00:32 rue_shop2 I just fixed a can opener
00:33 rue_shop2 I swear, it was the challange of the problem that made me do it
00:33 rue_shop2 why are some problems to enguaging while others just make me hide?
00:33 rue_shop2 maybe its the difference between things I think I know how to deal with and things I'm lost on the first step of
00:34 rue_shop2 its 10pm
00:34 rue_shop2 I'm gonna weld something
00:54 rue_shop2 hahaha I love this new power cable!
00:55 rue_shop2 I just dialed it up to 100A and cut thru 1/4" steel!
00:55 rue_shop2 (the welder)
01:11 katsmeow-afk umm
01:11 katsmeow-afk cut a line thru, or punched a hole in?
01:18 rue_house cut
01:18 rue_house 1/4" x 1" bar
01:19 rue_house ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
01:19 katsmeow-afk oh, umm, i'd never even tried it
01:19 katsmeow-afk doing it with a plasma torch would be nice tho
01:20 rue_house it took 5-7 seconds to burn it right off
01:20 katsmeow-afk how much rod?
01:20 rue_house hmm, prolly 3/16 rod, about 6"
01:21 rue_house er half, I did it twice
01:21 katsmeow-afk hmm, ok
01:21 rue_house +- playing with the slag
01:22 rue_house ok, I'll work on the 3d printer next
01:23 rue_house I'm gonna need tea
01:23 rue_house I"m ill tho, I'm not sure I should even try to pull an all nighter
01:24 tsmeow-afk is making boxes, and jigs to make b
01:25 rue_house ooo can I see your jigs kat?
01:26 katsmeow-afk they upstairs atm
01:26 rue_house maybe grab some pics next time your up
01:26 tsmeow-afk
02:08 katsmeow-afk took pics

02:48 katsmeow-afk http://designerthinking.com/images/20a_battery_charger/IMG_3208m.jpg
03:48 rue_shop2 how the hell do you start a spot weld like that and have it come out so nice, arg
03:48 katsmeow-afk practice, 110amps, 7018 rod, practice .... which one is good?
03:49 rue_shop2 110!
03:49 rue_shop2 how do you not burn thru!
03:49 katsmeow-afk i have an antique growelbox, haveto crank the amps some to get open-circuit volts
03:50 katsmeow-afk be fast, use a fat rod, start and finish on the heavy metal
03:50 katsmeow-afk in this case, the heavy metal is 1/8
03:50 rue_shop2 hmm, I'll play with it
03:50 rue_shop2 yea, I was burning thru 1/4 with 100A
03:51 rue_shop2 .me goes back to bed
03:51 katsmeow-afk btw, all the IMG_3206m.jpg is not spot welds
03:51 katsmeow-afk i butt welded the .050 to the 1/8
03:54 katsmeow-afk i set the 1/8 thick angle as rails for the corners, inlaid steel plate 1/2 as thick on top of another piece of .050 for spacing, then started the bead on the 1/8, ran over the .050, and back to the 1/8
03:57 katsmeow-afk on IMG_3206m.jpg , if you look at the outside top of the box, the steel tween the rails is inset, looking the the inside of the box you see the inside view of the bottom, which is flush with the rails
03:57 katsmeow-afk ditto IMG_3208m.jpg
04:08 katsmeow-afk http://designerthinking.com/images/20a_battery_charger/IMG_3208c.jpg.JPG <<== you can see the outside of the top view it's inset, then look at the inside of the box, the bottom, it's flush, you can see the weld beads are actually butt welds, the .050 does not overlap the 1/8 angle
04:09 katsmeow-afk i'll leave it to your imagination how i get such nice corners, that's a 1/8 thick x 1/2 wide butt welded to the 1/8 thick by 1/2 wide angle
04:28 katsmeow-afk http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1411
04:35 katsmeow-afk ....
04:53 katsmeow-afk nues phash: some farms in California have been notified they will get NO irrigation water this growing season ,,, if the mature fruit trees die, it will take 10+ years of watering baby trees to get back to production
07:36 katsmeow-afk it's 7:20am
09:17 katsmeow-afk 9am
10:13 katsmeow-afk 10am still 43f outside, sheesh
14:08 rue_house adam789654123 <-- kat?
14:09 rue_house no,
14:09 rue_house wtf
14:51 rue_shop2 katsmeow-afk, did you figure out your helmet battery?
16:50 katsmeow-afk i using the new helmet, looks like the amount of use it gets determines the batery life, the new one, never used, is like 3 yrs old and works fine
16:50 katsmeow-afk when i geta round tuit, i'll refurb the old one, cleaning, new battery, etc
16:51 katsmeow-afk i wanna put a lens heater on it too, so it will stop fogging up when i exhale thru my nose in cold weather
17:17 katsmeow-afk and a chin strap, so i can look waaaaay over something and weld on it's backside
17:20 Tom_itx welding helmet?
17:20 tsmeow-afk
17:20 Tom_itx no solar cells in it?
17:21 Tom_itx is it a fancy one with racing fire all over it?
