00:11 rue_shop3 it 'pings' a transformer winding and counts the ring cycles, by shunting the winding with a .22uF cap, square waving with a TL081, divinging the cycles down with a 4584, counting and displaying them with a 4017
00:11 katsmeow-afk k
00:11 rue_shop3 I'm gonna take it apart cause I havn't used it in years
00:12 rue_shop3 I used to check flybacks with it
00:12 rue_shop3 if its got a shorted winding it of course dosn't ring, and you get no counts
00:12 katsmeow-afk it's so few parts, why notleaveit assembled?
00:12 rue_shop3 you get almost 10 counts on a ringy good coil
00:12 rue_shop3 its on a breadboard
00:13 rue_shop3 maybe I shoudl jot down the schematic first eh?
00:13 rue_shop3 it worked great
00:13 katsmeow-afk yeas, so you can make a real pcb for it later
00:14 katsmeow-afk but surely you don't need to destroy it just to get a .22u cap, a TL081, a 4584 and a 4017
00:48 rue_shop3 no I want the breakbaord back
00:48 rue_shop3 that said, I seem to have used a pretty breat up breadbaord
00:48 katsmeow-afk o
00:48 rue_shop3 so kat, tell me your thoughts on this
00:49 rue_shop3 I'm working on installing flush burried led lights in the yard
00:49 rue_shop3 and I have a few colours,
00:49 rue_shop3 red green blue white, etc
00:49 rue_shop3 I'd like to colour code the lights for paths, borders, etc
00:49 katsmeow-afk the animals may dig them up
00:49 rue_shop3 na, 4" thick glass cups
00:50 rue_shop3 technically candle jars, whatever
00:50 rue_shop3 do you have any ideas on what colours I might use for what?
00:50 rue_shop3 I'm not good at artibrary descisions
00:51 rue_shop3 green for paths, red for large steps in ground level, white for flat borders?
00:51 katsmeow-afk depends on what the plants are doing : if the leaves are bright green, dewy, flowering
00:51 rue_shop3 maybe I should just mix them up randomly
00:51 rue_shop3 no, its really dim
00:51 rue_shop3 such that it dosn't really even throw your night vision
00:51 katsmeow-afk so they don't illuminate, they just mark borders?
00:52 rue_shop3 just a dim glow, were talking like 1 3mm led on a 4.7k - 10k resistor, 12V
00:52 katsmeow-afk try a 2w bright white unfocussed up under broadleafed tree branches
00:53 katsmeow-afk by "under", i mean the leaves are 12-40ft off the ground
00:53 rue_shop3 me and someone played around on a dark night, worked out the brightness level
00:54 katsmeow-afk white where you walk, red for steps, green for planter borders
00:54 katsmeow-afk i'd try rgb leds, and motion sensors to detect you
00:55 katsmeow-afk i'd prolly do more downlighting and uplighting, where you do not see the sourse of the light, and it does not shine into your eyes
00:55 rue_shop3 I'm gonna be burring the 12V lines all other the place, so I may play around
00:56 katsmeow-afk "all over" ? why not one power pair and one signal pair?
00:56 katsmeow-afk put a avr where each led string ties in
00:56 rue_shop3 the circuit is auto off after the solar panel picks up more than 1.4V
00:56 rue_shop3 (12V panel)
00:58 katsmeow-afk before i poured my concrete columns for the front porch, i embedded 1/2 cpvc as conduit, and voids for down-lights, and a few 120vac/240vac outlets
00:59 katsmeow-afk that was 15 yrs ago, i have not done anything but pull the wire, then the neighbors moved in
01:00 katsmeow-afk but i do like the look of a few watts of "bright blue white" unfocudssed and shining up into the trees, just enough lite you can make out the glow, the dew sparkling, and still see the moon
01:01 katsmeow-afk put deep cans over recessed lites, so you cannot see where the lite comes from
01:02 katsmeow-afk otherwise, i'd set up so you can have the puter control lite color and brightness as you move around
01:02 katsmeow-afk that way too you can use the avr to send signals to the mowerbot optically
01:05 katsmeow-afk yanno a 20x20 grid of 5 gallon buckets with 4 gallons of dirt, to grow food in, might weigh as much as 29,000 lbs? this is just one reason why using them on the roof is problematic
01:10 rue_shop3 ma grows on a boat, uses really light soil
01:11 rue_shop3 lots of good tricks, like putting an upside down plat pot in a plant pot to 'gut out' the volume of soil
01:11 katsmeow-afk i was thinking as much mulch as possible, less dirt, but still adding water makes mulch heavy too
01:12 katsmeow-afk yeas, i add large handfulls of leaves first, over the drain holes
01:12 katsmeow-afk some of my tomatoe plants grew down thru the 5gal buckets and out the drain holes
01:13 katsmeow-afk the roots ddid
01:13 katsmeow-afk i need a way to trap that drain water too
01:13 katsmeow-afk a *cheap* way, using the roof to do it is a bad idea
01:14 rue_shop3 I started work on the potato garden today
01:14 rue_shop3 again
01:14 rue_shop3 cause, I started last week too
01:14 rue_shop3 hmm
01:14 katsmeow-afk ok, add tall fence posts at the corners, squirrel away led lites into those posts
01:15 katsmeow-afk you can drill hold holes diagonally from led to led, so all the wiring ends up inside the post
01:15 rue_shop3 :) cool
01:15 katsmeow-afk err, hold holes to hold the leds, and wire holes for the ,, um wiring
01:16 katsmeow-afk else, if you have a bandsaw, split the post, install wiring and leds, screw it back together
01:17 katsmeow-afk install leds, cameras, motion sensors, and a speakerphone
01:17 rue_shop3 screws up treated stuff
01:18 rue_shop3 red for steps and slopes?
