04:33 PM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
08:40 PM Tom_L: rue_mohr, what size rectangle tube did you use on your mill?
11:39 PM rue_mohr: hmm, its 1.25 or 1.5
11:40 PM rue_mohr: er, the uprights?
11:40 PM rue_mohr: or the base?
11:40 PM Tom_L: yeah
11:40 PM Tom_L: i know i'll never get a chance to but i'd like to make one
11:40 PM Tom_L: but i don't want a gantry style
11:41 PM Tom_L: rather like a bridgeport with the head above the x y axis
11:41 PM rue_shop3: base 1.23" uprights are 1.5x2.5
11:41 PM rue_shop3: I'm REALLY itching to make a new one
11:41 PM Tom_L: let's design one in cad
11:41 PM rue_shop3: I have that I beam for an upright and a big mean metal plate for a base
11:41 PM rue_shop3: hell no
11:42 PM rue_shop3: I'd never finish it, I have to ad-hock it
11:42 PM Tom_L: what's wrong with that one?
11:42 PM Tom_L: that you want to make another one
11:42 PM rue_mohr: I want to make one upright style like the sherline, just sturdier
11:43 PM Tom_L: same here
11:43 PM rue_mohr: I actually have a HUGE peice of like 8" channel iron too
11:43 PM Tom_L: a rigid 'neck' with the z on it
11:43 PM rue_mohr: (10' I think)
11:43 PM rue_mohr: yea, I was playing with the idea of casting the main frame in concrete
11:43 PM Tom_L: i was thinking of backing the upright with a piece of flat iron
11:43 PM rue_mohr: but I backed down
11:43 PM Tom_L: or like an I beam type support
11:44 PM rue_mohr: I have some like 4x6" I beam
11:44 PM Tom_L: i can get some from the scrap yard i'm fairly certain
11:44 PM rue_mohr: slider$ are my main problem
11:44 PM Tom_L: yeah, i've been looking at those rails
11:44 PM Tom_L: i doubt i get em
11:44 PM Tom_L: but they would be smooth and rigid
11:45 PM rue_mohr: but again, I find myself repeatedly talking myself off a ledge
11:45 PM Tom_L: https://www.ebay.com/itm/US-Stock-3Set-Ballscrew-1605-400-700-1000-Square-Linear-guide-rail-BKBF-Nut-CNC/112600628788?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649
11:45 PM Tom_L: those are 16mm screws
11:46 PM rue_mohr: my goal is smaller bits, so, high rpm and fradgile bits, so, not a lot of force required
11:46 PM rue_mohr: ball screws are good
11:46 PM Tom_L: those are cheap ball screws though
11:46 PM rue_mohr: I think I'v mastered threaded rod
11:46 PM Tom_L: not high quality
11:46 PM rue_mohr: but its still got lots of friction
11:46 PM Tom_L: they're rolled not ground
11:47 PM Tom_L: i just can't do much with the sherline except experiment with the software
11:47 PM rue_mohr: I cant blieve they got away with the way they did the vert on the sherline
11:47 PM Tom_L: mine is worse than the stock one for the Z
11:48 PM Tom_L: for being rigid
11:48 PM Tom_L: but i have more travel
11:48 PM rue_mohr: !! I ALSO have a MILL, and I got a dovetail bit, so I been thinking of making some dovetail sliders
11:48 PM Tom_L: and that's why i went with it in the first place
11:48 PM Tom_L: a good mill?
11:48 PM rue_mohr: the sherline I have is borrowed from armyofevilrobots
11:48 PM Tom_L: i know
11:48 PM rue_mohr: its a OLD busybee millpress
11:49 PM rue_mohr: did I show you the pic?
11:49 PM Tom_L: i dunno
11:49 PM Tom_L: don't remember
11:49 PM Tom_L: i may try to save for those rails but i doubt i ever get em
11:49 PM rue_mohr: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/mSJ7g91--Ak/hqdefault.jpg
11:49 PM rue_mohr: its like that
11:49 PM Tom_L: yeah
11:49 PM rue_mohr: its more beat up than is it worn out, I think its hardly got any hours
11:50 PM Tom_L: i don't like the round column on them
11:50 PM rue_mohr: runs like a sewing machine, smooth as can be
11:50 PM Tom_L: nice
11:50 PM rue_mohr: (less I had to replace all the bearings cause shavings got into the old ones)
11:50 PM Tom_L: 2mt on the head?
11:50 PM rue_mohr: oo dont remember
11:50 PM rue_mohr: its not here, dont have room for it
11:51 PM Tom_L: i try doing some stuff on the drill press but the cutters keep coming out because the MT2 is not made for side loads
11:51 PM rue_mohr: I'd like to find some old book on how to make dovetail sliders, there's a trick I'm not 100% sure of
11:51 PM Tom_L: like what?
11:51 PM rue_mohr: yea, my chuck will come out if you even blow sideways on it
11:51 PM Tom_L: 60 deg
11:51 PM rue_mohr: no, the jib has a trick
11:52 PM Tom_L: i bet it's MT2 then
11:52 PM Tom_L: just a parallel bronze bar you tighten with setscrews from the outside
11:52 PM rue_mohr: I think you make one side not parallel, and then cut a matching jib
11:52 PM rue_mohr: oh
11:52 PM rue_mohr: hmm
11:53 PM Tom_L: or such
11:53 PM rue_mohr: brass keyway
11:53 PM Tom_L: box ways are stronger
11:53 PM Tom_L: that's why i'm leaning toward the rails
11:53 PM rue_mohr: rlly??
11:53 PM Tom_L: absolutely
11:53 PM rue_mohr: [=] ?
11:53 PM Tom_L: all the good big mills have box ways
11:53 PM rue_mohr: 8-|
11:54 PM rue_mohr: well thats easier to make
11:55 PM rue_mohr: I wonder if I can do it with cast pewter
11:55 PM Tom_L: |-----|

11:56 PM Tom_L: all the big ones that cut heavy steel are like that
11:56 PM rue_mohr: well damn
11:57 PM rue_mohr: I never even heard the term before
11:57 PM rue_mohr: ok
11:57 PM Tom_L: i was gonna attach the screw to the table on X and have the nut attached to Y
11:57 PM Tom_L: yeah, you're better off with that design
11:58 PM rue_mohr: :) thanks
11:59 PM rue_mohr: so, I dont ad-hock everything
11:59 PM Tom_L: easier to build too probably
11:59 PM rue_mohr: what size you aiming for?
11:59 PM Tom_L: size of what?
11:59 PM rue_mohr: working area
11:59 PM Tom_L: bigger than the sherline
11:59 PM rue_mohr: 4"x10"x4"?
11:59 PM Tom_L: and i have 7 x 9 on it
11:59 PM Tom_L: more than that
11:59 PM rue_mohr: k
