a 'tooth', a spot not routed out in the ledge, narrow, to bite into the can and 'lock' it
12:22 AM ^kat^: and the gripepr that closes will be sprung if they use a can with a fatter neck
12:22 AM rue_: part of what I dont know is that neck tolerance
12:22 AM rue_: it might only be +-1mm on dea
12:22 AM rue_: dia
12:23 AM ^kat^: and i am trying to suggest you don;t grip what you cannot measure , see, or handle
12:23 AM rue_: your right
12:23 AM Tom_L: gnite
12:23 AM rue_: but I'm also being pushed by them to keep that the same, but make it work
12:23 AM rue_: which, is contradictory
12:24 AM rue_: unless there is a design that can provide a wider tolerance
12:24 AM rue_: gnight tom
12:24 AM ^kat^: Tom, can you make that http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/Extra/A9_can_grip.jpg more likea V instead of a smoothly curving swooping?
12:24 AM Tom_L: then you work within given parameters and make it work
12:24 AM Tom_L: i can cad just about anything
12:24 AM ^kat^: your swooping grips a given diameter very well, not so much for otehr sizes tho
12:24 AM rue_: kat, that profile needs to lock into the can, A10 just holds it against that
12:25 AM Tom_L: i didn't vary from the given design on that end
12:25 AM ^kat^: the V will always grip any diameter in two points
12:25 AM rue_: I should show you the varriations were dealing with
12:25 AM rue_: its a 3d grab kat
12:25 AM ^kat^: yeas
12:25 AM rue_: nothing holds the can in forward/back
12:25 AM * ^kat^ gives up
12:26 AM ^kat^: i can make one before i can talk you into it, i am sure
12:26 AM rue_: awe, I want to understand your point
12:26 AM rue_: oh, you mean instead of
12:26 AM rue_: L
12:26 AM rue_: >
12:26 AM rue_: on the routed section
12:27 AM rue_: sideways cross cut
12:27 AM ^kat^: same lip as Tom has now, same dimensions from lip to the top of the body, just make it a V instead of a swooping gracious curve
12:27 AM Tom_L: like a fork
12:27 AM ^kat^: you can do the same on the clamp, and presto, it grips the can of any neck in 4 points around the diameter
12:28 AM rue_: I can see that holding xy, but not either of the thetas
12:28 AM rue_: that front retainer is floppy tho
12:28 AM ^kat^: fork? a V is the same as a fork?
12:28 AM rue_: it only presses towards the handle
12:28 AM ^kat^: i can fix that too
12:29 AM rue_: not without making a custom link instead of just using a bike link :)
12:29 AM ^kat^: yeas actually
12:29 AM rue_: the origional guy used a custom made peiece
12:29 AM rue_: we cant add more time to building these
12:29 AM rue_: were almost at break-even now
12:30 AM rue_: thats why its a chain link now
12:30 AM ^kat^: on http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/Extra/A9_can_grip.jpg , put a set of tabs that the A10 lands in when closed on the neck
12:30 AM ^kat^: time is less of an issue with cnc, Tom can go eat dinner while the machine does the work, same time
12:30 AM rue_: I understand
12:31 AM ^kat^: the twin tabs added, with the A10 between, stabilised the A10 and keeps it in plane of the A9
12:31 AM rue_: OR, what if the grip was two pincers, sprung togethor
12:31 AM rue_: ()
12:31 AM ^kat^: add tabs to a10, lengthen A9
12:32 AM ^kat^: fine with me
12:32 AM rue_: it was another thought I had
12:32 AM ^kat^: you didn;t wana complete redesign tho
12:32 AM rue_: it keeps going back to that tho
12:32 AM rue_: part of the contradiction
12:32 AM ^kat^: one side being fixed is somewhat of a plus
12:32 AM rue_: indeed
12:33 AM rue_: hows the bender!
