01:07 AM _ami_: i never used amd since i had bad impression about amds when i was in college. my friends were running amd and they complained about the cpu heatup
01:11 AM _ami_: so never had a amd machine
01:11 AM _ami_: or laptop
01:11 AM _ami_: amd might be better now.
01:11 AM _ami_: btw, rue_mohr, i2c worked on stm32 for you?
01:11 AM _ami_: i did send you the latest code. there was some issue in ack code while reading data
01:11 AM _ami_: i just discovered that libocm3 has i2c_set_speed() function so that fastmode code can be removed though.
01:11 AM _ami_: although i like to calculate ccr and trise based on abp1 frequency in case of overclocked stm32.
01:15 AM _ami_: the code which i sent you was just few hours age baby! :)
01:29 AM _ami_: cehteh, ask for refund and keep the cpu. :D
01:29 AM _ami_: or make a 30% money refund of what you paid. :P
01:29 AM _ami_: IMO its legimate demand
01:30 AM Casper: _ami_: the cpu heatup on amd was mostly people getting scared for no reason. The cpu does run hotter, but it is made like so, so it is normal and perfectly fine.
01:30 AM _ami_: legitimate*
01:30 AM Casper: however, beside the original amd thunderbird, about all of the AMD run meh
01:31 AM _ami_: thats good to know.
01:31 AM _ami_: also one more reason why i did not buy AMD. AMD and MS love affair. :P
01:33 AM _ami_: AMD drivers support on linux used to be BAD then.
01:49 AM Casper: amd fixed a big chunk of the issues by taking back the control of the chipset
01:49 AM Casper: but that is not quite enought
01:50 AM Casper: I feels like amd have big issue with hard drive access, don't know why... it feels like all disk access, be sata or NVMe lag
01:51 AM Casper: I don't get that lag via ramdrive
01:51 AM Casper: and it is both on windows and linux
01:51 AM Casper: there is also other weird lag here and there that I can't explain on amd, that I don't feels on intel
01:52 AM Casper: I repair computer for a living, and I can tell what cpu kind the computer run... be P4, PD, core2, I3, I5/7 (can't easilly differenciate it with what I do), or AMD
01:54 AM Casper: on a few rare occasion, I got surprised by an amd machine, but that is quite rare, and I can't understand why... like... why does a 350$ amd machine 6-8 years old feels like a 800$+ intel machine brand new?
01:54 AM Casper: usually it's the reverse: the amd feels 5 years older than what it is
04:01 AM dev1990: https://www.theregister.co.uk/AMP/2018/01/02/intel_cpu_design_flaw/
04:02 AM dev1990: now intel have a big problem
04:04 AM LeoNerd: Yeah I was just reading that. It sounds Interesting; as per the Chinese provervb
04:04 AM LeoNerd: *proverb
04:05 AM dev1990: I don't know all the details but from now on if I understand correctly there is a way to get access to protected memory of kernel on intel platform
04:05 AM dev1990: amd statement: https://lkml.org/lkml/2017/12/27/2
04:05 AM LeoNerd: The various information and patches suggest that some amount of at least read-access might be possible, yup
04:06 AM dev1990: I got quick look on those patches, there are many areas that need to be patched in kernel and probably up-to 30% performance decrase
04:08 AM dev1990: not sure how many generation of intel are affected
04:09 AM dev1990: but comment are like a whole bunch...
04:10 AM dev1990: I'm wondering about VPS'es and all hosting companies :) With that kind of bug, they are in big trouble
04:18 AM dev1990: Casper: with ryzen and new core architecture that was designed from scratch, they take big jump right now, and they preparing for 10nm in 2018 and 7nm (later on) litography and ryzen 2 that should be another big step up for them.