17:21 katsmeow-afk yeas, which is why i didn't know it has a button cell eitehr, ut rue said someone said someone said it does
17:21 Tom_itx i don't think i can change the cell in mine
17:21 katsmeow-afk no, plain grey, i am not into seeing skulls on everything
17:22 Tom_itx aww
17:22 Tom_itx mine are both grey
17:22 katsmeow-afk sure can, you may need a dremel and a soldering iron, but anything is possible with the right tools
17:22 Tom_itx haven't needed to yet
17:22 Tom_itx the calipers is the one that pisses me off the most
17:22 Tom_itx it's always blinking
17:23 katsmeow-afk i have a calculator with a solar cell, and a button, i got way tired of replacing the button, it's got a AAA in it now, works fine for years longer than the button ever did, i've never chnaged it
17:24 katsmeow-afk yea, applying a bigger button, or a couple N or AAA might be worthwhile, or even a small supercap (if you keep the caliper in a charger cradle)
17:25 katsmeow-afk i think the Chinese give away caliper so cheap to keep their button cell makers in business
17:51 katsmeow-afk sheet, now they are talking sleet and snow here this coming week, like Tuesday, good thing i got 4 breads, and other food for 2 weeks
18:58 Tom_itx walmart bread doesn't last 2 wks
19:19 katsmeow-afk the "whole wheat" does if you use the all natural outside cooling system available for free this time of year
19:26 katsmeow-afk "there's this man harrassing me,,, well, he started it all about 5 minutes ago, he got blood on my tires and then started loudly bitching about me running him over,,, yeas, i can wait a few minutes for a civil servant to arrive and take a statement."
20:07 Tom_itx my god the wind really picked up here
20:10 tsmeow-afk tosses Tom some golden slippers so he can return
20:15 Tom_itx just hope the snow stays north of me
20:16 katsmeow-afk hehe
20:17 katsmeow-afk there's come cold building a push south in Canadia now
20:17 Tom_itx they're welcome to keep it
20:18 katsmeow-afk yeas, if rue would build some windmills on the border from ocean toocean, they could slow down the cold some, and sell us cheap power
20:18 katsmeow-afk in addition tot he Quebec hydro, i mean
20:19 katsmeow-afk Monday nite, Tueseday morning, you should be backto slick icey roads there
20:20 katsmeow-afk from Monday nite to Thorsday moning, we may not break above freezing, according to the meatyurologists
20:26 katsmeow-afk i noticed something today, when i buy chocolate milk, at least one human stops me eitehr at the grocery or at Home Depot, to say hi, chat about the weather, the birds in the store, or tomatoe plants
20:26 katsmeow-afk and then i am so nervous i am physically ill when i get home
20:27 katsmeow-afk the getting ill part is normal when being around humans tho, what concerns me is the chocolate milk
20:27 katsmeow-afk there's no way the poeple at Home Depot know i just bought some and it's in the truck or car
20:28 Tom_itx so keep it short
20:28 tsmeow-afk wonders if Tom saw the box or jig
20:28 katsmeow-afk short milk?
20:29 Tom_itx the home depot conversation
20:29 katsmeow-afk but a conversation that does not involve them taking care of me is so rare
20:30 Tom_itx you don't like it?
20:30 katsmeow-afk humans believe i cannot open doors, make it out to me car, push a buggy, lift a lightbulb, etc
20:30 katsmeow-afk i hate the attempted patronising condescending converations, i shut them down asap
20:31 katsmeow-afk today it was a employye thanking me for advice on growning things in 5 gallon buckets
20:31 Tom_itx maybe they were just being appreciative
20:31 katsmeow-afk she said all her bucket plats gave wonderful food, better than the in-ground plants
20:31 Tom_itx most ppl i talk to don't have a clue about gardening
20:31 katsmeow-afk they were, it was nice
20:32 katsmeow-afk we discussed planting in general, soilless planting, etc
20:32 katsmeow-afk very rare conversation
20:32 Tom_itx maybe you'll run into them again
20:33 katsmeow-afk and at Walmart, the deaf greeter and i had a short discussion about the wild birds that got into in the store
20:34 katsmeow-afk those things do not happen when i do not buy chocolate milk, i dunno why
20:34 Tom_itx hmm
20:34 katsmeow-afk yeas
20:36 katsmeow-afk "next up, a Steven King movie about buying chocolate milk in a small town..."
20:36 Tom_itx naw, cherish those momemts... i don't get that many of em either
20:37 katsmeow-afk i guess i am, they are still on my mind
20:42 katsmeow-afk think there will ever be 1024-bit computers?
20:43 katsmeow-afk 4,8,16,32,64,..............,1024 ?