01:18 tsmeow-afk
01:20 katsmeow-afk hologram projectors if you have them and they fit
01:21 katsmeow-afk "rue, we are in the cra in your driveway, a bear ran up and dove under the car, and we can hear it under the car, and we don't want to get out.........."
01:21 katsmeow-afk (mowerbot is under the car tapping on it)
01:22 rue_shop3 heheh
01:26 rue_shop3 drat, that fine hard drive cable is solid core wire
01:37 rue_shop3 aha, I found an ultra scsiII cable with some finer stranded wire
02:01 katsmeow-afk didja see the pic of downloading?
02:15 rue_shop3 no....
02:16 katsmeow-afk do you want to?
02:17 katsmeow-afk http://designerthinking.com/Internet%2520download.gif
02:31 rue_shop3 hahaha love it
02:32 e_shop3 tries to click ca
02:32 rue_shop3 :)
02:32 katsmeow-afk :-)
02:34 katsmeow-afk "The mission of the Submarine Force Library and Museum is to preserve the rich heritage og the U.S. submarine community for future generations."
02:34 katsmeow-afk "og" ?
02:38 rue_shop3 as the wires on this project I'm working on go around mechanical joints, I'm putting them in a small tube, I ran out of room in the tube as the wire collected up, so I'm now using two tubes
02:38 rue_shop3 ascii('g')-1;
02:38 katsmeow-afk umm, you know the tubes become less felxable as you cram them full of wire, and that will sress the wire?
02:40 katsmeow-afk note the new 3-armed men in the usa military: http://www.navy.mil/navydata/cno/n87/usw/issue_22/images/5vm_lead.gif
02:43 rue_shop3 grrr 8" arm, I thought 18" of wire would be enough
02:44 rue_shop3 wtf?
02:44 rue_shop3 I can see about 5 things in that image that dont compute
02:45 rue_shop3 6
02:48 katsmeow-afk usa is wierd
02:51 rue_shop3 only 2 arms? REJECTED.
02:52 rue_shop3 arg
02:52 katsmeow-afk turns out underseawarfare@navy.mil is a restricted address
02:52 rue_shop3 I want to print a part and the printer is tied up for another 2 hours
02:52 katsmeow-afk so i sent them a 2nd bug report that they have a restricted email address on a public webpage
02:53 rue_shop3 did it send?
02:53 katsmeow-afk looks ike the 2nd one sent ok, so someone is watching the addy
02:54 katsmeow-afk either that, or there will be some FBI boys here in themorning
02:56 katsmeow-afk hmm, now i wonder if Tiggr didn't find me a restricted website that i only think is public
02:56 katsmeow-afk wouldn't be the first time
02:57 katsmeow-afk does having dimensions and weights of the uss Kentucky mil submarine's sail planes constitute trason?
02:57 katsmeow-afk treason?
02:59 katsmeow-afk this is how you know a usa president is lying, wheny ou have history to back you up: As an adjunct to Admiral Yamamoto’s plan for the invasion of Midway in June 1942, the Dutch Harbor facilities were heavily damaged on the 3rd and 4th in bombing raids by carrier aircraft from IJS Ryujo and IJS Junyo.
02:59 katsmeow-afk altho Alaska wasn't a usa state at the time, the usa did "own" it
03:00 katsmeow-afk Bush said the usa mainland was never bombed
03:00 katsmeow-afk heck, i think every one has bombed it, even Canada has
03:01 rue_shop3 hah, cat surprised me out of my skin, I was working at a table and suddenly there was a cat hanging off the screen window infront of me
03:01 rue_shop3 hanging there, nothing under him
03:01 katsmeow-afk yeas, we do that
03:09 katsmeow-afk is there a recommeded spray plastic for preventing shorts in electical gear due to condensation?
