01:41 rue_house hah, nice
16:36 any15805052 http://www.ebay.com/itm/BRAND-NEW-19-LONG-5-C-STEEL-DRAWBAR-TUBE-CNC-MADE-FREE-SHIPPING-/291405680532 <<== $119
20:02 y15805052 looks a lilpe
20:03 katsmeow collets are theoretically trivial to make on a lathe , if you have a lathe and can cut those threads, and then a bandsaw to cut the slots
20:03 katsmeow but the draw tube is pricey as all heck
20:05 katsmeow the only option that's not way pricey is a nut to mash the collet into the spindle, which makes for a big nut at the end of the spindle
20:07 katsmeow finding such a nut, cutting matching threads onto the end of the spindle, and then some way to secure the nut so it doesn't unwind and drop itself and the collet while it's running
20:23 katsmeow http://stores.ebay.com/stmsurplus
20:32 tsmeow found some 1.25 reamers to bi
20:33 katsmeow need 1 1/8 too
20:35 katsmeow found one
21:12 Tom_itx retention knobs
21:12 katsmeow woo, got the 1.25 (and some others) for $17
21:12 katsmeow hmm?
21:12 Tom_itx non tubular collets use them
21:13 tsmeow listens to Tom go on some
21:14 katsmeow please go one some more?
21:15 Tom_itx http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61c25gmScQL._SX466_.jpg
21:15 Tom_itx the black in the front are retention knobs
21:16 Tom_itx screwed into the collets in the background to hold them in the spindle
21:16 Tom_itx a gripper holds them in
21:17 katsmeow hmm
21:17 Tom_itx that's the style most newer cnc's use
21:19 katsmeow is/was it a smart choice to buy into 5C system, and can i possibly cut the taper to mount the collets in the end of the spindle, and pull/hold them with a generic draw tube such as http://www.ebay.com/itm/BRAND-NEW-19-LONG-5-C-STEEL-DRAWBAR-TUBE-CNC-MADE-FREE-SHIPPING-/291405680532
21:19 katsmeow for instance
21:19 katsmeow or http://www.ebay.com/itm/5C-collet-closer-drawbar-for-lathe-grinder-mill-dividing-head-indexer-/201318326177 <<== and can i lengthen that one if i am careful?
21:21 katsmeow this is another guy who seems to be making them up in his garage as they sell, and charges too much $$ for them : http://www.ebay.com/itm/HARDINGE-5C-COLLET-CLOSER-DRAW-BAR-FREE-SHIPPING-/181705151749
21:22 Tom_itx those look like the tubes we used on the old New Brittan Gridleys
21:22 Tom_itx collet tubes
21:22 katsmeow yeas, prolly 80 yr old tech
21:22 Tom_itx the collet threaded on the end and the nut on the other end to be the tensioner
21:22 Tom_itx maybe 2' long
21:23 Tom_itx depending on the machine
21:23 Tom_itx i ran 6 & 8 spindle lathes that used those
21:23 katsmeow different lengths, also used in lathes, draw tube to match the pass thru the head
21:23 Tom_itx wasn't aware of the collet series
21:24 katsmeow i went with 5C because there seemes a lot of it, and the drillbit chucks to fit the 5C were very sturdy
21:24 Tom_itx we'd run so much metal thru them they'd become packed so tight it was hard to get them out of the spindle
21:24 katsmeow collets look easy to make, and $3 - $6 each
21:24 Tom_itx those collets would hold the material not the tool
21:25 katsmeow yeas, there's expanding collets that go inside the work
21:25 katsmeow and not only collets to hold round, but hex and square too
21:26 Tom_itx yeah we used them all
21:27 katsmeow what are my chances of screwing up if i cut one of the short ones made for a lathe, and welded extension to it?
21:27 Tom_itx how short?
21:27 Tom_itx how long do you want it?
21:28 katsmeow 12 - 15 inches or so
21:28 Tom_itx http://www.automatic-tooling.com/new-britain/NB-Chucking-Tubes-Collet%20Tubes.htm
21:28 katsmeow once the spindle is done, the whatever-lenggth draw tube can be cut down
21:30 katsmeow and firef o x s l o w s t o a c r a w l
21:30 katsmeow is "collet tube" = draw tube" ? or it a "spindle" ?
21:30 Tom_itx draw tube
21:31 Tom_itx it goes in the spindle
21:31 katsmeow i don't have a medel number
21:31 katsmeow model
21:31 katsmeow it's homemade
21:31 katsmeow by me
21:31 Tom_itx i was just showing you what we had
21:31 katsmeow o
21:31 Tom_itx collet on one end and the tension nut on the back
21:31 katsmeow yeas
21:32 Tom_itx the nut was ajustable so you could tighten it when the closer closed the collet
21:32 Tom_itx there were also feed tubes that fed the material in
21:32 katsmeow yeas,, or you just held the lever and let the machine spin it tight
21:32 Tom_itx http://www.automatic-tooling.com/new-britain/NB-Feed-Tubes-Pusher%20Tubes.htm
21:32 Tom_itx those were the feed tubes
21:33 Tom_itx similar attachments went on the end to fit the materials
21:33 tsmeow threatens FF with anotehr
21:33 Tom_itx they were snug but would slip
21:33 Tom_itx i have run most of those machines listed
21:33 Tom_itx not all
21:34 Tom_itx 50 51 52 61 62 816
21:34 Tom_itx i actually forget the 800 series
21:34 Tom_itx 8 spindle
21:35 Tom_itx ~2-6k parts per shift depending on the part
21:35 katsmeow yeow
21:35 Tom_itx 6 12' bars per run
21:35 Tom_itx some only lasted 20 min
21:36 Tom_itx some lasted alot longer
21:36 Tom_itx depending on the length of the part and the material
21:36 Tom_itx have you ever had a coleman lantern?
