01:33 AM Deejay: moin
01:50 AM lcnc-relay: <TurBoss> morning
01:52 AM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Mornin
04:32 AM lcnc-relay: <Olli (RIO)@> moin
04:32 AM lcnc-relay: <Olli (RIO)@> i have my first own smart-serial device 🙂
04:33 AM lcnc-relay: <Olli (RIO)@> using https://github.com/fdarling/mesa-smartserial-device-template on an esp32 with some changes, works
04:52 AM lcnc-relay: <Travis Farmer@> Morning
05:06 AM Tom_L: morning
06:31 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:07 AM NetPipe: N1N73ND0
09:17 AM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> found an interesting book on RTOS programming strategies for embedded stuff. So many interesting things to learn about, but instead I have to fix the backed up sink drain >.<
09:17 AM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> also, g'mornin
09:17 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:18 AM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> I have now been eaten by the Djinn for not greeting people properly before speaking
09:29 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> RTOS!
09:31 AM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> just been thinking about the embedded projects I've done so far, and feeling like I should learn how to do them better. I've made stuff that works, but there's a lot of "by guess and by golly" and a certain amount of surprise when things work. (and confuddlement when it randomly fails in strange ways)
09:41 AM _unreal: ok just loaded the new batteries into 4 of the 5 remaining APC's. the big one is left but I stupidly seperated the internal wiring that connectes the quick connect battery setup from the big unit. VERY stupid on my part. but then again that was done in haste back in the old house being rushed out
09:42 AM _unreal: now I'm trying to figure out which machines will need what for power
09:46 AM NetPipe: https://blazecan.com/products/roller new beltless rolling machine they need all metal version i think.
09:47 AM _unreal: what is that for?
09:47 AM _unreal: and interesting my end mill will consume upto 10amps 120a/c
09:50 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:50 AM _unreal: hum I'm not sure what draws more amps
09:51 AM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> _unreal: rolling cigarettes, I should think
09:51 AM _unreal: my DIY cnc machine or my endmill
09:51 AM * _unreal not a smoker aside from a cigar a few time a year
09:51 AM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> same
09:51 AM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> not anti weed, in fact I have always voted to legalize. Just not my thing
09:52 AM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> kind of a cool mechanism, though
09:52 AM _unreal: I'm trying to figure out which APC battery backups to put on what machines
09:52 AM _unreal: I have ONE mega one that is really a rack system
09:53 AM _unreal: and and like 6 at or below the 1500 range
09:53 AM _unreal: I'm trying to solve what machine gets the big one
09:54 AM _unreal: My cnc mill the spindle I dont have an exact power range but seems like it can draw upto 15 amps
09:55 AM _unreal: I'm half tempted to split up the PSU setup in the control box to go to 2 apc'S one for motors, one for spindle and one for PC
09:57 AM _unreal: Main goal is to just not have a job destroyed by a power outtage
09:57 AM _unreal: which I get a lot of BLINK OUT power issues
10:14 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/qogktYtGU8FG15ck8
10:15 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> yes - it is run with an extention cord.. Because the electrician hasn't gotten to putting an outlet in yet... lol
10:17 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I really should see if I can get the 7.5kw generator working
10:24 AM Tom_L: screw compressor?
10:27 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> umm
10:28 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> yes - pretty sure
10:28 AM Tom_L: cute one
10:28 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I think we only have a piston compressor for backup
10:28 AM Tom_L: my bud had one in a room by itself. it was huge but noisy
10:29 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> this was the only place we could think of putting a server rack as a backup if my server room burned down lol
10:30 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> it is loud in there - but they keep it temperature constant
10:32 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I think you are seeing 2 - the third one is a chiller for a laser
10:32 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> 2 screw compressors
10:34 AM Tom_L: i figured the one with the loovers was an air drier
10:35 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> nope. chiller for a 1kw laser
10:37 AM Tom_L: here soon i'm switching the mill over to an ethernet card
10:37 AM Tom_L: with the rpi5
10:37 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> nice!
10:37 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> it works great.
10:38 AM Tom_L: same config, the 7i80 is a drop in for 7i90
10:38 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> 4 things running ethernet here.
10:38 AM Tom_L: i somewhat hate to do it since we're testing things with the parport too
10:38 AM Tom_L: but we can't find a solution
10:39 AM Tom_L: it's a very odd one
10:39 AM _unreal: ?
10:39 AM _unreal: whats odd?
10:39 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> yes - the parport needed to be exactly right to run epp
10:39 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> https://media1.tenor.com/m/H_Hk2NOPlD0AAAAC/club-dorothee-premiers-baisers.gif
10:39 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I was one of the first to get ethernet working...
10:40 AM Tom_L: this isn't about that
10:40 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> oh?
10:40 AM Tom_L: in flex the probe routines will just stop in a random place on a machine running a parallel port
10:40 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> huh. that is odd..
10:40 AM Tom_L: i reverted back a few versions and it works there
10:41 AM Tom_L: another guy had the same issue
10:41 AM Tom_L: running a bob along with a pcie card
10:41 AM Tom_L: all the bob had on it was limits, spindle & probe signal
10:42 AM Tom_L: it doesn't do it anywhere else
10:42 AM _unreal: error logs?
10:42 AM Tom_L: no errors
10:42 AM Tom_L: nothing to indicate a problem
10:43 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> race condition maybe
10:43 AM _unreal: then there is clearly an error and the fail isnt designed to be reoported
10:43 AM Tom_L: it's very difficult do reproduce
10:43 AM _unreal: Tom_L, your talking computer level issue only right not hardware mill/machine issue
10:43 AM Tom_L: right
10:44 AM _unreal: what is the state of the PC when it just stops?
10:44 AM Tom_L: nothing wrong with the probe code or the gui
10:44 AM _unreal: so it just haults like the job is done
10:46 AM _unreal: Tom_L, I just typed this into google. got some interesting results
10:46 AM _unreal: what kind of code issue could likely cause a pc to hault a task sending pulses to the parallel port before the task is done with out an error shown or logged. just stop like the job is complete.
