12:07 PM rue_bed2: the barrel/drum burners do not implement the elements that would makethat J one so efficient
12:20 PM jym: I did the same thing at that one I linked to, just used a barrel instead of whatever thing he used.
12:20 PM jym: looks like an old water heater modiefed
12:32 PM jym: rue_bed2: But unless i did something TOTALLY wrong, my pre-test (before sealing up everything and pre insulation of the inner J tube), it really didn't perform all that well, only got u to 315F max.
12:33 PM jym: rue_bed2: I think at this point I'm going to look at a barrel stove. I can get used food grade barrels for $5/ea. Issue now (again) is fluepipe thru the wall, or roof, but I'm REALLY reluctant to to cut a hole in the roof.
12:34 PM rue_bed2: you have to go by the exhaust temp tho
12:34 PM rue_bed2: if you have a hot fire burning, and hte exhause temp is just 5
12:34 PM jym: the exhaust was 75F
12:34 PM rue_bed2: c over abmient, your good
12:35 PM jym: outdoor ambient was 32F
12:36 PM rue_bed2: so the talk should have been dissipating a good amount of watts, note that it wouldn't end up particlarily hot
12:36 PM rue_bed2: just lots of watts
12:36 PM rue_bed2: casue its spread over such a large surface
12:37 PM rue_bed2: a small fire (8" dia even) can generate over 10kbtu/hr if drafted right
12:37 PM jym: Right, but the "rocket effect" was only sporatic, nothing consistant
12:37 PM rue_bed2: you had the upright insulated?
12:37 PM jym: I used 3" exhaust pipe for the J tube
12:37 PM jym: No, this was all a pre-test, before insuating
12:37 PM rue_bed2: you have to insulate that for it to work right
12:38 PM jym: I just wante dto get an idea befor eputting in the extra effort
12:38 PM rue_bed2: otherwise it wuold have a hard time maintaining the draft
12:38 PM rue_bed2: 3" burn, how big was the tank?
12:38 PM jym: Well it's 37F right now, at least warm enough outside that I can add the insulation and test today.
12:38 PM jym: tank?
12:38 PM rue_bed2: the other thing t make sure of is that the tank was big enough to cool the exhaust fast enough
12:39 PM rue_bed2: the tank around the J
12:39 PM jym: hang on, I'll post pics...
12:40 PM jym: Oh, the 3" j tube will have a 5" duct and I'll fill it with perlite. So that's one inch of insulation
12:41 PM rue_bed2: and a tank of 18 or 24" dia around it?
12:44 PM jym: rue_bed2: http://imgur.com/a/HZj8x
12:45 PM jym: 24"x26" barrel, 3" exhaust pipe,
12:45 PM jym: 24"x36" barrel*
12:46 PM jym: apx 1.5" away from the "top" inside of the barrel, but I can cut that as needed
12:48 PM jym: I'm still looking for 4" square tubing, in the meantime I made packets of pellets wrapped in newspaper like a cigar, and shoved into the burn chamber opening.
12:48 PM jym: and lit with a torch.
01:16 PM rue_house: that should behave
01:25 PM jym: rue_bed2: do you think 1.5" from the "top" of the inside of the barrel is enough room, or should I cut it down half an inch?
01:25 PM jym: I used a 2x4 as a spacer when I welded in the exhaust pipe J tube
01:26 PM jym: just like the guy showed form what I could make out in his photos that is.
02:20 PM jym: SOB, the 7" galv duct I was going to use has a fucking coated liner on the inside I now have to burn off. It can never be a simple ONE step process, always 3-5 steps before the step you need to get done.
04:52 PM jym: ...and it's snowing *heavy sigh*
04:59 PM Tom_itx: ok this sucks
04:59 PM Tom_itx: got a chinglish lpt card with drivers but no directions
05:00 PM Tom_itx: i got it working in windows
05:00 PM Tom_itx: got it recognized in dos
05:00 PM Tom_itx: but how can i find what port it's on?
05:00 PM Tom_itx: can't figure out where it is
05:02 PM Tom_itx: trying to remember all the dos tricks....
05:02 PM Tom_itx: debug 00:40 and only see 2 com ports and 1 lpt
05:03 PM Tom_itx: 02F8 03F8 and 0378 for the LPT
05:03 PM Tom_itx: ^^ serial
05:05 PM Tom_itx: ahh maybe that's it... -r remap to legacy port
05:21 PM Tom_itx: nope
05:21 PM Tom_itx: no fix
05:51 PM jym: what os?
05:54 PM jym: Tom_itx: what os?
05:54 PM jym: Tom_itx: Also check 03BC
05:55 PM Tom_itx: os is listed
05:55 PM Tom_itx: DOS
05:56 PM Tom_itx: the issue is the card maps to E000 and is remapped to 0278 but the software can't see that
05:56 PM Tom_itx: since it's not running a .sys driver file
05:57 PM Tom_itx: beginning to think there's no solution
06:03 PM Tom_L: http://www.drivers-download.com/en/downloadlist.php?id=166
06:03 PM Tom_itx: that's the drivers for the chip
06:03 PM Tom_itx: WCH CH351Q
07:07 PM jym: Tom_itx: pci card?
07:11 PM jym: Tom_itx: PCI paraport cards don't map to the old-skool base addresses, the get remapped really high Exxx or so
07:12 PM jym: Tom_itx: also, check bios settings
07:12 PM jym: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Serial-HOWTO-8.html
07:37 PM Tom_itx: no bios settings for the ports
07:39 PM Tom_itx: works fine in win 7.. just tried it
07:39 PM Tom_itx: no dos support as of yet
09:01 PM jym: Tom_itx: https://www.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/Parallel/1-Port-PCI-Parallel-Adapter-Card~PCI1P2
09:03 PM jym: Tom_itx: Where did you get this card that said is supported DOS ?
09:04 PM jym: Tom_itx: http://www.sunix.com.tw/product/par5008a.html
09:05 PM jym: Tom_itx: " * LPT port does not support legacy 278/378 ISA address under Windows nor Linux operation systems, but only DOS mode."
09:08 PM jym: rue_house: Took all day to install the insulation. It was slightly better, but not all that much, got up to 490F. Weather permitting, I'll try one more thing tomorrow. If that doens't work, yeah, let's not go there.
10:40 PM Tom_itx: jym they're all over ebay
10:41 PM Tom_itx: http://www.ebay.com/itm/DB25-One-Parallel-Port-LPT-Printer-to-PCI-Card-Converter-Adapter-For-Win7/331529633103?_trksid=p2060778.c100290.m3507&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D40954%26meid%3Dec64b07ab5414687948c1e92c4f559fa%26pid%3D100290%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26sd%3D331529633103
10:42 PM Tom_itx: i wonder if i poke the default lpt2 address with their E000 maybe it would find it
10:42 PM Tom_itx: been too long since i did any sneaky stuff with dos
10:42 PM Tom_itx: may have to get some of my dos asm books back out and dust em off
10:44 PM Tom_itx: i may try poking that in the address and see
10:45 PM Tom_itx: once you decipher the chinglish i found the right stuff to make it work in windows
10:45 PM Tom_itx: the chip's not just a parport. i had to select a serial/parallel driver
10:49 PM jym: Tom_itx: Where did you get this card that said is supported DOS ?
10:54 PM Tom_itx: i just gave you the link
11:37 PM Tom_itx: ok found the address i need finally
11:37 PM Tom_itx: just don't know if it will work. have my doubts