12:33 AM ^kat^: if you go with () , fix one side, put the stabilising tabs on the tube (base of what was A10), add a longer spring to a cable inside the tube to pull A9
12:34 AM ^kat^: did not work on it today or yesterday, got good weather to be outside
12:34 AM rue_: no tube inside on 6" or 3" model
12:34 AM ^kat^: EMT has inside
12:34 AM rue_: no, there is no space
12:34 AM rue_: its full of handle and stuff
12:35 AM ^kat^: lay it bside, eitehr way, it longer, can stretch more, and be stronger, and be out of the way
12:35 AM rue_: http://www.ruemohr.org/p1090700.jpg
12:35 AM rue_: the 6" model has the same amount of inside space that one does
12:36 AM ^kat^: k
12:36 AM rue_: like you say, spring, just,... cant be on inside
12:37 AM rue_: they say they can change the paint can one-handed with those
12:37 AM rue_: I'd like to see that, cause I cant invision it
12:38 AM ^kat^: i can, one on grip, lay end on can, fold the spring over
12:38 AM rue_: the origional 3" had a trigger the whole length of the handle, were not sure how that worked either, no way to hold it and pull the trigger without crushing a finger
12:39 AM ^kat^: what i cannot see is the can not being held at an angle for paining vertical surfaces overhead
12:39 AM rue_: its not
12:39 AM rue_: its for painting logs
12:39 AM ^kat^: o
12:39 AM rue_: straight out and down
12:39 AM ^kat^: o
12:39 AM rue_: they get them up to about 24" long
12:39 AM rue_: do they dont have to reach
12:40 AM rue_: logs are put in piles, they grade them and leave paint marks
12:40 AM ^kat^: yeas
12:40 AM rue_: apparently they carry two, a 6" and a longer one
12:40 AM rue_: (longer seems to be 12" to 24")
12:41 AM rue_: yes, the harware store sells sprayer handles, but they tend to break on first use
12:42 AM ^kat^: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Aerosol-Spray-Can-Gun-Handle-Trigger-Grip-holder-paint-lubricant/271647361668
12:42 AM rue_: yea those
12:42 AM ^kat^: not my first choice
12:42 AM rue_: you have a 10% chance of it breaking the first time you try to clip it to a can
12:42 AM rue_: er sorry
12:43 AM rue_: you have a 90% chance of it breaking the first time you try to clip it to a can
12:43 AM rue_: 10% chance it wont
12:43 AM * ^kat^ agrees
12:43 AM rue_: geez, its not even a real photo
12:43 AM rue_: I think..... I think that graphic was made in ms paint...
12:44 AM rue_: I bought one
12:44 AM rue_: looks just like that
12:45 AM ^kat^: talk Tom into making two of that swoopy design with the lip, but in a V , and use that as A9 and A10, add tabs to one or the other to fit into the other, and a different spring
12:45 AM rue_: the difference between the size of our grip and that one is fractions of a mm
12:45 AM rue_: I can try things here in the 1/8"
12:46 AM ^kat^: idea: can you attach some 1/16 steel to the underside of aluminum, so the steel forms the lip?
12:46 AM rue_: maybe
12:46 AM rue_: I cant shape the steel tho
12:47 AM ^kat^: it's a V, you can shape it with a jigsaw
12:47 AM rue_: time $
12:47 AM ^kat^: or an abrasive sisk
12:47 AM ^kat^: disk
12:47 AM ^kat^: ok
12:47 AM rue_: I know
12:47 AM rue_: $20/hr
12:48 AM rue_: its most of the cost of them
12:48 AM rue_: they take 3-4.5 hrs ea to make, or hand work
12:48 AM rue_: and thats in batch
12:49 AM rue_: of hand work
12:49 AM ^kat^: i would force them into useing a can-body grip, saying that gripping only the neck is a safet issue
12:49 AM rue_: the other guys tried that
12:49 AM ^kat^: the can-body grip would save most the problems you are having
12:49 AM rue_: they came up with a realy nice simple design, totally rejected
12:50 AM ^kat^: for the same price?
12:50 AM rue_: AND the guy who came up with it was related to one of the managers
12:50 AM rue_: no, they wanted more
12:50 AM rue_: $20 isn't awesome here
12:50 AM ^kat^: the ya go, $250 is already too much
12:51 AM rue_: they are just barely ok with the $120 now
12:51 AM rue_: the old guy who was making them, was charging $60/$80 ea
12:51 AM rue_: we have NO IDEA how
12:51 AM rue_: we think it was just a hobby
12:51 AM rue_: he was retired
12:52 AM * ^kat^ nods
12:52 AM rue_: from what I can tell, he was a woodworker by trade
12:52 AM rue_: I think he had a router pentagraph he used with jigs to make lots of the parts
12:53 AM rue_: he wasn't good at metalergy, that I can tell
12:53 AM * ^kat^ nods
12:54 AM rue_: hmm, icecream for supper kat?
12:54 AM ^kat^: please
12:54 AM ^kat^: lasagna for desert?
12:54 AM * rue_ gets kat a large bowl of icecream
12:54 AM rue_: !?!... sure...
12:55 AM * ^kat^ gets it fromt eh freezer
12:55 AM rue_: I wonder if a person could make spagetti lasagna
12:55 AM rue_: pasta, cheese, sauce...
12:55 AM ^kat^: might taset a lot different, depending n the spices used
12:56 AM rue_: and bake, right?
12:56 AM ^kat^: meats
12:56 AM rue_: pasta, cheese, sauce...wieners...
