01:42 katsmeow-afk .
01:54 rue_bed oh geez, I forgot about time zones
01:54 rue_bed happy new year kat!
01:54 rue_bed just 10 more years before the opocolypse!
02:21 rue_bed happynewyuears!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
03:22 katsmeow-afk http://metro.co.uk/2014/01/09/scooby-doom-puppy-blows-up-owners-house-after-chewing-through-can-of-deodorant-4257259/
05:19 rue_more happy new year!
06:16 katsmeow-afk you three!
06:16 katsmeow-afk err, too!
06:16 katsmeow-afk why are you still awake?
06:22 katsmeow-afk that puppy story reminds me of another dog that blew up the owner's kitchen by biting thru a spray paint can, painting everything within 2ft black, including the dog and owner, and 5sec later the propellant gas hit the stove pilot lite, detonating the cloud of gas and setting various things on fire (curtains, hair, fabrics, etc)
06:30 katsmeow-afk the owner knew the dog bit on spray cans, and then she opened a cabinet door with a dozen spray cans inside
06:31 katsmeow-afk if it were me, i'd have 100 spray cans around the house, each with proximity detectors, let the dog go to bite one, it gets maced by the can
06:31 katsmeow-afk i bet by the end of the first hour, the biting problem will be cured
06:47 rue_more I cant get to sleep
06:56 katsmeow-afk me either
06:57 rue_more gopnna try again
06:57 katsmeow-afk it's 6:40am here, i gave up, am fixing breakfast
06:58 katsmeow-afk reading Lua manual
06:59 katsmeow-afk i STILL cannot find a list of keywords/reserved words of Lua
07:01 katsmeow-afk it's like "here's a language, here's a few code examples, try to guess the rest of the language words!"
07:02 tsmeow-afk wonders if Tom or rue has used
07:03 tsmeow-afk has also decided it's about time this winter to apply heat to this
07:09 katsmeow-afk It seems that one of the Mars Rover Opportunity's NAND memory banks has been worn out, giving the rover Amnesia.
07:10 katsmeow-afk As you may know, non-volatile NAND memory has a limited number of write cycles that it can endure before it becomes worn out and won't store data properly anymore. Of the seven memory banks on the flash in the Rover, the seventh has issues.
13:29 rue_bed good morning, I dont use lua
13:31 rue_bed I'd be curious as to why they are needed to rewrite the flash 100k times already
15:11 katsmeow-afk http://techcrunch.com/2015/01/01/high-tech-or-hangover-watch-quake-on-an-oscilloscope/
15:25 katsmeow-afk already? the rover was launched to Mars in 2003, it's at least 12 years old, and been taking millions of pics
15:26 katsmeow-afk i'd be asking why the heck it launched with flash memory at all
15:26 katsmeow-afk did they expect nasa would launch another rover to run around and replace all the other lil rover's memory chips as needed?
15:28 katsmeow-afk i sure hope the newest nuke-powered one does not have flash chips in it
15:33 katsmeow-afk in fact, with nuke power, i hope they planned for operating the new rover with UV and IR leds at nite, do do different spectroscopic analysis of the planet, it beats shutting the powerplant down every nite, and they can spare the 10 watts to keep 4+ gigabytes of dram active
15:34 katsmeow-afk they have the whole planet tothemselves, heck, use a printhead to write the data onto the planet using sand grains
15:36 katsmeow-afk it can roam the planet, making huge 3D sand castles of tiny stuff it sees in it's microscope
17:37 rue_more then we'd have to go recover the sand-data
17:40 katsmeow-afk take pics of it with the Mars Orbiter
17:48 rue_more hmmm
17:49 rue_more "but hte checksum is clearly 'stone stone nostone stone'!
17:50 katsmeow-afk "this is too pixelated, can you use smaller sand grains?"
17:50 rue_more :)
17:54 katsmeow-afk the Leelah Alcorn story in the news atm just stuns the hell out of me
17:56 katsmeow-afk my take on it is the parents essentially tell their child they love him because he is male, exactly the same way a man would tell his sexbot,,, the parents would not love the son if he became a daughter, the man would not love his sexbot if it became male
17:58 katsmeow-afk the living being called Joshua/Leelah has no value, only the roleplaying of the initial sex has value
17:59 katsmeow-afk stupid me would initially think the man with the sexbot who becomes a malebot, might say "ok, can you be my butler?"
