[00:41:29] <WormFood> Any chance any of you can ID this hall effect sensor? --> http://wormfood.net/pictures/hall_effect_sensor.jpg It has just a single digit (7), and 3 dots....which I don't recognize as a manufacturer logo.
[01:02:16] <tzanger> WormFood: any luck picking a few of comparable size from digikey and looking at the datasheet?
[01:02:39] <WormFood> well, I know what the pinout is, from the datasheet on the IC it's connected to
[01:02:46] <WormFood> but that is the best I could figure out.
[01:03:07] <WormFood> I was hoping, this wouldn't turn into a hunt, and that maybe someone might already have knowledge of this
[01:03:34] <WormFood> I'm not sure how I'd use it, with an AVR
[01:10:17] <tzanger> most hall effect transistors need a pullup and yank the collector to emitter (usually ground) dont they?
[01:56:36] <WormFood> tzanger, yes, but this is not a 3-wire hall effect sensor, it's a 4-wire one
[01:56:47] <WormFood> this one works a little differently
[01:57:06] <WormFood> it has an in+ in- a hall bias, or something like that, and ground.
[01:57:41] <WormFood> anyways, I gotta get going to a customer's location, to fix their damn router, because they can't follow simple directions, over the phone
[02:05:24] <megal0maniac_afk> WormFood: Don't you just love on-site work? :P
[02:06:03] <WormFood> oh yeah, where I have to be prepared to bring 1/2 my shop with me, just in case.
[02:06:53] <WormFood> so, lets see....I should probably bring a computer, network cables, my tablet....on yeah, on top of all that, I have to bring my 1 1/2 year old daughter with me.
[02:09:35] <megal0maniac_afk> I had that on Monday. Drove 100km out to a client because "the projector doesn't work". Took half the workshop with, turned out they'd pulled the VGA socket out of the power skirting so I needed leather man and soldering iron
[02:10:21] <WormFood> you know, that was exactly the type of scenario I was thinking of, when I mentioned that....the times I've needed my soldering iron, and didn't have it.
[02:10:59] <megal0maniac_afk> But it's still better than the clients who know a little bit, but not enough to be helpful
[02:11:18] <WormFood> What is worse, is when they try to fix it themselves first.
[02:11:34] <megal0maniac_afk> WormFood: Always bring everything(tm)
[02:12:37] <megal0maniac_afk> Even your children... (??)
[02:12:51] <WormFood> I have a butane powered soldering iron, back in USA, that I like to take with me for on-site work, when I was doing radios (I used to professionally fix 2-way radios)
[02:13:38] <jacekowski> i don't really like gas powered irons
[02:13:56] <megal0maniac_afk> Got one of those in the outside broadcast kit. I really like it
[02:13:57] <WormFood> my "gf" promised me, after Chinese New Year, she'd help find someone to watch the baby while I go out to do on-site work...not that long, maybe a few hours, at most....still hasn't found anyone to watch her for me.
[02:14:07] <WormFood> why don't you like gas irons?
[02:14:17] <jacekowski> no temperature control
[02:14:24] <WormFood> I can solder on PL-259 connectors in the field with one.
[02:14:25] <jacekowski> well, almost non
[02:14:26] <jacekowski> none
[02:14:38] <WormFood> I don't know what you've used, my irons have awesome temp control
[02:14:51] <WormFood> I can turn them down really low, or really high...I've been really impressed with them
[02:14:57] <megal0maniac_afk> jacekowski: Takes some getting used to, but they do have
[02:15:07] <jacekowski> it's easier to find a socket and plug in normal soldering iron
[02:15:10] <megal0maniac_afk> And they heat up very quickly
[02:15:14] <WormFood> IN THE FIELD?
[02:15:22] <megal0maniac_afk> UP A TREE?
[02:15:22] <jacekowski> yes
[02:15:29] <jacekowski> extension lead + inverter
[02:15:53] <megal0maniac_afk> And bill for an extra hour of faffing
[02:15:58] <megal0maniac_afk> I like it
[02:16:28] <WormFood> it's easier to run an extension cord up a tree, than to learn how to use a butane soldering iron
[02:16:42] <jacekowski> besides, gas explodes
[02:16:50] <WormFood> it does?
[02:16:53] <WormFood> when?