03:10 rue_shop3 its a thin silicone spray
03:10 rue_shop3 conformal coating
03:10 katsmeow-afk what's it's name?
03:11 rue_shop3 upc 779008422342
03:12 rue_shop3 ?
03:12 katsmeow-afk MG Chem 422A-340G Silicone Conformal Coating Aerosol Spray
03:12 rue_shop3 UL file no E203094
03:12 rue_shop3 k your on it
03:13 katsmeow-afk odd name, considering every paint evermade is a "conformal coating"
03:14 katsmeow-afk the last few weeks, every hunk of steel under cover in the garage has been drippy covered in water from condensation
03:15 rue_shop3 hmm
03:18 rue_shop3 wow
03:18 rue_shop3 I used a peice of the edge connector of a 30 pin dimm as a soldering strip for splicing two wires, and I didn't short any of the rows
03:25 rue_shop3 1.5 hrs left
03:25 rue_shop3 more than enough time to design the part I want to print
03:27 rue_shop3 the tube OD is 3.3mm
03:29 rue_shop3 the head of a 4-40 screw is
03:29 rue_shop3 call it 5.5mm
03:29 rue_shop3 the thread od is call it 3mm
03:33 tsmeow-afk goes afk for alay-down, see if it leads to s
03:37 rue_shop3 its only 1am!
03:37 e_shop3 checks his tea l
03:37 rue_shop3 erp, more tea!
05:36 katsmeow-afk that didn't work
05:41 rue_shop3 ?
05:41 rue_shop3 try again later
05:42 katsmeow-afk well, i am pretty sure eventually, i shall sleeep, but it may be at amore inconvienentl time
05:42 katsmeow-afk i need to cleanoff this desk, so ia m not reaching over stuff to type
05:53 rue_shop3 I wonder how I could do a 4-16V, 12A current sink
05:53 rue_shop3 hmm
05:53 katsmeow-afk 10 pcs of IRFZ44
05:53 rue_shop3 not enough voltage for a fet gate?
05:53 katsmeow-afk separate gate supply
05:53 rue_shop3 lm317 with fet assist?
05:54 rue_shop3 hmm
05:55 katsmeow-afk i was going to use MJ15022 / 23's
05:55 katsmeow-afk they don't pull down to 0v , but they get below 1v , and they go up to 200v, and have a huge SOA at 80v
05:56 katsmeow-afk the big problem with them is how the heck to get rid of the heat
05:57 katsmeow-afk doing 10 in parallel and two of those in series, it can safely sink 20 amps at 160vdc, but that's 3,200 watts of heat, it practiclaly screams for liquid cooling
05:58 katsmeow-afk or safely sink 14amps at120vac (rectified), but again, that's 1700 watts
05:58 rue_shop3 its just for a battery tester ;)
05:59 katsmeow-afk imagine it's blowing as loud, as fast, and as hot as the most powerful hairdryer or handheld 120v paint burner
05:59 katsmeow-afk you have 12v AND 48v battery systems
06:01 katsmeow-afk i'd use the big MJ15022 or 23's, they don't cost a fortune, you need current sense resistors (emitter resistors) anyhow, and they throw a lot of temperature
06:01 katsmeow-afk MJ11015 or 16 too, they are 30amp, but cost a bit more, you'e over spend on heatsinks for them, unless you already have them
06:02 katsmeow-afk else, got some furnace heater coils you can multi-tap for 1 ohm?