04:20 AM dev1990: intel take a 3-4 or more generation on 14nm, but now I they also planning to jump 10nm, well competition is good
04:25 AM dev1990: _ami_: my next graphics card will be radeon for sure, no more binary blobs :) and well migration to wayland \o/
04:25 AM dev1990: I'm getting that strange feeling that I quote somebody on "my next graphics card will be radeon", haha
04:25 AM _ami_: o/
04:27 AM dev1990: oh I read more messages above
04:27 AM dev1990: topic already discussed
04:28 AM * dev1990 going somewhere else
04:30 AM MrFahrenheit: Casper, there's a possibility that javascript will be able to use the exploit as well, just like rowhammer
06:52 AM polprog: haha. i knew building an amd+radeon rig was a good idea
06:52 AM polprog: winder when arch gets that updated kernel
06:52 AM polprog: :P
06:57 AM MrFahrenheit: it's in testing
06:57 AM MrFahrenheit: I wonder when debian will get it though
06:58 AM polprog: after x86 disappear from everyday life kek
06:59 AM MrFahrenheit: even backports only has 4.9, that doesn't have pcid functionality
06:59 AM polprog: pcid?
06:59 AM MrFahrenheit: jessie, at least
06:59 AM MrFahrenheit: pcid diminishes the performance impact of the patches since a page table cache flush isn't needed
07:00 AM MrFahrenheit: but support for it was just added to the kernel in 4.14 iirc
07:00 AM polprog: is that the patch they submitted that checks if the CPU is intel?
07:00 AM MrFahrenheit: no, it a cpu functionality that allows it to tag page table cache entries so they don't need to be flushed
07:01 AM polprog: oh
07:01 AM polprog: well x86 core programming is completely strange for me
07:04 AM MrFahrenheit: the amd patch is actually just one if statement - (if cpu is amd: don't fuck it up)
07:04 AM polprog: i know, i saw it
07:06 AM dev1990: VIA is going to release x86 cpus so probably this if statement will change
07:07 AM polprog: is going? i think they stopped once
07:08 AM dev1990: https://overclock3d.net/news/cpu_mainboard/via_plans_their_x86_comeback_with_amd_in_their_sights_for_2019/1
07:09 AM polprog: right
07:09 AM MrFahrenheit: they were making really slow ones at the end and then they stopped, I doubt they'll be targeting the general market this time?
07:10 AM polprog: well, i may get one just for fun
07:10 AM dev1990: ;)
07:10 AM MrFahrenheit: guess they are: "In 2018 VIA plans to release their KX-6000 series of CPUs, offering 4 or 8 core processors with clock speeds of 3GHz with support for DDR4 memory and PCIe 3.0."
07:11 AM dev1990: polprog: are you on arch :) ?
07:51 AM polprog: dev1990: yea
07:51 AM polprog: why are you asking?
08:07 AM dev1990: sometimes I'm reading arch documentation, but I'm on gentoo. Some parts of arch documentation looks like was borrow from gentoo docs and extended to some point
08:08 AM polprog: arch wiki is quite universal
08:08 AM polprog: i remember taking some snippets from it when i was on debian / ubuntu
08:09 AM dev1990: gentoo probably too
08:09 AM polprog: after all they use the same Xorg, same everything
08:25 AM nuxil: xorg. meh :p
08:27 AM nuxil: if the dev for xorg foundation putted equal as much effort in makeing it good as the Kernel developers it might not have sucked so much :p
08:27 AM dev1990: wayland, yay
08:31 AM nuxil: how is that going?
08:31 AM dev1990: probably fine if you don't have nvidia drivers :)
08:32 AM nuxil: hehe
08:32 AM nuxil: you get a big fuckyou finger icon at bootup if you have ?
08:32 AM nuxil: :p
08:33 AM MrFahrenheit: I've been looking forward to a replacement for X since 2008 or something, but honestly, wayland it not what I wanted
08:34 AM polprog: i dont care honestly
08:34 AM polprog: xorg is good for mw
08:34 AM polprog: me*
08:35 AM dev1990: from performance perspective and better usability this is important
08:37 AM dev1990: and security and many many more
08:38 AM dev1990: It's better to build embedded system with wayland rather xorg
08:38 AM MrFahrenheit: a few days ago I managed to get xorg to run on a second gpu I installed in this pc... I like using amd, but there's this one game I play consistently where an old nvidia card gives me double fps
08:38 AM MrFahrenheit: so I run my desktop on the radeon, and when I want to play the game, I switch to another tty and start x on the other card and play the game on the right monitor
08:38 AM dev1990: MrFahrenheit: are you on latest mesa/kernel ?
