Back
[11:18:42] <Jymmm> I tossed a core on the stove and plumber it to the other one. it took HOURS for it to get any heat and I could still touch the core on the stove
[11:18:53] <Jymmm> plumbed*
[13:00:15] <rue_bed> yea
[13:00:30] <rue_bed> I'm using a flame tube boiler remember?
[13:10:19] <Jymmm> yeah, it was jsut a test since i had it
[13:10:26] <Jymmm> but hey, I have an idea....
[13:12:24] <rue_bed> you cant run cold water right against a fire, all you will get is carbon
[13:13:01] <rue_bed> you need to keep the fire side hot
[13:13:13] <rue_bed> insulator dosn't mean no power flow
[13:13:55] <Jymmm> I have some 55gal drums. and I was thinking of shoving that lil stove inside of it and then run 4" duct in a "U shape in/out of the garage inthru/aroudn the top of the stove with a lil 12v fan on one end blowing into the duct
[13:14:30] <Jymmm> http://www.sportsmansguide.com/product/index/hq-issue-outdoor-wood-stove?a=1884248
[13:14:34] <rue_bed> I see CO warnings
[13:14:56] <Jymmm> well, I'd tape up the sections
[13:15:02] <rue_bed> why did you buy a commercial stove if your not putting in in the house
[13:15:11] <rue_bed> oh, right, stove pipe
[13:15:20] <Jymmm> no, ducting
[13:15:36] <Jymmm> it would sit on top of the stove, but inside the barrel
[13:15:38] <rue_bed> no, stove pipe was too expensive for you to put in inside
[13:15:45] <rue_bed> aaah
[13:15:54] <Jymmm> the barrel is acting like a wind/rain/snow shield
[13:15:56] <rue_bed> still gonna be fractional heat gian
[13:16:22] <Jymmm> Oh I know, but I just can't get a shove pipe in the garage... not enugh clearances to be safe imo
[13:16:29] <Jymmm> stove*
[13:16:53] <rue_bed> I cant even suggest things at the rate your pan is changing
[13:16:53] <Jymmm> but, are we talking like 5% or like 60% ?
[13:17:18] <rue_bed> otherwise I'da shown you how to make an air/air you could have used on the chimney
[13:17:25] <Jymmm> I never shoved a duct on a heat source before
[13:17:26] <rue_bed> under 40%
[13:18:01] <rue_bed> how big is the stove?
[13:18:05] * rue_bed gets up
[13:18:29] <Jymmm> it'll slide into a 55gal drum with the legs
[13:18:45] <rue_house> how big is the stove?
[13:18:46] <Jymmm> Firebox Dimensions 11.75"w. x 16.25"d. x 10.75"h.
[13:18:59] <rue_house> *blikb*
[13:19:05] <rue_house> its a camping stove?
[13:19:11] <Jymmm> yeah
[13:19:34] <Jymmm> http://www.sportsmansguide.com/product/index/hq-issue-outdoor-wood-stove?a=1884248
[13:21:13] <Jymmm> I was thinking lay a 55gal drum on end, slide the stove into it, cut a hole to slip on the stove pipe, cut a sqaure of of the back end to slip the duct thru
[13:21:23] <Jymmm> on it's seide I mean
[13:21:28] <Jymmm> on it's side I mean
[13:22:14] <rue_house> geez, after all the high freq pwm I been doing, chopping a sine wave for dimming christmas lights would be a breeze
[13:22:28] <Jymmm> 12v lights?
[13:22:50] <Jymmm> oh sine wave, nm
[13:23:37] <Jymmm> so you think I have a half ass possibility that this would work?
[13:23:51] <Jymmm> or dont evne bother
[13:24:54] <Jymmm> I already have the stove and drum, just need to get a weed burner ro burn out the barrels and the duct work
[13:26:38] <rue_house> no 120V christmas lights
[13:27:10] <rue_house> can you weld?