10:47 AM Tom_L: it isn't sending anything to the parport
10:48 AM Tom_L: the 2nd case, the bob has a probe, limits and spindle on it
10:49 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I vaugly remember jepler having problems with speeding up probing with a mesa card.. LIke it would just not work. but that was a long time ago
10:49 AM Tom_L: the probe isn't tripped
10:49 AM _unreal: ? not sure I follow, my understanding is a pulse train is running sending pulses to the par port. then just stops. or are you talking in test loop loop device not real par port.
10:49 AM Tom_L: any other setup works fine
10:49 AM Tom_L: unless you plan to set up a test i'm not going to bother explaining it
10:49 AM _unreal: are we talking pc par port or are we talking mesa par port?
10:50 AM Tom_L: mine is the other one is not
10:50 AM Tom_L: just stops mid motion
10:51 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> but only involving the printer port. (so far)
10:51 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> wierd
10:51 AM Tom_L: not at the end of an axis move either
10:51 AM lfluffywof is now known as fluffywolf
10:51 AM _unreal: Incorrect Loop Condition: The most common culprit is a logic error in the loop that generates the pulses. The loop might be set to run a specific number of times, but the calculation for the number of required pulses is wrong (e.g., off-by-one error, or calculating based on incorrect input data). The loop terminates because its condition is met, even though the physical task is not complete.
10:51 AM _unreal: Premature Exit or Break Statement: There might be a conditional break, return, or exit() statement within the pulse generation loop that is being triggered unexpectedly by some data condition or state change, causing the program to jump out of the loop and end the task.
10:52 AM Tom_L: i reverted to 1.2.1 and that version works the other fella had to revert to 1.2.0
10:52 AM Tom_L: the only thing the gui is doing is updating the velocity etc labels
10:53 AM Tom_L: nothing stands out in those over newer versions
10:54 AM _unreal: really sounds like a simple error in the coding .c .h
10:55 AM _unreal: throwing an out of bounds conflict when conditions are met
10:57 AM _unreal: does it reproduce if the same task is repeated. or is it 100% random
10:58 AM Tom_L: random
10:58 AM Tom_L: seldom in the same spot
11:06 AM _unreal: Tom_L, I can only see 3 possible things causing it. first would be picking up noise on a limit or probe (I've had this be an issue and is very random). Could be a LinuxCNC Latency/jitter issue because of some cpu load that happened, would suggest seeing if you can capture ALLL cpu tasks that are happening just before the random halt. Or it could be a coding issue messing with the counter/timing.
11:07 AM _unreal: If its not those then its out of my league.
11:08 AM _unreal: I dont know what else would be a strong cause for random error
11:09 AM _unreal is now known as _unreal_
11:36 AM roycroft: sunspots
11:51 AM _unreal_: roycroft, stop staring at the sun
11:51 AM _unreal_: ve7it, sup
11:52 AM _unreal_: ve7it, I'm working on getting the drivers all wired up into the new enclosure
11:59 AM _unreal_: ve7it, ?
12:06 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> moin
12:07 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> Tom_L: sounds frustrating.
12:33 PM ve7it: _unreal_, good afternoon... (morning here)
12:33 PM _unreal_: hi
12:34 PM _unreal_: ve7it, dont know if or how many post post's youve seen from me in the past week
12:34 PM _unreal_: but I'm working on getting the dspic servo drives setup into the new control box and getting everything setup
12:35 PM _unreal_: I just finished printing off a bunch of documents with wiring pinout aids etc.....
12:35 PM ve7it: I am burning up brain cells trying to learn fpga programming... its finally starting to click.
12:35 PM _unreal_: nice
12:36 PM _unreal_: I'll let you know when I have everything setup
12:36 PM ve7it: I havent been on here much, but I have seen most of your messages... It should be fun to get those servos turning some metal
12:36 PM _unreal_: ya
12:37 PM _unreal_: I dont know if I damaged anything in the past or if there was something setup wrong. but we will figur it out
12:37 PM _unreal_: I'm setting it up so each drive can be tested
12:39 PM ve7it: I just got some pcb cards back from jlcpcb.... they sure do a bang up job... ordering was painless and even with the cheap shipping, they turned around in 2 weeks. 10 3x4" boards including shipping for $15USD...
12:40 PM _unreal_: nice
12:40 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> nice!
12:40 PM _unreal_: I've yet to order pcbs ever. but then again I've not needed anything YET that I couldnt do on the mill
12:40 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> I'm usually in too much of a hurry, have just done the mask and etch
12:41 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> but that's a great price
12:41 PM ve7it: I dont think there will be any additional tarrif hits, but with the shipping companies, you never know what might show up in 3 months
12:41 PM _unreal_: heh
12:42 PM _unreal_: ve7it, I just paid a 450 tarrif for some panel pc's
12:42 PM _unreal_: the one's I orded from china sell in the USA for like $6k each
12:42 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> had to pass on a 3d mouse on ebay. Canada to us tariff
12:42 PM _unreal_: got them for $500 each direct
12:42 PM _unreal_: 3d mouse?
12:43 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> for cad
12:43 PM _unreal_: ya I have been looking at them hard
12:43 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> I may have to just keep spending a bit of extra time, til a good deal comes along
12:43 PM roycroft: in case any of you haven't been following my shipment from japan issue, what i've learned is that if a parcel is shipped to me from overseas, and it cannot be delivered, and is returned to the shipper, *i* am liable for paying duty and tariff on the item
12:43 PM _unreal_: I want one but I just paid $1500 for the 2 panel pc's, 6k for taxes, and thousands so far for my car repair
12:43 PM _unreal_: I'm kind of tired of paying
12:44 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> yeah, that's a lot of hits in a short period
12:44 PM ve7it: I used to cnc my PCBs, but the jlcpcb are so much nicer and since most of my designs are getting smaller with surface mount stuff, the jlcpcb path is working well.
12:44 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> ve7it: did you get finished boards with components, or just the pcbs themselves?
12:44 PM _unreal_: lesliet, ya figured to because I had a good month between clients and work and made about $10k only for it all to poof
12:44 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> probably a stupid question, at that price
12:45 PM _unreal_: ve7it, when I get my $ from the sale of my fathers LAST house (probate hell) I'm looking to get a fiber laser
12:46 PM _unreal_: I could get one now but I'd rather not dip into savings
12:46 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> I want one, but hard to justify it just yet
12:47 PM _unreal_: it will pay for its self real fast for me. me being in the marine industry, a lot of people want me to make stainless label what ever stuff
12:47 PM ve7it: just the PCB.... I thought of trying out the assembly service, but I had most of the parts already. It takes a little extra time to make a BOM using the jlcpcb available parts.