12:56 AM rue_: ?
12:56 AM ^kat^: sasuage vs hamburger is the usual question
12:56 AM ^kat^: sliced seasoned ham, maybe
12:56 AM rue_: well, I got wieners
12:57 AM ^kat^: ok
12:57 AM * rue_ looks down, hmm
12:57 AM rue_: anyhow, I'm gonna brb, your headed to bed soon/
12:57 AM rue_: ?
12:58 AM ^kat^: i hope i can sleep, yeas
12:58 AM rue_: hmm, I just got an idea,
12:58 AM rue_: prolly not get much sleep tonight
01:00 AM ^kat^: there a side dish made by Knorr, used thin flat noodles, i prefer to add an equal amount of miniature seashell pasta to it, and pepper and some other spice to tatse
01:00 AM ^kat^: onions would work in this case also
01:03 AM * rue_ gets back from the kitchen with a bowl of icecream
01:03 AM ^kat^: <perk>
01:03 AM rue_: you know, if I ddidn't know better, I'd say something went wrong with a plan I just had there
01:04 AM ^kat^: me too, where is *your* bowl of icecream ?
01:04 AM rue_: I'm supposed to have spagetti
01:04 AM rue_: should I go back?
01:04 AM ^kat^: no, i can share
01:05 AM * ^kat^ sticks her nose in the bowl and begins licking the ice cream
01:05 AM rue_: no, you should have it, I already had some today
01:05 AM rue_: mind yourself, those flakes are dark chocolate
01:06 AM rue_: so, I got some magnetic hall switches
01:06 AM ^kat^: <cough>
01:06 AM rue_: apparently for a rotary encoder
01:06 AM rue_: but, the encoder was supposed to be optical
01:06 AM rue_: so, wtf
01:07 AM ^kat^: yea, that's going to be a difficult substitution
01:07 AM ^kat^: "shine the magnet in here....."
01:08 AM rue_: I dont imagine they will pick up well on my printed disc
01:08 AM rue_: I was just thinking that it would be an idea to make a stator like an alternator has, but with a permantent magnet
01:09 AM rue_: get a bunch of poles
01:09 AM rue_: if so, it sure would have been a good idea to have bought some donut magnets
01:09 AM ^kat^: oh, embed 1x2mm magnets in it
01:09 AM rue_: ------o-----
01:09 AM ^kat^: hall effects are pretty nsensitive
01:10 AM rue_: and put two interlocking steel crowns
01:10 AM ^kat^: -o------o-
01:10 AM rue_: my ---- was the shaft
01:11 AM ^kat^: o
01:11 AM ^kat^: use the rotor from a stepper?
01:11 AM rue_: geez, can everything be interpreted in a dirty way, srry
01:11 AM rue_: kinda yea
01:11 AM rue_: you know how the core of an alternator goes?
01:11 AM ^kat^: well, a stepper rotor is smaller and already built
01:11 AM rue_: with the two crowns?
01:11 AM ^kat^: yeas
01:11 AM rue_: yes
01:11 AM rue_: ah, wait
01:12 AM rue_: yes, I ahve some useless small steppers I could use for parts
01:12 AM rue_: I have a box already
01:13 AM rue_: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/images/pi/IMG06Mar2018_160111.jpg
01:13 AM rue_: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/images/pi/IMG06Mar2018_160138.jpg
01:13 AM rue_: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/images/pi/IMG06Mar2018_160754.jpg
01:13 AM rue_: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/images/pi/IMG06Mar2018_160830.jpg
01:14 AM * rue_ peers into the bowl, 'any icecream left?'
01:14 AM ^kat^: that faintly remembers me of a distributor rotor ("button")
01:15 AM ^kat^: yeas
01:15 AM rue_: kat, can you improve on your stay-awake reciepie of vit Bcomplex and asprin?
01:15 AM rue_: kat, yea those too!
01:15 AM rue_: sometimes that works to keep me awake
01:16 AM ^kat^: caffine and adrafinal
01:16 AM rue_: ad...ra.... ?
01:16 AM rue_: red rose tea?
01:16 AM ^kat^: some cold medicines with certain drugs used to make speed, are reported to meks some people jittery
01:17 AM rue_: oh I dont need the nerve in my leg gettin all excited
01:17 AM * rue_ ties to not show fear while trying to take the bowl back...
01:18 AM * ^kat^ stops growling outloud
01:21 AM rue_: ok, I started some spegetti
01:21 AM rue_: 8 min countdown
01:21 AM rue_: ooh kat
01:21 AM rue_: that 3w amp
01:21 AM ^kat^: ooh rue
01:21 AM rue_: its abs max v is 6
01:21 AM ^kat^: yeas?