17:59 katsmeow-afk i see now, the man would likely destroy the bot
18:00 katsmeow-afk and i dunno why
18:01 rue_more hmm
18:01 rue_more but how can a person turn themselfs into a mechanical being in such a way to be accepted (or ignored) by society?
18:01 katsmeow-afk what if your mowerbot told you it wanted to be the MailFetcherBot and TrashTransporterBot from now on? would you destroy it?
18:02 rue_more no, I'd give it a battery upgrade and snow tires
18:02 katsmeow-afk umm, i didn't menthion a person turning themselves into a robot
18:02 Tom_itx are we supposed to accept everything?
18:02 rue_more hmm
18:02 katsmeow-afk Tom, just wondering why it's unacceptable, it's such a small part of what a person is, isn't it?
18:02 rue_more its ok to be rejected?
18:02 rue_more thats an interesting stance
18:03 katsmeow-afk i mean, if the "change" isn't colliding with you, that is
18:04 katsmeow-afk obviously, if your wife changed to male, there's be some issue, but wouldn't the person be the same on a friend basis?
18:04 Tom_itx then why am i even hearing about it if it's not a big deal?
18:04 rue_more maybe it says more about people acceptance to change
18:04 Tom_itx change but why do you expect me to conform to you?
18:04 katsmeow-afk because Lehlah walked out in front of an 18-wheeler to die, because parental rejection
18:04 rue_more someone needs to hear about small deals before they get big
18:05 katsmeow-afk Tom, you have both son and daughter? love both of them?
18:05 katsmeow-afk lets say you do
18:06 katsmeow-afk so you'd have pleasrueable expereince in loving , as a parent,. a male and a female
18:06 rue_more brb
18:06 katsmeow-afk does it really matter which person is which sex?
18:06 katsmeow-afk you aren't *having* sex with eitehr, so that is zero impact on you
18:08 rue_more I'm pretty sure ma would still love me if I said I was becomming a robot
18:08 rue_more maybe the change was not the instigator of the problem
18:09 rue_more maybe even the cause and effect are being seen backwards
18:09 katsmeow-afk in what way will you need to change how you love a person as family and a friend, if that person has a 2% different shape to their skin?
18:09 rue_more or even 100%
18:10 katsmeow-afk rue, isn't it like someone who writes mirc bots starting a war against bots of a different language?
18:10 rue_more not sure
18:11 katsmeow-afk yeas, how to have two persons who are twins want and enjoy killing each other: raise one Jewish and one Moslem, in Isreal and Palistine
18:11 rue_more katsmeow-afk, do you think you would like teo opportunity to design your own body?
18:12 katsmeow-afk yeas, humans are frail, and have odd limitations
18:12 rue_more I was head shopping week before last
18:12 rue_more last week I was hand shopping
18:12 katsmeow-afk the elbows bend only 180 degrees, the finger also
18:12 rue_more jumping the gun I know
18:13 katsmeow-afk the torso isn't extensable, neither are the legs
18:13 rue_more extend-o-matic eh?
18:13 katsmeow-afk the eyes face only one direction, and the head is clustering the brain with too many i/o devices
18:14 katsmeow-afk there's no upgrade path at all
18:14 katsmeow-afk but think of how much the native humans would hate you if you were upgraded, they'd want to make you walk out in front of an 18-wheeler
18:16 katsmeow-afk anyhow, i don't understand the xenophobia
18:17 katsmeow-afk maybe you remember the churches once said that black people have no souls
18:17 katsmeow-afk or that interracial marriage was illegal
18:18 katsmeow-afk some still say getting a flu vaccine will send you to hell
18:18 katsmeow-afk the Catholic church once said red hair was the touch of the devil
18:19 Tom_itx black people are obviously a special breed. at least the media thinks so
18:20 Tom_itx if those shot recently had been any other race it certainly wouldn't make national news for a month
18:20 tsmeow-afk
18:21 Tom_itx if it had been me it probably wouldn't make local news
18:22 Tom_itx case in point.. an aquaintance of mine's brother was beat to death by a cop and nobody new about it
18:22 Tom_itx the cop was later charged with murder of someone else though
18:22 katsmeow-afk there's a n unexplainable disease , noteable in black people, that deleted melatonin production, causing some, if not all, of their skin to be white,, if one of your kids became black, would you love and accept the child less?