12:47 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> would be lovely to be able to strip paint and rust without chemicals. Still don't want to breathe the fumes, obviously, but I can deal with that better than the nasty cancer chems for stripping
12:48 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> probably going to end up with a forced air respirator before long
12:49 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> ve7it: I still have some trepidation about assembling surface mount boards. Not equipped for it, and it's a new thing for me
12:51 PM roycroft: a steady hand, a fine tip on the soldering iron, and a soldering station with good temperature control make it pretty straightforward to solder surface mount components by hand
12:52 PM roycroft: and for older people, eyeball assist in the form of a big magnifying glass :)
12:52 PM ve7it: its actually easier than through hole if you design with reasonable sized parts. A 10 to 15 power binocular microscope has been a real help for working with the small stuff. I was using 1206 sized parts, but my last board design used 805... we will have to see if that turns into a fight.
12:54 PM _unreal_: I got my dad's two PCB hot plates. I've yet to use them
12:54 PM Tom_L: when i was doing it i had a binocular scope
12:54 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> roycroft: already rocking the visor magnifiers...
12:55 PM Tom_L: 0204 was about as small as i'd go
12:55 PM Tom_L: but generally larger
12:55 PM ve7it: I havent got the gear for solder paste and reflow oven, but I would probably just use jlcpcb to assemble most of the boards loaded with small parts as I dont have the room for stencils, reflow ovens etc.
12:55 PM Tom_L: i had a reflow oven i made
12:56 PM Tom_L: and had a few masks made up
12:56 PM ve7it: Tom_L, yea... I have been eyeing up the wifes toaster oven!
12:57 PM Tom_L: me and a guy in Au did that project together
12:57 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/toaster_oven/toaster_oven_index.php
12:57 PM _unreal_: mmmmmmMMMM toaster oven :)
12:58 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> how hot do reflow ovens need to go?
12:58 PM Tom_L: they have a profile and it's different for lead and unleaded
12:58 PM Tom_L: unleaded is hotter
12:58 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> a profile like ramp and hold
12:58 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> ?
12:59 PM Tom_L: i insulated mine for efficiency
12:59 PM Tom_L: yes
12:59 PM roycroft: there are some small reflow ovens in the $300 range
12:59 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> just curious. I have one I set up with a pid for powder coating, but I'm sure the temps are a lot lower
12:59 PM roycroft: not that much more than a good toaster oven with a good pid controller
12:59 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/boards/reflow/cooking.JPG
12:59 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> and beefed up insulation, I would think
01:00 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/boards/reflow/cooling.jpg
01:00 PM roycroft: 300c is the top temp of a reflow oven
01:00 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> kk
01:00 PM _unreal_: I do have a hot air reflow plate but I've never used it yet
01:00 PM Tom_L: i did ~200 of those with an iron before i made the oven
01:01 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> https://jauriarts.org/_heisenbridge/media/jauriarts.org/IjYaslssEbshXrZPGpbTdjSb/FsCu879do0g/pid_control_on_coating_oven.jpg
01:01 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> yikes!
01:01 PM Tom_L: 4 element oven is preferred
01:01 PM Tom_L: more uniform heat
01:02 PM ve7it: A reflow soldering oven's temperature is typically between 220C and 250C (428F to 482F), but the exact temperature depends on the specific solder paste used. For lead-free solder, a peak temperature of235C to 250C is common, while leaded solder requires a lower range of 215C to 230C.
01:02 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> ok, so within a realistic range for my extra toaster oven, without abusing it much
01:03 PM roycroft: i just got a call with the cid "cruz4senate"
01:03 PM roycroft: i rejected it :)
01:03 PM roycroft: wrong state
01:03 PM roycroft: wrong everything else
01:03 PM Tom_L: don't cook with it after using it to reflow :)
01:03 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> so glad I kept my phone number from another state. Now I know anything from that area code is probably scams
01:03 PM ve7it: what... I cant make a tuna melt while my PCB cooks?
01:03 PM Tom_L: it's up to you
01:04 PM roycroft: sure you can
01:04 PM roycroft: but in a separate oven
01:04 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> Tom_L: oh, yeah.. never even considered using it for food. The one I showed is for powder coating lead
01:04 PM Tom_L: i used to fry hot dogs with an extension cord...
01:04 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> rofl
01:04 PM ve7it: I think I have lost a few brain cells in the last 70 years
01:05 PM Tom_L: it works
01:05 PM * roycroft is waiting for usps to arrive
01:05 PM * Tom_L is too
01:05 PM Tom_L: mesa delivery
01:05 PM roycroft: i have a standoff for my new extension ladder and a surveillance cam arriving today
01:05 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> ooh
01:05 PM roycroft: i want to get testing the new camera system, so i know how many and what kind of cameras to order
01:05 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> I should head out to the shop, and get the mill motor finished up and installed
01:05 PM roycroft: the cam i'm getting today i'll mount on a board that can be moved around
01:06 PM roycroft: so i can test it in various locations to determine where i need them
01:06 PM Tom_L: tie one to your cat to see where it goes
01:06 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> they've gotten so much better in the last few years
01:06 PM * roycroft was kind of spooked on finding out there's a burglar in the neighborhood
01:06 PM roycroft: my cats are indoor cats
01:06 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> but our perps at work just cover up their faces with bandanas
01:07 PM roycroft: i'm getting a hardware ai object detector for the nvr that i'm building for the cameras
01:07 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> that and a hoodie, you're not getting a positive id
01:07 PM roycroft: it can tell the difference between a cat and a racoon
01:07 PM roycroft: and send me alerts telling me which it sees
01:07 PM ve7it: ID is best done at autopsy
01:08 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> nodnod
01:08 PM roycroft: lesliet: it helps to know that they're there, even if you can't positively identify them
01:08 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> yeah, lets you know when to trip the claymores
01:08 PM roycroft: when this system is set up properly, i should get an alert any time a human enters the property
01:08 PM roycroft: the ai detector hardware knows about delivery services as well
01:09 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> note to self, need to work on getting a backhoe
01:09 PM roycroft: so i can get an alert that says "ups truck arriving"
01:09 PM roycroft: unfortunately i think it's going to take about 8 cameras to cover the whole property
01:10 PM roycroft: i wish i could do it with fewer, but it does not seem like that's going to be possible
01:10 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> roycroft: look into blueiris for the cams
01:10 PM Tom_L: do wifi cameras run on batteries?