08:38 AM MrFahrenheit: yes
08:39 AM dev1990: well mesa drivers get performance improvement from version to version especially for amd
08:39 AM dev1990: so this smart choice to get lastest
08:41 AM dev1990: many developers now working with opensource amd stack so in future this probably will change
08:41 AM MrFahrenheit: it's a GCN 1.0 card, so it's not a speed machine
08:45 AM rue_mohr: _ami_, I have yet to sit down with it
08:45 AM rue_mohr: been trying to work my way around a voice audio filter
08:53 AM nuxil: what you making ?
08:54 AM _ami_: rue_mohr: ok,
08:56 AM rue_mohr: I'm gonna see if I'm clever enough to make a voice recognition gig with an avr
08:56 AM nuxil: voice filter?
08:56 AM nuxil: ahh cool
08:56 AM rue_mohr: I want to start with a front end that does a bandpass of 300-3000hz
08:57 AM nuxil: bandwidth of voices are usaly at 500 to 4k and speeks at around 1k til 2K
08:58 AM nuxil: males that is. :p
08:58 AM rue_mohr: telephone filters are 300-3k
08:58 AM nuxil: http://www.dpamicrophones.com/mic-university/facts-about-speech-intelligibility
08:58 AM rue_mohr: then put thru a ADC @ 8khz
09:01 AM rue_mohr: but, as that kinda says, I'm thinking part of the frontend should be an agc
09:01 AM rue_mohr: theBear, or compressor?
09:02 AM rue_mohr: nuxil, good page
09:02 AM nuxil: hope it helps :p
09:04 AM rue_mohr: I'm going with phone tech, but this gives other interesting backup data
10:17 AM _ami_: is it necessary to connect all i2c slaves/master on common ground?
10:17 AM Emil: >voice recognition
10:17 AM Emil: You mean
10:17 AM Emil: voice to commands?
10:17 AM Emil: With avr?
10:18 AM Emil: top keke
10:19 AM Emil: Anycase, digital bandpass, agc preamp (max9814 for example), adc
10:19 AM Emil: you can also do the bandpass after the agc preamp
10:27 AM kpo_: _ami_: i2c is not differential protocol, so You have to have common ground potential for logic levels
10:28 AM _ami_: hmm, got it.
10:28 AM Emil: _ami_: bruh
10:28 AM Emil: :D
10:29 AM _ami_: now, need to figure out how to have 3.3v devices and 5v devices on i2c line.
10:29 AM _ami_: confusing part is the Vdd value for SDA/SCL in this case?
10:30 AM Emil: just use 3.3v on the line
10:30 AM Emil: should work just fine
10:30 AM Emil: If you want to do it the proper way
10:30 AM Emil: https://www.nxp.com/docs/en/application-note/AN10441.pdf
10:30 AM Emil: or a chip: http://www.ti.com/product/pca9306
10:31 AM _ami_: aha, thanks. this is exactly what i need.
10:31 AM _ami_: woah, separation between 3v and 5v devices
10:31 AM _ami_: that is nice.
10:31 AM _ami_: got it! :)
10:32 AM _ami_: 2 BJTs will do the job.
10:33 AM * _ami_ makes notes of it.
10:44 AM Casper: _ami_: take note that often those separators slow down the possible max speed, the max speed may/should be higher than what you plan to use anyway, but just keep that in mind
10:45 AM nohit_: most stm32 io are 5v tolerant
10:46 AM _ami_: yes, IC1/2 pins of stm32 are 5v tolerant
10:47 AM _ami_: only the ADC pins PA0..7 and PB0/1 are not 3.3v
10:47 AM _ami_: tolerant.
10:47 AM _ami_: Casper: ok.
10:48 AM _ami_: good point.

12:21 PM NoSu: good to know

12:23 PM NoSu: money made.
12:23 PM Emil: Usually cryptomoney

12:24 PM Emil: yeah
12:24 PM NoSu: all money is a scam
12:24 PM Emil: but you can still make real money with a scam
12:24 PM MrFahrenheit: when will that bubble burst, it's getting annoying
12:24 PM NoSu: shit to keep our minds locked down.
