16:39 Tom_itx err maybe that was you
16:39 any65853467 maybe i am an an idiot?
16:40 any65853467 i did get sprockets for the motors in the main today, i was examining them, and i intend to wrap chain around them

19:33 katsmeow but if i make it out of galvanised steel, i can cut the edges, bend them down, then overlap and rivet as needed for strength, and use plain solder to seal them airtight, and they should be good for 400F ?
19:33 katsmeow at least till the galvaniseing peels off the steel

19:42 katsmeow the OD of the collar part of the sprocket is 0.970 , which could be turned down to 0.945/24mm , and the bearing put on the sprocket, instead of the shaft, at much increased bearing cost :-/
19:44 katsmeow the bearings i ordered got stuck on Tampa over 12 hrs, and so missed being delivered here till Monday

21:23 Lola8088 whaddid I say about earthquakes?!? hey! Hey!
21:58 katsmeow Tom, pics uploading now, some with circles and arrows and a description on each one explaining what each one was to be used as evidence against us..... i mean for us, for machining
21:59 katsmeow http://designerthinking.com/B&S_starter/B&S_starter.html

22:03 Tom_itx .310 from the edge of the housing to the base of the bearing seat?
22:03 katsmeow I DIDN'T DO IT
22:03 katsmeow what?
22:04 katsmeow from the top edge of the housing to the bottom of the bearing seat on the shaft, yeassir
22:04 Tom_itx can the plate be that low as well?
22:05 katsmeow the next pic shows it: that .310 is nearly exact thickness of the R8
22:05 katsmeow junda hasto be that low to hold the bearing
22:05 katsmeow err
22:05 katsmeow kinda hasto be that low to hold the bearing
22:05 katsmeow (got my sleeve hung in a sprocket)
22:05 Tom_itx better than a body part
22:06 katsmeow so the top of the bearing is level with the top of the housing
22:06 katsmeow the bottom of the bearing clears the windings
22:06 Tom_itx does the bearing need a shoulder to press against?
22:06 Tom_itx can it be a thru hole?
22:07 katsmeow yeas, but don't go below the bottom of the bearing, it clears the windings, but only by .030 or so
22:07 Tom_itx the top side
22:08 katsmeow yeas
22:08 katsmeow plain straight thru hole
22:08 Tom_itx what holds the endbell in the housing?
22:08 katsmeow the bearing can't go anywhere in the end bell, it sits against the shaft bushing as shown, and the sprocket (fastened to the shaft) as shown
22:08 katsmeow see bottom two pics
22:09 Tom_itx are those threaded?
22:09 katsmeow note the OD of the bell, and the two bolt holes which go thru the bell
22:09 katsmeow they are threaded, i am not asking you to
22:09 Tom_itx what thread?
22:10 katsmeow they are like 10-24, but as you likely are not making the mounting ears too, i can make the ears and apply new bolts and nuts
22:11 Tom_itx you need ears?
22:11 Tom_itx or just a round bell
22:11 katsmeow i don't have the mounting down pat yet
22:11 katsmeow round, flat, plain hole in center,,, the bolt holes drilled thru or center-dinged would be nice
22:14 Tom_itx how much lip is there that seats inside the housing?
22:15 katsmeow 0.075 , but you can go the whole .310 thickness of the bearing if you like
22:15 katsmeow be better for me if you did, actually
22:16 Tom_itx k
22:17 katsmeow if you used 3/8 plate, 3" dia, and turned .310 off the 3/8 to make the lip, the numbers add up nicely to hold the bearing,, or thereabouts
22:19 katsmeow |
22:19 katsmeow |
22:19 katsmeow _|
22:19 katsmeow |
22:19 katsmeow or something like that
22:20 katsmeow can you hold something like that in your lathe?
22:21 katsmeow it's not a critical part, the mill may work, even with .0005 off everywhere
22:21 katsmeow but it's sorta thick for your mill, i suspect
22:24 katsmeow on the pic 4 from the top, i was going to drill a piece of 1/2 rod to make a bushing , to fill the space tween the sprocket and the necked-down shaft there,, as you can see from pic 3, it will be a short bushing
22:25 katsmeow i can nick the shaft for a key easy enough, won't be perfect, but it's do-able,, the set/grub screws land on the 1/2 dia portion of the shaft
22:26 katsmeow some creative adjustments, and lite hammer to press the parts together
22:27 katsmeow extended thru bolts to allow mounting ears at each end
22:28 katsmeow if this makes a big difference, i will want to try an end bell for the other end, but the 4 brush holders are on that endbell
22:29 katsmeow there's room for a ball bearing there too, but it may be *real* creative to make an aftermarket metal bearing holder there,, i won't know till i get the bearings monday
22:29 katsmeow i have replaced sleeve with ball bearings before, i know it can be done
22:32 Tom_itx my mill won't hold .0005
22:33 katsmeow this motor isn't for precision machining, it's for moving a robot
22:33 tsmeow willleave it up to you how to mak
22:33 Tom_itx wouldn't leave much lip to hold if turned in a lathe to turn the step
22:34 katsmeow to me, it's a 3/8 disk with a hole in the middle, a lip on the OD, and two bolt holes
22:34 Tom_itx yup
22:34 katsmeow hold it inside the bearing hole to turn the OD ?
22:35 katsmeow or, this is possible, make a no-lip 1/4 plate with the hole, and a 3" 1/8 thick to apply to it as the lip (adds up to 3/8 also)
22:36 katsmeow i can pin/rivet/bolt the two together, if that's easier on you
22:36 katsmeow ==============================