01:11 PM Tom_L: how do you power them remotely
01:11 PM _unreal_: Tom_L, depends on the setup
01:11 PM _unreal_: ether solar/battery or remote psu.
01:11 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> was gonna say, good applicationb for solar
01:11 PM roycroft: i don't know
01:12 PM roycroft: i'm not going to use wifi cameras
01:12 PM roycroft: wifi jammers are standard kit for burglars these days
01:12 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> https://blueirissoftware.com/
01:12 PM roycroft: i'm using poe wired cameras
01:12 PM _unreal_: Tom_L, I would use POE cameras if anything
01:12 PM Tom_L: i was just curious
01:12 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> I have one outside cam, and it's POE
01:12 PM roycroft: i'll be using frigate for the nvr
01:12 PM roycroft: open source nvr software that integrates with home assistant
01:13 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> any more I add will be POE
01:14 PM roycroft: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C6L7YQHK
01:14 PM roycroft: that's what i ordered for initial testing
01:14 PM Tom_L: i live in a relatively safe neighborhood... all ther robbers come from here
01:14 PM roycroft: the 8Mp IR version
01:14 PM roycroft: this is an almost crime-free city
01:14 PM roycroft: one of the reasons i moved here
01:15 PM roycroft: and one of the reasons i did not make a security/surveillance system a priority
01:15 PM roycroft: but with an active burglar in the neighborhood, and with the economy getting worse (encouraging property crime), my priorities have shifted
01:17 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> so far, it's been good, here. Out in the country a bit, and the property has some obvious visual cues, like the shot up silhouette targets with very small groups.
01:17 PM roycroft: there are some reolink cams on sale for black friday at amazon that are affordable with that sale
01:17 PM roycroft: and reolink are pretty highly regarded
01:18 PM roycroft: i probably would have gotten one of those if they had been on sale when i ordered the marquis
01:18 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> we've had one series of incidents, that I'm pretty sure was just a kid, since it happened right about the time school would let out, just petty vandalism. Stopped after we put up cameras and no trespassing signs
01:18 PM Tom_L: 4k?
01:18 PM roycroft: but marquis are also good cams
01:18 PM roycroft: yes, 4k
01:18 PM roycroft: security folks say that cameras are a bigger deterrant than alarm systems
01:19 PM roycroft: and mine will be mounted where they are difficult to vandalize
01:19 PM roycroft: and i intend to cover the entire property, most of it redundantly
01:19 PM roycroft: someone was just at my front porch and did not knock, so i'm thinking my stuff is here
01:19 PM Tom_L: any time there is an 'incident' in the neighborhood, i get a knock on the door by the PD
01:20 PM Tom_L: i just ask if they have a thumbdrive
01:20 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> lol
01:20 PM Tom_L: they know
01:21 PM roycroft: the ladder standoff is here, but the camera is not here yet
01:21 PM roycroft: it's out for delivery, though, and may arrive later
01:22 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> gonna let the heater run for a bit
01:22 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> should be a productive day, though
01:22 PM roycroft: i should turn the heater on in the shop for a bit
01:22 PM roycroft: i have some jig work to do for the laser
01:22 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> tis a bit nippy
01:23 PM roycroft: and i have to get this ladder standoff installed
01:23 PM roycroft: i also ordered a leg leveler kit for the ladder
01:23 PM roycroft: i have almost as much invested in accessories as i paid for the ladder itself now
01:23 PM roycroft: but i've had two falls that resulted in hospitalization in the past two years
01:23 PM roycroft: i do not want to repeat that ever again
01:24 PM roycroft: so no sketch stuff with a ladder, period
01:26 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> oof, yeah. My only ladder fall, so far, only injured my pride
01:27 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> luckily, it was outside the shop, so no pointy steel objects to break my fall
01:30 PM roycroft: my old extension ladder is a 16' class 2 aluminium one
01:31 PM roycroft: it's always felt kind of sketch, even when using it on a level, concrete base
01:31 PM roycroft: the new one is a 20' class 1a fiberglass one, and it is a lot more sturdy
01:36 PM * Tom_L adds another mesa card the pile
01:56 PM _unreal_: where any of you interested in the slide rulers I have. I believe I have 3 of them. one even has a leather case
01:56 PM _unreal_: I dont know how to use them and have no need/reason to so far as I know.
02:08 PM roycroft: i have several, otherwise i'd probably be interested
02:08 PM roycroft: slide rules are awesome
02:08 PM roycroft: and if you're skilled at using them, they are faster than a calculator for many operations
02:09 PM * roycroft just had lunch, and heads out to work on the ladder and shop projects
02:14 PM _unreal_: roycroft, when I get to it I'll take a few photos
02:55 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> progress
02:55 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> https://jauriarts.org/_heisenbridge/media/jauriarts.org/zkIaIThnKLQdQvsXMpVlFAXa/TXWGtz1Pb3U/head_back_on_the_stand.JPG
02:56 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> next up are re-bushing the varispeed sleeves and figuring out what I'm going to do with the back gear that has corrosion damage
03:04 PM _unreal_: ve7it, with that I can claim the power distribution board for the dspic servo boards has been installed into the shell
03:04 PM _unreal_: what a PIA that was
03:05 PM _unreal_: ve7it, by my design its a PCB that is a multi rail block with terminals so I can feed the +25v / -25v and 0
03:06 PM Tom_L: better have thick traces to handle the current
03:07 PM _unreal_: they are like 8mm wide and lead
03:07 PM _unreal_: leaded
03:07 PM _unreal_: 4mils copper too if mem serves?
03:26 PM _unreal_: ve7it, is shielding or filtering suggestible for the +/- motor leads of the dspic (Ferrite Beads/Chokes, wire shielding..? I'm sure ceramic capacitors (decoupling capacitors) across the motor leads are required.
03:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> andypugh@ I don't think I can do anything with the poll
03:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> Or I am just being stupid
03:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> https://forum.linuxcnc.org/29-forum-announcements/57844-linuxcnc-hardware-survey#338840
03:57 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> You're blacklisted skunkworks@ because you have everything
03:58 PM ve7it: _unreal_, not really any requirements... drive is analog constant current, so there is little switching noise to worry about.
03:58 PM _unreal_: ok
03:59 PM _unreal_: thing I do need to order is shielded phone cord for the motor encoders
04:00 PM _unreal_: god I'm still getting use to not only owning my own home but..... having a master bathroom.
04:01 PM _unreal_: just got up to spit, started walking to the kitchen... and had a errrrreekek shrieking breaks moment as I remembered the convenience I have.
04:05 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> But yeah, andypugh@ , borked for me too
04:05 PM lcnc-relay: <andypugh@> That might explain why there are 180 views and only 3 votes.
04:06 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Forum seems unusually unbroken today
04:07 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Responsive even I might tentatively say
04:07 PM lcnc-relay: <andypugh@> Does anyone have a recommendation of a place to run a survey like this?
04:07 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Is there some sort of user role setting in the forum poll?
04:08 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Or timeout maybe
04:08 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> It's probably because it's in announcments
04:09 PM lcnc-relay: <andypugh@> It may be that ordinary users can't vote in a poll in the "Announcements" section.
04:10 PM lcnc-relay: <andypugh@> Which seems a bit daft.
04:12 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> I understand the poll is really about which hw suppkrt to axe, but I'd be curious to know how.many ethercat users there aee by now
04:27 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I have access to some ethercat drives - but they are 480? Don't know if I want to play with them
04:30 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> I bought a bunch of ethercat stuff, hut haven't tried it yet
04:30 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> All beckhoff stuff so you can just stack em up
04:32 PM lcnc-relay: <andypugh@> Can you vote here? https://forum.linuxcnc.org/27-driver-boards/57844-linuxcnc-hardware-survey#338840
04:34 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> andypugh@: Yup
04:34 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I can vote also
04:40 PM lcnc-relay: <andypugh@> I added EtherCAT, though in the context of my current work that doesn't need attention.
04:46 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> Thanks Andy
04:59 PM lcnc-relay: <Olli (RIO)@> https://cserver1.multixmedia.org/sserial1.png
05:00 PM lcnc-relay: <Olli (RIO)@> https://cserver1.multixmedia.org/sserial2.png
05:00 PM lcnc-relay: <Olli (RIO)@> 😎
05:02 PM lcnc-relay: <Olli (RIO)@> now i can build esp32 smart-serial devices (GPIO In/Out only at the moment)
05:05 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Well done!
05:08 PM Tom_L: andypugh, on the download page "LinuxCNC Uspace 2.9.7 arm64 (Pi)" is 404
05:10 PM Tom_L: as is the Dev ARM64 link
05:13 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:16 PM _unreal_: Olli (RIO) are you doing all the coding?
05:29 PM lcnc-relay: <andypugh@> Olli (RIO)@: I have been meaning to work on that idea, but you seem to have saved me the trouble. Will you be making the code public? I can think of many, many uses.
05:30 PM lcnc-relay: <andypugh@> One that I wanted to work on was a smart-serial version of the EXE box for sinusoudal encoders.
05:30 PM lcnc-relay: <andypugh@> * sinusoidal
05:37 PM lcnc-relay: <andypugh@> Tom_L: Should be fixed now? Thanks.
05:40 PM lcnc-relay: <xilef@> Hey, can someone recommend a cheap ATC spindle 🤔? Right now I have this one: https://www.vevor.de/spindelmotor-c_10130/vevor-2-2kw-er20-luftgekuehlt-cnc-fraesspindel-air-cooled-spindelmotor-220v-p_010648959518
05:41 PM lcnc-relay: <Olli (RIO)@> _unreal_: not the smart-serial part : https://github.com/fdarling/mesa-smartserial-device-template
05:42 PM lcnc-relay: <Olli (RIO)@> andypugh@: i used this: https://github.com/fdarling/mesa-smartserial-device-template
05:42 PM Tom_L: andypugh, yes thanks
05:48 PM _unreal_: Olli (RIO)I mean the ESP32
05:49 PM lcnc-relay: <Olli (RIO)@> thats the esp32 part, i only changed the Serial1 to Serial2 in the template, than it works on esp32
05:50 PM _unreal_: oh
05:51 PM _unreal_: this new motion control box I'm working on setting up. I'm trying SOOO hard to ensure as much as possible can through the window.
05:52 PM _unreal_: I dont need to but the more that is visable the more function led's can be seen and the more I can access parts
06:23 PM xxcoder: whew. got back from deaf event
06:24 PM xxcoder: havent went to one for years
06:25 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> how was it?
06:25 PM xxcoder: was ok. some food and met people I havent seen for nearly a decade
06:27 PM fluffywolf: mmm, food...
06:27 PM xxcoder: yeah. its for rebuilding deaf center
06:28 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> coolness
06:28 PM xxcoder: yeah. it have quite many uses, like events, legal help, help on programs goverment or elsewhere
06:29 PM xxcoder: I had volunteered building networking system there long time ago
06:29 PM xxcoder: funny how it will be taken down soon.
06:36 PM xxcoder: anyway its quite helpful place for eaf communty
06:36 PM xxcoder: deaf too
06:37 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> xxcoder: time to upgrade?
06:37 PM xxcoder: building is quite old, so yeah. theyre rebuilding it
06:39 PM Tom_L: what's a good nvme ssd brand?
06:39 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I like both samsung and micron
06:40 PM Tom_L: i have a dead 1tb samsung evo
06:40 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> samsung had a bad firmware that took some nvme's out a few years ago
06:40 PM xxcoder: isnt samsung 970, 980 and 990 all time bombs
06:40 PM xxcoder: well some of 970
06:40 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> micron is what I use on the servers
06:40 PM Tom_L: this was a 960 evo
06:41 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I have used a ton of samsungs - and have only had one go bad.