[13:27:31] <Jymmm> poorly
[13:27:42] <Jymmm> need practice mostly
[13:28:15] <rue_house> k, put fins on it, and build a box from the front to just-not-including the chimney
[13:28:42] <rue_house> run the air thru that, you can use sheetmetal like the stuff hot water tanks are usually wrapped in (cuase the peice of sheet metal is stupid)
[13:29:20] <rue_house> OR
[13:29:48] <rue_house> insulate the HELL out of the firebox, and make a looooong chimney thats double wall with a heat exchanger
[13:30:00] <rue_house> OR
[13:30:10] <rue_house> there IS a air-air exchanger you can get wor woodstoves
[13:31:38] <rue_house> http://www.allselfsustained.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/41.jpg
[13:31:39] <rue_house> hehe
[13:31:46] <rue_house> or you can make your own... hehe
[13:33:04] <rue_house> hah, there are more diy models than commercial ones
[13:34:05] <rue_house> http://ls-stoves.com/files/simpleGallery/344/4_300x1000/20%20h.jpg
[13:36:31] <Jymmm> let me move some stuff around and take soem photos, maybe itll make better sense of what I have in mind
[13:47:51] <Jymmm> rue_house: Excuse the angel on the first pic, the stove DOES fit in the drum, and this is a open top drum so I can just remove it, or cut a square for the stove door http://imgur.com/a/fWnep
[13:48:17] <Jymmm> the round thing is a 5" duct just for visual
[13:52:29] <Jymmm> rue_house: I also found this high temp (600F) flue tape instead of the normal foil tape https://www.amazon.com/3M-High-Temperature-Flue-15-Foot/dp/B00004Z4DS
[13:54:59] <Jymmm> the drum won't be "sealed", but should act as an outter envelope for the stove and place the duct 'U' in thry the bottom (back) of the drum and around the stovepipe, then thru the back wall of the garage.
[14:01:10] <Jymmm> rue_house: Then some 5" duct in a long U shape http://www.homedepot.com/p/4-in-x-5-ft-Round-Metal-Duct-Pipe-CP4X60/100196725
[14:02:45] <Jymmm> rue_house: I really appreciate you input/feedback in this. I've been trying so hard and getting discouraged at all the damn failures/snafu's. I know it's not perfect but if I can get 40% into the garage I'd be in heaven.
[14:04:27] <Jymmm> and nothing catching on fire is always a good thing.
[14:08:05] <rue_house> indeed
[14:08:11] <rue_house> I have to hack togethor mine today
[14:23:03] <Jymmm> rue_house: Jan and it's down to the 20's so trying to get *something* going without killing me in propane/materials for something that is sub-optimal, and least for now.
[14:23:22] <Jymmm> rue_house: whats wrong with your system?
[14:23:25] <Tom_L> burn your chairs
[14:23:39] <Tom_L> then the trim
[14:23:43] <Tom_L> then the siding
[14:23:47] <Tom_L> ...
[14:23:55] <Jymmm> Tom_L: See 2nd pic, no need to burn the furniture... http://imgur.com/a/fWnep
[14:24:18] <Tom_L> i've seen your forest of a front yard if that's what it is
[14:24:36] <Jymmm> all that blue/silver is all sesoned wood tyvm
[15:09:31] <rue_house> yea, I'm gonna have a whole house to get rid of
[15:09:47] <rue_house> Jymmm, new firebox for the boiler
[15:09:57] <rue_house> old one is burned out, I have design improvements
[15:10:03] <rue_house> its not done, but its operable
[15:10:19] <rue_house> I have 100+gal of water I need to get from...
[15:10:28] <rue_house> 11c to 80c
[17:06:54] <rue_house> yay, boiler is going
[17:07:09] <rue_house> not running as hot as I'd like, whatever
[17:07:19] <rue_house> the choke setting is tricket
[17:07:20] <rue_house> y
[17:48:29] <rue_shop3> 51c
[17:48:48] <rue_shop3> collector taking on 7c
[17:58:31] <rue_shop3> its interesting to watch the temperature difference getting smaller but the energy levels staying the same
[18:00:55] <rue_shop3> exhaust holding at 175c
[18:31:26] <Tom_L> new boiler?