20:43 katsmeow-afk oops, left out the 24 and 36bit machines
20:44 katsmeow-afk there's some 56bit and 128bit math processors
20:45 katsmeow-afk technically, harddrives are 24/48bit, dealing in 512/1024 byte sectors
20:45 Tom_itx no idea
20:46 Tom_itx could be i suppose
20:56 katsmeow-afk i got no sleep last nite, i think i will tonite
20:57 Tom_itx i noticed
20:57 katsmeow-afk i hope i wasn't too loud
20:59 Tom_itx naw
20:59 katsmeow-afk k :-)
21:02 katsmeow-afk i am pondring those 1200 slow memory chips from the cableboxes, if i pysically arrange them as 128bytes wide ram, that's simultaneously a screen line of chars and equals 1024 bits wide, my current screen setting
21:03 katsmeow-afk the rams are 128k/256k, which would give me a total of 16/32 megabytes
21:05 katsmeow-afk i could chop it into banks, so i get several screen banks for RGB and a buffer, a high level program (basic, prolly) ram bank, a vliw bank of machine code, and the remaining is still pretty respectable for a C64
21:08 katsmeow-afk and i have enough of those free rams to do 8 computers worth,, and it's really slow sdram, 50/60/70ns , so using it in a superwide parallel way will offset some of that dead slowness
21:09 katsmeow-afk tis just a think, i have them, and hate to see them grow old while being unused
21:10 katsmeow-afk i saved them from being melted as scrap metal, not so i could landfill them myself
21:13 Tom_itx Strong winds are causing havok across the state.
21:13 Tom_itx Powerlines have been knocked down along the I-135 corridor near Salina. Kansas Highway Patrol Public Information Officer for North-Central Kansas, Trooper Ben Gardner says that also sparked three grass fires along the interstate.
21:13 Tom_itx The powerlines forced closure of the interstate from the Schilling to Waterwell exits as crews work to clear the line off of the roadway. Around 1800 people are without power in Saline County.
21:14 Tom_itx Winds are making traffic very difficult. Trooper Gardner recommends caution for drivers.
21:14 katsmeow-afk Salina is like 2 gas stations and a couple houses, surrounded as far as can see by open farmland (a few have windmills out there!)
21:15 Tom_itx it's a fair size but not _big_
21:15 katsmeow-afk must have been a main trunk powerline
21:16 Tom_itx shortly after that, it arrived here :)
21:16 katsmeow-afk there's a steep temperature gradient there
21:17 Tom_itx 42° F
21:17 Tom_itx Mon night 6
21:18 katsmeow-afk oo, Karl Slym, managing director of Tata Motors Ltd, killed self in highdive off hotel balcony, their subsubsubcompacts to sell for under $1000 in the usa didn't work out
21:19 katsmeow-afk Google Inc said on Sunday it had agreed to acquire privately held artificial intelligence company DeepMind Technologies Ltd. ... $400 million
21:23 katsmeow-afk you got snow mid-state above you
21:23 Tom_itx yeah i saw that
21:23 Tom_itx alot of times it will stall just above us
21:24 katsmeow-afk this won't
21:25 katsmeow-afk the front north of you now is supposed to be south of Tx Monday afternoon, and out intot he gulf of mexico
21:25 Tom_itx no probably not. based on the sudden wind
21:26 tsmeow-afk can see the subzero push that started moving earlier today in central Can
21:29 katsmeow-afk Tom, you see the box urls? any feedback to offer?
21:29 Tom_itx missed that i guess
21:30 katsmeow-afk http://designerthinking.com/images/20a_battery_charger/IMG_3201m.jpg , IMG_3203m.jpg , IMG_3204m.jpg , IMG_3205m.jpg , IMG_3206m.jpg , IMG_3207m.jpg , IMG_3208m.jpg , IMG_3208c.jpg.JPG
21:31 katsmeow-afk yeas, no typo, the url on the last one is http://designerthinking.com/images/20a_battery_charger/IMG_3208c.jpg.JPG
21:32 katsmeow-afk i butt welded the .050 to the 1/8
21:32 katsmeow-afk i set the 1/8 thick angle as rails for the corners, inlaid steel plate 1/2 as thick on top of another piece of .050 for spacing, then started the bead on the 1/8, ran over the .050, and back to the 1/8
21:32 katsmeow-afk on IMG_3206m.jpg , if you look at the outside top of the box, the steel tween the rails is inset, looking the the inside of the box you see the inside view of the bottom, which is flush with the rails
21:32 katsmeow-afk ditto IMG_3208m.jpg
21:33 katsmeow-afk i'll leave it to your imagination how i get such nice corners, that's a 1/8 thick x 1/2 wide butt welded to the 1/8 thick by 1/2 wide angle
21:35 Tom_itx looks nice
21:35 katsmeow-afk sturdy too, i'll prolly paint it something besides black when done
21:36 katsmeow-afk i wasn't 100% sure how it would turn out, that's the first complete frame, i wanted to do the small one before i did the sides onthe bigger one
21:54 katsmeow-afk going to go put my feets up, i may fall asleep for a while
22:05 rue_shop2 watch screwdrivers, they prolly knurl them with a pinch knurler of some sort eh?
22:10 Tom_itx huh?
22:10 Tom_itx i need a really tiny phillips
22:11 Tom_itx i got small ones
22:12 Tom_itx they got them all glued too
22:12 Tom_itx pissin me off
22:15 Tom_itx it's got at least 2 mirrors
22:32 Tom_itx 60mph wind gusts
22:32 Tom_itx gnite
23:02 rue_shop2 you wont loose power till it hits 80
