04:01 katsmeow-afk http://designerthinking.com/benchpsu.html#bottom
04:03 katsmeow-afk the mentioned 1.5meg pics zoom better in FF than IE
04:03 katsmeow-afk imho
04:09 Tom_itx nice
04:11 katsmeow-afk thanks :-)
04:11 Tom_itx u got alot more to do
04:11 katsmeow-afk yeas, i feel a lot like i have too much to do
04:14 katsmeow-afk starting in on the psu again, after the screwed up non-mve to Fla, was supposed to take my mind off it a lil , not overwhelm all my time
04:14 katsmeow-afk it has some interesting features, but i haveto pull it all together, tween time on the roof garden (which is using dirt i haveto move to put the water pump in the cellar), and moving back into this place
04:14 katsmeow-afk i fear my recliners out int he driveway now have termites, i just cannot get them inside yet
05:53 katsmeow-afk 5:45am, and i am already dirty and sweaty, and been using a demohammer on the ground to break it up
05:55 katsmeow-afk the pick-mattock wasn't working, and it was tearing up my shoulders, so despite what GuShH says about me having things, i do keep using the things i have
05:57 katsmeow-afk A mattock has a shaft, typically made of wood, which is about 3–4 ft (0.9–1.2 m) long.[1] The head comprises two ends, opposite each other, and separated by a central eye; a mattock head typically weighs 3–7 lb (1.4–3.2 kg).[1] The form of the head determines its identity and its use:[2]
05:57 katsmeow-afk The head of a pick mattock combines a pick and an adze. It is "one of the best tools for grubbing in hard soils and rocky terrain".[2] The adze may be sharpened, but the pick rarely is; it is generally squared rather than beveled.[2]

06:02 katsmeow-afk funny, 20 yrs ago no one knew what one was, now there's pics online of them
06:03 katsmeow-afk i couldn't get one at Sears, Lowes, or Homedepot, now they all have them
06:05 katsmeow-afk it does matter a whole lot what the angle is on the pick and the mattock steel, else they have bounce and will get little work done
06:06 katsmeow-afk lucky me has metal working tools and can reset these things
06:06 katsmeow-afk i complete wore a 10" pick down to 2" once, and welded a grade8 bolt onto it, it wore out in no time
06:06 katsmeow-afk those things must be made of some interesting steel
07:00 Tom_itx pick axe
07:01 Tom_itx good to do that sort when it' 'cool'
07:01 Tom_itx it's*
07:12 Tom_itx it's too damn bad when you go to buy a quality tool they don't give you the metalurgy on it
07:23 katsmeow-afk yea, how can they overlook a thing like that?
07:33 katsmeow-afk i am exhausted for the moment
07:35 katsmeow-afk got the path along the south wall leveled with the hardpan chipped out witht he demolition hammer, got 2 more buckets of dirt up to the ladder tot he roof, got the window a/c outside and opened up and hosed squirrel debris out of it
07:37 katsmeow-afk and made teh 6 conductor knob ; rue : http://designerthinking.com/benchpsu.html#bottom
07:38 katsmeow-afk the big pics look better in FF
07:39 katsmeow-afk oh, the knob is sitting on heatsinks i pulled from some cablebox units, i pulled other heatsinks from them last nite, but decided i can make room for these fat tall aluminum ones
08:04 katsmeow-afk look at the temperatures they say will be here in a few days : http://classic.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=35128&wuSelect=WEATHER
08:53 rue_mohr hey
08:53 rue_mohr uh
08:54 rue_mohr a pentium one is about 50 or 60W yes?
08:54 rue_mohr the tip35 is about 130W...
08:55 rue_mohr hsould I worry about you having 1040W of transistors on a 60W heatsink?
08:56 rue_mohr oh 16W ea, x 4 ok
08:58 rue_mohr cool kat!
08:59 rue_mohr so kat, what all do you need the microcontroller to be doing?
09:01 katsmeow-afk display data, watching the mot voltage so if it collapses the output is shut off, latching the overcurrent turnoff, playing back voltage or current wavforms from memory, etc
09:02 rue_mohr the regulator is analog yes? so the microcontroller would be providing a analog ref voltage?
09:02 katsmeow-afk but being able to fit 4 baby transformers across also means i have all of a 450ma 12v winding for opamps and avr and such
09:03 katsmeow-afk yeas
09:03 rue_mohr 0-5V ref voltage?
09:03 katsmeow-afk the avr i have, have no adc in them, but i have lots of 10bit adc in cable boxes
09:03 rue_mohr any dac?
09:04 rue_mohr damn I forgot to shave again
09:04 katsmeow-afk ref volts aren't a problem, i have regulators, i mean the avr does a dac from memory to make a waveform of any kind, or just pwm the 12vdc@15amp output
09:05 rue_mohr did you have anything in mind for max slew rate?