06:03 katsmeow-afk you could throw some 2n or tip 3055 or 2955 at the problem
06:05 katsmeow-afk i'd use the pnp versions of the bipolars, so you can bolt the cases to the heatsink with no insulators, and pull the bases to gnd with a mosfet, this way your base current comes from the battery too, and witht he emitter resistors sticking up to the (+) batteryterminal, you can measuer total current easily
06:09 katsmeow-afk i'd use cheaper transistors, so you canspread them around a cheap (or many cheap) heatsinks, so no temperature concentrations
06:09 katsmeow-afk grab a dead 500w peavey power amp from some bass guitarist, those have good heatsinks
06:11 katsmeow-afk if it's only for 12v, you canprolly get away with TIP36/35's, but they aren't much good for the 48v testing
06:11 katsmeow-afk tip147's may be cheaper in thelong run
06:18 katsmeow-afk if you use pnp bipolars, and mosfet n-chan to pull th ebases down to the collectors, you can use the cheapest 12vdc psu you can find to power it, whatever size you'd need to run a volt-amp display
06:20 katsmeow-afk some 100vdv 50amp displays on ebay for $6
06:21 katsmeow-afk add an opamp to twiddle the mosfet's gate and dial in your current with a cheap pot and knob, and you're set
06:21 katsmeow-afk maybe a voltage sense opamp to kill the load when the volts get down to 10v or something
06:22 katsmeow-afk maybe a current sourse to make a tracking current load so as the V drops the current stays the same
06:22 katsmeow-afk TL431
06:23 katsmeow-afk add a 30amp phuse or 2, in case a transistor shorts
06:50 tsmeow-afk ponders a way to use 11 transistors, and toggle each 1 off at a time to measure it's base-emitter voltage as a temperature c
07:04 rue_bed hmmm
07:05 katsmeow-afk Tom should be making heatsinks
07:06 katsmeow-afk some 3/8 plate, slit it every 0.2 inches, drop in a .030 plate of aluminum in each slit, stake the slit closed
07:06 katsmeow-afk heavy heatsinks are still a fortune
07:07 katsmeow-afk cheap ones are often simply too thin
07:09 katsmeow-afk http://www.ebay.com/itm/291359065647 <<== i can put 20 TO-3 on this, but they'd be good for only 5 watts each, at best, with fan on
13:22 rue_bed what aboiut the old stack of aluminum U peices?
13:24 rue_bed copper is getting scarse enough that cat5 is now made as copper clad aluminum
14:35 katsmeow-afk that's not going to work
14:36 katsmeow-afk the crimp terminals will corrode off in under a year
17:34 katsmeow-afk i am actually wondering if a thin liquid cooled transistor mount can be made, such that the entire compact heatsink-transistor assy can be put inside the non-conductive liquid, and a cheap stack of hollow flatplate radiator be in the airflow
17:35 katsmeow-afk it's advantage would be all sides of the transistor get cooled, not just the base, the liquid is relatively the same temperature thruout the heat-pickup assy, and the heat dump in the airflow can be super thin metals as close together as wanted
17:36 katsmeow-afk because the temperature hotspots of the transistors is now no longer relavant to the heat dumping surface
17:39 katsmeow-afk in addition, i have seen some hefty TO-3 cans running so hot for months at a time, they unsolder themselves unless the base-emitter leads were in forced airflow
17:40 katsmeow-afk that's not easy to do when the leads are in holes drileld thru the 3/8 thick heatsink, and you wann amake the holes as small as possible to maximize the metal under the transistor
17:46 katsmeow-afk take a 6inch long 1/4 plate, cut it with radiused edges to press into a 1.25 pipe, mount TO-3 cans on both sides of the plate, press in, seal with endcaps having hose/tube connectors, one endcap with electrical feed thrus
17:48 katsmeow-afk or a C=- arrangement, where the slitted pipe C has a formed clamping surface = which clamps the electrical connections on a pcb - sticking out
17:54 katsmeow-afk using flat liquid channels .062 thick, spaced .062 apart, then in a 3x10x2.5 inch space you could have 8 sq FEET of radiating surface
17:54 katsmeow-afk wait, what?
17:55 katsmeow-afk a 2.5inch wide space has 20 plates across it
17:55 katsmeow-afk each plate is 3x10 inches, or 30 inches surface, times 2 because it radiated both sides, or 60 sq inches
17:56 katsmeow-afk 60 sq inches times 20 plates, is 1200 sq inches of surface, or /144 = 8.3 sq FEET of heatsink surface
17:57 katsmeow-afk so what is wrong with the calculations or method?
18:07 rue_house dosn't wrok great for ir radiation if the plates are parallel
18:07 rue_house ok I tilled the potato area really well
18:07 rue_house I hit new depths :)
18:08 katsmeow-afk forced air, 60mm small fan
18:08 rue_house (guaged by the rocks I pulled out)
18:08 rue_house today I want to work on my power supply
18:08 rue_house I just have to do the laundry and grocery shopping
18:08 katsmeow-afk tilled? can't you just flip it over?
18:08 rue_house I want to install a charger in my truck, it dosn't like sitting for a week with no use
18:09 rue_house not that dirt, it was as hard as clay
18:09 rue_house prolly cuase its almost 50
18:09 rue_house % clay
18:09 katsmeow-afk ok, but once you till it, put it where you can just flip it over next time
18:09 rue_house its in a trench
18:09 rue_house I dont have room to put it elsewhere
18:09 katsmeow-afk that's not my problem you put it in the wrong place
18:10 rue_house I barely had room to put the soil for the stackable potato planters
18:10 rue_house it was in the gound! I didn't put it there! :)
18:10 rue_house I need lots of free bricks
18:11 rue_house maybe I shoudl go rob a bank
18:11 rue_house they have lots of bricks
18:11 tsmeow-afk hands rue a truck load of 55 gal drums to split, mount on shaft, so just a quick turn, and what was inside upright is now inside and upside down,, aka flip
18:12 katsmeow-afk and, the drums fit into the trench, if you like
18:12 rue_house the tiller did really good, too bad I only have about 96'^2 to till
18:13 katsmeow-afk turn the mowerbot on edge, so it sliced top to bottom in the trench, and slings the dirt up and over into the trench behind itself
18:13 rue_house hmm
18:14 rue_house automated potato garden
18:14 rue_house ...