12:25 PM Emil: MrFahrenheit: when governments adopt their own currency that is fairly distributed
12:25 PM Emil: cryptocurrency*
12:25 PM Emil: The concept of cryptocurrency is really nice but the inequalityaspect of it is ridiculous :D
12:25 PM NoSu: we need a system like startrek
12:25 PM MrFahrenheit: Emil, I mean the cryprocurrency bubble that's going on right now
12:25 PM nuxil: japa is working on a official crypto currency iirc
12:25 PM nuxil: *japan
12:25 PM NoSu: shit is good enjoy doing good things

12:26 PM Emil: they say it's not money
12:26 PM Emil: because it's a token
12:26 PM Emil: but you can use it like money
12:26 PM Emil: So they are like ":D"
12:26 PM MrFahrenheit: read some article earlier "hooters invented their own currency for loyalty points, their stock went up 50%"
12:26 PM Emil: "We aren't breaking any rules because it's TOKEN boiiis"
12:27 PM NoSu: A token of your affection

12:28 PM Emil: cash is hard to store, hard to use

12:28 PM NoSu: easy to steal
12:28 PM Emil: yeah
12:28 PM Emil: yeasy to destroy
12:28 PM Emil: The one good thing with cash is that it's easy to conceal
12:29 PM NoSu: locked to inflation
12:29 PM Emil: relatively
12:29 PM Emil: but
12:29 PM Emil: electronic money beats cash
12:29 PM nuxil: naw :p
12:29 PM NoSu: there should just be no monies.
12:29 PM Emil: easy to store, easy to use, easy to transport, hard to steal (relatively) but also hard to conceal
12:30 PM NoSu: Unless you use XMR
12:31 PM Emil: By electronic money I mean traditional money that you just keep in electronics form
12:31 PM NoSu: ok
12:31 PM Emil: if you meant the cryptomoney with xmr
12:32 PM Emil: bitcoin is at the same time hard to use hard to store hard to transport and their reverse
12:33 PM MrFahrenheit: I thought bitcoin was fine till I read how much energy the network wastes
12:33 PM nuxil: i mostly use my "visa" card online. i rarly use it in the shops/supermarket. due to a fee each time its used" so i take out cash about 1000K $ ++ or so from the atm each month, save the rest.. and use the money to pay food and such stuff. and the coins i get in return i put on in a moneybox.
12:33 PM Emil: exactly
12:33 PM Emil: nuxil: what fee?
12:33 PM NoSu: it apparently waste less energy though than the current fiat market
12:34 PM Emil: NoSu: bullshit
12:34 PM Emil: NoSu: you've heard wrong
12:34 PM MrFahrenheit: it's based on wasting energy
12:34 PM nuxil: Emil, its about 6Kr each time i use it in a store with visa terminal. thats a little less than a 1dollar
12:34 PM NoSu: all the factories used to produce it and ship it around
12:34 PM Emil: You have heard or remember the exact opposite of how traditional transactions work
12:34 PM Emil: MrFahrenheit: yeah
12:35 PM NoSu: you taking your cash to the store to buy something
12:35 PM NoSu: in person
12:35 PM Emil: nuxil: wtf
12:35 PM Emil: nuxil: wtf wtf wtf
12:35 PM nuxil: Emil, yea. banks are greedy here :p
12:35 PM Emil: nuxil: if you buy a 10 cent lollypop
12:35 PM Emil: you pay 70 cents? :D
12:35 PM nuxil: well basically yea
12:35 PM Emil: WHAT THE FUCK BOI :D
12:36 PM Emil: That's _ridiculous_!
12:36 PM nuxil: indeed. thats why i pay with cash in stores.
12:36 PM Emil: I thought visa et cetera had rules about not placing that cost on the customer
12:36 PM Emil: Because lol in Finland your normal transactions are free
12:36 PM Emil: the merchant pays of course
12:36 PM Emil: but the customer does't see it (it's of course baked into the price of products)
12:37 PM Emil: Paying 60 cents everytime you use a credit card on top of the merchant already paying is TOP KEK :DDDD
12:37 PM nuxil: yup. so i dont use it much.
12:37 PM Emil: That's absolutely ridiculous
12:39 PM Emil: nuxil: are you sure it's not just you
12:39 PM nuxil: well. what can you say. "greedy banks", they started to take fees "5kr" each time you logged yourself into your net account for you bank aswell, even with out doing anything there but check how much you got., but they goverment put a stop too that.