06:41 PM Tom_L: i think part of it may have been the MB
06:42 PM Tom_L: just want some small cheap ones to test with
06:44 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> lol - then I don't know.
06:44 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> intel?
06:44 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> (I have had a lot of intel ssd's go bad)
06:45 PM xxcoder: can always check backburn
06:45 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> like 6 or 7
06:45 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> six seevvvennn
06:45 PM xxcoder: err backblaze
06:45 PM xxcoder: 6*7=42 btw. the answer to everything
06:45 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> lol
06:46 PM xxcoder: anyway blackblaze uses LOT of drives
06:46 PM xxcoder: and they publish records on drives dying etc
06:46 PM xxcoder: so its good resource
06:48 PM Tom_L: booting rpi5 on trixie
06:48 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> Tom_L: case should be here monday
06:48 PM Tom_L: mine too
06:48 PM Tom_L: i got a 2nd one
06:48 PM Tom_L: got my mesa board today
06:48 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> Fun!
06:49 PM Tom_L: wish i had another nvme for it
06:49 PM Tom_L: mesa is just a backup
06:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I could run to work and get you one?
06:50 PM Tom_L: sure
06:50 PM Tom_L: :)
06:50 PM Tom_L: trixie boots up with a lcnc logo.. kinda cool
06:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> trixie on the pi?
06:51 PM Tom_L: yessir
06:51 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> cool - I should try that 🙂
06:51 PM Tom_L: you should
06:51 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> is the latency any better?
06:51 PM Tom_L: out of the box no
06:51 PM Tom_L: 12 so far on servo
06:52 PM Tom_L: 50ish on base
06:52 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> you know - when I tried the gpio - I had to set the base thread really high - like 100us
06:52 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> but thinking back - when I was running just hal - base thread was much lower than that - I am pretty sure..
06:52 PM Tom_L: running off a SD card
06:54 PM Tom_L: god only knows what the password is now
06:54 PM Tom_L: it's not cnc
06:54 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I just looked - just hal I was running a 50us
06:55 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> where did you get it?
06:56 PM Tom_L: http://linuxcnc.org/downloads/
06:56 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> it says
06:56 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> A setup wizard will run on startup to configure username, password, WiFi etc
06:56 PM Tom_L: just saw that
06:56 PM Tom_L: i'll have to reboot or something
06:58 PM Tom_L: i got no setup wizzard on first boot
06:58 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> oops
06:59 PM xxcoder: wizzard, the greatest hero coward wizard
06:59 PM Tom_L: then it must have timed out and wanted me to log in again
06:59 PM xxcoder: discworld lol
06:59 PM Tom_L: that's why we test
07:01 PM Tom_L: i'll let it time out again and see what happens
07:01 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> downlaoding
07:01 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> loading
07:01 PM Tom_L: i like the splash screen logo
07:01 PM Tom_L: but that don't make chips fly
07:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I managed to get some sort of respratory thing thursday.. Feel better today - but still pretty achy...
07:02 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> skunkworks@: which case are you guys using?
07:02 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/Rpi5/pics/nvme_case/
07:03 PM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DL2DFZQ7
07:03 PM Tom_L: no ssd with it just the carrier board
07:03 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> lol - tom is fast
07:03 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I had it coppied..
07:03 PM Tom_L: i had it in flex already
07:03 PM Tom_L: someone was asking
07:04 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> cool, that looks solid
07:04 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> how come flex isn't on here too? (discord)
07:04 PM Tom_L: it is
07:05 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> oh? in the linuxcnc channel? or not
07:05 PM Tom_L: yes
07:05 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> so, with that case, I wouldn't need this, right? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MNFH1PX/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_5
07:05 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I only have development, general, qtpyvcp, and off topic..
07:05 PM Tom_L: you didn't join the cool club yet
07:06 PM Tom_L: mine came up with it all right there
07:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> awww - why... WHY!!!
07:06 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> oh, I see flex, too
07:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> oof - Ok - just turned it on.. Duh
07:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> what other channels am I missing?
07:07 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> botspam.. Probably don't need that.
07:07 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> Cool
07:09 PM lcnc-relay: <Tom_Cell@> It came right up on my phone
07:09 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> well - isn't that nice for you.
07:09 PM Tom_L: hahaha
07:09 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I am not bitter..
07:09 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> 😉
07:09 PM Tom_L: uh huh
07:11 PM Tom_L: ok it timed out and now i need a password for user pi and don't have one
07:11 PM Tom_L: no wizzard pops out of a box
07:12 PM Tom_L: andypugh,
07:12 PM roycroft: isn't the password for pi "miss american"?
07:12 PM Tom_L: setup wizzard doesn't start up on boot on the rpi trixie image
07:13 PM Tom_L: and the password isn't cnc now
07:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> It used to be raspian iirc
07:14 PM Tom_L: keep guessin
07:14 PM xxcoder: it isnt password?
07:14 PM Tom_L: keep guessin
07:15 PM * roycroft is back from town with a shiny new poe switch and, to use an old-fashioned word that nobody's ever heard of, some "groceries"
07:16 PM roycroft: i aim to get this camera working and some food in my belly tonight
07:16 PM roycroft: those are the goals
07:16 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> trying to put together a sane shopping cart for the rpi5 and case and nvme. I have:
07:16 PM lcnc-relay: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0D2WYFS23
07:16 PM lcnc-relay: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0F389CXSX
07:16 PM lcnc-relay: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MNFH1PX
07:16 PM lcnc-relay: it seems like with the just linked box, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0DL2DFZQ7, I wouldn't need the adaptor or the nvme case?
07:17 PM roycroft: i do not know about the rpi5, but the rpi4 is very sensitive to input voltage and current
07:17 PM roycroft: i should assume the rpi5 is the same
07:17 PM Tom_L: lesliet if you want that metal case it's nice
07:18 PM xxcoder: yeah rpi charger dont work for rpi if I recall right
07:18 PM Tom_L: i got all the things you linked and the case
07:18 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> ok
07:18 PM xxcoder: which was kind of stunner a bit ago for hmm roy I think?
07:18 PM roycroft: i'm using a mean well 5vdc power supply for the rpi in the mini-router controller
07:18 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> so maybe add a power conditioner?