22:37 katsmeow (just imagine the holes lined up)
22:41 rue_house Lola8088, now?
22:41 Tom_itx ok so i found my pile of R8 bearings including one precision abec 7 one that's thin
22:41 rue_house :)
22:42 katsmeow abec 7 ? thin?
22:42 Lola8088 Now. :)
22:42 rue_house ok ok
22:43 Lola8088 it's ready
22:43 katsmeow 0 results found for "abec 7" "R8"
22:44 Tom_itx yeah i haven't opened it
22:44 Tom_itx abec 7 is the grade
22:44 Tom_itx very precision
22:44 katsmeow they seem to be popular on skateboards, are they real precision?
22:45 Tom_itx this was for a 2 cycle race engine
22:45 katsmeow under $1 each, free s&h
22:45 Tom_itx 1/4" thin
22:45 katsmeow not for 1/2 shafts eitehr
22:46 Tom_itx 1.125 x .500
22:46 Tom_itx od id
22:46 katsmeow o
22:46 Tom_itx barden precicion
22:46 Tom_itx the others are just shit bearings
22:47 Tom_itx .309 x 1.125 x .500
22:47 katsmeow i see, $10 each bearing
22:48 Tom_itx no idea where i got these
22:48 katsmeow i bought rubber seals on mine, that's all the splurging i was going to do on them
22:48 Tom_itx MRC R8 Ff
22:49 katsmeow the shaft is like .497 , the bearing ID is .501 , so you see how accurate i am already (needs a lil adjusting.. .0015 shims)
22:50 katsmeow this is a "see if it works better, and is worth doing more of" , and i am betting it's WAY better than the sleeves in it oem
22:51 Tom_itx 1.124 x .499 actual
22:51 Tom_itx .310
22:51 katsmeow use the cheap R8 , it's what i will be installing
22:52 Tom_itx S3KDD
22:52 Tom_itx are the others
22:52 katsmeow i ordered some R6 for the other end
22:52 Tom_itx i bet these were out of the original 2 stroke housing
22:53 Tom_itx .875 x .375 x .278
22:53 katsmeow if i am really lucky, the R6 will fit inside the brace-support tween the bushing and the brush assy part of the end bell
22:54 Tom_itx so could i start with some rough 3" round bar>
22:54 Tom_itx ?
22:54 Tom_itx turn the lip and bore a hole
22:54 katsmeow umm, sure, if you wanna slick a 3/8 off it?
22:54 katsmeow slice
22:54 Tom_itx doubt i have any 3"
22:54 Tom_itx may have to get some
22:56 tsmeow would use plate, to save parting off the round over an inch
22:56 katsmeow that sounds iffy, troubleprone
22:56 katsmeow and if you bandsaw it off, it would haveto be face-turned
22:56 katsmeow sounds like more work to start with a round than a plate
22:57 katsmeow maybe i am thinking it wrong tho
23:09 katsmeow Delivery:
23:09 katsmeow Estimated between Wed. Nov. 6 and Tue. Dec. 3
23:09 katsmeow that's a hell of a spread
23:13 tsmeow wonders if Tom has a price estimate on this yet , qty 1 and q
23:13 katsmeow qty 8
23:19 Tom_itx 8?!!
23:20 katsmeow hence the plan to make them as simple as possible
23:20 katsmeow i can get the motors for ~$1 each, when they are available
23:20 Tom_itx trying to find render in solidworks
23:21 katsmeow new sell for $30 on ebay, i figure with ball bearings for constant-duty robot use, we could agree on a profit margin and other assy parts somewhere
23:21 katsmeow couplings, tach additions, etc,, i dunno, just thinking out loud
23:22 katsmeow i do have more than 8 such motors tho, and have a use for 4
23:22 katsmeow if the 4 work well, then praps the otehr 4 (and more) will sell ?
23:22 katsmeow or ic an keep using more and more of them
23:23 Tom_itx i checked and i don't have any plate that large atm
23:23 Tom_itx i got some .500 but not that big
23:23 Tom_itx oh i take that back
23:23 tsmeow