21:37 katsmeow several, i have 2 propane coleman clones now
21:37 Tom_itx i made both propane and gas parts
21:37 Tom_itx filler caps, pump base, the valve you turn etc
21:37 katsmeow cani offer a suggestion to you about them?
21:37 Tom_itx alot of the propane parts
21:38 Tom_itx the cone shaped part that went on the regulator as well as the regulator
21:38 Tom_itx alot of the brass fittings
21:38 Tom_itx no
21:38 Tom_itx i haven't been there in years
21:38 katsmeow make the neck curly with fins, i amafraid they get so hot after an hour they will melt the rubber/plastic seals in the top of the lp bottle
21:39 Tom_itx i made the gas filler caps for the white gas models
21:39 katsmeow i often use a pressure hose with a metal fitting on the end, i worry about the heat damage to the hose
21:39 Tom_itx thousands of them
21:39 Tom_itx the check valve that works the pump
21:39 katsmeow i have a propane version of the gas coleman stove
21:39 Tom_itx yeah
21:40 katsmeow and a propane parabolic heater
21:40 katsmeow altho the one mantle lantern will keep the bedroom warm even turned down real low
21:40 Tom_itx we made a few parts for the home heaters too but not too many
21:40 katsmeow when it's below 32f outside for days
21:41 Tom_itx the building i worked in they tore down
21:41 katsmeow well, i bought the stuff, why did you quit making it?
21:41 Tom_itx i quit
21:41 katsmeow oh,, tore down building, good reason to not work there
21:41 Tom_itx no they moved
21:41 katsmeow well,, darn
21:42 Tom_itx the area had groundwater polution
21:42 Tom_itx and that was one of the places that was cited
21:42 Tom_itx they're still in the area
21:42 katsmeow uh oh, what did they put intot he ground?
21:43 Tom_itx i'm not sure but there were several industrial buildings that were blamed
21:43 Tom_itx it had been there for many many years
21:45 katsmeow so can i lengthen a draw tube, if i am careful?
21:46 Tom_itx i suppose it would work
21:46 Tom_itx as long as the weld holds ok
21:46 Tom_itx it's under quite a bit of pressure
21:46 katsmeow true
21:46 katsmeow and the tubes are already thin
21:46 Tom_itx 3500 lbs or more
21:47 Tom_itx for those retention knob style anyway
21:47 katsmeow http://www.ebay.com/itm/Unmarked-Lathe-Index-Head-Collet-Closer-for-5C-Collets-Lot-of-8-Collets-included-/171732020929
21:47 katsmeow i don't need the collets, afaik, they don't say what sizes they are anyhow
21:48 Tom_itx those look alot like R8
21:48 Tom_itx maybe bigger
21:48 katsmeow they chuck up to a 1 1/16
21:48 Tom_itx the end should have the size if you can read it
21:48 katsmeow pretty good sized
21:48 Tom_itx those propane regulators were about as big as we went material size iirc
21:49 Tom_itx the brown & sharps & davenports ran the tiny materials
21:49 Tom_itx from wire size on up
21:50 katsmeow the drillbit chuck i got for using in a mill has a 3/4 shaft on it, that's twice the dia of the drill press spindle i bent to a 30 deg where it was necked down
21:50 Tom_itx i had the best row of machines in the whole shop
21:50 Tom_itx 2 or 3 of them ran the same parts day in and day out
21:51 Tom_itx until close to the end when the economy started to tank
21:51 katsmeow still dunno why it bent, i wasn't side loading it much at all, altho at high rpm
21:52 katsmeow anyhow, 40 yr old press,it has other issues too
21:55 katsmeow i should prolly forget about lengthing the tube, why build a new machine with built-in issues?
21:57 Tom_itx or modify the machine to fit the tube?
21:57 Tom_itx or some other standard tube
21:58 Tom_itx also make a 'collet' with a flange so you could mount a 3 or 4 jaw chuck
21:58 tsmeow
21:58 katsmeow only way to mod the design to fit a shorter tube is to make a shorter spindle
22:00 katsmeow the draw tube shown is prolly only 6" from knob on down, if i put the drive at the top, right under the knob, my bearings will be only a couple inches apart
22:01 katsmeow there's longer tubes on ebay, but they start at $100
22:01 Tom_itx i couldn't tell how long it was
22:01 Tom_itx i'm goin to bed. long day
22:01 katsmeow http://www.ebay.com/itm/5C-collet-closer-drawbar-for-lathe-grinder-mill-dividing-head-indexer-/201318326177 <<== tape measure
22:02 katsmeow http://www.ebay.com/itm/Unmarked-Lathe-Index-Head-Collet-Closer-for-5C-Collets-Lot-of-8-Collets-included-/171732020929 <<== looks even shorter
22:02 katsmeow i didn't get a lot done, but i am set up for attaching winch to old boat hull to drag it first thing tomorrow
23:46 rue_house 74--590
23:46 rue_house wonder if I ahve any
23:47 katsmeow i was just wonderingif yu do too
23:47 rue_house hmm 11 hour day
23:47 rue_house (work)