18:24 katsmeow-afk fwiw, i agree , that for whatever reason, there's more violence among black people than white, but there are some fine non-white people just as there are white people who hack their parents to deah with chainsaws and axes
18:27 rue_more I wonder what the most common first name is of people guity of murder
18:27 katsmeow-afk it's just that.... if i am not having sex with someone, why the heck would i care what sex they are?
18:27 katsmeow-afk i'd care a lot more about them being nice people
18:28 rue_more katsmeow-afk, have you squirreled away any charts showing the linking of the different sections of the brain?
18:29 rue_more I found one but its not that complete
18:29 katsmeow-afk no
18:29 rue_more I think I"ll get up and putz in the shop for a while
18:30 Tom_itx rue_more did your pumps freeze?
18:30 rue_more no
18:30 rue_more but I was prolly pretty close!
18:31 Tom_itx you should build a safeguard against that
18:31 katsmeow-afk but he knew that 3 yrs ago
18:32 rue_more if the spine does macro expansion, there must be something on the other end of the cable to work otu what macro to call, or to do the operation manually
18:32 rue_more the circulator script hasn't been put on a tstat yet
18:32 katsmeow-afk yeas
18:33 rue_more whent he spine comes into the brain, it splits 3 ways,
18:33 rue_more most of everything goes via frontal cortex
18:33 katsmeow-afk i disagree
18:33 rue_more I'm just describing the diagram
18:34 katsmeow-afk for sheer bandwidth, most goes to the optical center
18:34 katsmeow-afk 99% of the body goes thru the "old brain", the grey matter, nit the outer white matter
18:34 rue_more I meant section wise, there are more sections behind frontal than anything else
18:35 rue_more but its not a really complete one, maybe I'll sit downa nd try to fix it up
18:35 katsmeow-afk why do you care about the *human* brain?
18:35 rue_more here to start somewhere
18:36 rue_more sometimes starting with the most documented thing gives you a good start
18:37 katsmeow-afk well, a start, perhaps, but is it a start in the direction you want to go?
18:39 Tom_itx been having fun with SW
18:39 Tom_itx wish i had something else to draw
18:40 rue_more Tom_itx,
18:40 rue_more design a rice dispencer
18:40 rue_more 1 cup of rice per ... activation
18:42 katsmeow-afk a pipe, two ball valves in it, exactly 1 cup of volume between them, you get 1 cup per valve cycle
18:42 Tom_itx rotary cup holder with a blank area to stop flow
18:42 katsmeow-afk won't work with other valve types, but it's wonderfully simple
18:43 Tom_itx rice dispenser in a jar screwed from the top
18:43 Tom_itx or weigh it
18:43 katsmeow-afk Tom, some concrete pump designs would work
18:44 katsmeow-afk might eventually jamb tho, there's a lot of sliding surface area
18:44 Tom_itx everything fails eventually
18:44 tsmeow-afk
18:44 Tom_itx it's a lesson our creator want's us to realize
18:45 katsmeow-afk umm,, oh
18:47 tsmeow-afk was thinking of a 2" pvc pipe as a horizontal hydraulic ram, but realised it wuld be too heavy and sag b
18:52 rue_shop4 Tom_itx, I was gonna take a small yougart container and make a slider it would sit in, when you push the slider back and forward it would fill the container
18:53 rue_shop4 which is almost the idea
18:53 Tom_itx yeah
18:53 katsmeow-afk a youghert container is a cup?
18:53 Tom_itx it's a rue_cup
18:53 rue_shop4 lots of food machines I'v seen use soft wipers everywhere, to help keep them from jamming
18:54 Tom_itx what's the ladyada site?