[19:50:57] <Tom_L> rue_shop3
[19:51:07] <Tom_L> how can i tell what debian ver i'm running?
[19:52:45] <Tom_L> if this is right, it's 2.6.26
[19:52:49] <Tom_L> crap that's old
[19:53:18] <Tom_L> i bet it'd screw everything up if i tried to upgrade
[19:54:14] <Jymmm> uname -a
[19:54:34] <Jymmm> rue_house: Ah ok
[19:55:45] <Jymmm> Burning out a barrel is not like in the movies... Toss in a hand full of twigs, rub your butt cheecks together and five minutes later... BAM! Shiny new barrel and a free cherry squish !
[19:56:03] <Jymmm> squishy
[19:56:21] <Tom_L> what's the latest debian?
[19:56:42] <Tom_L> i better leave it alone
[19:56:46] <Tom_L> it's working.
[19:57:15] <Tom_L> Jymmm, add more ether
[19:57:52] <Jymmm> Tom_L: Nah, I added a blower on a pipe, cause I started melting it before the pipe =)
[19:57:54] <Tom_L> we made tennis ball cannons with it
[19:59:24] <Tom_L> how's that stove connected to the barrel?
[19:59:31] <Tom_L> i couldn't tell from the pic
[19:59:40] <Tom_L> or was that a barrel conversion kit
[20:01:50] <Tom_L> how can i tell what size hdd is in the system?
[20:01:57] <Tom_L> ( i can't remember )
[20:02:28] <Jymmm> the stove will be IN the barrel,
[20:02:42] <Tom_L> huh??
[20:02:59] <Jymmm> the barrel is acting as a oven of sorts
[20:03:13] <Jymmm> and a wind/rain/snow shield too
[20:03:39] <Jymmm> the stove pipe comes off the stove,
[20:03:45] <Jymmm> insert stove into barrel
[20:03:57] <Jymmm> cut hole in barrel to insert stove pipe
[20:04:32] <Jymmm> cut big hole in end of barrel to fit TWO ducts (Well, one really long 'U' duct)
[20:04:56] <Jymmm> Cut hole in lid to fuel stove
[20:05:04] <Tom_L> what happened to the V8 stove idea?
[20:05:31] <Jymmm> This is srta it, but no stove pipe IN the garage
[20:05:34] <Jymmm> sorta*
[20:05:41] <Tom_L> outside??
[20:05:45] <Jymmm> yes
[20:05:54] <Tom_L> why you heatin the outside when you're inside??????
[20:06:10] <Jymmm> see 2nd pic http://imgur.com/a/fWnep
[20:06:19] <Jymmm> pretend the stove is IN the barrel
[20:06:46] * Tom_L gets out his GI-joe and ken to pretend
[20:07:22] <Tom_L> is that like a ship in a bottle?
[20:07:29] <Jymmm> in a way, yes
[20:07:47] <Tom_L> so what's the point?
[20:08:00] <Tom_L> blow the air from the barrel into the garage?
[20:08:09] <Tom_L> house / outhouse
[20:08:11] <Jymmm> the stove in the barrel will heat the duct work, and fed from/to the garage
[20:08:24] <Tom_L> you gonna insulate the barrel?
[20:08:41] <Jymmm> probably not
[20:08:45] <Tom_L> or fill it with salt
[20:08:47] <Jymmm> just insulate the duct work
[20:09:00] <Jymmm> that is exposed that is
[20:09:10] <Jymmm> no, no TES for now.
[20:09:55] <Jymmm> I dont have the clearances to have a firebox in the garage that I feel are safe.
[20:10:16] <Tom_L> is there a spark arrestor on the exhaust?