09:05 katsmeow-afk i have ~300 audio 16bit dacs, but they are sterio serial
09:05 katsmeow-afk no
09:05 rue_mohr 100V/s maybe?
09:06 katsmeow-afk this is a bench psu, not a dedicates special purpose engineering marvel
09:06 katsmeow-afk not likely
09:06 katsmeow-afk oh/s, sure
09:06 katsmeow-afk but not 100v/ms
09:06 rue_mohr no
09:06 rue_mohr so, no using it as an audio amp :) its a power supply
09:07 rue_mohr ok
09:07 katsmeow-afk well, it's also 0v to some other volts, it's not +15 to -15 swing
09:08 rue_mohr channels are unipolar yes?
09:08 katsmeow-afk unless the remote plugins are used to link two psu to do that
09:08 katsmeow-afk yeas
09:08 rue_mohr did you havea voltage/current siwtch beside the display?
09:08 katsmeow-afk the avr can also monitor heat sink temperatures, etc, and make led blinky
09:09 katsmeow-afk hmm ?
09:09 rue_mohr red warning led?
09:09 katsmeow-afk ok, sure, red can be done
09:09 rue_mohr the dsplay is 3 digits, yes?
09:09 katsmeow-afk yeas
09:09 rue_mohr and you have a select switch to change iit between voltage or current?
09:09 katsmeow-afk why would i do that?
09:10 rue_mohr do you have 2 sets of displays/channel?
09:10 katsmeow-afk yep
09:10 rue_mohr ah
09:10 rue_mohr ok
09:10 rue_mohr so 6x7seg per channel
09:10 katsmeow-afk http://designerthinking.com/images/benchpsu/s/DSCF2106cs.jpg
09:10 rue_mohr ah yes
09:12 katsmeow-afk 10bit a/d gives me 1024 samples between 0v and 15v, or ~15mv/step
09:12 rue_mohr 1023
09:12 rue_mohr well
09:12 rue_mohr 0-1023
09:13 katsmeow-afk i am puttng analog pots in the front panel, but digital pots can go into the remotes for rediculous special accuracy
09:13 katsmeow-afk i tried the digital switch pots, i could be twistingknobs all day long to adjust the thing
09:14 katsmeow-afk and if there was an overcurrent it wold take all day to reset it
09:14 rue_mohr so the controller consists of avr, adc, dac, drivers for 6x7seg, rs232 buffers, 2 led drivers...
09:14 rue_mohr ?
09:15 katsmeow-afk i think by putting the mini-din into the knob, i beat Tektronix at the knob overloading-function game ;-)
09:15 rue_mohr :)
09:15 rue_mohr they arent stacked knobs with a serial on the end and a pushbutton :)
09:15 katsmeow-afk drivers for 7seg? i was gonna use some octal latches
09:15 rue_mohr "drivers"
09:15 katsmeow-afk ?
09:16 rue_mohr well they provide the current to operate the leds, therefore they drive them
09:16 katsmeow-afk what happeed to a digital signal per segment, and a resistor?
09:16 rue_mohr its still a driver
09:16 katsmeow-afk i don't have any "drivers", i have latches and resistors
09:17 tsmeow-afk looks conf
09:17 rue_mohr whatever switches the led is a driver, even if its an octal latch
09:17 katsmeow-afk k
09:17 rue_mohr the displays will show from 0 to 150 right?
09:18 katsmeow-afk else i could be cheap and try to make the avr mux the displays al ong with everything else it hasto do, but i figure it will be too busy if i need it to make a triangle wave out of the psu output
09:18 rue_mohr fixed place? xx.x ?
09:19 rue_mohr or auto wandering decimal point?
09:19 katsmeow-afk x.xx to xx.x , i think
09:19 rue_mohr l
09:19 rue_mohr k
09:19 rue_mohr :)
09:19 katsmeow-afk else i'd need a 16bit adc
09:19 rue_mohr so from 0.00 to 9.99 and 10.0 to 15.0
09:20 katsmeow-afk if a device needs high precision, thenit need a regulator of it's own, because there canbe 15mv of drop in the lines to the psu
09:20 katsmeow-afk yeas
09:20 e_mohr quints, the user lists keeps chan
09:21 katsmeow-afk it's tobbot
09:21 rue_mohr ah
09:21 katsmeow-afk 09:09:54am 06/27/12 Wednesday tobbor Remote host closed the connection .
09:21 katsmeow-afk . 09:10:02am 06/27/12 Wednesday tobbor Changing host .
09:22 rue_mohr 1000+60
09:22 rue_mohr so it'd have to be...wait a sec
09:22 katsmeow-afk ?
09:23 rue_mohr what if I gave you a rom that would take in the 10 bit code and mux out to 3 digits with automatic decimal point?