07:18 PM Tom_L: i wound up not using the nvme board but did use the ssd from it on the board that comes with the case
07:18 PM roycroft: yes, i spent a lot of time figuring that out
07:18 PM roycroft: purchase the official, approved power adapter for the rpi, and then it doesn't work
07:19 PM roycroft: feed it something different, with more power, and it's happy all day long
07:19 PM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0D2WYFS23 is a good kit
07:19 PM Tom_L: i used that case until i got nvme
07:19 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> think I already have a meanwell 5vdc power supply. Maybe a din rail mount
07:19 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> _rummages_
07:20 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> ok, not din mount, but 5v 18 amp
07:21 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> ok, duly noted, don't use official power supply
07:21 PM xxcoder: good thing I remembered that
07:23 PM * Tom_L looks at the trixie splash screen a bit longer and puts it aside pending a password
07:23 PM xxcoder: well its in your physical access which its owned already. probably can reset password by taking nvme or sd to other computer
07:24 PM roycroft: you just need a usbc connector to feed the rpi
07:24 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> xxcoder: yes, thank you! Saving me hours of frustration
07:24 PM Tom_L: it's also about testing the process
07:24 PM xxcoder: welcome
07:25 PM xxcoder: roy reminded me of that fun event too
07:25 PM roycroft: i think my cats are gonna get busted soon
07:26 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> roycroft: https://www.amazon.com/Connector-Solderless-Pluggable-Extension-Interface/dp/B08D93ZSM4 ?
07:26 PM roycroft: i'm thinking about adding a couple cameras inside the house after i get all the outdoor ones installed
07:26 PM _unreal_: I am dredding making the mill conversion for this endmill :/
07:26 PM _unreal_: I'd rather find a conversion kit for the X/Y
07:26 PM roycroft: and if i do, i'll be able to capture them frolicking while i'm not home
07:26 PM _unreal_: then have to fab everything
07:27 PM _unreal_: oh god, I just had a terrible mental image of roycroft capturing him self frolicking
07:27 PM roycroft: i'll be using an ai engine to filter the camera feeds
07:28 PM roycroft: i'll tell it not to capture video when i'm home
07:28 PM roycroft: so no worries
07:28 PM roycroft: that would work if you need terminals, lesliet
07:28 PM roycroft: i just used a cable with usbc on one end and bare wires on the other end
07:29 PM roycroft: and attached it directly to the power supply
07:29 PM roycroft: you only need two wires
07:30 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> this is just my way to help make it as dummy-proof as possible
07:30 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> would rather not accidentally fry anything
07:31 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> and the clear pinout helps
07:33 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> oh! I wanted to show off my cool thing- got that LokLik cutter working to cut gaskets.
07:33 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> https://jauriarts.org/_heisenbridge/media/jauriarts.org/PhbhvPeJxNzKczRUXWtNBzlb/RTkpE1DaZTU/9n_pinion_gasket.JPG
07:33 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> 1.4mm gasket material
07:36 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, i think if you set the user & password when you burn the image it may work.. testing that
07:40 PM Tom_L: lesliet, nice
07:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> ok - still downloading
07:42 PM Tom_L: just a heads up.. might save some time
07:43 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I will try it normally first - so we can send some feedback
07:43 PM Tom_L: i'll know here in a few min
07:43 PM Tom_L: when you burn wiht the rpi downloader it will ask if you wanna set some parameters
07:43 PM Tom_L: i would...
07:44 PM Tom_L: user, wifi etc
07:44 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> right - but if the directions say that it should run a wizard.. I think it should
07:44 PM Tom_L: yeah i agree
07:45 PM Tom_L: at least rpi is listed on the download page now :)
07:46 PM Tom_L: next you should do a trixie install and test the rpi deb
07:49 PM Tom_L: this time it logged in as 'tom' and connected to the wifi right away
07:49 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> do you install trixie first, and then Lcnc?
07:49 PM Tom_L: no
07:49 PM Tom_L: you can
07:49 PM Tom_L: not on this test though
07:49 PM Tom_L: there is an img file on the downloads page
07:49 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> ok, cool
07:51 PM Tom_L: still stuck with xfce desktop
07:51 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/cXu5uZJju661imm99
07:52 PM Tom_L: i finally threw mine away
07:52 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> NOOooooo
07:52 PM Tom_L: 5.25 floppies..
07:52 PM Tom_L: about 30 of em
07:52 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> well - these are hard disks..
07:53 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> lol - (I remember people calling them hard disks - because they were.. well.. hard)
07:53 PM xxcoder: 😏
07:53 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> lol, I had harvard graphics on a set of 5.25's
07:54 PM Tom_L: so if you don't follow directions and enter a user during the image burn it works
07:55 PM Tom_L: then would also be a good time to set up the wifi
07:55 PM Tom_L: they've changed how that is done now too
07:55 PM Tom_L: network manager and it doesn't use the interfaces files anymore
07:56 PM Tom_L: in fact if the interfaces file is there it won't connect
07:59 PM Tom_L: looks like that's the same for trixie
08:03 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, they may be referring to the PI imager wizzard
08:03 PM Tom_L: the wording may be a bit confusing
08:03 PM Tom_L: i think that may be the case
08:05 PM Tom_L: andypugh ^^
08:05 PM _unreal_: did any of you guys ever see the flimsy cd's?
08:06 PM _unreal_: I wish I knew what I ever did with them but I remember removing two cd's from abook but they where set in a perforated setup in this hard rubber page
08:06 PM _unreal_: and they where not as stiff as normal cd's
08:06 PM _unreal_: worked ok. we are talking the mid 90's
08:06 PM xxcoder: great yorkshire today
08:10 PM _unreal_: damn I'm working on drawing the part to cut for the bottom of this control box. I just got a bunch of temu stuff including a circle drawing iris thing. But I brought it to work knowing I'm going to need it. well I'm home and need it :/
08:11 PM _unreal_: basiclly the goal is to set it to the radius i'm looking at so I can figure out what the size is with far less effort. sigh
08:41 PM _unreal_: I dont know why but I just reallllllly hate removing the wet jig basin I made for my cnc machine
08:42 PM _unreal_: I dont hate IT but just the install and remove process is such a f....ing pain
08:42 PM _unreal_: mainly the fact that it takes an hour to install or remove
09:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> Tom_L: mine just booted to the desktop
09:05 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> looks cool
09:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> hmm - the user is 'rpi-first-boot-wizard'
09:10 PM Tom_L: yeah with no password?