18:14 katsmeow-afk also, attachment on top of the mowerbot, so it can run up under the truck to attach power cord and telemetry lan
18:14 rue_house "what do you mean its trimming the potatoes and churning the grass! not again!"
18:15 katsmeow-afk seriously, you are underestimating the duties a well equipped mowerbot can perform when not mowing grass
18:15 rue_house I have to get the new mowerbot working, to even the most basic degree
18:16 katsmeow-afk carry groceries and firewood, rototill, carry trash cans, adjust the mecha, etc
18:16 rue_house and I'm still trying to think of an automatic rice dispencer I can actaully make
18:16 rue_house one that wont jam on unruly kernels
18:16 rue_house grains/ whatever
18:17 katsmeow-afk every night, when no ne is looking, it moves the mecha's foot about a foot, so in a months time people wonder about it
18:17 rue_house oh yea, need to work out a knee or elbow for the mecha
18:17 katsmeow-afk jam on the grains? nono, just crush or slice thru the unruly grains
18:17 rue_house oh
18:18 rue_house the pile of grain will only slump so far
18:18 rue_house hmm
18:18 rue_house I'm gonna use a plastic milk jug to hold the bulk grain
18:18 katsmeow-afk vibrator, WHAM WHAM WHAM WTF WAS THAT!?
18:18 rue_house oooh, like pill dispencers
18:18 rue_house ooo yea
18:19 rue_house I saw a metering hopper that worked like that at the cerial factory
18:19 katsmeow-afk you can prolly use a plain large pvc ball valve to close off rice flow, it dodnesn't need to close entirely, like watertight, only enough the rice cannot leak thru
18:19 rue_house the vibrator moves the grains up a spour
18:19 rue_house spout
18:19 katsmeow-afk yeas, vibrator tables, moving logs into chippers too
18:20 katsmeow-afk too much trouble, use a ball valve and milk jug
18:21 rue_house I want it electronic, bal valve is a little heavy, but maybe a T with a half pipe inside it
18:21 rue_house or a +
18:21 rue_house or just a flap --
18:21 tsmeow-afk nods,, whatever size servo you have fo
18:21 katsmeow-afk flap won't work
18:21 rue_house semiridgid
18:22 katsmeow-afk once side can be jambed open and the other side will freeflow
18:22 rue_house goes from -- to |
18:22 katsmeow-afk nice thing about the ball valve: the inside of the ball will retain rice and act as an impediment to leakage
18:23 katsmeow-afk you have two constricting closures with aball valve, and they are in series
18:23 rue_house metering is the other problem
18:23 katsmeow-afk not really, fill the space tween two ball valves
18:24 katsmeow-afk telescoping ppe can adjust the space
18:24 rue_house http://www.weathershack.com/images/tipping-bucket-rain-gauge.gif
18:24 rue_house oooh, you mean a displacement thing, hmm
18:24 katsmeow-afk tilling buckets are usually open to bugs and rodents
18:24 katsmeow-afk i fished a dead drouwned squirrel outa my water last week
18:25 rue_house it can all be within box
18:25 rue_house :( ickgh
18:25 katsmeow-afk yeas
18:25 rue_house maybe a squirrel ladder is a good idea
18:25 rue_house or an aunti squirrel net
18:26 katsmeow-afk the plan was to have steel tanks inside, with covers and UV lamps in them,, the gods fucked that plan to hell
18:27 katsmeow-afk frankly, i am less troubled by the dead rodents and frogs in the water than the chemical ashes from burning garbage settling out of the air into the water
18:27 rue_house do you know how it got in there?
18:27 katsmeow-afk i dunno, went in for a drink and slipped
18:28 rue_house if I dont go grocery shopping I'm not gonna have groceries
18:28 katsmeow-afk cannot video the water, might catch an image of the gods, which would violate their right to privacy while shitting in my water, and i goto jail for 10 years
18:28 rue_house then I'll come back and work on bench power supplies
18:28 katsmeow-afk send the mowerbot
18:29 katsmeow-afk really, taxi the moserbot to the store, it goes in and collects foods, then taxi back
18:29 katsmeow-afk moserbot,, it mosies around and does things
18:30 katsmeow-afk mozy? mozey?