23:23 Tom_itx i got one piece but i dunno how thick it was
23:23 Tom_itx didn't check
23:23 Tom_itx at least .500
23:24 Tom_itx maybe 1.5x that
23:24 katsmeow that's heavy stuff
23:24 Tom_itx for my mill bed
23:24 Tom_itx i made one from 1"
23:25 katsmeow you know that heavy aluminum square stock with a fancy X cross-section? used for making mills, etc? i can get 1 ft long pieces for cheap if you need some,, i dunno the cost, i didn't ask or buy any
23:26 Tom_itx what diameter are the screw holes?
23:26 Tom_itx if i were to drill them
23:27 katsmeow .150 with the thread, .215 bored thru unthreaded
23:28 Tom_itx that doesn't make sense
23:28 Tom_itx the unthreaded should be smaller
23:29 katsmeow no, the unbored has no threads sticking out ino the hole
23:29 katsmeow err
23:29 katsmeow no, the unthreaded has no threads sticking out ino the hole
23:29 katsmeow anyhow, i just verified, i can run a 1/4 allthread down where the oem has 10-24 bolt thru
23:29 katsmeow again, not critical stuff
23:30 katsmeow or i can run 10-24 or 12-whatever
23:31 katsmeow but if you drill to clear 10-24, i can always overdrill it to take #12 or 1/4
23:33 tsmeow is wondering how Riff's Foxy would work if the arm motors were replaced with these mo
23:36 Tom_itx http://tom-itx.dyndns.org:81/~webpage/temp/Kat/Bellhousing.jpg
23:36 katsmeow this looks a lot like what someone has been scrapping out lately : http://www.ebay.com/itm/190943910341
23:37 katsmeow very nice, Tom
23:38 katsmeow 1/2 thick is overkill, but i don't see a problem with it
23:39 katsmeow what do you do with the solidworks pic once you have done it?
23:39 Tom_itx http://tom-itx.dyndns.org:81/~webpage/temp/Kat/Bellhousing1.jpg
23:39 Tom_itx nothing
23:39 Tom_itx i just wanted to play with solidworks
23:39 Tom_itx i could export it to my cad cam
23:39 katsmeow ah
23:41 katsmeow before you make more than one, i should try one to verify it works irl, unless you wanna play with your own mower starter there
23:42 katsmeow if you see a way to make it even simpler, say so
23:42 katsmeow oh,,
23:42 katsmeow hmm
23:43 katsmeow ___________
23:43 katsmeow . /
23:43 katsmeow |_________
23:43 katsmeow +++++
23:43 katsmeow er======
23:44 katsmeow what i am trying to draw is a slight taper to the dia so it drops into the housing easier, but still fits snug when down on the lip
23:44 katsmeow so it doesn't need pressing in the entire 3/8
23:45 katsmeow but in aluminum, i can do that in 2 minutes with a file
23:46 Tom_itx http://tom-itx.dyndns.org:81/~webpage/temp/Kat/Bellhousing2.jpg
23:46 Tom_itx flange for bearing
23:47 katsmeow is that in the 1/2 thick stuff?
23:47 Tom_itx 375
23:47 Tom_itx .065 shoulder
23:47 katsmeow ok, the bearing is .310 , that works too
23:47 katsmeow it's more work tho
23:47 Tom_itx i'm just playing
23:48 katsmeow didja see what i said about the taper?
23:48 katsmeow just 20thou or so, you know what i mean
23:48 Tom_itx yeah
23:48 Tom_itx bedd
23:49 katsmeow pic #4 shows the sprocket down on the bearing, and the clearance for the shoulder
23:50 katsmeow the OD of the sprocket shoulder there is .0972
23:50 katsmeow err
23:50 katsmeow the OD of the sprocket shoulder there is .972
23:51 katsmeow so the bearing lip can be .077 tall before it scrapes on the sprocket
23:54 katsmeow the ID of the outer race is .80 , or .06 thick on my R8's, so a lip of even .03 would work,, or how ever you want to do it