18:54 katsmeow-afk well, yeas, but the concrete pump turrent is ~4ft diameter
18:54 Tom_itx found it
19:03 tsmeow-afk rolls cheese puffs down rue's hal
19:05 e_shop4 knows he shouldn't go for this or he will go on a binge a
19:06 rue_shop4 5V-\/\4.7k/\/\----V?------\/\/\10k\/\/\--gnd
19:07 rue_shop4 I think its 3.4V
19:07 Tom_itx 1.x v
19:07 Tom_itx err yeah
19:07 katsmeow-afk ~3.33
19:11 rue_shop4 huh, these cheap breadboadrs from china are,,,, cheap
19:12 tsmeow-afk rolls cheese puffs down the stairs at Tom's p
19:13 rue_shop4 a bunch of the inserts aren't lined up right
19:13 rue_shop4 kat, if you were porting your conciousness over to hardware, what types of safeties/backups might you put in place
19:16 katsmeow-afk full duplication backup on everything, internal locking, the normal extreme data processing safeties
19:20 katsmeow-afk power supply would be critical
19:21 katsmeow-afk unbreakable i/o ports to see/feel/affect/etc the real world
19:22 rue_shop4 segmentation and isolation
19:22 katsmeow-afk chemical detectors in the cooling system,, doesn't matter if it's 72F if it's full of acid
19:23 rue_shop4 its funny, humans nerve systems dont seem that isolated, I'd almost be surprised if you cant hear brain noise at the fingers
19:24 katsmeow-afk yo can detect electrical heart activity at the fingers
19:24 katsmeow-afk the brain is much lower power however
19:24 rue_shop4 heheh
19:25 rue_shop4 PFM
19:25 rue_shop4 which is a really good choice
19:26 rue_shop4 the gain of the signal carriers can be all over the map and you get good signal
19:26 katsmeow-afk pfm?
19:26 rue_shop4 yea, go figure eh?
19:27 katsmeow-afk what is pfm ?
19:27 rue_shop4 pulse freq mod
19:27 katsmeow-afk oh
19:28 tsmeow-afk pondered the mess one can make of any electronics if you flood the containment building wit part1 of a hypergolic mix, and then flowed in p
19:30 rue_shop4 hmm
19:32 rue_shop4 ok, according to the arduino peoples
19:32 rue_shop4 this should work
19:32 katsmeow-afk see, in Star Trek movie, if the vulcan ship with the cargo of red matter is hit with the romulan torpedoes, the result is an inescapable black hole,,,
19:33 katsmeow-afk if the vulcan ship runs into the romulan ship, it creates a black hole,,,,
19:33 rue_more I thought one of them used a black hole as a power source
19:34 katsmeow-afk the romulan ship is capable of warp drive, so it sits there and lets the vulcan ship take it's sweet time on a collision course to run into it and creat the inescapable black hole
19:34 katsmeow-afk STUPID!!
19:34 rue_shop4 er, the romulans use a quantum singulatiry?
19:35 rue_shop4 rusty memory
19:35 katsmeow-afk only the very early models of the birds of prey
19:35 rue_shop4 oh
19:35 rue_shop4 arg, the jukebox has issues
19:36 katsmeow-afk but the movie a couple yrs ago, the ship was from the future and could easily do warp speeds, so they could have escaped being run into, but they just sat there
19:36 katsmeow-afk when they shot at Spock, he warped away to a empty part of space, they warped to follow him
19:37 katsmeow-afk then Spock came out of warp, they did too, Spock turned around and heared right at them
19:37 katsmeow-afk headed
19:37 katsmeow-afk they sat there and let him run into them
19:39 rue_shop4 yay it worked
19:39 rue_shop4 we have SD card access
19:40 tsmeow-afk is so ple
19:40 rue_shop4 shop seems kinda cold
19:40 rue_shop4 oh, I guess its been pretty cold out latley
19:40 katsmeow-afk not enough puters running
19:41 rue_shop4 hmm just 4
19:41 katsmeow-afk each desktop running is 150watts of heat, it adds up :-)
19:43 katsmeow-afk Cage-free California: Starting Jan. 1, all egg-laying hens raised in California must be able to stand up, lie down, turn around and fully extend their wings in humane living conditions.
19:43 katsmeow-afk so male broilers can still be treated like crap?
19:49 katsmeow-afk nasa spots a fire from space : http://a.abcnews.com/images/International/HT_libya1_ml_150101_4x3_992.jpg
19:51 rue_more siberian oil fire?
19:51 katsmeow-afk Libyan
20:05 katsmeow-afk is it just me, or has only 1 show come out since The Big Bang actors got their raise to $1 million per show?
20:08 Tom_itx do they also get DVD royalties etc?
20:08 katsmeow-afk i dunno
20:14 tsmeow-afk ponders di
20:28 katsmeow-afk which reminds me, nukeboxes are once again $60 at Walmart, and no law says you cannot be cooking with two ovens at once
21:04 katsmeow-afk has either of you heard of "the mill cpu" ?
21:04 katsmeow-afk any comments?