[20:10:16] <Jymmm> plus stove pipe is EXPENSIVE... 4ft = $135
[20:10:27] <Tom_L> don't set those pretty trees on fire to keep you warm
[20:10:34] <Tom_L> i know
[20:10:40] <Tom_L> insulated or triple wall?
[20:11:02] <Tom_L> make your own
[20:11:08] <Jymmm> just dbl wall, triple wall is even more
[20:11:11] <Tom_L> 2 pipes and fill with stuff
[20:11:14] <Jymmm> http://image.sportsmansguide.com/adimgs/l/6/648081i4_ts.jpg
[20:11:34] <Jymmm> I have some 1/8" wire mesh I'm going to toss in there as well
[20:11:39] <Tom_L> thick wall?
[20:11:54] <Jymmm> which?
[20:12:05] <Tom_L> the exhaust
[20:12:09] <Jymmm> oh yeah
[20:12:21] <Jymmm> very thick actually, was surprised.
[20:12:32] <Tom_L> probably .090
[20:12:40] <Jymmm> the whole thing is 50lbs
[20:12:56] <Jymmm> the stove pipes fit in the firebox for storage
[20:13:00] <Tom_L> rue would make it
[20:13:16] <Tom_L> 2 pipes, 6" and 8" and fill with firemortar stuff
[20:14:01] <Jymmm> firemortar is brittle and pricy.
[20:14:05] <Tom_L> that'd give you 1" of insul
[20:14:10] <Jymmm> perlite
[20:14:15] <Tom_L> use something else then
[20:14:25] <Jymmm> I already tried
[20:14:28] <Jymmm> perite
[20:14:43] <Jymmm> but flue gasses leaked and overheated the pipe some
[20:15:17] <Tom_L> i should upgrade my server but i'm afraid to
[20:15:24] <Jymmm> I gotta check the barrel...
[20:15:53] <Tom_L> until you've melted rock you're still in the safe zone
[20:34:56] <Jymmm> melting stove pipe is a big deal too =)
[21:07:01] <Tom_shop> rue_shop3, dammit! wake up...
[21:07:35] <Tom_shop> Jymmm, what linux do you run?
[21:08:19] <Jymmm> Tom_L: for?
[21:08:25] <Tom_shop> any
[21:08:28] <Tom_shop> general use
[21:08:32] <Jymmm> OSX
[21:08:49] <Tom_shop> that's mac
[21:09:14] <Jymmm> debian/
[21:09:20] <Jymmm> ubuntu
[21:09:24] <Jymmm> CentOS
[21:09:32] <Tom_shop> debian seems easiest to run on old junk
[21:09:49] <Jymmm> yeah
[21:10:14] <Tom_shop> i'm dl 8 to try
[21:10:19] <Jymmm> and osx is unix btw =)
[21:10:27] <Tom_shop> it's mac also
[21:10:59] <Jymmm> thats just the gui
[21:11:19] <Tom_shop> so it's actually unix?
[21:11:33] <Jymmm> Yes, bsd based
[21:12:22] <Tom_shop> guess i'll try and see how this works out on a test drive before i commit
[21:12:43] <Jymmm> http://www.opengroup.org/openbrand/register/brand3602.htm
[21:55:27] <Tom_shop> Topic for #garfield is: HEY GIVE ME A HALF HOUR TO ANSWER ALREADY!
[21:55:39] <Tom_shop> rue_shop3, you should change that to a week or two
[21:56:20] <Tom_shop> Jymmm, what's a decent desktop env for debian?
[21:56:24] <Tom_shop> i gotta choose here
[21:56:53] <Tom_shop> xfce, mate, gnome, cinnamon.. couple others
[21:58:56] <Tom_shop> std desktop..
[22:35:45] <Tom_L> the std desktop sucks
[23:08:36] <Jymmm> xfce is lightweigth
[23:17:20] <rue_shop3> busy weekend!
[23:23:55] <Jymmm> rue_shop3: So, hows the new boiler doin?
[23:39:46] <rue_shop3> good