18:30 katsmeow-afk walkaboutbot? walkabot?
18:30 tsmeow-afk goes out to do thing too,
19:20 katsmeow-afk fished another squirrel out of the water

20:03 katsmeow-afk CommentsComments
20:03 katsmeow-afk The ZX Spectrum was a landmark home computer of the 1980s. Along with the Commodore 64 and the BBC Micro, it introduced an entire generation to computing.
20:03 katsmeow-afk It launched in 1982 and for some years it was the best-selling computer in the UK.
20:03 katsmeow-afk The ZX stopped production in 1990.
20:04 katsmeow-afk But it is being brought back to life by a company called Elite Systems, which has tried to replicate the PC as closely as possible, including the rubberized keyboard and metal casing. The new machine is being called the Recreated Sinclair ZX Spectrum.
20:05 katsmeow-afk it's apparently a recreation keybd that plugs into a smartphone or tablet, and the phone emulates the old puter

20:08 katsmeow-afk The pilot announced that the long haul flight could not continue due to health and safety concerns over pungent odour emanating from plane's toilet
20:08 katsmeow-afk shame they couldn't just open a window

20:40 katsmeow-afk this is the problem with mini-itx : http://www.ebay.com/itm/DELL-COMPUTER-OptiPlex-380-Win-7-Pro-Small-Form-Factor-250-GB-HD-GREAT-DEAL-/221716508503
20:41 katsmeow-afk you just cannot buy a mini for the price of a full puter with M$ OS , with hdd, with dvd/cd player/writer, and with psu, in a case
20:42 Tom_itx do you run win7?
20:42 katsmeow-afk ditto http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Optiplex-755-SFF-Desktop-PC-1gb-Mem-CD-ROM-Vista-Business-80gb-hdd/331501852935
20:43 katsmeow-afk no, but i have vista on the laptop, and the 2nd url is $50 vista puters
20:43 Tom_itx i wonder if there's a way to force programs to run on win7 64
20:43 Tom_itx older programs
20:43 katsmeow-afk "compatability mode" ?
20:43 Tom_itx how?
20:44 Tom_itx it won't install to begin with
20:44 katsmeow-afk user config setting soewhere
20:44 katsmeow-afk i have all 32bit stuff running on the 64bit laptop running a 64bit OS
20:44 Tom_itx i need to figure that out then
20:45 katsmeow-afk orig owner gave it to me because it kept shutting off,, i changed user setting that told it to shut off every few minutes, have no problems of that sort
20:45 katsmeow-afk orig owner teaches computer classes
20:46 Tom_itx i have alot of programs i'd like to move to it but they won't run
20:46 Tom_itx unless i can figure it out
20:47 katsmeow-afk ... it will probably run in a 32-bit version of Windows 7. But no DOS program can ever run in a 64-bit version of Windows 7. Except that there's a workaround. ... You can launch most DOS apps in a 32-bit version of Windows 7 simply by double-clicking the DOS program's .exe or .com file.
20:47 katsmeow-afk seems the 32bit apps that won't run are using 16bit *dos* loader/installers, and *those* won't install on the 64bit OS
20:48 Tom_itx maybe i need a 32bit ver then
20:48 katsmeow-afk try installing them in a dos shell
20:48 katsmeow-afk How to install and run an older program in Compatibility mode..
20:48 katsmeow-afk Locate the setup file, right click on it and select Properties
20:48 katsmeow-afk Click on the Compatibility tab and check 'Run this program as administrator' in the Privilege level section
20:48 Tom_itx things like my cad cam program
20:48 katsmeow-afk Check the 'Run this program in Compatibility mode' and select the operating system which you know that the program ran in without problems
20:48 katsmeow-afk Apply the changes and OK to exit
20:48 katsmeow-afk Run the setup file.
20:49 katsmeow-afk After the program has installed, locate the desktop or Start Menu icon, right click and select Properties
20:49 katsmeow-afk Go to the Compatibility tab and check 'Run this program as administrator' in the Privilege level section.
20:49 katsmeow-afk Apply the change, OK to exit and then start the program from the icon
20:49 Tom_itx i'm still trying to find things like show file extensions in the file window...
20:49 katsmeow-afk oh
20:49 katsmeow-afk Yes - you can try compatibility mode - just like in Windows XP and Windows Vista before it.
20:49 katsmeow-afk http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Make-older-programs-run-in-this-version-of-Windows
20:49 katsmeow-afk You can also - if running Windows 7 Professional or above - install Windows XP Mode.
20:49 katsmeow-afk http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/install-and-use-windows-xp-mode-in-windows-7
20:50 katsmeow-afk right click, check the properties of every setup file on every app
20:51 Tom_itx i've already installed it.. can i switch to compatibility mode?