21:07 Tom_itx no
21:08 katsmeow-afk they are a company, and have a dozen youtube videos,, lotta hype, i can't get a grip on exactly why they think they have something
22:52 katsmeow-afk yanno,,,,,,,,
22:52 katsmeow-afk there's another way the mill can pull that off, and that's using crossbar switches to build pipelines from start to finish in a loop
22:52 katsmeow-afk you don't issue data and instructions with each clock, you insert them into the top of the pipeline, and thereafter you keep appending functional units to the end of the pipe,, it's not the data drops off the end of the belt,,,,
22:52 katsmeow-afk the pipeline of functional units is x-long, and once the set of instructions has run just so deep into the pipe as it gets lenghened, the previously used functional units, with their output registers, are removed by the crossbar,,,
22:53 katsmeow-afk and that functional unit is then available to append to the front of the pipe as the program flows down the pipe
22:53 katsmeow-afk it's equivalent to reprogramming a fpga in real time as it is running, without losing the data in the functional units
22:53 katsmeow-afk ah hah, i saw thru the bullshit ! :-)
23:01 katsmeow-afk it's as if you had a hardware switch between all the cpu in a propellor chip, which could select the input to that cpu from the output of all the other cpus.... now you set up each cpu to do a task (add, compare, etc),,
23:01 katsmeow-afk you input data to the first one, and after that your program instructions are only switching commands
23:01 katsmeow-afk in a fpga there's 1000 such functional units
23:01 katsmeow-afk by the time you go thru say 100 of them , and have left 20 still connected, those 20 can either save their data to cache or not, and then the fpga is reprogrammed to dissolve them from the pipe
23:02 katsmeow-afk erg
23:02 katsmeow-afk i ran out of functional units in my brain
23:03 katsmeow-afk so the question becomes, how fast can you reprogram a fpga, in part?
23:10 rue_more reading...
23:12 rue_more hmm
23:17 katsmeow-afk i condensed the properties, gimme your email, i';l send it
23:30 tsmeow-afk closes e
23:31 katsmeow-afk well drat, i didn't eat dinner yet, and i think it finished cooking 2 hrs ago
23:31 katsmeow-afk no, it's been 3hrs
23:32 rue_more I was cleaning the house
23:32 rue_more you ahve my mail? I write you all the time, remmeber?
23:33 katsmeow-afk when was the last time? 4 yrs ago?
23:35 rue_more had to be less than that
23:36 katsmeow-afk i searched back to Nov 2013, nothing from you
23:39 katsmeow-afk i note that you have not given it to me here and now either
23:39 tsmeow-afk drops the topic on the floor and kicks it out the
23:45 rue_more no I emailed it to you
23:45 katsmeow-afk there it is, and email from you!
23:46 rue_more odd
23:46 rue_more it looks like all my 2014 emails to you were deleted from existance
23:46 rue_more odd
23:46 rue_more there were about 8
23:47 katsmeow-afk i don't recall getting any
23:47 rue_more you didn't miss anything, most of them were silly questions or asking how you were doing
23:47 rue_more did you dissapear for a whole year?
23:48 katsmeow-afk i feel like i disappeared ever since i tried to move to Fla
23:48 rue_more hmm fever again?
23:48 katsmeow-afk slept a *lot*
23:48 katsmeow-afk absolutely zero energy
23:48 rue_more every so often you get anygry at something I say or dont
23:48 rue_more and go offlien for a while
23:49 katsmeow-afk <ding> you have email
23:49 rue_more rolling physical implementation of a program
23:49 katsmeow-afk yeas
23:49 rue_more I dont have an answer for it tho
23:50 katsmeow-afk but afaik, fpga cannot be reporgrammed as fast as most would desire their program to execute, unless it was possible to throw a LOT of parallelism at it
23:50 rue_more a program usually has a fixed number of variables
23:50 rue_more there are a fixed number of lines of code that maket eh variables interact
23:51 rue_more I suppose you could build a program like a cpu with the instructions being the trigger for functions that are already lain out
23:51 katsmeow-afk your idea about using ram was close to this, i wonder if a crossbar could be made with smaller chips, like ram and latches and such, and outrun a power-per-cost normal cpu
23:54 rue_more I'm gonna try and get some sleep
23:54 rue_more arg, I have to redo the bed first
23:54 katsmeow-afk k, happy dreams
