02:17 katsmeow-afk This article is about the wreckage of 1920 between Chevrolet and O'Donnell. Crashes such as this caused designers to look into preventive maintenance software to ensure race cars in the future would be as safe as possible for drivers and mechanics alike.
02:17 katsmeow-afk 1920's software
03:59 rue_shop http://reprap.org/wiki/Prusa_Build_Manual
04:00 rue_shop3 katsmeow-afk do you have a registry cleaner for '98?
07:04 katsmeow-afk [23:57] <katsmeow-afk> [23:21] <katsmeow-afk> rue, i have nothing for win98, i never put that trash on my puter, i went dos-win3.1-win95B-winxpee
07:04 katsmeow-afk [23:57] <katsmeow-afk> [23:22] <katsmeow-afk> if you are running win98, i STRONGLY suggest you lose it, because the fdisk-format situation was never fixed
07:06 katsmeow-afk abc news is reporting the colorado cops have defused all the bobby traps, i guess so bobby can get into the apartment to defuse the booby traps
13:14 katsmeow-afk .
13:31 katsmeow-afk well, after the movie shootings, there's no more forest fires
13:32 katsmeow-afk seems there's nothing going on in Europe too
15:21 Tom_itx velocity = position units per second
15:21 Tom_itx there are 48 of them per revolution
15:21 Tom_itx i want an output of r p m
15:21 Tom_itx what would the scale factor be?
15:22 Tom_itx it seems to low to divide it by 60
15:23 Tom_itx i tried a factor of 60 which would be mul by 60
15:23 Tom_itx it may be close but it still doesn't seem quite right
15:39 katsmeow-afk i don't understand the question: with 48 teeth you have 48 ticks per minute per rpm, but this has nothing to do wtih velocity because you didn't deal with the circumference
15:39 Tom_itx it's an encoder input
15:40 Tom_itx it's how they calculate it
15:40 Tom_itx 48 ticks per rev yes
15:40 Tom_itx and they return ticks per second
15:41 katsmeow-afk i still dunno the question
15:42 katsmeow-afk at one rpm, you have 0.8 ticks per sec with 48 teeth
15:43 Tom_itx i need a scale factor to enter for an output
15:43 Tom_itx i'm trying to display the rpm
15:43 katsmeow-afk but i don't know what you are multiplying, what the sale is applying to, or it's terms
15:43 Tom_itx when i finish here i'll have more time to explain
15:44 katsmeow-afk ok, i'll let you get back to that
15:44 Tom_itx i was working on it early this morning
15:44 Tom_itx and left it for a while
15:45 katsmeow-afk http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/comment.html?entrynum=2157
15:46 Tom_itx i know about that first hand
15:47 katsmeow-afk i was only giving you what you know, in written online terms
15:47 Tom_itx the grain producing area is in trouble
15:47 katsmeow-afk i have been worried about it for years, actually
15:48 Tom_itx it will be like africa where they find fish fossils in the desert
15:48 katsmeow-afk Europe's situation is the reverse, too much rain
15:48 katsmeow-afk food exports from usa and Europe have ben getting canceled
15:49 Tom_itx http://www.linuxcnc.org/docs/html/drivers/hostmot2.html#_encoder
15:49 Tom_itx velocity
15:50 Tom_itx http://www.linuxcnc.org/docs/html/hal/pyvcp_examples.html
15:50 Tom_itx near the bottom is a spindle RPM indicator
15:50 Tom_itx that's what i'm doing
15:51 Tom_itx partial code is above it
15:51 Tom_itx not nearly all of it
15:51 Tom_itx http://www.linuxcnc.org/docs/html/man/man9/scale.9.html
15:51 Tom_itx using that between the encoder and the output
15:52 Tom_itx i need to adjust the gain
15:52 Tom_itx i can set the spedometer numbers to anything
15:52 Tom_itx i have them max at 3000 right now iirc
15:53 katsmeow-afk but scale against what?
15:53 Tom_itx well there's where i'm scratching my butt
15:53 katsmeow-afk if it is expecting ticks per year, you'd have a different scale than if it wants ticks per day
15:53 Tom_itx the counts per rev against the scale displayed?
15:53 Tom_itx ticks per minuite
15:54 Tom_itx i get per second from the function as it indicates
15:54 katsmeow-afk ticks per minute at what revolutions/minute?
15:54 Tom_itx i want to convert it to rpm
15:54 Tom_itx i'm kinda stuck in the understanding
15:54 katsmeow-afk what you have now is 0.8 ticks vs a 60 tick wheel
15:55 Tom_itx 48 tick wheel
15:55 katsmeow-afk 48/60 = 0.8
15:55 Tom_itx i tried that too and it seemed way too slow
15:56 Tom_itx i need to read some more i think
15:56 Tom_itx there are lots of factors i may not be aware of
16:06 Tom_itx there may be some scale on the display i'm missing or something
17:46 rue_shop odometer tuning?