01:21 AM rue_: typ 5V
01:21 AM ^kat^: i expected maybe 10v
01:21 AM rue_: so, requires 4 ohms speaker
01:22 AM rue_: aka, not headphones
01:22 AM rue_: unless I find a transformer
01:22 AM rue_: so, ~
01:22 AM ^kat^: drive a tiny 7-transistor output transformer backwards
01:22 AM rue_: I got 10 of them for like $1
01:22 AM rue_: they were ?:8R
01:23 AM rue_: not 600R:8R was it?
01:23 AM ^kat^: yeas
01:23 AM rue_: oh
01:23 AM rue_: :) hah
01:23 AM rue_: my history is better than I thought
01:23 AM ^kat^: or, use the 3w like an opamp in a more powerful design involving 19v laptop bricks
01:24 AM rue_: its a 250Khz class D
01:24 AM rue_: you know
01:24 AM ^kat^: not my problem
01:24 AM rue_: 3W x2 is prolly a dangerous power level for headphones
01:25 AM ^kat^: i once had electrostatic headphones, had transformers
01:25 AM rue_: maaaaybe it would be enough as-is
01:25 AM rue_: yea
01:25 AM rue_: did the highs sound good?
01:25 AM rue_: "once had" what happened?
01:26 AM ^kat^: my mom gave them away along with the Eico st70, a Sony reverb, electric car motor, and other things i was storing out back of her house with her permission
01:26 AM rue_: oh :(
01:27 AM rue_: I'v learned I have to keep my stuff in sight
01:27 AM rue_: ma ditched ALL my summer shirts
01:28 AM rue_: I was sorting them in my spare bedroom
01:28 AM rue_: yea
01:28 AM ^kat^: :-/
01:28 AM rue_: its not a freq habbit she has
01:29 AM rue_: I never get marked up shirts
01:29 AM ^kat^: my mom is not welcome here, period
01:29 AM rue_: in the set she got rid of the marked up shirt i got in australlia
01:29 AM ^kat^: :-((
01:32 AM rue_: waiiiit I didn't check the mail today
01:32 AM rue_: arg
01:32 AM ^kat^: send the robot
01:33 AM * ^kat^ easts some more drugs because her feets hurt
01:41 AM rue_: I got it
01:41 AM rue_: no pants, but its night
01:42 AM ^kat^: yea,, guys here will answer the door with no clothes on, i don;t go visting *anyone* any more
01:42 AM rue_: my father used to do that
01:43 AM rue_: it discourages johovo whitnesses
01:43 AM ^kat^: i am not a witness
01:44 AM * ^kat^ waves gnites
01:44 AM rue_: awe
01:45 AM ^kat^: i hope
08:15 PM rue_bed: dump
08:15 PM rue_bed: metal
08:15 PM rue_bed: cory
08:15 PM rue_bed: milk
08:15 PM rue_bed: charger board
09:52 PM Tom_L: ok
11:02 PM katsmeow: <coff>
11:06 PM rue_shop3: hi
11:06 PM rue_shop3: it was a total zoo here today
11:07 PM rue_shop3: 2 kids, 3 other visiotrs
11:07 PM rue_shop3: and guess who's help everyone needed?

11:32 PM rue_: I wonder if I can get an stm32 to dhcp a network address
11:33 PM katsmeow: i suspect you can
11:33 PM katsmeow: baby avr have done it
11:33 PM katsmeow: people have put commodore 64 online
11:33 PM rue_: me and a chap were talking about a tool
11:34 PM rue_: you plug it into a network, it tells you if its an active jack (has link)
11:34 PM rue_: it tries to get a dhcp address and tells you the address if it can
11:34 PM rue_: tries to ping google, tells you if it can
11:34 PM katsmeow: may be a diferent addy each time you plug it in tho
11:34 PM rue_: does not matter
11:35 PM rue_: the idea is that its a diag tool for networks
11:35 PM rue_: times when you just need to know if a jack in a wall is active, and if it can route to the internet
11:35 PM katsmeow: i was just meaning the address may not be valuable enough for it to tell you
11:35 PM rue_: it gives you an idea of the subnet
11:35 PM katsmeow: k
11:35 PM rue_: aka 192.168.8.1
11:36 PM rue_: opposed to 10.10.6.8
11:36 PM rue_: or 172.---
11:37 PM katsmeow: yeas, i put Tiggr on the lan hardcoded to 10.x.x.x , turns out the vpn demanded that whole range too
11:37 PM rue_: its nice when people plug in a router somewhere on the network to split a connection, and its issueing dhcp addresses and advertizign itself as a defualt route, but cant go anywhere
