10:07 AM roycroft: happy friday
11:51 AM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> good Frey day
12:54 PM roycroft: bessey just came out with some woodworker equivalents of toe jacks, and i thought that might be interesting and useful
12:55 PM roycroft: so i went to find them and order a couple, but they're $125 each
12:55 PM roycroft: maybe not so interesting
12:57 PM Tom_L: what would woodworkers use those for?
01:00 PM xxcoder: rising rollers to level with output of somen tools I guess
01:00 PM xxcoder: like planar
01:00 PM Tom_L: the little hand grip jack?
01:00 PM xxcoder: honestly dunno. hey roy got link to me
01:01 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> the pics I see look like a jack to get under stuff close to the same surface the jack is on
01:01 PM roycroft: holding cabinet doors in place while installing them
01:01 PM roycroft: lifting cabinets to level them
01:01 PM roycroft: lots of uses for those for woodworkers
01:01 PM Tom_L: yeah
01:01 PM xxcoder: ahh ok
01:02 PM roycroft: https://bessey.de/en-gb/bessey-tool/products/clamping-tools/one-handed-lifting-tool
01:02 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> beats holding stuff up with a rolly bar
01:03 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> roycroft: oh, I see, sort of a reverse clamp
01:03 PM xxcoder: interesting. looks like clamp tool but with different end and blade on handle
01:03 PM roycroft: right
01:03 PM roycroft: it's a toe jack for woodworkers :)
01:03 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> makes me think one might be able to modify bar clamps...
01:03 PM xxcoder: wonder if you could simply buy cheap one and convert it
01:03 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> lol, same wavelength
01:04 PM xxcoder: different words, same wavelength lol
01:04 PM roycroft: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00L1BC56O?th=1
01:04 PM roycroft: that's the more familiar type
01:05 PM roycroft: for lifting your bridgeport to slide rollers under it
01:05 PM Tom_L: you gotta lift it to get the jack under it
01:05 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> are you TRYING to drain my bank account? (lol)
01:05 PM Tom_L: we used a crow bar when we moved my bud's
01:06 PM roycroft: many large pieces of machinery have forklift notches
01:06 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> mine's already sitting on dunnage
01:06 PM Tom_L: right
01:06 PM roycroft: a toe jack slips right in that
01:06 PM roycroft: but yes, if you don't have the notches, one person uses a pry bar to lift it high enough to get the toe jack in
01:06 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> probably going to use a bar, and support the top with an engine hoist, when I get to moving mine on rollers
01:07 PM roycroft: btw, i am in contact now with an english-speaking person at the japanese tool store
01:07 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> oh, good
01:07 PM roycroft: they are trying to figure out the paperwork that us customs are demanding
01:07 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> that would suck to pay duty, and not get the item
01:07 PM Tom_L: hope you get what you ordered
01:07 PM roycroft: yes
01:07 PM roycroft: it's odd, because this store ships to the usa regularly - it was recommended to me by folks who order from them
01:08 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> probably just chaotically changing rules
01:08 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> or an overzealous petty agent
01:08 PM roycroft: but we're in an era where rules and regulations change randomly and the changes are not published
01:08 PM roycroft: i don't know what the cause of the delay is
01:09 PM roycroft: i just know that it's being held by customs, and the shipper needs to deal with it
01:09 PM roycroft: anyway, there are ways around those toe jacks, and certainly ways to modify other equipment to work like a toe jack, but the bessey jacks would be very convenient and no hassle to grab and use
01:09 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> gf got a notice that something was at the post office with $27 postage due. Turned out to be that because she used an express mailer turned inside out, an overzealous postal worker flagged it, she ended up not having to pay. (and does a better job of covering up the mailer, now)
01:10 PM roycroft: if only there were about half as expensive as they are
01:10 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> yeah, 125 is a lot for what that is
01:10 PM roycroft: half that is about right
01:10 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> clever idea, but not the only way to get that job done
01:10 PM roycroft: but i have no idea what the tariff is on that
01:11 PM roycroft: it could be half that price + the tariff
01:12 PM roycroft: festool recently did their annual price hike, plus they added the tariff on top of that
01:12 PM roycroft: all my festool kit just appreciated in value quite a bit :)
01:13 PM xxcoder: gonna love when tools value deprecation is lower than inflation of price.
01:13 PM roycroft: the small domino machine, for example, went from ~$1250 to ~$1550
01:13 PM roycroft: i got mine from the festool recon site for ~$900
01:13 PM roycroft: i could have flipped it for $1100 as soon as i bought it, but now i could probably bet $1300 for it
01:14 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> I had to move my 2000kg mill into the garage single handed before it started to rain, i drilled some bolts into the garage floor and bolted a 12v winch to it, dragged the thing kicking and screaming
01:15 PM roycroft: festool is a better investment than retirement grease!
