10:04 PM rue_shop3: HALP
10:07 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Mill_base2.jpg
10:07 PM Tom_L: i think i like the channel better
10:07 PM rue_mohr: rue_shop3, what you barking about?
10:07 PM Tom_L: i think everything but the motor is the wrong size
10:07 PM Tom_L: do you know what mill that is?
10:08 PM Tom_L: and btw...
10:08 PM Tom_L: why is everybody's junk so neat but ours?
10:09 PM rue_mohr: cayse they dont do anything with it
10:09 PM rue_mohr: they just have it
10:09 PM rue_mohr: if they used it EVER it'd be covered in chips
10:09 PM rue_mohr: its a taig
10:09 PM Tom_L: i wondered
10:10 PM rue_mohr: taig seems to be a step or two over sherline
10:10 PM rue_mohr: but at 1/5 the cost
10:10 PM Tom_L: i threw ^^ that together this evening
10:10 PM Tom_L: huh
10:10 PM Tom_L: at least it's steel
10:10 PM rue_mohr: $1200 for a mill, $2600 for the cnc package
10:10 PM rue_mohr: oooo hey
10:10 PM rue_mohr: yer stealing my ideas
10:10 PM Tom_L: how so?
10:11 PM rue_mohr: wellt eh base
10:11 PM Tom_L: put .750 risers on all the rails
10:11 PM rue_mohr: and then you went and hid your steal idea by using U for the up righ t insteaf of the ibeam
10:11 PM Tom_L: and i'll make a shim for the nut holder to table
10:11 PM rue_mohr: hmm
10:12 PM Tom_L: it took me a while to find the C channel cad parts
10:12 PM rue_mohr: I have like 10 or 12 feet of that channel
10:12 PM Tom_L: that were accurate
10:12 PM Tom_L: bring me half of it
10:12 PM rue_mohr: hah
10:12 PM rue_mohr: trade ya, its galvanized
10:12 PM Tom_L: one is 10" the other is 6
10:12 PM Tom_L: naw
10:12 PM Tom_L: no fun to weld
10:13 PM rue_mohr: big channel so of course its THICK too
10:13 PM rue_mohr: (the galvanization)
10:13 PM Tom_L: i was surprised how many different variations there were actually
10:13 PM Tom_L: 10" had several
10:13 PM rue_mohr: should I go measure mine?
10:13 PM Tom_L: different thicknesses and rail length
10:13 PM Tom_L: measure the legs on it
10:13 PM Tom_L: and the thickness in the middle
10:14 PM Tom_L: i went with 2.6" legs on the 10"
10:14 PM Tom_L: i'll see what the scrap has then mod the model once i have a hunk
10:15 PM Tom_L: that's 24" x 18" btw
10:15 PM Tom_L: i think i'll mount the motors on the back of the plate if they'll fit
10:16 PM Tom_L: set the base on some standoffs so it will fit under it
10:16 PM rue_mohr: 2x7 , 1/4"
10:16 PM Tom_L: and use pulleys
10:16 PM Tom_L: or is that a bad idea?
10:16 PM rue_mohr: soudns good to me
10:17 PM Tom_L: i'll find a nema23 model and see what it looks like
10:32 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Mill_base2_motors1.jpg
10:32 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Mill_base2_motors2.jpg
10:32 PM Tom_L: needs a mount of course but i think they will fit ok
10:38 PM rue_mohr: looks good
10:39 PM rue_mohr: I'm trying tot hink how to cut the box ways
10:39 PM rue_mohr: I might have a slotting cutter for the milling machine
10:39 PM rue_mohr: if so, I can use it to undercut some welded bits
10:41 PM Tom_L: the guys over there think the square tube would be stronger
10:41 PM rue_mohr: hmm
10:41 PM rue_mohr: Id ont see it
10:42 PM rue_mohr: I can see arguments about how the upright is attached
10:42 PM Tom_L: yeah
10:42 PM Tom_L: they say bolt it and add an adjustable support behind it
10:42 PM rue_mohr: which could be dealt with by having a peice of plate under it
10:44 PM Tom_L: if it were bolted i think it could be tweaked enough to get it square and plum
10:44 PM rue_mohr: my approach is to make it strong and deal with straight and plum via other means
10:44 PM rue_mohr: question
10:45 PM rue_mohr: are the sliders for z better put on the sides of the upright or the front like that
10:45 PM rue_mohr: I'd imagine the "pull" specs are worse than the "twist"
10:46 PM rue_mohr: esp cause the twist manifests via side force
10:47 PM rue_mohr: putting them on the side also allows you to preload them
10:47 PM Tom_L: <hazzy> Tom_L: just did a back of the envelope calc to compare C channel to HSS both 6" x 3" x .375" the HSS is about 15 times as stiff !!!
10:50 PM rue_mohr: hss is square tube?
10:50 PM rue_mohr: prolly cause of the extra ribs, and the closed nature
10:51 PM rue_mohr: huh
10:51 PM Tom_L: <hazzy> I ran the calc for 6" X 3" tube, which would be a about like your three 2X2 tubes, so yes
10:51 PM Tom_L: i can see that
10:51 PM Tom_L: especially if 2 were butted and welded together
10:52 PM Tom_L: that would give it one huge rib in the middle
10:52 PM rue_mohr: so, how much is enough?
10:53 PM rue_mohr: the other + with tube, is filling it with concrete
10:53 PM rue_mohr: takes out any resonace
10:53 PM rue_mohr: resonance
10:54 PM Tom_L: meh, i want it to sing to me :)
11:31 PM Tom_L: lots to think about now
11:40 PM rue_mohr: yea
11:40 PM rue_mohr: I dont what I want to use for what
11:41 PM Tom_L: scribble on paper before welding
11:41 PM Tom_L: :)
11:41 PM rue_mohr: for what its worth, I could use a transmisison for an upright and have slidesr between a plate at the top and bottom
11:41 PM rue_mohr: I do, it helps make the dimentions come out coose
11:41 PM rue_mohr: close
11:42 PM rue_mohr: not that it worked for the last cnc I made
11:42 PM rue_mohr: or that mecha art thing
11:54 PM Tom_L: gnite
11:54 PM rue_mohr: gnight