17:51 Tom_itx wanna help?
17:52 Tom_itx digital meter says 1.99 Khz. there are 48 slots. display shows ~500 rpm with a gain factor of 12.5
17:52 Tom_itx i need to adjust the gain until the frequency and rpm match
17:53 Tom_itx i don't know if some of the software accounts for the 48 slots or not. it's supposed to
17:53 Tom_itx wouldn't 1.99 khz be about 2000 rpm?
17:53 rue_shop can I get back to ya, I'm building a reprap
17:53 Tom_itx no
17:53 Tom_itx i need it now
17:53 Tom_itx !
17:53 Tom_itx u owe me
17:53 rue_shop 2khz
17:53 Tom_itx :)
17:53 Tom_itx yes
17:54 Tom_itx into rpm
17:54 Tom_itx what would that be?
17:54 rue_shop 48 slots
17:54 Tom_itx i can adjust it myself
17:54 Tom_itx let's not worry about slots
17:54 Tom_itx just khz to rpm
17:54 rue_shop 120kslots/min
17:54 rue_shop 120k/48rev/min
17:55 rue_shop 2500rpm
17:55 Tom_itx what rpm do you think 2khz /48 would be?
17:55 Tom_itx that's about what i guestimated
17:55 rue_shop 2kslots/sec
17:55 rue_shop convert to mins *60
17:56 rue_shop 120kslots/min
17:56 rue_shop divide by slots/rev
17:56 rue_shop is 2500 rev/min
17:56 Tom_itx ok
17:56 Tom_itx so i'll adjust until i get 2500
17:56 rue_shop where is this gain factor?
17:56 Tom_itx in software
17:56 Tom_itx it's a function
17:57 Tom_itx http://www.linuxcnc.org/docs/html/man/man9/scale.9.html
17:57 Tom_itx see?
17:57 rue_shop hmm, 2500rpm/12.5 is 200
17:57 Tom_itx but it shows 500 on the scale
17:57 Tom_itx the scale is to 3000
17:57 Tom_itx i need to increase that to 5000
17:58 Tom_itx which i'm doing right now
17:58 rue_shop put a known-rpm induction motor on the spindle and calibrate to that
17:58 rue_shop like a 3600
17:58 rue_shop or 1800
17:58 rue_shop use a drill chuck
17:58 rue_shop small fan motor
17:58 rue_shop wait
17:58 Tom_itx i have a meter on it displaying hz
17:59 rue_shop there is a belt ratio in there too right?
17:59 Tom_itx there are 48 slots
17:59 Tom_itx no
17:59 Tom_itx no ratio
17:59 rue_shop ok
17:59 Tom_itx direct drive
17:59 Tom_itx on the spindle
17:59 Tom_itx haha
18:00 Tom_itx now i enter the gain at 60 and it's dead on
18:00 Tom_itx i had stuff screwed up before
18:00 Tom_itx and 60 makes sense
18:00 Tom_itx because the first encoder function takes care of the encoder counts
18:01 Tom_itx Estimated encoder velocity in position units per second
18:01 Tom_itx you enter the encoder resolution as a parameter to it
18:01 Tom_itx i think it's really close now
18:01 Tom_itx i knew i just needed to walk away for a while
18:14 rue_shop ok
18:15 Tom_itx rue_shop, it must be pretty close because when i did the calculations for my pulley when i machined it, i figured it would top out at around 5500 rpm and that's exactly where it goes to on the scale now
18:15 rue_shop :)
18:15 Tom_itx now i can adjust feedrates closer to what they should be
18:16 Tom_itx rue_shop, what did they screw up on your kit?
18:16 Tom_itx next it a numeric display just below the dial
18:17 tsmeow-afk ponders leaning a Segway over enough to tie it's handle to the grab rails in a revolving door, and switching i
18:20 Tom_itx katsmeow-afk i must have had stuff messed up when we went over it
18:20 katsmeow-afk oh
18:20 Tom_itx i put the numbers back in after fixing some code lines and they were right
18:20 Tom_itx the encoder does the division for the disk
18:20 Tom_itx the scale function does the conversion from seconds to min
18:20 katsmeow-afk well, i was gonna suggest putting a tach on it, then comparing that to what the display said, and figuring the divisor based on that
18:21 katsmeow-afk oh, ok
18:21 Tom_itx made it easier
18:21 Tom_itx thanks
18:21 Tom_itx the encoder put out in units per second
18:21 Tom_itx so i knew i needed to scale that
18:21 Tom_itx 50mhz sample rate
18:22 Tom_itx so it should be able to keep up
18:22 katsmeow-afk that's aweful fast for a tach
18:22 Tom_itx it's part of the board firmware
18:22 katsmeow-afk can the cpu even keep up with the math at 50Mhz, and still do anything useful?