[02:17:04] <megal0maniac_afk> Electricity electricutes
[02:17:18] <WormFood> out of all the years, I've used a butane soldering iron, not only have I never had a problem with it, but I've never even heard of one exploding
[02:18:03] <megal0maniac_afk> Lighters don't explode in peoples' pockets, butane soldering irons don't either
[02:18:40] <WormFood> ok, so the converter thingy in the tip, goes bad, but they still work, even when they're "bad"...it's just a bitch to get it started....that is why I carry a little butane torch, to put that flame right inside the tip, and that fucker lights up fast using that technique. The sparker thingy on the cap, is shit, except when the tip is brand new
[02:18:55] <WormFood> megal0maniac_afk, he must be trolling
[02:19:31] <WormFood> or, he only has experience with horrible pieces of shit for soldering irons
[02:19:53] <megal0maniac_afk> I would like an Antex Gascat
[02:25:52] <jacekowski> i was looking recently at battery powered irons
[02:26:32] <jacekowski> but i'm not sure how good it would be powered just by two AA batteries
[02:27:47] <megal0maniac_afk> Heating is likely the most inefficient use of electricity. AA soldering iron seems like a terrible idea
[02:28:09] <WormFood> I think it's a great idea
[02:28:16] * WormFood owns stock in battery companies
[02:28:19] <Thrashbarg> lol 25W out of a few AA batteries would mean lots of dead AA batteries
[02:28:49] <WormFood> but it's easier according to jacekowski, since butane is so deadly dangerous, and hard to use
[02:28:57] <megal0maniac_afk> jacekowski: http://www.antex.co.uk/soldering/gas-powered-irons/gascat-60-kit/
[02:29:39] <megal0maniac_afk> Have that. ~$50 gets you a portable iron with hot air and FLAME!
[02:34:18] <megal0maniac_afk> And a hot knife for cutting cheese
[02:34:27] <megal0maniac_afk> or butter
[02:35:06] <megal0maniac_afk> Only the small butters you get at restuarants though
[03:33:07] <Phinxy> +
[06:14:57] <Lambda_Aurigae> I have one of those radio-shack battery powered soldering irons that were so hot about 6 or 7 years ago...
[06:15:44] <Lambda_Aurigae> it uses 4 AA batteries and is a conduction heater....it puts a current across two non-stick contacts...flow enough current through the solder and it melts.
[06:16:41] <Lambda_Aurigae> crap for real soldering though as you only heat the solder and not the contacts you are soldering to unless you can get the contacts to touch the two metal points with solder between them.
[07:01:30] <antto> i guess cli() and sei() don't care about nesting, right?
[07:03:12] <antto> void somefunc() { cli(); <do stuff>; sei(); } ... cli(); <stuff>; somefunc(); /* ouch */ <morestuff>; sei();
[12:01:00] <bezoka> Is hard to learn assembly for atmegas?
[12:13:41] <tzanger> no not really
[12:13:50] <tzanger> do you have a specific need for assembly or are you just curious?
[12:17:08] <bezoka> I want learn assembly ;)
[12:17:17] <bezoka> for fun, for curious ;)
[12:17:43] <antto> ...and that's how h4x0rz are born
[12:25:58] <bezoka> http://pastebin.com/n9Vh26Ka
[12:26:00] <bezoka> is that good?
[13:00:56] <bezoka> I wrote my first program in assembly
[13:34:37] <Tom_itx> what did it do?
[14:00:25] <bezoka> diode lights
[14:00:56] <bezoka> brb
[14:04:08] <bezoka> I back
[14:04:27] <megal0maniac> Yay
[16:35:19] <hotch> Does anyone know of a good set of glasses with a magnifying glass? Basically the more AVRs I have/learn, the harder it is to grab one (the writing is so small!)
[16:48:18] <Tom_itx> i use a binocular scope for soldering them
[16:48:42] <Tom_itx> you can get jeweler's glasses
[16:48:57] <bss36504> I hate working under magnification personally
[16:49:11] <Tom_itx> how old are you?
[16:49:15] <bss36504> 19
[16:49:17] <bss36504> lol
[16:49:22] <bss36504> 20/20 vision
[16:49:24] <Tom_itx> your day will come soon enough :)
[16:49:46] <bss36504> haha I know. I’ll probably lose the steady hands too
[16:51:28] <Tom_itx> http://tom-itx.dyndns.org:81/~webpage/scope/scope2.jpg
[16:52:17] <bss36504> there ya go
[16:52:35] <Tom_itx> quite handy for soldering smt
[16:53:08] <bss36504> Anybody done any custom design with a Xilinx spartan 3?
[16:53:23] <Tom_itx> not really
[16:53:34] <Tom_itx> played with xilinx a bit
[16:53:58] <Tom_itx> on an old digilent board
[16:53:59] <bss36504> Its ridiculous. I cant even figure out where to put the clock into the thing. I dont know if I need a full external clock generator, or if a crystal will do.
[16:54:15] <Tom_itx> http://tom-itx.dyndns.org:81/~webpage/temp/xilinx1.jpg
[16:54:47] <Tom_itx> you could ask PCW in #linuxcnc, he does quite a bit with them
[16:54:58] <Tom_itx> aka mesanet.com
[16:55:19] <Tom_itx> or a few others in there
[16:55:28] <bss36504> thanks for the tip
[16:56:07] <Tom_itx> just ask
[16:59:12] <bss36504> You know who I havent seen on here in forever, besides N1njaneer, is beaky
[17:08:33] <bss36504> is there a clockout fuse/pin on the xmegas?
[17:09:18] <Tom_itx> i'm not sure about xmegas
[17:09:23] <Tom_itx> probably
[17:34:11] <hotch> Tom_itx: 32. Hah just saw this: “your day will come soon enough”
[17:34:40] <hotch> I imagine Tom_itx wearing binoculars putting together ISPs :)
[17:36:02] <Tom_itx> toaster oven