01:15 PM Tom_L: even small pipe underneath makes things roll easy
01:16 PM roycroft: yeah, a few short pieces of 1/2" black pipe would be perfect for that
01:16 PM roycroft: you'd only need 4 or 5 pieces
01:16 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> My main issue was the that the mill didn't really fit throught the door vertically, i was bending the door.up with my hand while using an ir remote to control the winch
01:17 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Worked though
01:17 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> I shpild start recording these things
01:18 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> with your 5th hand?
01:18 PM roycroft: i was going to install a roll-up garage door in my shop
01:18 PM roycroft: but they are pretty expensive, and even the insulated ones are significant sources of heat exchange
01:18 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> See this is why I need industrial robots
01:19 PM roycroft: i decided instead to build a double door for it, so i have a decent width opening
01:19 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> my shop door is horrible. Just 2x4 framing on hinges, they swing inward.
01:19 PM roycroft: and because of the issue with moving tallish equipment in and out, i'll build the doors higher than usual, so there's plenty of overhead clearance
01:19 PM xxcoder: if it was me, I would have decent wide door, and wall that can also be opened for large opening if needed, but are closed and isulated at other times
01:20 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> I am 2/4 of the way though making side hung garage doors to gain clearance
01:20 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> but same issue, the rollup doors are very expensive, and beyond what I'm willing to install myself
01:20 PM roycroft: a single door wider than 36" looks funny (unless it's really tall) and is hard to hang securely
01:21 PM roycroft: but 2 30" doors would look really good, and give me a nice wide opening for when i need it
01:21 PM roycroft: so that's what i'm planning on doing
01:21 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> They are basically a custom sip panel enclosed on the sides with three layes of 18mm plywood
01:22 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> on the plus side, I can drive a full sized tractor into the shop with plenty of clearance, and it wasn't a big deal to get the mill in there with a loader
01:22 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> what does "side hung" mean?
01:23 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> As in two oversized normal entry doors
01:23 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> ah, ok
01:23 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Meet in the middle
01:23 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> like French doors
01:23 PM roycroft: yes
01:23 PM roycroft: https://roycroft.us/Shop/ShopEntryDoor-Cherry.jpeg
01:23 PM roycroft: that's a work in progress design
01:23 PM roycroft: i've refined it a bit since i posted that
01:23 PM roycroft: but a pair of those would look good
01:24 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Sort of, though in the uk we tend to call sliding glass doors french doors
01:24 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> _nodnod_
01:24 PM roycroft: we call those "patio doors"
01:24 PM roycroft: in the us, "french doors" are hinged
01:24 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> or "sliders", although that can also mean small burgers
01:24 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Anywau, point is, gain a lot of height compared the old up and over doors
01:25 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> plus they probably don't interfere with lighting?
01:25 PM roycroft: my shop walls are the standard 8' high
01:25 PM roycroft: a standard door is 7' high
01:25 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> That too
01:25 PM roycroft: i could go to 7'6" without doing anything unusual
01:25 PM roycroft: but the new roof is going to be timber frame, with its own 6x8 plate on top of the existing walls
01:25 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> And there's 50mm of foil sanwiched insulation in them
01:26 PM roycroft: so once that is in place i could cut out the top plate of the existing walls, since the roof plate would support things
01:26 PM roycroft: and could go to about 7'11" tall for the door
01:27 PM roycroft: no need for any taller than that, because equipment that won't fit through that door would not fit in the shop
01:29 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Im just trying to work with what I've got, previous owner made the garage by closing the gap between the hpuse and a 2.4m retaining wall
01:29 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Then put a single pitch roof on it
01:30 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> It's half arsed as hell
01:31 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> House was built in 1895, then some weird half stone half concrete block extension and bay windows
01:31 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> In the 70s
01:32 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Wall between kitchen and living room is 70mm solid stone
01:32 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> 700mm
01:34 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> If it was charming I might hesitate with my long term plans to build a new house at the other side of the property eventually
01:34 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> But it's not, it was shit by 1895 standards
01:40 PM roycroft: it's important to preserve historic houses
01:41 PM roycroft: but just as important to tear down historic abominations
01:44 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Yup, replacement will be indulated sonwell you xqn make a thermo powerplant on top of the 200kw solar roof
01:45 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> What an interesting array of typos
01:49 PM lcnc-relay: <gregcnc@> https://vikingarm.com/ patented those hand jacks. Stanley Black & Decker started selling copies under Dewalt a few years back. They settled not too long ago.
01:50 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> I'm sure the alibaba sellers who can make you three million in 14 days will respect the patent
01:52 PM lcnc-relay: <gregcnc@> Who do you think was making the stuff for SBD?
01:54 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Costs a lot to put the logo of a second rate company on the merchandise, overheads
01:56 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> I will say though, whoever makes those stanley sorting boxes are doing a sterling job
01:57 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> The polycarbonate is some of the clearest I've seen
03:57 PM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