18:22 Tom_itx the board does it
18:22 katsmeow-afk k
18:22 Tom_itx in the xilinx fpga
18:23 Tom_itx that's the nice thing about having these boards
18:23 Tom_itx you can get higher rates when you need them
18:23 Tom_itx like the 40000 counts per inch on the steppers
18:24 tsmeow-afk
18:24 Tom_itx now to get a numeric display below it
18:24 Tom_itx then maybe i'll take a snapshot of it and show you
18:24 Tom_itx rue_house
18:25 Tom_itx how do you take a screen shot in linux?
18:25 Tom_itx same as winders?
18:25 Tom_itx apparently so :)
18:28 Tom_itx http://tom-itx.dyndns.org:81/~webpage/cnc/cnc_files/Sherline_Mill.png
18:28 Tom_itx there
18:29 Tom_itx the colors are options for the display function too
18:29 Tom_itx just an added touch :)
18:30 katsmeow-afk yano, at 4000rpm the slightest imbalance on the spindle will cause it to bend in that direction, which is how i got a bent drill press sprindle
18:30 Tom_itx yeah
18:30 Tom_itx it's really close i think
18:31 katsmeow-afk this drill press was made with a tapered fit tot he chuck, and someone added some retaining hardware, but the thing keeps working loose, and it prolly went <thunk> "oo, now i am off balance!" <self destruct>
18:32 Tom_itx yeah
18:32 Tom_itx i need to go thru the spindle on my drill press too
18:32 Tom_itx it's kinda crappy
18:33 Tom_itx but it's better than the old old buffalo one i had that was probably made in the 40's or earlier
18:33 katsmeow-afk this was made in the 70's, Sears,, it ran smooth right up till it didn't
18:33 Tom_itx you 2 are an invaluable asset.
18:34 Tom_itx that is when rue stays around
18:34 Tom_itx :)
18:34 katsmeow-afk my lil benchtop brill press also lost it's chuck every timei used it, i finally ttok a day off and brazed the chuck to the spindle, it's real stable now
18:34 katsmeow-afk i ned to make a real mill of some sort
18:35 Tom_itx i wish this was cast iron/steel
18:35 Tom_itx and 3x the size
18:35 tsmeow-afk
18:36 Tom_itx i'll show you what this code looks like
18:36 Tom_itx pulling it from 3 different files
18:37 katsmeow-afk what's it written in?

18:38 Tom_itx python i think
18:39 Tom_itx they use several things i believe
18:39 katsmeow-afk but your script you just listed is xml
18:39 Tom_itx that too
18:39 Tom_itx it uses xml as well

18:39 Tom_itx is another one
18:39 Tom_itx i haven't tried that yet

21:13 Tom_itx i haven't done alot lately

22:10 Tom_itx you take those things apart and trade em?
22:11 katsmeow-afk i got a chance to salvage what i could from some on their way to be *melted* down, i don't expect another chance to get so many free spare parts or working modules ever again
22:12 Tom_itx yeah
22:12 katsmeow-afk i got some 60 Tektronix plugins, plus pounds of parts, out of that deal,, it's like a 1 in 3 lifetimes deal
22:13 katsmeow-afk so yeas, i didn't need them all, i can trade up for things
22:13 katsmeow-afk the plastic pieces, this guy may or may not need more, but he is willing to give good equipment in trade, and otehrs may be willing to buy for cash
22:14 katsmeow-afk i could maybe sell more of everything in that pic
22:15 Tom_itx i wonder why they are so popular
22:15 katsmeow-afk the aluminum pieces would be easy on a cnc mill, but still wouldn't be cheap, i expect, made out of a 12x2.5x0.25 aluminum
22:15 katsmeow-afk the equipment was *very* good quality stuff, and a good bit of it can be repaired with common parts
22:16 katsmeow-afk the newer stuff, and the very high freq stuff, has custom electronics
22:16 katsmeow-afk but all has the service, repair, maint, and operator manuals still available
22:17 katsmeow-afk and $120 for a 100Mhz 4 channel oscope with dual timebase isn't something to sneeze at
22:17 katsmeow-afk i maen REAL 4 channel, not those scopes that count the trigger chanenls as a display channel
22:24 katsmeow-afk some 5000 series scopes are going for less, and with a 5A14 you can display 8 channels, plus the triggers
22:25 katsmeow-afk i got a working 500Mhz scope for $145
22:25 katsmeow-afk afk, noises