09:11 PM Tom_L: that or user: pi
09:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> well - I don't know - sudo works without a password - but that was the same as the previous install
09:11 PM Tom_L: log out and try to log back in
09:11 PM Tom_L: ;)
09:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> i rebooted with no issue
09:12 PM Tom_L: i didn't get that far
09:12 PM Tom_L: but when i entered the info from the pi downloader i was able to enter user 'tom' and create a password etc
09:13 PM Tom_L: then you don't end up with all those oddball user names
09:13 PM Tom_L: 'cnc' etc as prevously
09:14 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> yep - not setup corrextly
09:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I cannot login after loggin out - if I reboot - it goes right to desktop again
09:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> wonder what is supposed to run on boot
09:16 PM Tom_L: i think the wizzard mentioned was in the rpi imager
09:16 PM Tom_L: just not worded well
09:16 PM roycroft: is this debian, skunkworks?
09:16 PM Tom_L: debian 13
09:17 PM Tom_L: trixie
09:17 PM roycroft: and you're trying to disable the gui startup?
09:17 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> there is a raspbery pi first run wizard in the startup..
09:17 PM roycroft: oh
09:17 PM Tom_L: we are figuring out how the img file is set up
09:18 PM lfluffywof is now known as fluffywolf
09:18 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> might be piwiz?
09:19 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> but it doesn't seem to exist on this install
09:20 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> lol - apt-get install piwiz works
09:20 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> let me see if rebooting launches it
09:21 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> yep
09:21 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> so someone forgot to install piwiz on the image
09:21 PM Tom_L: woops
09:22 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> it launches on the reboot
09:22 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/KgC2GnjJRxbijrcD7
09:22 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> (I had already setup the wifi)
09:23 PM Tom_L: yeah
09:23 PM Tom_L: i'm not sure who's in charge of those but i bet andy knows
09:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> yep - sets up user and everything
09:24 PM Tom_L: nice
09:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> lets see what happens when I reboot
09:24 PM Tom_L: i got past it the other way
09:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I lost the linuxcnc splash screen...
09:24 PM Tom_L: aww.. it was kinda cool
09:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> (I don't know if that was a apt-get update or what)
09:26 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> well - that still auto logins to the rpi-first-boot-wizard user
09:26 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> this was not well thought out
09:29 PM Tom_L: i noticed with the nvme, the boot order hex values you can enter in the config don't work as advertised
09:29 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> lol - because on boot - piwiz isn't run as sudo..
09:29 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> christ
09:30 PM Tom_L: you set it to boot first from nvme and it still searches for a sd
09:30 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> whoami
09:30 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> oops - wrong keybaord
09:30 PM Tom_L: who are you?
09:31 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> yep - you run piwiz as sudo - it seems to work as expected.
09:31 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> so - piwiz isn't installed and it doesn't run as sudo on bootup.
09:39 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> it also blanks the screen after a bit
09:40 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> is there a thread on this?
09:42 PM Tom_L: i've no idea
09:44 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I will post on the mailing list.
09:44 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:06 PM roycroft: well, the camera was trivial to get on the network and assign a static ip
10:06 PM roycroft: and the picture quality is great, both in color with a lot of light and ir in the dark
10:07 PM roycroft: now i have to build a nvr
10:08 PM xxcoder: nice
10:08 PM Tom_L: got flex working on trixie
10:08 PM Tom_L: had some missing pyqt dependencies
10:08 PM roycroft: cool
10:09 PM Tom_L: --fix broken...
10:09 PM Tom_L: and it did
10:09 PM Tom_L: :)
10:09 PM roycroft: i'm looking at getting back to the mini-router project in december
10:09 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> Ok - I put it on the mailing list.
10:09 PM Tom_L: thanks
10:09 PM roycroft: i won't need flex for it until i'm making chips, but i'd like to start working with it shortly thereafter
10:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I did it again - and after first boot - enabling wifi - installing piwiz - then rebooting - it seemed to work as expected. (and then re-login as my user) but it also did updates and I lost the linuxcnc boot screen.
10:10 PM xxcoder: nice tom. so the image was broken or what?
10:10 PM Tom_L: missing dependencies
10:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> (I might have goofed it up the first time because it was running twice iirc)
10:11 PM xxcoder: roy nice. cant wait to see it making chips lol
10:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> (piwiz)
10:11 PM Tom_L: if i can get things set up on the sd i may burn a nvme drive for it
10:12 PM Tom_L: and give it a go on the mill
10:13 PM xxcoder: tomorrow I might finally work on my tricycle. I want to start riding soon
10:13 PM roycroft: just in time for the snow :)
10:13 PM xxcoder: yep. but I desperate need exercise
10:13 PM roycroft: you'll get a good feel for that washboard ice that the roads in pdx turn into when it snows
10:15 PM xxcoder: fun lol
10:16 PM roycroft: i am somewhat annoyed
10:16 PM roycroft: frigate (the nvr software) runs in a docker instance, and i hate docker
10:17 PM roycroft: but it's not worth the effort to get it running outside of docker
10:17 PM xxcoder: docker is solution to software engineer "well it works on my system"
10:17 PM roycroft: docker is ok as a development environment, i guess
10:18 PM Tom_L: ok got a couple more nvme to test with
10:18 PM roycroft: but i really really dislike running production services in docker instances
10:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> Hmm what do we use at work... Shinobi
10:44 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> It seems ok. We are running it on proxmox vm
10:46 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> Getting the right incantation for each camera is a pain. But once setup it just works
11:16 PM roycroft: well i just learned how the nvr and home assistant talk to each other, and i need to install a mqtt broker for that
11:17 PM roycroft: but i think home assistant can run the broker - i don't think i need a separate machine for that
11:17 PM roycroft: but i need to do that before i build the nvr, so it knows what to talk to
11:50 PM _unreal_: ubuntu 25.10 is really starting to annoy me
11:50 PM _unreal_: likely going to UPgrade to 24 lts
11:51 PM _unreal_: to much trouble running into things not being supported anymore or refusing to build when trying to comple