20:52 katsmeow-afk it installed ok?
20:52 Tom_itx yeah
20:52 Tom_itx on my new quad core board
20:52 katsmeow-afk rt click on the app icon, browse everything under properties and run-as and setup till you find something about xp comptability, or 32bit ot "mode"
20:54 katsmeow-afk Since WOW64 runs in user mode, all 32-bit application code must also run in user mode. This explains why 32-bit kernel mode device drivers and applications that rely on them, will not work under Windows 64-bit. <<== meaning the 32bit apps may not run in admin mode, but only user mode
20:54 katsmeow-afk you will need the following files (alledgedly) :
20:54 katsmeow-afk Wow64.dll – the core emulation infrastructure and the links to the Ntoskrnl.exe entry-point functions.
20:54 katsmeow-afk Wow64Win.dll – the links to the Win32k.sys entry-point functions.
20:54 katsmeow-afk Wow64Cpu.dll – switches the processor from 32-bit to 64-bit mode.
20:54 katsmeow-afk Ntdll.dll – 64-bit version.
20:55 katsmeow-afk 32-bit applications files are installed into
20:55 katsmeow-afk C:\Program Files(x86)
20:55 katsmeow-afk 32-bit system files are installed into
20:55 katsmeow-afk C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64
20:55 Tom_itx well, the programs aren't installed, however i did copy all the files over
20:55 katsmeow-afk WOW64 does not support 16-bit installers
20:55 katsmeow-afk WOW64 provides support for Microsoft's 16-bit installer - by substituting a compatible 32-bit installer - but does not extend this support to third-party products.
20:56 Tom_itx figures
20:57 katsmeow-afk well, verify you are in some user mode, not in admin mode, then check the app properites popup, check "compatability mode", try to run in the 64bit's user mode, not as admin
20:58 katsmeow-afk lotts "stuff" at https://duckduckgo.com/?q=run+32bit+program+on+win7
20:58 Tom_itx where can i change the file settins to show file extensions?
20:58 katsmeow-afk but it's basically what i already said
20:58 katsmeow-afk in explorer
20:59 Tom_itx i tried to find it..
20:59 katsmeow-afk select "tools", and "folder options"
20:59 Tom_itx still getting used to the layout
20:59 katsmeow-afk explorer, the thing you browse files on the hdd with
21:00 Tom_itx there we go.. had to turn on the menu bar
21:00 katsmeow-afk first thing ever do: locate the apps buried in the OS that M$ wants you to not use any more, drag shortcuts to them onto the desktop
21:01 katsmeow-afk drag Explorer, Calc, Taskmgr, cmd.exe, etc etc
21:06 Tom_L i wonder if i imported my programs from the other pc if it would install them
21:06 Tom_L using their import thing
21:07 Tom_L 'transfer your files'
21:07 katsmeow-afk i wond not even try,, and it's because ANY contact winxp had with win95 sturr, it trashed it to be unuseable
21:08 katsmeow-afk i had win95 stuff on d:\, winxp found it when i looked in c:\ from the xp puter, and xp cut up the stuf on d:\ on the other puter
21:09 katsmeow-afk also plugged in a d:\ from win95 onto a winxp puter to move html/txt files, winxp tore up the win95 binaries on the d:\
21:09 katsmeow-afk deleted all updates, all patches, reverted it to fat16 and non-y2k compliant for instance
21:10 katsmeow-afk i do not give the vista puter access to this puter
21:10 katsmeow-afk i move files tween another puter that i can put in re-cloned c:\ drives if i need to
21:13 Tom_L how can i install programs in compatibility mode though?
21:14 katsmeow-afk move them with a thumbdrive
21:15 katsmeow-afk drag-drop
21:15 Tom_afk well that works
21:15 Tom_afk but i can't get all the dlls etc that go in the system dirs etc
21:16 katsmeow-afk o
21:17 katsmeow-afk this is why i still use winxp
21:17 Tom_afk me too
21:17 Tom_afk but i got this new board for my cnc and wanted to also use it with windows
21:17 Tom_afk xp won't load on it
21:18 katsmeow-afk clone yur winxp c:\, put it on the win7 box?