12:39 PM Emil: excusemewhat
12:39 PM Emil: whattheactualfuck
12:39 PM learath: nuxil: wow, that's awful
12:39 PM Emil: that's like :D
12:39 PM learath: 5kr to log in? how much does that work out to in freedom dollars?
12:40 PM learath: (or another currency really)
12:40 PM Emil: learath: around 80 cents
12:40 PM Emil: nowait
12:40 PM Emil: 6kr was 0.6 euro
12:40 PM learath: that's ... pretty significant
12:40 PM Emil: 5 nok is 0.62 usd
12:40 PM Emil: learath: ikr
12:41 PM nuxil: yea. Norwegian Kr is weak these days.
12:41 PM Emil: I should post this to reddit and reap some karma on how absolutely ridiculous that is
12:41 PM learath: Emil: you should!
12:42 PM Emil: nuxil: do you have a news article on this?
12:42 PM Emil: How old is this thing?
12:42 PM Emil: nuxil: are you also sure the fee is on all credit and debit transactions with a card?
12:43 PM nuxil: oh. let me see if i can dig some up. but yea the netbank thingy is kind of old. atleast 10 years.
12:43 PM Emil: Sounds like EA
12:43 PM nuxil: LOL..
12:45 PM Emil: The intent is to provide customers with a sense of pride and accomplishment for using a fundamental service.
12:48 PM crapp is now known as zerox2a
12:49 PM nuxil: Emil, ok hard to find any good articles about the netbank. but now it only says under terms of usage. "usage: free / shiping a receipt 20kr".
12:52 PM nuxil: as for the fee of using the card. it also changed alot. now it depends if your young/studen or grown up.. but in general. its about 5 of 8 banks that does take fees on usage of the card for "incontry shoping"
12:54 PM Emil: nuxil: retarded, absolutely retarded
12:54 PM Emil: But since it's a pretty inflexbile demand they make money with it
12:54 PM nuxil: but hey. in norway they think taxes and fee's will solve every problem :p
01:04 PM learath: nuxil: eh, the US is headed that way rapidly as well, unless you are super-rich
01:04 PM learath: people keep screaming at me how low my 'taxes' (federal income tax) are, ignoring the million other taxes
01:05 PM nuxil: yea.
01:05 PM learath: I'm really not sure how to even work on that as a problem
01:06 PM nuxil: but why i dont get about the people in US: why do you pay a federal tax ? it's not constitutional right?
01:09 PM dsalychev1: hey, guys. I'd like to know one tricky thing. There isn't a demand to connect to remote GDB targets from Atmel Studio to access, for instance, simavr simulator, is there? I've found a plugin for AVR Studio 4 (is it Atmel Studio?), but outdated one only: https://community.atmel.com/projects/avrstudio4-plugin-gdb-target
01:10 PM learath: we pay 3+ layers of taxes, federal, state, local (and sometimes more)
01:13 PM nuxil: awefull.
01:45 PM Emil: learath: and the taxes are not done for you either :D
01:45 PM Emil: learath: it's ridiculous
01:46 PM learath: Emil: yeah
01:46 PM learath: at the end of the year most people should just get a postcard
01:46 PM learath: with proposed taxes
01:46 PM learath: they can accept, or dispute
01:47 PM learath: There is no point in people doing their own taxes (for the most part)

06:31 PM MrFahrenheit: google posted an update on the intel bug https://security.googleblog.com/2018/01/todays-cpu-vulnerability-what-you-need.html
06:31 PM MrFahrenheit: they claim amd is affected
06:32 PM Emil: MrFahrenheit: lets see how AMD responds
06:32 PM Emil: because it seems like google just listed all of the cpu manufacturers because "can't blame intel oh no"
06:33 PM cehteh: is there some conclusive answer if intels atom cpus are affected too? i thought the are some quite different arch internally
06:34 PM Emil: Also lulz
06:34 PM Emil: Google broke the embargo
06:34 PM Emil: they went off the script
06:34 PM Emil: I can see the other parties pretty angry at google
06:35 PM Emil: I guess the secutity patch that I got today on Android is related?