09:23 rue_mohr you would need 10+2 address lines
09:23 katsmeow-afk i'd need 12 of them
09:23 rue_mohr np
09:23 rue_mohr how big is a rom with 12 address lines?
09:23 katsmeow-afk 4096
09:24 katsmeow-afk why not do it in the avr?
09:24 rue_mohr 8 = 256 9 = 512 10 = 1k 11 = 2k 12 = 4k.... 13 = 8k 14 = 16k = 2716 ....
09:25 rue_mohr I cant give you programmed 2716, but I can give you 27256 or 27512
09:25 rue_mohr cause it could take care of everything automatically
09:25 rue_mohr think of the board space savings
09:25 rue_mohr 1 rom and 1 244 to drive 3 digits
09:25 katsmeow-afk 2 latches
09:25 rue_mohr does that save space?
09:26 rue_mohr pff I think that a fun project,
09:26 rue_mohr if you will excuse me, I need to get some pants on
09:26 katsmeow-afk wait, two latch from the avr, and 3 latches to the leds
09:27 rue_mohr no, muxed via rom
09:27 rue_mohr it might be a stupid idea
09:27 rue_mohr I'll play
09:27 katsmeow-afk your rom would need 1024 address lines, and 23 data lines out
09:27 katsmeow-afk err, 12 address lines
09:28 rue_mohr no
09:28 katsmeow-afk yeas, else it cannot autoadjust the decimal points
09:28 rue_mohr 10 data bits in, 2 strobe bits in, 8 segments out
09:28 rue_mohr --8 segments out--
09:28 rue_mohr think now, each digit is just a table lookup
09:29 rue_mohr I'll play
09:29 rue_mohr each 10 bit code always displays the same thing on the 3 digits
09:30 rue_mohr 10 bit code | 3 digit display
09:30 rue_mohr ______________________________________
09:30 katsmeow-afk you don't need a 10 bit code to dialay on a 7seg display
09:30 rue_mohr 0 | 0.00
09:30 rue_mohr but you do across 3 of them
09:31 rue_mohr 1 | 0.02
09:31 katsmeow-afk yeas, and 3 7seg = 21 lines, plus the decimal points
09:31 rue_mohr the decimal makes it 3x8seg
09:31 rue_mohr and we just happen to have 8 bits out the rom
09:31 katsmeow-afk 24 data lines, 10 address lines
09:32 rue_mohr I can do it wit 10+2 address and 8 data
09:32 rue_mohr muxed
09:32 katsmeow-afk i need a nap, i can't figure out what you wanna do
09:33 rue_mohr I'll build it and bother you later
09:33 e_mohr tries to get his pants on, he's
09:34 katsmeow-afk you haveto pull the on at the wide end
09:34 katsmeow-afk don't insert feets into the little holes and then pull them on
09:35 katsmeow-afk ok, afk to turn off ro water-jugs, and take a short nap
09:35 katsmeow-afk i was all dirty and sweaty as the sun came up this morning
21:14 katsmeow-afk geese, the data that people tried to put into this db's fields wasn't length tested at all
21:14 katsmeow-afk where *one word* was expected, people tried to enter pages of descriptives
21:56 iamturnip rue_mohr: input: SealieComputing RetroGlove as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.2/usb4/4-2/4-2:1.0/input/input17
21:56 iamturnip it works
22:00 iamturnip though it made the mouse fly all over my screen
22:03 tsmeow-afk notes the new definition of "wo
22:10 iamturnip well...the usb bit rue bought works I should say
22:10 iamturnip now comes the long road of figuring out how to make it work the way I want it too
22:11 iamturnip so i suppose the better term to use today was - "it communicates"
22:11 katsmeow-afk ah, congrats :-)
22:12 Tom_itx what usb bit did rue buy?
22:12 Tom_itx one of my boards?
22:12 katsmeow-afk i am still trying to imagine rue *buying* something he prolly already has in a pile somewhere
22:13 Tom_itx no, rue is rather light on usb stuff
22:13 katsmeow-afk "usb interface" = "mouse"
22:14 katsmeow-afk i know it's more complex, where one jack can be amouse input, a svga output, a lan interface, or a harddrive io port
22:16 iamturnip Tom_itx: it was a kit for making a NES power glove into a usb device
22:17 Tom_itx oh ok
22:17 Tom_itx he got a couple usb boards from me as well
22:17 iamturnip next step is to make it musical
22:17 Tom_itx not sure what he's planning for them
22:17 iamturnip but i agree he is not Mr. USB
22:18 iamturnip he did however get an interviewed at Maker Faire last weekend
22:18 iamturnip an event my company sponsors - I'm glad he came out this time to show off his robots!
22:19 iamturnip it will be on the web in a month or so and was done by these peeps http://www.freyburg.com/
22:20 iamturnip jesus you'd think English was a second langauage for me! "... get an interviewed..."