21:18 katsmeow-afk oh
21:18 Tom_afk i tried that already
21:18 katsmeow-afk well, you can't use your cnc on the win7 box now anyhow
21:18 Tom_afk i know but i have a hdd i can plug into it and it's ready to go
21:22 tsmeow-afk looks a lil confused, how CY7C1021BV33-15VC chips she bought Sept 2014 for ~8 CENTS each now sell for $2 an
21:30 katsmeow-afk http://www.ebay.com/itm/XANTREX-XPOWER-1-000-WATT-MOBILE-POWER-INVERTER-2-AC-OUTLETS-REFURBISHED/360914669577 <<== $40
21:31 katsmeow-afk prolly good for 400watts
21:31 katsmeow-afk mind you, 400 watts is 34 amps out of the 12v battery, it won't last long
21:33 Tom_L thanks, i think that link you posted will help
21:33 katsmeow-afk <curtsey>
21:33 Tom_L i need to install the compatibility mode files
21:33 Tom_L from ms
21:34 Tom_L then it says i can install xp programs
21:34 rue_house windows on windows on windows on windows
21:34 Tom_L we'll see...
21:41 katsmeow-afk on vista atm, i have installed wget, tor, FF (uninstalled chrome, but it did work), mirc, a 32bit vpn, vlc, Sumatra pdf/ebook reader, Textpad (from win95 days!), openoffice32, utorrent 32, etc, no problems
21:41 katsmeow-afk tor installed with privoxy and vidalia
21:43 katsmeow-afk i did copying, i didn't run actual installs except for FF and Chrome and openoffice
21:44 katsmeow-afk afaik, new tor will not interface with privoxy/vidalia combo any more
21:45 Tom_L funny, mirc ran just fine on 7
21:46 katsmeow-afk winrar and winzip and 7z 32 too
21:46 Tom_L yeah i have those but haven't installed them on it yet
21:46 Tom_L md5sum
21:47 katsmeow-afk all i can say is check in all the tabs available for a 32bit / winxp compatability mode
21:47 Tom_L i will
21:48 katsmeow-afk took me hours to find how to keep this supposedly defective laptop from powering itself down
21:48 katsmeow-afk there were *3* screen power setting locations
21:49 katsmeow-afk and for some idiot reaon, killing the laptop screenkills the external vga too
21:49 Tom_L you're good like that though
21:49 katsmeow-afk the original owner bought it to drive a projector and do presentations, didn't work when the thing kept killing itself
21:50 katsmeow-afk so i got a free virtually unused laptop outa it :-)
21:51 katsmeow-afk i left grinder out on the steel , i should go get it before dew soaks it
21:51 katsmeow-afk afk
22:01 Tom_L hah
22:01 Tom_L it didn't like that at all
22:28 katsmeow-afk hmm?
22:29 Tom_L this MB won't allow xp mode
22:29 katsmeow-afk ouch
22:29 Tom_L i got a blue screen during installing xp mode support
22:29 katsmeow-afk no bios boot settings for it?
22:30 Tom_L not that i can seee
22:30 Tom_L it says it's made for 7 & 8
22:30 Tom_L and i knew that going in
22:30 tsmeow-afk
22:30 Tom_L but i didn't expect it not to load a virtual mode
22:31 Tom_L it's fine, i can use my atom board for this instead and use the new one for the mill
22:31 Tom_L i got it because it has an pcie slot for a board i got
22:31 Tom_L the other one didn't
22:32 Tom_L well, it did but not a 'standard' one
22:32 Tom_L one for a mini card
22:32 tsmeow-afk
22:32 Tom_L not a normal 'slot' card
22:32 Tom_L this one has a pcie 1 and a pcie 16 slot plus 2 pci
22:33 tsmeow-afk will prolly stay with pci until they make optical connectors for c
22:33 Tom_L this pcie card was free
22:34 Tom_L so i can use it as a spare for the mill or another cnc
22:34 Tom_itx time to sleep
22:35 katsmeow-afk sinus headache, humans buring garbage all day
22:35 katsmeow-afk i been using sinus spray, cannot find the pills
22:36 Tom_itx i get generic zertec for really cheap
22:36 Tom_itx like $4 / 100
22:36 Tom_itx maybe it was $6 i forget
22:36 katsmeow-afk if i could only find the pills i am sure i have
22:45 katsmeow-afk ok, a bolt of poplin is 45ft, so two passes make 22ft to shade a 16ft boat, and it's 14 wide, and 4 passes cover 20ft (not subtracting sewing allowances), so 2 bolts cover 20x22 to shade a 14x16 boat, coincidinkly that's 3ft extended past the boat all the way around
22:49 katsmeow-afk cost for fabric = ~$100
23:11 katsmeow-afk cost for corregated tin: ~$300
23:57 katsmeow-afk the drip of rainwater on your face at 2am, knowing it's white because it's filtered thru a year of bird droppings on the fabric: priceless
23:59 rue_house hmm
23:59 rue_house you remember when I went to see rifraf?
23:59 rue_house his water was all from gutters, and his gutters were topped up with leaves?
23:59 rue_house helped him clear them out
23:59 rue_house didn't notice anything about the water tho