06:36 PM MrFahrenheit: they say there are 3 bugs in play, amd is probably not vulnerable to the one kpti protects from or they would have not stated so
06:36 PM Casper: that google blog
06:36 PM Casper: it talk about READ only
06:36 PM Casper: no write
06:36 PM MrFahrenheit: google says they were made aware of the problems 6 moths ago
06:37 PM Casper: if that is the case, then the attack is way less disastrous than what people think
06:37 PM Emil: Casper: it was ever only read access
06:37 PM Casper: some suggested a full read write access
06:38 PM MrFahrenheit: they say they have "A PoC for variant 1 that, when running with normal user privileges under a modern Linux kernel with a distro-standard config, can perform arbitrary reads in a 4GiB range [3] in kernel virtual memory on the Intel Haswell Xeon CPU. If the kernel's BPF JIT is enabled (non-default configuration), it also works on the AMD PRO CPU."
06:38 PM Emil: Casper: if you get keys you can have full write access
06:38 PM cehteh: bad enough when you can read secret data which may lead to other exploits, keys, random generator states, memory layout
06:38 PM Emil: Yeah
06:39 PM cehteh: initially i thought it only breaks ASLR which wont be that desastrous
06:39 PM cehteh: aslr in itself is only a attack mitigation, not real security
06:39 PM MrFahrenheit: also, it looks as if they broke the embargo 5 days too soon, after sitting on it for more than 6 months
06:39 PM Casper: emil: yes, and no, there is means to mitigate, but yeah, it's bad, but not as bad as people say. Just fricking validate the user's data... VM will be able to patch that flaw easilly by preventing any memory access to outside the VM own's memory (they should already do that) and the bug would be useless
06:39 PM cehteh: but when you gain read access to other data that can be pretty damn serious
06:40 PM Casper: really, just fricking do your job when coding and 95%+ of the issue is fixed
06:40 PM Casper: sadly, programmers are idiots when you talk about security
06:41 PM MrFahrenheit: so it looks like amd is mostly safe, I guess, the pro cpu is vulnerable in a non-standard configuration
06:42 PM Casper: google's blog seems to say that amd is unsafe too
06:42 PM MrFahrenheit: read the full report
06:42 PM Emil: Casper: bruh
06:43 PM Emil: MrFahrenheit: I said that already ;)
06:43 PM Emil: About going off script
06:43 PM Emil: Casper: bruh, this is not about programmers doing their job
06:43 PM Emil: It's a literal bug in the speculative execution on Intels
06:44 PM Emil: Hardware bug
06:44 PM MrFahrenheit: Emil, I was replying to you
06:45 PM MrFahrenheit: also, Casper, once you can read kernel memory you defeat aslr and then you can use rowhammer to flip bits
06:46 PM Casper: emil: I know, and it is still an issue with programmers that don't do their job correctly by not protecting the inputs proprelly. The VM shall ensure that the guest can not under any circumstance have memory access outside of their memory page. If they would actually do their job proprelly then the bug can not cross the VM boundary
06:46 PM Emil: Casper: lulz
06:46 PM Emil: You are barking at the wrong tree
06:47 PM Casper: and you are howling at the moon
06:47 PM Emil: If specs say that "1+1=2" then there is pretty much nothing the bloody vm writers should do differently about that
06:47 PM Emil: Literally
06:47 PM MrFahrenheit: Casper, it's a cpu bug that breaks the cpu spec, what are you talking about
06:48 PM Casper: MrFahrenheit: the vm should and must be able to catch that call and prevent it.
06:48 PM Emil: sigh
06:48 PM MrFahrenheit: it's like an avr bursts into flames if you set a certain register to 42, and you say "lazy programmers"
06:48 PM Casper: I'm not concerned about the direct, non-virtualised environnement
06:48 PM Emil: Casper: the code is adjusted to do that now
06:48 PM MrFahrenheit: the vm is hardware based too
06:48 PM Emil: Casper: you are really just shouting nonsense at nothing
06:48 PM MrFahrenheit: unless you want to run bochs at 1/100th speed
06:48 PM Casper: because if you run a malicious code, then it already have access to the system, the hardware bug just help to get throught, but the machine is already compromised
06:49 PM Emil: Casper: allmywot
06:49 PM Emil: Casper: just stop
06:49 PM tpw_rules: Casper: then what's the point of a VM?
06:49 PM Emil: you are embarrassing yourself
06:49 PM Casper: the real issue is when the guess can cross the VM barrier
06:49 PM MrFahrenheit: THAT'S THE BUG
06:49 PM Casper: which require both a VM bug AND hardware bug in this precise case
06:49 PM tpw_rules: lol no
06:50 PM Casper: fix the vm code, you work around the issue
06:50 PM MrFahrenheit: THE VM IS IMPLEMENTED USING CPU VIRTUALISATION INSTRUCTIONS
06:50 PM tpw_rules: you can't, sorry
06:50 PM tpw_rules: the silicon is hardwired broken
06:50 PM tpw_rules: can't disable the branch predictor
06:50 PM MrFahrenheit: VT-x for intel
06:50 PM MrFahrenheit: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/virtualization/virtualization-technology/intel-virtualization-technology.html
06:51 PM cehteh: you can disable the branch predictor .. but that would be more than 30% performance loss :D
06:51 PM tpw_rules: well not without a decap and FIB
06:51 PM Emil: tpw_rules: I'm actually pretty certain that microcode update could disable branch prediction
06:51 PM Emil: since it's risc that's interpreting x64
06:52 PM tpw_rules: eh i think BP is on a deeper level than that
06:52 PM Emil: But like
06:52 PM tpw_rules: but it's the risc that has the branch prediction
06:52 PM tpw_rules: not the x64
06:52 PM Emil: branch prediction contributes like
06:52 PM cehteh: either way .. intel now did a shitloads of bullshit ... first the ME fuckup, now that
06:52 PM Emil: so so fucking much
06:52 PM tpw_rules: i mean the report has an RE of the branch prediction
06:52 PM tpw_rules: cehteh: amd did the same
06:52 PM tpw_rules: and arm
06:53 PM tpw_rules: aren't computers good?
06:53 PM tpw_rules: we should ban networking
06:53 PM cehteh: yeah .. maybe they come to senses now and be more careful in future, (ok i have some doubts about that)
06:53 PM Casper: cehteh: amd also have the ME equivalent, it just didn't came out yet, but expert knows it's there, just, unspoken of yet
06:53 PM tpw_rules: i mean processors are so complex it's literally impossible
06:54 PM MrFahrenheit: it's not unspoken, it's called psp
06:54 PM tpw_rules: i mean the entire reason processors exist today is that they're trying to do the absolute maximum to cheat behind your back
06:54 PM tpw_rules: they just got caught. and they'll get caught again
06:54 PM cehteh: Casper: amd ME equivalent is somewhat different, it doesnt open its own web server irrc
06:54 PM cehteh: but i am also not convinced its save, only having slight hopes its not as grave as intels ME
06:54 PM Casper: cehteh: afaik, the intel ME do not, it is just a possible function
06:55 PM Casper: the ME thing got overexagerated, seriously
06:55 PM cehteh: yes .. but the problem is that this possible function is not reliably disableable
06:55 PM cehteh: nah imo its the most serious thing
06:55 PM Casper: "it's minix! it can do this and that and that and that and this too and that and that, because it is minix and can be upgraded and and and and and"
06:56 PM cehteh: because if one *really* tries he could takeover a system without the user having any chance to detect it
06:56 PM MrFahrenheit: Casper, the fact it can't be disabled ever, and it shuts down your cpu in 30 minutes if you don't feed it firmware means it's suspicious as hell
06:56 PM Casper: nobody actually came with any real proof that anything is open, or that it can do anything beside initialise the machine
06:56 PM cehteh: and its security by obscurity, there is no verification of any claim, nothing open, nothing reviewable
06:57 PM cehteh: that doesnt give confidence
06:57 PM Casper: MrFahrenheit: what? what the heck are you talking about for the 30 minutes?
06:57 PM cehteh: and thats the biggiest problem, there is no proof because they keep it secret, and thats the only layer of protectiion we have
06:58 PM MrFahrenheit: strip the ME firmware from your bios and your intel cpu will shut down after 30 minutes
06:58 PM cehteh: but i wait for the day someoone hacks a cool machine level debugger into the ME, then it becomes useable :)
07:00 PM MrFahrenheit: what about that usb jtag thing that was revealed recently?
07:00 PM cehteh: yes
07:43 PM MrFahrenheit: looks like spectre was implemented in javascript allowing it to read the running process' memory - bad news for firefox
